Xiaomi Gestures and gesture typing - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Questions & Answers

I have gestures enabled on my mix 2s and I love them. So much more screen real estate to play with. However I find they interfere with gesture typing (eg: Swype or Gboard). In particular the 'p' is very difficult to swipe when a word starts with it. Anyone got a workaround for this? The MIUI back gesture (swipe) from edge really should only apply to the top 2/3 of the screen.

I also experience the same thing. I've just decided not to swipe close to the edge when typing

Does your keyboard closes while typing? Could be because of this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-mix-2s/help/miui-im-swiping-t3803874

When I bought this phone immediately noticed this issue, specially annoying when I try to use swipe writing. I suspected that occurs because the system doesn't know if your are trying to write using the keys located at the edges of the screen like q, p, etc. or just using gestures. As a workaround I tried to adapt the keyboard using the one handed mode feature (Google keyboard) then moving it to the center of the screen and it worked, the lag disappears and no more false back gestures that closed my keyboard. You can see the screenshot attached.
Let me know if it worked for you.

Long press the comma button and slide to the one handed mode toggle.

Excellent work around thanks!

This is by far the most annoying thing I've come across with this phone! Strange. I tried the draw app test rapidly tapping between the sides and got so many false swipes it was crazy. Hopefully the sensetivity can be adjusted in a future update. Xiaomi seems to be pretty good with updates so far.

Edges are being cut/shorten on Instagram

Hello guys,
I am fairly new with Huawei phones and phones with a notch.
Especially when using Instagram (browisng stories), the sides of the app are being cut, like the image is just smaller than on a normal/different phone. So if there is a text just on the edge, it would be cut and you would not be able to read it.
I was wondering if there is anyway to fix it.
I heared there is something like "fullscreen mode" for apps, but when I go to Settings and click it, Instagram is not on the list. Could I disable it (cause maybe it is enabled), just for this specific app?
No root etc.
Kind regards!

Im experiencing the exact same issue. What you can do is hiding the noth in system settings. Then you`ll get Insta (including stories) in fullscreen. BUT: Then the buttons for Text, Pen, image dont react to your touches. Its a complete mess. Can you confirm the problems with touch in hide notch mode?
I will check my IG app in a sec, but I think fullscreen mode is only available for apps that don't support the display.
I think apps like IG that natively 'support' these displays just don't display in the fullscreen mode settings.

The problem still occurs with hide notch mode ON, it is a bit better, but still edges on the sides are being cropped.
@Ephixi4 yeah I reinstalled the app, but fullscreen is not an option for IG. So it seems like it is either problem with a ROM or IG problem with not displaying their content properly for different res/notches.

I use the finger print scanner instead of navigation bar, that seems to work just fine.
I really wonder if it's OS issue for cropping app like that or IG.
Hoping for workaround soon.
@Larlen so I have notch visible but I have my soft keys hidden and I use the fingerprint scanner as navigation button.
Had no issues with IG app, maybe because of that?
But it seems more that the app is not very well designed to fit these screens and notch. When you want to edit a picture the brightness toggle is cropped because of the notch.
Sent from my EML-L29 using XDA Labs
It doesn't seem to be an issue with the notch, rather an issue with the screen ratio, with the notch not hidden it's 18.7/9, and with it hidden its 18/9, and it looks like alot of the apps are not optimized for 2/1 screen ratios yet

Well, I wasnt talking about the system navigation. I use the fingerprint sensor, too. I was talking about the Instagram Buttons in Story Mode, when hiding the notch. The Buttons for editing a story pic, before you actually post it.
These Buttons (for inserting a text, or a gif etc) dont really work...
Can yoo confirm? or dont you guys just dont use instagram storys?

I can confirm this. The story buttons are not responsive. I can get them to work sometimes after tapping on them continuously but it's super annoying. However, I found out that swiping up opens the sticker menu so that's a workaround at least.

Well, yes, but when I swipe up and see the emojis, they dont react neither...
Have the same issue. The buttons are not responsive because they are in the notch area. I've found they do work when you tap below the buttons as if they were below the notch area. The phone thinks the are still in the same spot as usually but it shows them in the top corner.
My insta stories also cuts of edges from pictures I made vertically. It's because of the screen ratio. I can't get them right even if I cut it the right ratio with an other app.
Why instagram still did not updated the app. The problem annoys too much. Anyone knows a workaround?
I use the fingerprint sensor to navigate and not the classic Android bottom bar.
I just tried right now on a story: if I use instead the classic bottom bar, I can see the whole story. If I hide the bottom bar, then the story takes the full screen and it crops the edges, right and left...
As someone said, it has to do with developers and not the phone I guess.
I hope IG will fix it soon
hey guys i am using the nova3i and have the same problem. What sux more that my friend told me that even my stories are being cropped once seen by them on their devices .

Loving the gestures

So almost immediately I switched my buttons to the gestures and I absolutely love them. The back button gestures being on both sides is awesome because I swap hands frequently when surfing the web or really when in any app. The home and recents also feel very natural. Maybe I love it so much because I also have an iPhone X with similar gestures. By the way did you guys notice tapping the notch while in Instagram takes you back to the top just like on iOS? Is that new? I had never noticed it before.
Who else lives the gesture based input?
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6003 using Tapatalk
I am also using the gestures, I love gestures navigation a lot than the button(soft or hard) inputs. But I would say, the gesture could be more snappy and smooth! Anyway, loving it.
Loving them too. Although i feel like the multitasking animation could be a little bit faster than that. It's a tiny bit too slow for me.

Same, love them, but recent apps -gesture takes a little too long to pop in

Swipe up less.
I have an iPhone x as well and must say that I also love the gesture navigation on the OnePlus 6. It's strange because the big Youtube reviewers were all hating on the OP6 gestures for some reason. Some even said that they are "nowhere near as good" as the iPhone X gestures. But I don't find that to be true. In side by side comparisons, the "Home", "Back" and "Recents" gestures are much snappier on my OP6 than my iPhone X. And they've worked flawlessly for me so far.
I don't plan on going back to normal nav buttons of any kind. I'm hoping that when Android P is officially released (not beta) for the OP6, OnePlus implements the same gesture navigation options that we have now, rather than adopting Google's way of doing it with Android P on the Pixel.
I love the new gestures.... I don't feel the need to put back the navigation buttons.
My only complaint is that the Split screen feature takes a little bit longer to activate : instead of using a long press on the recent button, I have to go in recent apps, select an app and slide it to the top.
The navigation gestures are fantastic! The additional screen real estate is really nice. It only took a few seconds to master the gestures without even thinking, very intuitive. The only gripe I have is how long it takes to get the recents menu to appear. I do wonder if One plus will stick with their gestures or go with Google's in Android P.
Just started using the gestures and I'll agree, they aren't as bad as the reviewers make them out to be. Takes some getting used to.
I am having an issue though, when I go to homescreen with the keyboard open, it will always input either a space or b/g. Anyone else having this?

I just tried to duplicate this issue for the last few minutes with no luck. are you using the stock keyboard? Are you swiping up from the bottom bezel of the phone or where the display starts?

Stock Gboard. I guess I just need to be more deliberate with the swipe. I can get it done now just need to get used to it.

I love the gestures. I only wish animations be a bit smoother. I would like to look see a nice balance between speed and smoothness.

I like the gestures but I want some more options. I added LMT Launcher to the sides as well so I don't always have to reach to the bottom.
I like the gestures but my recents isn't very smooth. I notice if I'm in an app and I hit recent there is a nice animation but if I'm on the home screen and hit recents I don't get that nice animation and it just goes to recents.

I'm surprised I took to the gestures as fast and as well as i did. I went back and forth a couple times the first hour and I have only been using the gestures since and this was late Friday after noon. the biggest thing I like about the OnePlus' gestures is whichever hand I'm holding the phone in I don't have to reach for the back button. The back gesture is in both corners for easy access to go back. In fact either hand is easy to use all gestures.
I do have an issue though as I use the swipe up option on folders to access them and I only keep folders on my 3 page dock setting in Nova launcher. I like a very clean home screen where I can see the wallpaper without clutter. This sometimes activates the home gestures when trying to access the center folder on the dock. I have learned that I have to swipe up on the very top edge of the folder icon to make sure it knows what I want.
I do wish that OnePlus keeps these gestures as an alternate option to Android P gesture implementation.
I'm really liking the gestures too and I was on of those guys that though "this isn't for me". I was wrong!
I just think they could be better, couple of more option for the right and left swipe up. Don't see the need to have the same gesture twice.
Back, recent, pull notification down, etc, would be three nice options to put in left or right swipe up. Screens this days are giganting, a gesture too push notification panel down would be great.
The swipe on the middle shouldn't be based on time, but on hight. This way we didn't have to wait for the recent apps to show up. Short swipe up = home, higher swipe up = recents. Would be faster this way.
But, anyway, loving it.
Yup. Love the gestures, just wish there was a quicker one for recent apps but that's minor. It's funny going back to my old phone to move over files I find myself constantly doing gestures and wondering why it's not working [emoji23]

I have already reported to MIUI team but while they do something about it, i've installed Edge Gestures to replace full screen mode, to hide navbar i've installed Navigation Gestures and finally AutoNotification for hidding apps in background notification. I have lost gestures animations but works perfect and the only issue it's volume bar in landscape like the image attached.
This is a nightmare and makes the device horrible to use.
I reported it to MIUI team weeks ago. The best solution for now is disable vibration on keypress within Google Keyboard, which makes it way less noticeable.
I'm using miui 10 weekly on eu roms, the problem is still there...
I'm on xiaomi.eu 8.8.3 and it seems like it has been solved through software update. I no longer have the issue testing in sketch app, or using any keyboard with full screen gestures.

Multitouch/screen issue ?

Hi there,
I just received my new Mi MIX 2S (actually, I got it 360 hours ago, if you know what I mean...) and I'm very satisfied with this toy
I'm on the last MIUI 10 Global Beta (8.7.5) since this afternoon, with SuperSU v2.82-SR5 and of course, with an unlocked bootloader.
However, I noticed a "strange" glitch/issue when I quick touching/typing.
It's seems that the screen not considering the different touch but acts like it does "two in one" touch.
I made a small video to illustrate the issue :
https://youtu.be/NdW8Zeo1MLQ
Does anyone has this too ?
Do you think it's an hardware or a software issue (like calibrate or touch-delay update) ?
Thanks

Damn... I bought mine on Joybuy, I'll try to deal with them about the warranty because I guess I can't contact Xiaomi directly.
The XDA Gesture workaround seems to be a good temporary way but, I really don't want to stay on a defective device...
I already did this with my Oneplus One (as a early buyer, I got a similar issue) and it was worst with time, I regret to had never return them

Bought mine on Aliexpress, no way I'll get a warranty without me paying $30 of shipping and lose a month without the phone.
I tried the XDA gesture thing, but you can't really get the same gestures as on MIUI (alsway have to make the gestures from the bottom of the phone it seems). So for now I'm just using it with this "bug", with the keyboard closing from time to time when I type.
Probably gonna get a Mi Max 3 to replace it anyway sooner or later.
I just made the thest you did with a drawing app and I got the same results when I multi touched the screen very quickly. I hadn't noticed this earlier because it didn't cause any problem for my daily use. Specifically, in which context did you notice that issue?

Thanks for your test and your answer.
In my case, it's very annoying when I (fast) typing a message, it causes a "fake" swipe and recude the keyboard or go back to home screen. I'll try to make a better screencast to show you in-use case.

Fine, I'll tell you my experience. I use to had the same problem, it's only noticeable using the keyboard and specially when you tap the letters located near the edge of the screen, specially like the Q and P. I'm almost completely sure that the problem is related to gestures, because the system thinks you're swiping, in my case I got some lag too in addition to the false back gesture. What I did to fix this is use the keyboard (Google keyboard) in one hand mode (long press the "," and this option will pop up next to the emoticon) and moving it to the center and the problem is gone. It's actually more comfortable this way because the space bar moves up and it's more accessible. You can play then with the keyboard size if you think it's too small. There are two others threads talking about the same problem and I recommended this solution in both, and it seems to work for others too. Try it and tell us.

Hi,
Actually, I think it's more an OS issue than an hardware one.
After some tries and research, I noticed that these "screen glitches" are bad interpretations of fast multitouching, translate into swipe/gesture.
These swipe/gesture come with the gesture navigation mode, included in full-screen desplay (and which allow to hide the bottom navigation bar).
If you re-enable the "classic" display, with the bottom bar, the issue doesn't seem to exist. So, I guess for MIUI, some fast-typing/touching are interpreted as gestures (swipe down-to-up = home, left-to-right = previous...)
In the same registry, I noticed that, if you use a scrollable widget (Google Agenda in planning display) and if you scroll down on it (in order to see the bottom lines for example), MIUI interpret it as a down-to-up gesture (and so, go back to home, or search).
So, I really hope that in a future update, the sensibility of these gestures could be decreased/improved...
For now, you could :
Enable the one-hand mode ok Google Keyboard as proposed by @rodaven (but personnaly, I dislike the fact to have a small keyboard with a lot of lost space around it...)
Disable the full sceen display mode (and so, say goodbye to the gestures feature)
Stay on full screen mode and gestures, get upset when you write a message and pray for un update

But that's different from the multitouch issue that is in the main post (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdW8Zeo1MLQ&feature=youtu.be), isn't it?

In my opinion, it's the same issue.
Due to the full screen/gesture feature, fast multitouches are interpreted as a gesture.
On my video, you could see it.
On the issue from MIUI website, users asked that swipe/gesture are disable over keyboard when it's on-screen.
I think it should be a solution to combine gesture navigation and fast multitouch/type.
Personnaly, I disable full screen/gesture navigation (for now, sadly) and the issue desappear, that's why I'm pretty sure it's a software issue (which concern very model with this feature).
I changed my screen
Actually i cracked my screen and replaced new lcd from aliexpress claimed original. I checked it is JDI. But the touch issues still persist. I think its xiaomi driver.. or i dont know.. i really regret having this phone

I tested more, disabling fulls creen gestures and the problem persist. There is a video with the keyboard trying to type "alguna", sometimes it makes a gesture "left to right":

It's very disapointing, I had touch screen problems with my oneplus one and now with the mix 2s.

Touchscreen insensitive

I've noticed the touchscreen is a little bit slow/lazy when I activate navigation gestures.
The lazy response area is only on the bottom-left of the display, and it concerns only the "A" letter of my qwerty keyboard (a very small area).
This lazy response of the touchscreen is on all other apps, not only in the keyboard, and it concerns only that small area.
If I use navigation buttons, the problem disappear.
I don't know if this issue was present also in previous OS version because I've tried using navigation gestures today
I've the Nex S 8/256GB, PD1805_A_1.17.10
Anyone noticed this?
Exactly the same here...
Sorry for this (maybe too) late answer: Have exactly the same issue. I'm used to write really fast on my phone, but since having the Vivo Nex, I'm slowed down extreamly because of this. Also for me just the "A" letter is the problem. Doesn't matter which keyboard or size (tried several), it's always laggy...
I really hoped this would be a thing of the past after the newest "Funtouch-update" from some days ago, as they've been writing about "better touchscreen accuracy" in the changelog... But nobchanges at all concerning this point...
Did anyone already found a solution against this, without having to turn on those ugly navigation buttons on the bottom of the screen? I really like the three swiping gestures.
Same on my side
Seems as my previous post has been deleted / went lost...
I've exactly the same problem here with the "A" key of the keyboard being really slow on my Vivo Nex S (256GB, global version). Hoped this problem would fade away after the newest "Funtouch" update 3 days ago, because they wanted to have solved exactly this problem, what Vivo told us in the changelog...
But all kept the same. Tried already three different keyboards with different settings, no success. Does someone has a solution for this?
But I really DON'T like having the navigation buttons visible, so this is no option for me. I definitely want to use the original slide actions for the three buttons below the screen...
To be honest: I'm using the Nova Launcher over the Funtouch System (the Funtouch launcher is absolutely useless). Could this have an influence?
This happends to me too.It seems there s area down to the bottom of screen is not sensitive enough.
I have vivo 1805 which is Taiwan version, not sure if this model same as the global version. And I also try to flash the chinese version ROM but failed cause of the signature difference. The update progress in Taiwan is not as fast as chinese. Hope VIVO in Taiwan could release the fix soon.

Well, not sure if this is the same issue on my device, as the sensitivity seems to be ok on mine, but I have to push the "a" button much longer (not stronger) than all others. So just a laggy key... And REALLY annoying!
But "good" to hear that others seem to have comparable problems. If there just finally would be a fix for this on the Vivo phones...?
Hey guys. I have been facing the same issue and started experimenting with navigation replacements. So as you guys realize, sensitivity is just fine when using the nav buttons but there are a lot of keyboard mistypes when using Vivo's own navigation gestures.
Therefore, after expermintation, I can confirm that the app called "Fluid Navigation" is an awesome replacement for the navigtion gestures. XDA Navigation gestures is slightly incompatible with the Nex. But Fluid Navigation works perfect.
So all you need to do is follow these steps
1, Switch to Nav buttons
2, Install the app
3, Grant accessibility permission
4, Grant Write Secure Settings through ADB. The app gives instructions for this
5, Hide the nav bar through the app
6, Customize the gestures in the app. It even allows quick settings swipe up.
Hope this helps. Enjoy guys. You will definitely feel the difference
