The most recent rom I'm trying has a built-in wakelock blocker and I'm trying to figure out how to use it.
Barring a few apps, I'm would have liked to avoid Google services entirely, but unfortunately I have to use them.
In all honesty, the only thing I'm really interested waking up my phone is:
messages (sms, WhatsApp, Signal, other apps yet to be installed)
Phone calls
Alarms.
That's pretty much it, I don't want (or at least I don't think I want) anything else waking up my phone to maximize my battery life.
What do you guys recommend?

Been trying to squeeze out some battery life on my S4 running goldfinger kitkat ROM. No matter what I do, I seem to get a bunch of wakelocks, radio/wifi turning on, etc. What I would like is to be able to totally disable everything when the screen is off (with the exception of incoming calls/texts) and then sync when I wake the device up. I'd also like to have a whitelist for apps like slacker/pandora/music. I've tried wakelock detector, greenify, and DS battery saver (these are the ones I've found most useful). Of the three, DS battery saver seems to be the best at shutting everything down, but doesn't have a whitelist feature, and requires a reboot to toggle. Greenify and wakelock detector require you to know which apps are waking your device. This is OK for the big culprits on my device (FB, google play, exchange services), but I still get random wifi/gps/other wakeups. This is likely just the result of having a bunch of apps that want to phone home, even if each of them does it rarely. Again, it would be nice if they could all do it at once. Any solutions?
you can use greenify, it can turn off apps when your phone is off.
Please let me know if you find such app. For now I'm using Greenify, Wakelock Detector and for some time a new Xposed module: Unbounce.
A little more experimenting. Seems that DS battery saver is the best for what I want, which is a sleeping phone except when I'm using it. All the other apps require that I put a certain app to sleep, rather than have everything asleep by default. My phone then gets random wakes, even though there isn't any one single misbehaving app that I can find. DS saver can be turned off temporarily through the notification bar for when I'm using music services in the background without rebooting. Using DS battery saver on "aggressive", I average about 0.6% drop/hour, with 3 minutes awake time/hour. I think that's OK, but not sure if I can do better (like no awake time/hour). I'm wondering if the awake time is just due to cellular traffic. Hmm, maybe I'll see what it looks like in airplane mode.
Greets lads,
For "TL/DR"s: Not gaining any battery improvements with root/xposed capable tools (Greenify/Amplify); losing important features like on-time notifications; need help on Greenify settings or alternatives for them.
I am facing an issue, in fact, i always did, when trying to follow battery tips people go for when they root their phones.
I've just recently rooted my Note 8 (Exynos), nevertheless, i always go for a self-controlled system on my phone rather than very modified Custom ROMs, either i modify my stock rom, or find a minimally touched one in the custom rom threads.
Usually, if i achieved massive battery improvements, i ended up with a lot of sacrifices. In previous phones (Note 3, Galaxy A3 2014, HTC M8), i managed to get twice the screen time and battery life when i set-up the usual procedures to , which are: De-bloat (what i dont need and is safe to get rid off), Xposed because of Greenify and Amplify (PowerNap too).
The issues that i would get at these times were delayed notifications i.e from messaging apps, delayed waking up from sleeps (my sleeping, not phone ones) cause the alarm would never make it on time. Now all these apps were white-listed from all the apps that are supposed to limit them.
Now with Samsung Oreo, things look way to weird. My alarm app (Timely) works flawlessly and wakes me up as supposed to, it's untouched by the Samsung Device Maintenance, it is not on the Greenify list, and on Amplify it's not even taken in to consideration as i use the only two features that it allows you in the non-donated version, to limit the wake-ups of Play Services.
However, many messaging apps (obviously white-listed), turned very strange. Many times im in front of my computer, talking on the same platforms already existent on my phone, and 20 minutes later, i open my phone, and i am bombarded by all the incoming communication that i already witnessed on the desktop. This doesnt make any sense.
First, i have already acknowledged them, i was texted on them, i replied, on the desktop. The fact that they show up on my phone means they probably make it in time on my phone, but my phone decides not to wake up. Sometimes it does this without opening the phone up, maybe after 20 to 30 minutes after.
My set-up is: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Exynos, SM-N950F), TWRP, rooted with Magisk v16.6, Xposed (Modules: Amplify, Greenify, MinMinGuard), Greenify is Donated version, Amplify is not (would love to, but impossible in my region due to racist google), and root permissive apps such as AdGuard (which is terrible), FX File Explorer (for obvious reasons), Trimmer fstab (not sure if i actually need it), Termux for root shell.
My questions is, WTH am i doing wrong.
BetterBatteryStats shows the usual output on root too, nothing major draining it, but no whatsoever gains of battery life compared to the unrooted past, i mean, 2h screen time with 24h battery life, pathetic, that was the default on my previous 4/5 year old phones, and when i set-up the usual rooted procedures, i would get 4/5h screen time in 48h of battery life.
Any tips on Greenify settings? Any tips for alternative/substitution apps for the ones i already use? (WakeBlock i.e never worked or made my phones unbootable)
Thanks in advance.
Totally feel you and I'm searching for an answer to this, too. I had Greenify installed via the discontinued Magisk module and Xposed, and it started getting REALLY wonky, freezing up and ****. After reading that a lot of people here don't think it's even necessary beginning with Oreo, I uninstalled it and now the lag on my OP3 is pretty horrible, even after freezing the bulk of my apps with TB.
I too would appreciate any advice that can be given... have a OP3 on OxygenOS Oreo 8.0, rooted with Magisk, have Xposed, have debloated everything I have found safe, and using Nova Launcher.
Hello. I'm sure this has been asked bunch of times, but whenever I google it, I get opposite results.
So.. I want my phone not to save battery. Like.. I want my notifications to come through instantly. Now only few apps are capable of doing that (calls, messages, alarm clock). But all other apps - like gmail, skype or FB Messenger are not. I only receive notifications when I wake up my device (or when someone starts spamming me messages, after like 5th message they come through, so I guess phone is receiving those messages, just not putting them through). Whenever I google solutions for this, I only get tips on how to make it worse (because for some reason everyone just want to save their batteries) or nothing that actually worked.
What I have done so far:
Battery optimization - off for every single application (even system).
Background activity manager - looks off (there is no toggle, only the 'blacklist', which is off).
Background activity cleaner - off.
Every app has 'Urgent' notification importance.
Phone is not rooted (nor it can be.. stupid Nokia policy). Android 8.1. Nokia 5.
Battery power saver - off (obviously).
Looks like I have data saving modes turned off (I might have missed some, but I only do not get notifications while device is sleeping).
Factory reset (multiple times (for various reasons)). I never received real-time notifications on this phone while it's sleeping.
I contacted Nokia support team, but they took 30 minutes to tell me to reboot the phone, so decided not to wait another half an hour to tell me to clear apps' cache.
I saw that with ADB I could turn off doze, but as I understood, it's temporary as restarting the phone brings this 'feature' back, but I have to restart this phone every day or two due to not a huge amount of RAM (2GB) as it fills up with trash and restarting the phone brings me the best performance, so it's really not a great option. Edit: also, it didn't help
I guess it's a manufacturer specific problem then? ;s
Guys, i'm fed up with notifications working sloppy on my 6. Sometimes the phone doesn't ring when a notifications pops up, even tough it's in RING mode, sometimes it doesn't show notifications at all. Adaptive battery and deep optimization are off. And the important apps have "Don't Optimize" as well.
What can i do to have notifications work all the time? I'm getting enough of my phone's refusal tantrum.
xXx magisk rom helps some with this.
Custom roms helps some.
I'm not 100% sure.. But I also think Smurf kernel made some edits that might counter it aswell (more than just zram to try to keep apps in BG)
Im on liquid remix + smurf atm and I don't have any issues with notifications.
But I didn't have such bad experience with oos either. Some Twitter + Instagram notifications, but that's all basically
I hesitate using custom ROMs cause i really like the default one. But if this continues, i'm forced to change. This is unacceptable.
Hello; it seems like background services are agressibely killed dispite disabling battery optimisation. This is an issue because I can not run any background service reliabely. They are all killed within 24h. This prevents many services working correctly, like backups, call recording, hardware monitoring. In some cases, this even produces data loss (logs and history or recordings are lost in some cases).
How to declare that an app should never be killed, or, restarted after garbage collection ?
Android 10
+1 1)this phone will not record my calls. 2)you cant turn off notifications from a hand full of apps. 3)you cant disable many apps.
i now hate this phone, basically i have paid money for a phone that other people control.
