TF Barely plays 480p video! (32GB, Prime ROM)

I'm having trouble figuring out what's going on here. My Asus Transformer (Prime Rom, dual-core 1ghz Tegra with 1gb RAM, ~20gb free SSD space) Is having problems playing video. It stuters the sound (rarely), or the sound plays normal 1:1 but the video plays at a speed of 1:2 or worse (1/2 speed) so after a few seconds its unwatchable, not to mention that if I watch 15+ seconds it crashes the app. Also, if there are Subtitles, they keep pace with the audio without issue. on a few rare occasions, (notably 1 set of rips) the video plays fine but the audio is severely compromised where people speaking sounds like somone playing notes on a low-quality synthesizer...
Most videos are encoded as MKV (varying audio codecs, all the way from low-quality 56kb all the way up to FLAC)
I've played off internal storage, MicroSD, Dock+USB (flash and USB HDD), Dock+SDHC, none seem to make a difference.
My guess is that it's a app or rom issue, since my EVO (1ghz single core, 512mb ram, CYM rom) plays full 1080p video without a hiccup (while mirroring it over HDMI!!!).
Can anyone suggest a player that will play 720p without a problem? 1080p would be nice. If this is an Android problem, is there any kind of workaround without down-grading my videos? (I mean 480p already doesnt look great on my TF's screen, 240p would REALLY suck...)

You never mentioned what player you're using, but Tegra 2 doesn't support MKV containers properly, it needs to be fed raw h264 streams for hardware acceleration to kick in. The only player that does this is DicePlayer. It'll demux the mkv file and decode video with hardware and audio with software giving you lagless experience. Your experience with FLAC may vary though.

I tried the built-in video as well as "Mobo Player" which claimed it had MKV support.
Someone else on another forum suggested Dice, since it's got a free trial I'll be installing it this weekend and seeing how well it works. (While I would have preferred a free solution I'm willing to pay a few dollars to support devs as long as they're not asking like $19.99 or something for a dinky little app)

Give Dice Player a try. It's by far the best player now. It claims to us the actual hardware instead of software decoding.

Hmm, do you have streaming problems too? For some reason, my netflix seems to be lagging in video now. It didn't use to (pure-root, no prime) then it did (prime 1.8? 1.6? can't remember but it was 1.x), didn't lag (2.0.1) but is now laggy again (2.0.3 or whatever the latest patch is).

I'm getting mixed results.
Yes, a certain number of videos will play now, but some still wont it still says it's unable to use hardware decoding. However these are 720p and 1080p (480p plays fine now) so I'm wondering if it's an HD issue... (Yes I did install the Tegra Plugin) So it _IS_ an improvement... I'll have to compare the encoding info to see what else is different between the ones that play and the ones that dont...
Overall, I am pleased with Dice and will likely put up the $6 the developer is asking for. it DOES appear to be Hardware decoding and hopefully it will only improve from here (considering my EVO, with half the specs, can decode + Mirror 1080p I assume this is an issue that will be resolved with time and dev work on the app/plugin)

The thing with Dice is, it'll use Hardware acceleration for Main Profile 1080p (I forgot what level) and High Profile 720p with certain reference frames, etc. Exceed it and Tegra 2 can't decode it so it becomes software. I believe the full specification can be found through a search "tegra 2 h264 decoding profile"

After digging through the dumps of the videos I found my problem.
I mislabeled them...
What I labed as "720p" had a resolution of "1920x1080" I had switched to true HD recording about the time I got my BluRay drive (as opposed to my old HD-DVD drive) and for some reason screwed up and labled some BR rips as 720p...
After comparing the dumps and re-labeling, I've found nothing 720p or lower that Dice wont play (and with shocking efficiency! 2-3 hours of 720p playback (mostly over internal speaker) from my USB HDD and I am still at 97% power!!!
I'll still look over the codecs that Tegra can support, maybe I can find a way to get a "low profile" 1080p sometime, but for now since I dont have anything except my PC monitor that can exceed 720p, I'm good ^_^

Nevermind the 97% bit, I forgot the dock had a seperate battery, the dock was down to 16%... though I think that's still impressive for what I was doing...

Unfortunately hardware decode of HD H264/AAC files is still broken with HC 3.2.1. It used to work with 3.1, but got broken with 3.2. It doesn't matter which player you use.
I have a ticket open with Asus. They initially said they would fix it in 3.2.1, but didn't. When I then told them this in the ticket I had open, they said "nobody has reported a problem". This is in the very same ticket where I reported the break 2 months ago! I got quite cross at this point as it clearly hasn't been passed up the chain.
Anyway, they have promised to look into it. I've supplied them with a file that plays back with hardware decode in 3.1, but doesn't in 3.2.X. Let's hope they sort it out soon.

I have to agree with this. MX Player is all I use now. It will dim the button bar and notifications, blank the tablet screen when connected to HDMI, and can easily play back all my (previously) problem mkv files with hardware on the video and software on the audio.
And its free, something DICE player cannot claim.

Video Playback on this phone is really slow, even when playing AVI files on MX Player

Has anybody else experienced this issue? Dice player is slow as hell too. Is there a setting that needs to be changed before the One XL will play video correctly or do video players need to be updated to work with the S4 processor?

One thing's for sure, video playback on devices optimized for particular encoding settings is optimum when those are followed.
Having said that, I have no problem playing 720p encodes in H.264 format using Handbrake with a profile that is based of the standard high profile but with B-frames, CABAC, 8x8 transform and weighted P-frames all turned off. These aren't necessarily the settings needed for optimal playback on THIS device but they are what I use for reliable playback on my Tegra 2 based Galaxy Tab 10.1 and those files that I've encoded for that play just as well on my One X.
I just dragged over a 1080p video shot on my Nikon D7000 onto my One X without any conversion at all and it plays perfectly fine using Dice Player. I was surprised.
Wonder if it's your encodes.

So far the best performance I've gotten on AVI without re-encoding is Bsplayer.

In MX Player, change from "H/W" mode in the top right to "S/W (fast)" - see if that helps.

Another vote for BSPlayer. I was a big Rock Player proponent for a long time. But it doesn't seem to be updated any longer.
Also, similar to another previous response, forcing from HW to SW mode may help. Its a bit of a crap shoot depending on the encoding settings and codec used. But BS Player works for most things.

[Q] Laggy when playing video 1080p with VP9 video format

Hi, Recently I've downloaded video 1080p from youtube but when playing it, the video laggy but the audio just playing properly fine...
I thought it because the decoder set to H/W, but when switched to S/W both video & audio become laggy, then try switched to H/W+ it become worse (doesn't support this kind video it says...).
When I see media info of video, it use VP9 format video.

I've tried on 3 devices; Asus Zenfone 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, and LG G2, all of it have the same issues...

Because I've tried other video 1080p, it can be played properly.
Oh FYI, I've tried using few other video player, and none of its can play the video as good as MX Player. That's why I've been using MX Player as default video player.

All 1080p videos are not same.
It may lag at various parameters like higher frame rate, bitrate, color depth,....etc.
For example if you consider a video 1080p @ 30fps inorder to display 1 sec of videos it needs to decode 30 frames. Where as in 1080p @ 60 fps it requires 60 frames to be decoded. So, It will require the double power. Like wise various encoding parameters matters in video playback.
Second, H/W uses your hardware's native decoder . If the codec is natively supported by your device, H/W decoder will be the best option.
In case of S/W decoder, it supports more video formats since it depends on the ffmpeg. But, decoding will be completely done one CPU. So, it needs very high cpu power. That's why it's more laggy.

VP9 isn't a widely supported format. That's likely why HW and HW+ don't work well with it; most devices don't have VP9 hardware acceleration.
SW rendering of a 1080p video is very demanding. Even on the most powerful devices, since there's no hardware acceleration, expect performance to be sub-par. Currently, devices on the market can only SW render 720p smoothly.
This being said, for SW mode, try Settings > Decoder > use speedup tricks. See if that helps a little bit on SW.
Ultimately, the best option is to reencode the video to something like H264/AVC mp4.

Can you explain more where you're trying to playback the video? VP9 support is built in to Android from KitKat+ and should not have an issue playing back. Additionally, can you try playing back the video on Chrome on Android and see if there are still decode issues?

I see... So the point is the problem because most devices don't have VP9 hardware accelaration yet, especially for 1080p VP9...
Well... I've tried using SW speed up trick, it didn't much help...
Yeah...maybe the best option is to reencode the video to H264...or download 720p version..., cause the 720p VP9 can be played perfectly fine.
Still... I hope the MX Player developer team has plan to improve playback for 1080p VP9 video

As I said before, I'm trying to play 1080p VP9 video (that I've downloaded from youtube using IDM on computer) on my Asus Zenfone 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, & LG G2 using MX Player.
But when I playing it, the video is laggy on all devices...
Surely you can streaming it using youtube app & chrome android and it plays well till the end cause the available quality option in those apps is up to 720p (the 1080p quality option is hidden on those apps so I can't select it to test if it plays well or not).

That would be something you would have to ask the ffmpeg team to do, since MX uses their codecs. Unless the MX dev has a magic trick up his sleeve, I don't think there's much else MX can do to further improve SW playback performance for a video that exceeds the CPU's capabilities...
Likewise, on a hardware acceleration, it's limited by the hardwaree put in place by the manufacturer... so this aspect would need a new device.

Read the second post. Video encoding parameters matters.
If you can't play in H/W or H/W+ decoder, Don't expect the smooth playback on S/W. It fully depends on CPU. If is laggy then your processor is not powerful enough. Sometime enabling the speed up tricks may reduce the lagging.
One more thing, using CPU will drain your battery faster than H/W. When CPU runs it's maximum speed for long time it will emit more heat which may lead to issues.

The chance of that happening, I can't see to be high. The MPEG consortium probably pays a lot to lobby chipset makers to only support MPEG formats, such as H.264 and H.265.

Lolno, it's just that industry is not interested in VP9. Even if they don't have to pay royalties they still have to develop asics (and h/w engineers are saying that it's not h/w friendly) and include them into the chip. It still costs a lot.
And what is the point of supporting vp9? It's an ugly google toy that they're ready to abandon (say hello to vp10 in 2015).

Ah yes, ASICs. I don't think manufacturers would be very happy at making more dies for new ICs. They already aren't happy with being forced to support Hi10p in H.265.

becayse you can't play vp9 if you download youtube videos with IDM (internet download manager)
because it is bull**** and its newer versions used idmmkvlib.01 codec.so when downloadimg it not only download andit convert into ist bull**** special format.so won't play withx pr others.try another downloader or manual download yt videos i recomend.

I have a request, but at the same time I don't know if this could be achieved at the software level.
Many have heard of video interpolation on TVs specially from Samsung and Sony TVs but with different names.
So the question is: could this be implemented in MX Player for live processing? If not, could it be pre-processing or even converting the video into a new proceed file? Then it would play it normally.

No no, there's no lag at all, but I'm talking about movies and such media files with 23 fps, that if possible the smoothness of frames could be increased like how video interpolation works and seems as if it was 60 fps.

No video / black screen on philips android TV

I just bought a Philips 32PFS6402 Android TV (version QM164E.).16.102.24).
Unfortunately the default video player, didn't have the possibility to adjust the subtitles, so I had to look for alternatives. Your MX player was highly recommended and the features I was looking for seems to be in place (remember where you stopped a video stored on USB and continue from that point on the next time. And adjust the timing of the subtitles while playing the video.)
so far so good. But unfortunately, not all video's are shown correctly. For some video's I only see a black screen. There is audio and ther are subtitles, but the screen stays black.
The codec info for the specific file:
MPEG-4 Video (XVID)
1920*800
Strange thing is, I can play the same movie using the default player.
Any suggestions?

Please collect a bug report quickly after playing the file that has issues and share with us. It will help us to investigate further and provide a better resolution.

First of all, thanks for your reaction. How do I collect a bug report? I didn't see any options for that.
For you info. I tried Kodi today as well and experienced the same problems. No video image, while there is sound and there are subtitles. I find it to be very strange, since the same movie does play in the default player (no idea which one that is).
Today the movie I tested yesterday on MX Player, resulted in some kind of freeze. no response what so ever.

Based on the information you have shared, it seems that your device's hardware-accelerated decoders are buggy or broken. Request you to tap on the HW button on the playback screen and check other decoders. It may work for you.
