Since updating to 5.1.8 - No notifications for Slack, Skype or email! - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

UPDATE: Factory Reset solved issue with notifications not coming in. But all notifications now play at 100% volume, even with ringer and notification volume set all the way down to 10%.
Phone Status: Bootloader unlocked, unrooted & running completely stock. Notification slider is set to "Ring".
I must say, I'm extremely annoyed with my Oneplus 6 and OOS at the moment. I was out of the office today, enjoying time with the wife on her rare day off. I kept thinking to myself that it was an oddly slow day since I wasn't getting any Slack, Skype for Business, or email notifications. But it is a Friday, so I didn't put much additional thought behind it.
I got back home late this afternoon and logged onto my computer, only to discover that I've been missing time sensitive messages and emails from clients all freaking day. Needless to say, this is quite frustrating and it has even put me in a bit of a bind with one of my clients. It's especially infuriating considering that it's not just 1 app, it's 3 of my most crucial apps. I even have the Slack, Newton Mail and Skype for Business apps all set to "Don't Optimize" within battery settings. So there is no reason these notifications shouldn't be coming through. I've tried rebooting and that hasn't solved the problem. Even as I sit here and watch new emails and Slack messages come in on my computer, I'm getting absolutely no alerts/notifications on my phone.
This is not an issue I've ever experienced with my Pixel XL, Pixel 2 XL or my iPhone X. It's a big enough problem that I've resorted to popping my sim back into my iPhone X and throwing the OnePlus 6 in a drawer, until I can get this problem sorted. I'm so pissed that I'm considering just putting the OP6 on Craigslist and never buying a OnePlus phone again. If I can't trust it to give me notifications when they come in, it's useless to me and, quite frankly, costing me money.
However, I will say that prior to receiving the OOS update to 5.1.8 yesterday, I do not recall missing any app notifications. So I'm thinking the recent update is the culprit. Is anyone else experiencing issues like this? If so, have you found a solution?
Regardless, it's quite disheartening to discover the hard way that this phone/software isn't able to properly handle something as basic as prompt message notifications. Even if I get the problem solved I'm not sure I'll ever fully trust it again and will inevitably resort to constantly opening each app, just to make sure.

Do you have advanced optimization turned on? Did you check Settings>Notifications to be sure they weren't blocked somehow?
You might try clearing data and reinstalling the apps. I have not had any issues with notifications nor heard of this issue from anyone else, thought I don't use Slack or Skype.

Just checked and "Advanced Optimization" is not enabled. I also went into Settings > Notifications and confirmed that those apps are not blocked. I might try a full factory reset to see if that solves it. Super annoying.

I think a full wipe is needed with OEM ROM updates on this phone, at least if you have root/TWRP. Mine goes all ****y with notifications and bluetooth and fingerprint in 3rd party apps when I update.

I think you're right. I've received 3 software updates since getting the phone and each time it throws my finger prints out of whack. Deleting them and re-creating them fixes it though.
I'll go through the factory reset and get everything reinstalled when I get more time in the morning.

I'm having the same issue with telegram..what's app seems to be working fine though

I'm having the same issue with Aquamail and my Facebook app (Power Facebook) and both are set to ignore battery optimizations.

While I'm sorry to hear you guys are experiencing these issues, I must say that it's relieving to discover I'm not the only one. I'm convinced the 5.1.8 update broke something with notifications. I'm hoping a factory reset fixes it. Going to try that here in a bit.

These updates are breaking a lot of things. Bluetooth functionality for me was fine in 5.1.5, when I received the phone - was broken since updated.
Oneplus needs to concentrate on quality control. It is clearly the weakest point of the phone and the company.
Is it surprising that Oneplus paid an influencer to make a video about how their quality control is so great?
I think not.

Yeah, I'm thinking about doing a clean install of Android P DP2 to see if that solves my issues. Not to happy with the "stable" OOS, at the moment.

I had issues with Hangouts mainly and not receiving any notifications so I downloaded the full 5.1.8 zip, factory reset then installed it in twrp and now no issues

Done with P dp2?

Have you turned off "advanced optimisation" in Battery settings?

Didn't bother with P DP2 since it apparently has a few notable bugs, including Google Assistant not working properly.

Yes, we discussed this in post #2 and #3.
I ended up not having time to mess with my phone this weekend. And things have actually gotten worse. For some reason my ringtone and notifications (when they do come through) play at maximum volume, even if I turn the notification sound slider all the way down to minimum. Reboots don't solve it. Also, my ringtone is randomly changing to this obnoxious beeping noise. I reset it back to the "OnePlus Tone" and it works for 1-2 calls. Then on the 3rd call it's back to the obnoxious new beeping tone, regardless of who is calling.
It's as if the phone is possessed, at this point.

Yeah, I think I need to do a fresh install of the 5.1.8 factory image. I don't see another way to solve this. OnePlus has really caused quite the mess with these updates. It's probably resulting in costly warranty returns/exchanges for them as well. If a fresh install of 5.1.8 doesn't solve it I'll be selling the phone. These days, I don't have time to be dealing with ridiculous issues like the ones this phone has.

Sounds like you have malware. Or you are going crazy
EDIT: if you want a solid but discounted phone, check out Samsung website for discounts on their S9s - they have run $150 and $200 discounts on S9s in the past, and I got one and set it up for a friend. Top notch. But those discounts don't usually last more than a day.

I did a factory reset then installed TWRP and reinstalled the stock 5.1.8 ROM through TWRP a few hours ago. All has been working fine since. We'll see if it stays that way.

Same with Spotify, 5.1.8 seems to be killing the notification so the app gets killed in the background. Notifications seem to be wonky on 5.1.8.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6003 using Tapatalk

It's been a few days since I did a factory reset and fresh install on 5.1.8. Notifications seem to be coming in as they should be. However, I'm finding that no matter what audio level I set my notifications and ringer to, notifications always play at full 100% volume. This remains the case even if I turn ringer and notification volume down to like 10%.
I swear this phone is possessed.

SK4G Software FLAWED!

What the hell is going on. I tried resetting and everything, even exchanged the device and the new one is doing the same thing! Also vibrating and force closing it is getting on my nerves! The followig seems to happen after a while I am TIRED of having to turn of my phone and turn it back on! ~ I go to play a .mp3 it says " FIle type not supported"...My .mp3 ringtone does not work the phone just vibrates the selected ringtone doesnt work. I got too take a picture or record video it says "Camera Failed"....I get a visual voicemail....the "play" button is grayed out and I have to turn off phone turn it BACK On just to check my voicemail. Also occassioally my sms wont work either. I turn my phone off and on every morning and throughout day I notice this and its getting REAL annoying !
Well first off, this isn't a software flaw, this is specific to you, as we have many users here including myself who are using these phones daily without the issues you are describing.
You had said that the issue was with an mp3, can you upload that somewhere for us to test on our phones?
As far as the camera and visual voicemail, I've never heard of that issue before, perhaps you ended up with a bad phone again?
I am getting the frequent force close with messaging. I also have had problems with the camera and idk about the mp3 stuff I haven't put any ringtones on the phone yet. This is getting really annoying I agree.
I don't have any issues with mine? Have you guys done anything like rooting or flashing anything?
Nope, completely stock. The most I have done is take a screen shot lol.
hmm maybe some have a defect? It's not all SK4g's though, as some of us have no issues at all. I would suggest getting it replaced by T-Mobile, as this is a factory defect. not sure why that happened to you guys. has anyone else had these issues and found any fixes?
That's kinda tough the hearest t-mobile is like 4 hours from here /:
One of my friends who went with me on the trip to get the SK also got one and he says he's never gotten a force close so you may be right. But could it have anything to do with the amount of texts I send/receive? Because I have to admit it is pretty excessive. The failing to send messages when I am receiving one simultaneously is expected, but not the force closes in my opinion.
It shouldn't force close on you. I know mine fails to send every once in a while too, as I text a lot (kinda the reason I got the phone). failing to send isn't as big of a deal, as it notifies you and you just have to click resend. Not entirely sure why it's force closing though? I wonder if a logcat might help? if you have adb installed, you can try adb logcat and see what shows up when you force close? if we can find the issue there, it might be fixable from our end. all depends on where the flaw lies/if it's just a bad apk somehow or if there's an actual hardware issue or something.
I'll do a log next time there is a fc, I'm having another issue or it may be related, but this one is with WidgetLocker I believe. Sometimes when I go to unlock the phone it'll freeze up and then I dont know how to explain it, but it almost seems like it resets but it really doesnt. The phone will blackout for a little then the homescreen will pop up and service will gone for a while until the cards are read just like if I rebooted.
That might be a function of WidgetLocker, I used it on my old G1 and it always hung and black screened at me.

Yeah I know it does that from time to time, but on my previous phone it wouldn't do that reboot thing where it would lose connection then resend my latest text messages once it reconnected.
I'm not sure why it's doing that. My guess would be that the issues are caused because the SK4G doesn't use a normal lock screen. widgetlocker uses some modification of the system file for the lock screen, and perhaps it's not sure what to modify? just my 2 cents.

That's what I was thinking too, I'm gonna uninstall it for a bit and see if anything changes.
is anyone else having an issue with notification volume? everytime i reboot my SK, my notification volume gets pushed all the way down to nothing, so i don't get a sound notification for texts, emails, etc, until i move the notif. volume back up in my settings. i did root with the one-click for the Epic 4G.
This is a new UI so alot of the apps i.e. widgets you may put on will cause issues. If you like certain apps contact the dev so your device is supported correctly. Still to new to get mad at it till sum of the bugs get worked out. I did notice a couple of times when I left screen on in pocket on accident that when I go to use it again it doesn't respond to any touch but can move courser around till rebooted then its ok. If some don't already know the sk4g is almost the same as the epic. The sk4g is still a badass phone for 100bucks.
Same as the OP
I know this is a little old, but I've experienced the same problem as the OP so it seems they are not alone with this problem.
I actually tried two different newly formatted SD cards (because I thought it may have been the SD card), and still would have the problem. Then I actually did swap phones about a month ago and it seemed the problem would now take several days to resurface instead of several hours. And I could deal with that.
Since the OTA update about 2 weeks ago, the phone has been back on it's original BS as the OP posted and it's driving me nuts. I actually missed some emergency calls last night because the mp3 ringtone didn't work so I'm finding a solution to this issue today or trashing this phone.
My belief is that there is something interfering with the phone's ability to read the SD card for media. Because other apps I have that save to the SD card or read from it work fine. So I'm going to master reset it and not download any of my apps and see what happens when I set an mp3 ringtone. If it makes it through the day with no hiccups, I'll slowly add back one app at a time until hopefully I can find the culprit.
bipoler if you'd like, we can exchange via PM what apps we both have downloaded and see if we have some in common that may be problems.
I'll post back with any progress.
I've been having the problem with ringtones not working, just getting silence when I get a call. for me it seems to happen when I set a ringtone from the app Zedge, I don't think it happens when I use ringtones from the Android System, which would make sense if the issue is related to reading the sdcard. gonna go back to a system ringtone and see what happens today.
Yeah my phone had all those problems, but I installed the Lightning rom and all those problems went away, except for the ones about messages failing...I text A LOT
Lightning ROM
Thanks for that info on the Lightning Rom. I will check that out. Phone has been working flawlessly all day with the mp3 ringtone and no extra apps besides the master reset. I might give it until the morning before I start putting them back on.
On stock id install so many apps that ran on the background that id get delay from opening closing swiping and turning onthe phone.. so I wiped it installed a custom rom and just kept the essentials.. havnt had a problem since... well.. occasionly ill have to odi but that's on purpose

Has happened here twice. Had to reboot to fix it. My worry is that this could happen during the night so that the phone won't wake me up in the morning (the alarms don't sound either - in fact no sound at all can be played, be it from ringer, notifications, Spotify or YouTube).
Hasn't occurred now for three days, but I've rebooted each day due to separate issue which involves not notifications not being received unless I open the app (happens in Facebook Messenger and Signal).

Was able to find out the cause... Was the hike app intefering with system sounds.
Once notifications start coming up without sound, clear away the hike app from recents.. should fix the issue... Atleast it did for me
I'm noticing the exact same issue. Sitting here WATCHING my phone ring and making no sound. What exactly is the "hike" app? Is that something you've installed or is it a native app? I don't think I have that on my phone so I'm looking for a solution.

I am also running into this issue. Im still in the process of uninstalling apps one by one to narrow it down if it is an app thats causing it. Has anyone pin pointed what is causing this? Im almost ready to factory reset the phone and add the apps back one by one but I would rather not spend the time.

I had that same issue with certain apps. For me though, I didn't realize the extent of Data Saver and had to allow Gmail and whatnot to have unrestricted access and then they started popping in right away.
You wouldn't happen to use Data Saver on your phone?
Just a thought
Cheers!
I appear to have this issue however, safe mode, factory resetting, etc does not fix it. I do not get notification/phone/music sounds.
This issue is still there even after the 8.1 update... Anyone got it fixed?
For me the notifications won't make any sounds, they pop up but silently. I tried playing some music and the speaker works, I also didn't have any issue with alarms. Just notifications.

I have a Nexus 6P and my wife has a Pixel XL and we were both having the same issue with 8.1, no notification sound with text messages and call ring tone. I did most of the suggestions that I have found online (factory reset, clear cache/data in messaging app, change sound) but none of them worked. I was about to downgrade to 8.0 but I saw that both of the apps (messages and phone) were being "optimized". I disabled battery optimization on messages and phone, rebooted and so far it seems to have fixed it. My only guess is that they optimized those apps a little too much. Good luck.

I also noticed the issue on v8.1 that I flashed a few days ago. Thought it would have been fixed by now. Ended up downgrading to v7.1.2 again to fix the issue.
Oreo is NOT ready for prime time in my opinion.

Notifications suck. Why are they so delayed and random?

What's going on with notifications? They are showing up at completely random times on my Pixel. Just got a gmail notification from an email that arrived 3 hours ago. This has been happening constantly. I wake up in the morning, look at the phone, see no emails, then suddenly a bunch pop up. I thought it might be related to some sort of doze feature, but it's happening even when I've been using my phone quite regularly.
This is ridiculous. Never had this happen before.
I agree. It's gotta be doze.
I'm shocked this isn't a widely discussed topic. It's happening non-stop. I just missed an email fro 4 hours ago and I was even using my phone several times to make calls during that time, so it wasn't even idle.
WTF is going on?
I KNOW YOU SAID GMAIL APP
However, a LOT of apps are not updated for 7.1 so any number of old apps that control notifications in some way may be breaking things.
It sounds exactly like something is interfering with the ability of phone to check or deliver notifications on time. Like a faulty app making a request or insisting some loop then crashing finally and allowing notifications through.
I think Doze is interfering with SOME of my notifications, but my problems don't seem as severe as all of yours.
You can troubleshoot by removing old apps and testing if notifications are blocked, then add apps back 1 by 1.

This is a *BAD* problem, Google!
I know people who had this exact issue on the Nexus 6P. It made the phone *unusable*. The Pixel may not be quite as bad, but it's not acceptable to me.
I'm wondering if some of the other "Google Services" like all the "com.android...." app's or maybe some of the qualcomm, like com.qualcomm.fastdormancy maybe? I guess I can start trying them, but there are a lot, so if you know the key ones, it would help.
Thanks for any further info.

Ok... I just installed Maildroid Pro and didn't see the problem with it, and coincidentally also received Gmail messages at the same time... even after uninstalling Maildroid, Gmail is still now showing notifications... but perhaps the delay is just still random. Like some component of the OS happens to be loaded right now or "not dozing" and so everything is fast... but time will tell if the delay comes back.
This really needs to be fully ironed out by Google. How can they release brand new devices that don't receive timely notifications?? Isn't that something "mission critical" that you would test? This is a major error by Google -- hope they fix it fast, but some people have been waiting for a year with their Nexus devices and apparently it's still not fixed, even on 7.1.1.
Happens on my 6p too. Definitely a 7.1 issue

Most likely an individual application problem. It's not the phone or it would affect all apps.
I get timely notifications for text, calendar, and Keep. I don't use notifications for email so cannot comment on that.
It does look like perhaps turning off the battery optimization for Gmail may have fixed this? Either that or my phone just hasn't yet had time to go into "deep doze" vs. lighter doze. I'll be watching during my 15 day potential refund period . Other than this issue, there are maybe a few minor tweaks that would be nice, but it's otherwise an amazing phone so I want to keep it!
Notifications on the Pixel phone are pure garbage IMO. Half the time I don't get one really. Either the LED light does not light up or Ambient display does nothing. Love everything about this phone except notifications. I am almost thinking about switching to the Oneplus 3T because of this...I hope Google is aware how crappy they are on this phone....
As a member pointed out, it's not the phone but something in 7.1. So no point saying u will return the phone. On my OP3 also i had delays in notification using cm14. So ya it's probably something software related and can be fixed easily.
Hmm weird that I'm not seeing this issues. If Gmail is giving your the issue use another email client?

I'm actually a Pixel (Android 7.1) owner now (never mind my user name). I've had the notification delay issue too -- mainly on Gmail. I disabled battery optimization and that seemed to have helped some during the day when I use my phone from time to time. What I noticed is that after leaving it sitting at night (tho' still plugged in) it seemed to have entered "deep doze" perhaps (tho' it's not supposed to while plugged in, if I understand that correctly). At any rate, it missed a Gmail notification in the early morning, but then after "waking up" the phone it seems to have been acting normally through the rest of the day.
I have a Galaxy S7 that I was using as a test comparison. It's on Android 6.X (Marshmallow -- also supposed to have doze) and it got an email notification no problem this morning when the Pixel failed.
Google really needs to listen to this and fix it!!! Professional business users cannot afford to miss email notifications!!!
The problem is also on 7.1.1 not just 7.1
Gmail gave me sync issues (and therefore delayed notifications) on my g4 with 6.0 once. Couldn't get it to work until I wiped the data for it.
On pixel, you also need to be sure the data saver option isn't the culprit. Either turn it off, or make Gmail an exception. That option will cause delayed notifications for nearly any app, as it won't be syncing hardly at all on mobile networks.
Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
Unrestricted data usage (i.e. no data saver) and background data are both set to "on" for Gmail in my Pixel (7.1)... battery optimization is also turned off.
I now believe the problem is associated with "deep doze". I appear to get Gmail notifications ok during the day, but if the phone sits idle overnight, then by the morning I will NOT receive Gmail notifications until the phone has been woken up. I actually have to manually check / refresh Gmail and then after that it appears to be "awake."
This problem is really serious -- very unprofessional to not have timely notifications in a "professional" device / OS. Android / Google teams need to escalate this. I've seen reports since way back in 2015 on Nexuses.. some people have pounded Google w/ requests for over a year and this is still not fixed yet!!!
There must be a way to fully disable "deep doze" for an app and all related services required for its operation.
This tempts me to consider delving into AOSP and cooking up a ROM which would give total control over doze and anything else needed to make the phone actually *work*.
so at the people who got problems... do you marked the app that are effected in the settings/battery opt-out for the battery improving option in standby so they can stay connect for push?

I'm shocked this isn't a widely discussed topic. It's happening non-stop. I just missed an email fro 4 hours ago and I was even using my phone several times to make calls during that time, so it wasn't even idle.
WTF is going on?

I have delayed gmails on my xperia z3. Always have. If you want an instant message, use an instant message client. Emails are seen as something you can wait for, to save battery life. Obviously if you are also having delays on Facebook Messenger etc then you have some other problem.

That's hardly a solution. That doesn't fly in the business world, nor do I would I want companies and clients messaging me on a bunch of random instant message apps.

In the "business world" - that is, on my work pc - my emails arrive immediately. But i'm not using gmail on my phone. You probably want something a little more robust if you're going to rely on emails turning up immediately. They were never designed to be instant, or secure.

Android Pie Stable: Issues and Fixes Thread

Since we've been talking about Pie in at least four different threads, I thought I'd create a single one to address, list and possibly fix all the issues that are being experienced with the gradual release of Android 9 on Nokia 7 Plus. Mods: I'm assuming this is helpful, but if you think this thread is redundant feel free to delete it.
IMPORTANT: Before you do anything or think something is broken, make sure you restart the phone twice once you've installed the update. If issues are still there, you might go for a hard reset which is always helpful for creating a clean system environment.
In any case, you're welcome to add to this list and help others find solutions. This is what I found so far:
Battery draining
Most users noticed a decrease in SOT, for some this is even 2-3 hours less than on Oreo. While it might be peculiar to Pie itself, it is worth noticing that the new Adaptive Battery feature takes some time to adjust according to how you use your phone and learn what apps to handle and how. You should also check that no app permissions have changed since the update, or that no unwanted processes are misbehaving because of it (see below).
@trveller72 points out a neat trick: deactivating the automatic Battery Saver (Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > UNCHECK "Turn on automatically") seems to extend battery life a lot.
Heating issues
Regardless of the SOT, these should not be there. I experienced the thing myself and in deep October no phone should burn into one's pocket, whether idle or when doing some light browsing. If you're having heating issues, this is most likely related to processes misbehaving and abusing your CPU when they shouldn't (either because of an application bug, or because of something gone wrong after the update). In this case you should launch the ADB command
Code:
adb shell top
which returns the CPU usage of your phone (make sure, of course, the phone is connected to your computer and has USB debugging enabled). This might give you an idea of anything strange going on and allow you to act accordingly. Or you could go for a hard reset like I did, which is a nice overkill solution and grants that you carry over no unwanted issues from Oreo - and it also recovered some SOT for me.
No adaptive brightness fade effect
I experienced this myself: the screen goes from 0 to 100 brightness in a millisecond and you're blinded forever, never to see your loved ones' faces again. This might possibly be an issue with the personal settings brought over from Oreo. In my case, I solved it to a degree by playing with the bar a bit, and it was solved completely with a hard reset. I think the fade effect is a bit faster in Pie anyway, so there is a degree of difference you should not worry about.
App notifications not disappearing
Notifications for some apps tend not to disappear when you swipe over them. For instance, this is true with the "HDR processing" progress bar of the PixelCamera mod (or better yet, in some versions of it). No fix for now, you just have to force quit the app and hope it is made compatible soon.
UI and Animation glitches
As with all first releases, this one is not perfect yet. I've personally encountered some animation glitches with the reception of nested notifications (especially in the lock screen), non-standard DPI settings, app-switch animations, volume control when writing on your keyboard, and minor stuff of the sort. While most of these are system-related and will have to be fixed in next releases, for in-app glitches make sure they are correctly updated and compatible with Pie; you could also try deleting cache/data, uninstalling and reinstalling them.
In particular, some report an issue where the bottom part of the touchscreen stops working after prolonged inactivity, regardless of the navbar settings. @k3dar7 suggests using XDA Navigation Gestures (no root).
Digital Wellbeing
Yes, this is not compatible with Nokia 7 Plus yet, despite it being in DP4 (iirc), the feature is still unavailable although installed on the phone and already collecting data, and can be enabled by subscribing to the beta program (thank you @divvykev). Downloading it as an app from Play Store won't be possible, but @Redcap56 kindly points out that a working version is available for download at APKMirror.
"Non-issues"
(i.e. things you're probably complaining about but are actually feature-dependant)
- The new gesture-based navigation is not available. It's there, but you have to turn it on under Settings > System > Gestures > Swipe up on Home button
- Mobile data is always active even when on a Wi-Fi. Yes, unlike before it is, but you can turn this feature off in Developer Settings.
- There is a maximum number of possible notification icons before the dreaded "etc. dot" appears. Nothing that can be done, unfortunately. This was decided by Google regardless of not all phones having a notch.
- File Manager is gone. And FilesGo is now there, like the child you never wanted. And most likely you never wanted it because it doesn't allow you to browse folders. The old file manager can still be accessed through the Download app or in System > Storage > Files. If you can't see the internal memory, make sure the option is ticked in the three-dot dropdown menu.
Digital Wellbeing does work!
Installing from apkmirror worked for me: apk/google-inc/digital-wellbeing (I am still not allowed to post url)

Thanks for the heads-up, it works indeed.
By the way, before getting the APKMirror version I had just found out that Digital Wellbeing is actually installed on the phone, just inactive.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vYzZE5zB3LNLAckAUlRMkWoXPMjkD42M/view?usp=sharing
When I updated it with the APKMirror one it could show me statistics from all the past day, which means two things: one, it's already collecting data and it's creepy. Two, it's in a working state as it was in DP, so shall we expect that it becomes activated with the next OTA? (or when marketing-wise it's no longer important to make it Pixel-exclusive?)
If I search on internet, Digital Wellbeing is only available on beta version for Pixel phones on Android Pie only.
I think, when the beta is finished, we have all access to this functionality
Wellbeing is available. I found it be looking for the app in the store but found that it was installed. Signed up for the beta and hey presto....there it is. Can't see it being of any use to man or beast but hey ho.
Am on Pie stable btw.

Thank you.
I checked yesterday and was saying that you need a Pixel phone to install it. Today I just had to join the beta program and voilla!

Thank you, I don't find it useful either but this is good information indeed! Post updated.
I don't see any difference between latest beta and this so called stable one, all the issues persists.
Phone heating is really pain in the a$$, especially while charging (most of the time, not always though). I have seen "Temp High, Stop Charging" notification 3 times in a row now.
I have some issues with displaying apps since Pie. For example, when I'm playing music with Youtube Music and Maps has a picture-in-picture overlay the YouTube music app will flicker heavily and the album art won't be visible anymore.
Same for the normal YouTube app and SwiftKey.
Anyone else experiences this?

In Snapchat messages, the screen can flicker so much it's unusable. It's usually cause by putting the cursor before an already typed word.

High temperature while charging is very, very bad. If you can't solve this, I'd suggest you go back to Oreo before the battery is ruined.
In any case: did you update directly from DP? Did you check for strange processes via ADB? If you haven't done it, a hard reset can be very helpful as well.

Not with the same apps, but I experience this as well. Only advice I can give is to try what you can for single apps (i.e. clear cache/data, uninstall, reinstall) but you probably did that already. If it isn't solved this way, only the next OTA (and/or the next app update) will solve it.
But yeah, this is definitely a thing. I have heavy flicker in some setup wizards for Google apps (most notably Lens) and the volume control will flicker at all times if shown while typing on the keyboard.

Yes, updated directly from DP. I have done factory reset, Hard reset is necessary?

Actually that should suffice AFAIK. If I were you, I'd try downgrading to a stable Oreo and updating from there. I'm really not sure about it, but probably some bad code is brought over from the beta? But that temperature is definitely not normal, especially if you already did a factory reset.

Maybe some app is behaving inapppropriately. I have done Hard Reset and will see if the problem still persists, else I will degrade.

Not sure if you did that already, but the adb command I wrote in the first post can be useful to check that. Good luck anyway!
The stable pie update is a full rom, not an incremental update, so it doesn't matter from which version you are upgrading, after a reset, no trace of the old operating system remains
I might be wrong but I think the issue with the screen on time not lasting as long as it did in oreo in one of the updates they decreased the speed the battery charges or the curve it charges at, I can't remember where it was mentioned but there were issues and they said it will be addressed in pie, this could be related to the battery getting hot while charging as mentioned by @valexbast .I personally haven't had this issue with screen on time being less but I use my old Samsung charger 2Amp 5V most of the time.
I am having (albiet minor) bugs when adjusting the display density and font size both to their smallest. The lock screen pin entry sticks to the left side of the screen, and notifications & quick settings change themselves randomly to the wrong density and back again. Nokia support refuses to acknowledge these bugs exist but I have seen a few people around the web with similar issues. I did not have any of these issues on DP4 which is interesting!

While helpful, I noticed that Nokia support is often instructed to "pacify" the user and assure them everything is normal. But I guess they're taking notes. I haven't tried changing display/font size but the bugs you describe should be easy enough to fix in the next update.
I don't think any of this is app-related anyway, even when we're talking notifications from certain apps. So here's to waiting.
Edit: by the way, I'm a long-time lurker and only newish user so I'm really not a veteran, but hey... welcome to XDA!

Preventing/Stalling System Updates

So last night, I must have received the TMob version of OOS 9.5.6, and it caused my entire phone reboot overnight. Unfortunately, this also prevented my alarm clock from going off in the morning! I definitely cannot have that happen again. I'd like to install the updates on my own schedule.
However, when I got into system update options, there's no setting to disable this? In developer options, there's a setting to disable automatic installation upon reboot, but that doesn't sound like the same thing. I've never encountered something like this, as every phone I've owned before this always allowed you to control how updates were received. Any clues?
Only thing I can think of is the first toggle in the screenshot I've attached.

Yep, that's the one I toggled. It sounds like it only prevents the installation upon reboot, and not something to actually stop it from rebooting. I'm unsure.
I believe that it will not download and update the phone until you go in to software updates and tap the download and update button.

It was like that on 6t as well. TMobile force installs even if you turn off automatic updates.
Alot of people were reporting using the phone then out of nowhere random reboot then "congratulations your software has been updated to whatever"

This is a major dealbreaker for me. I merely wanted the TMob version so that I could use the HD calling without issue, but I can't just have automatic updates going off when they feel like it.
I will have to convert to global version. Good thing I'm like a 20 year customer and the phone is completely paid for.
