Goodbye locked phones, hello Nexus 6

Even with safestrap a locked phone is still locked....and development has suffered. On Wednesday the Nexus 6 comes out and it will have an unlocked bootloader....just have to pay full price most likely. I know I could have done this with the Samsung Dev edition but I won't give Samsung more money for a dev phone when I have already bought one, what bull ****. I know it isn't Samsung's fault but I don't give a ****, It's your phone, they didn't lock it you did! They told you to and you did. You could have said no. Do you think for a minute Verizon wouldn't of caved in and said ok leave it unlocked? What do you think a Verizon store would look like without a Galaxy Tab, Note, or S5? What do you think a Ford dealership would look like without the F150?
The GS5 has been an eye opener for me and it's sad to say that as of the day my Nexus arrives I'll be done with all of Samsung's phones. What a shame Samsung. I know I'm just *****ing but it's sad that a phone as bad ass as the GS5 is and I can't even flash a kernel on it....Not even real CM.

So you bought a non-dev device, and are upset because it's locked? And Motorola has been bootloader locking their phones for a long time too, guess they shouldn't have either. Unless you buy a specifically unlocked version, I suspect it'll be the same story on the Nexus as the S5, Carrier locked.

Motorola started locking bootloaders, years ago and anyone that had an X2 (like myself) will look twice at buying a Motorola product. I'm happy with my S5, great battery and great performance.

I'm not buying it from a carrier it's supposed to be unlocked. I'm buying it directly from the play store tomorrow. I don't think Google will lock their phone. Verizon won't have a ****ing chance to lock it as they won't have no ****ing part in the sale.
They made it to where ONE phone will work on all major networks in America out of the box. I'm glad so I don't need Verizon to OK it or anything. Plug in my sim and go hard.

But will that work? everything i've read about it points to no. If you want it to work on verizon you will need the verizon branded n6?

lol. that's incorrect. The phone has all of Verizon's bands build in. Verizon don't own the bands it's an open standard. do your homework better. I can take a sprint phone and put it on Verizon it doesn't matter at all. Just so happenes Google made this phone to include all bands and networks in the USA. So what exactly have to read that points to no? How about reading the actual phone description on google play.

No need to be a douche.. I'm just asking because I've seen this being discussed across forums. I understand it has all the correct bands. It's just something I'd like to concretely know before I pre order one from Google play. Not to mention none of this has even been confirmed. Sorry to bother you all mighty phone wizard

Very sorry for how i came across. I will let you know if the bootloader is unlocked. As for it working on Verizon it absolutely will work out of the box with the correct sim

I'm just concerned about them activating it, with Verizon being CDMA and only using SIM's for LTE im afraid they wont activate it without being Verizon branded like they do with any phone. If they were GSM this wouldn't be an issue what-so-ever. Boot loader should be unlocked as in usual nexus fashion.

They do not have to activate it. Before the days of sim cards in cdma phones they did have activate it. Now the sim does.

Hello NOT being waterproof (water resistant), Hello anyone can install a themer, Hello every other phone gets updates later than the Nexus.
I'm not saying your points aren't valid, they're just not going to make me switch!

I can't wait to get my nexus 6. Of course the bootloader will be unlocked. It is a nexus device. It is meant for developers. If you want custom roms, a nexus device is the best way to go. I loved my galaxy nexus and then switched to the s3 and now the s5. They are great phones but I want the flexibility of the nexus 6. Also have you seen the specs for this nexus? Top notch stuff finally in a nexus phone. In all it comes down to preference but I'm selling my s5 and getting the nexus 6.

So... why not just take this conversation to the correct forum? Why must we always start cluttering up threads with posts that have nothing to do with the device specific forum?

why did you come in here and clutter our thread up? This thread is about going from the GS5 to the Nexus 6, not about what forum you think this should be in. please shoresteve626 stay on topic.

I guess you can say that I'm also tired of having to scroll through all of the BS "I hate my phone" posts.... there are generic forums that aren't device specific. Not to mention that duplicate threads used to be frowned upon. (Already a device comparison thread under general. That's all. I'll take your advice though....

Pixel 2 e-sim question

I'm looking to buy a new Pixel 2 XL when it comes out. Researching the handset I found that it uses a new SIM, e-sim. Originally I thought it was a smaller SIM, however it looks like it's now a tiny chip permanently on the phones board.
I thought that this would act as a normal SIM, just unable to remove it from phone. However before spending money on the phone I wanted to confirm it would work OK on my network.
I'm currently with Sky Mobile in the UK and I asked them if they will support the e-sim and they were pretty vague and unsure if they would support it. Called a second person and got the same non-committal answer.
Anyone here know if it will work?

it may come different internationally, in the US a lot of networks didn't use sims while the UK and the rest of the world that uses GSM always has, this is only changing in america now that 4G is common as it is a GSM standard so requires a sim.
so I wouldn't worry about it yet, Google still hasn't officially announced the phones and on nearly every phone the US and international versions are different as outside of the US we use a lot more bands.
so basically wait for the official announcement as it wouldn't be anywhere close to the first time a US phone has had no actual sim while the international version have and it seems more likely this is geared towards keeping the US away for actually needing to start using sims in every device since their networks are a lot more tied down.
the non committal answer is likely due to the fact the phone hasn't been announced so the likes of EE who will actually stock it won't be allowed to answer if they have been pre briefed, while the other networks who wont stock the phone likely wont have any information until after the phone is announced and they start asking google.

It just occurred to me that the esim is going to suck for traveling abroad

Now we would just pop out our sim and put it in a different phone. How does the E-sim work? Once our numbers are on them I guess the nano/micro sims we have now are trash?

do you have a pixel xl, I guess if it was really important to you a pixel xl is still an amazing phone. I just got mine 2 months ago for around $500 on ebay brand new. Man it's such a sick phone. I really love it. Of course I want the new one but am really happy.
Hopefully the esim is just as easy to switch, would be nice if there was a tool where we could program it.

It will probably be like older CDMA phones. You will have to deactivate the phone and e-sim first before you can switch carriers. Once it is deactivated you will just have to give your carrier the IMEI and ICCID. Kind of a pain and you will lose your number due to deactivation unless you have a temporary phone to swap to but there should be no more missing sim card errors!

I had the regular Pixel. Sold it. Am playing with the Essential (it's not as bad as all these reviews). So I guess if I get the new Pixel 2 XL, I won't be able to swap sims back and forth?

Prediction: e-SIM won't be easy to switch, and older plans (e.g., Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plans) won't be permitted on the e-SIM as being "not compatible".
Just another means for carriers to take away control from end users. C'est la vie!

Definitely not keen on the idea of not being able to swap my sim from phone to phone. The few times I'd need to switch are usually emergency situations. I hope this rumor is wrong.

Man, lmgtfy really stepped up their game. I haven't seen their results in probably a year or more. It used to be dripping with passive aggressiveness but now it's a deluge!

from my understanding the "SIM chip" is already in the phone and using serials and such I'm guessing there will be some black magic at the network end where they can push the SIM data to the chip on the phone, it may even end up like some of the older phones (more heard of it on the Apple side) where you actually have to go into the networks shop and have them activate the handset, either way I can see this being short lived as most of the world has used SIM cards since time began, so in these countries it will likely put a lot of people off if they have to keep dealing with the networks more so than they do now to get the network lock removed down the line.

Here in Germany you get a paper with a qr code. Just scan it and everything else happens automatically.

I hope everyone saw the announcement today, but if you haven't yet, the esim is for project Fi only. It will still have a sim tray for other carriers.

That's awesome. Man I just got my pixel XL like not even two months ago. They are pretty generous with the trade in offering $410. But I just can't figure out if it's worth it. Are allot of you guys moving from but first pixel XL to pixel XL 2

Seriously what is the advantage of T-mobile vs Unlocked?

I have an S20U now that is unlocked. What I love is that I get the updates faster it seems (although, the S20 has had way more updates than normal). I am thinking of getting the branded Tmobile one, I have never had any issues using their software and it seems to work better on the network. I do not honestly care about "bloatware" as I will at least be getting a 256GB model.
Anyone have any experiences either way?

I don't have any experience with TMO specifically, but what I do know is that typically the carrier branded devices get their updates WAY fast and more often than the Unlocked ones. I'm in the same boat, I don't really care much one way or another about the bloat. If I don't like it I uninstall it if I can or at the very least disable it

It is my understanding that the unlocked one can be used in any country and any network. Just switch sim card and you are done. The TMobile one, may be locked until you pay off the device. You also don't get the bloatware with unlocked (one less thing to Uninstall if you don't care for it).

There are 2 "Kinds" of Unlocked, you're referring to SIM unlocked, the other is the U1 devices sold by Samsung. Which I suspect what the OP is referring to

That used to be true, but not for the last couple of years. The unlocked US Note10+ (N975U1), for example, has gone through 18 software releases in the 12 months it's been out. Many of its updates came out within the first few days of the month, and included that month's Android security patch.
T-Mobile has been lagging for the past few months in its updates for both the N975U and the N975U1, but you can manually download and flash the latest unlocked software immediately.

Also, it is my understanding that Tmobile tweaks it's cellular radio's to perform slightly better than the unlocked version of any phone used on it's network.

From my experience, AT&T, the branded phones have the extras like wifi calling and VoLTE enabled and the unlocked ones don't. Some of the video call features are missing. I wouldn't have a problem with the bloatware but AT&T seems to force it back on and there is no way to remove it without root (which i don't do anymore). This has been my experience from Note 5 , 2 of the 7's ,note 8 and the note 9 I currently use, all have been unlocked.

Unlock has free caller ID builtin, Tmobile you have to pay for it. Unlock has no Tmobile branding or bloatware. Unlock version is easier to bypass tmobile hotspot apn, and usage limits
T-Mobile version has video calling on the phone app, unlock use to, but not anymore. There might be a few more things but I can't remember right now.

Are you referring to the APN settings, or to something else?

This simply isn't true with the Samsung phones. I have had both and there definitely is no difference in connectivity in either data or calls between unlocked and carrier version.

agree - that was a bunch of talk on this forum last year when the note 10+ was shipping . lots of cats on here were trying to say this and it was just not true. i had 3 unlocked phones on tmo and service was consistent.

I think he's referring to carrier aggregation. I don't know if it's a thing licked phones have that unlocked don't. I always go unlocked (so the phone feels like it's mine, lol) and can't say I've noticed a difference.

Thank you for your post. Does the Wifi Calling on Tmobile work on the Unlocked phone? I am looking at buying the unlocked 512gb model but have to have wifi calling when I am traveling internationally.

Does anyone know if the stock firmware can be flashed on any device if it's factory unlocked? I think the answer is yes, but just want to make sure before I purchase one used. I know your can flash the carrier firmware so I assume you can do the reverse.

Yes. and if you follow a few of the guides here you can "unlock" video calling and RCS in Samsung messages as well. And if you are really creative, there is another guide to expanding bands and tweaking receiving antennas
And the last question, if you buy the U1 unlocked, you can flash carrier firmware or unlocked firmware either way all you want, but keep in mind going from u to u1 firmware requires a wipe.
The old "unlocked" was slower to get updates is only true if you wait for Tmobile to release it. If you use Frija and Odin, you can pretty much get it the same day Samsung releases it. I'm too impatient to wait for Tmobile to "get around to" reviewing it and re-releasing what Samsung released weeks before.
Most of the "negatives" of having unlocked are long gone at this point and it tilts more into the positives.

U and U1 have the same radios in them, they are made specifically for the USA market. Depending on what carrier sim card you insert those bands for said USA carrier will be made available for the user. No need to expand bands. The technical specifications of the U1 and U models are listed on samsung USA website for cross referencing.

Anyone successfully using call recording feature on either version? Still looking for my U.S t-mobile variant..

T-Mo non-unlocked Samsung phones (maybe just the Note 20 Ultra though since I haven't been with Samsung since the Note 3 lol) have a bunch of issues. They're about one month behind on updates when compared to all of the other companies. Additionally, I saw someone mention that they have better mobile data quality. That is also true... I found that out once I manually switched to the Android 11 beta as my 5G speeds went from a constant 130mb/s down to 0.5 - 2mb/s without the firmware being specifically from T-Mo. In my settings, all of the mobile connection stuff is exactly the same as it was before...
Also, I don't have voicemail support. Yet another T-Mo problem (but you can easily add Samsung as a possible cause of that problem too)... Had to switch back to the Google Phone app just so that I could get old-school style voicemail (where you have to call your own phone number to get in).

This hasn't worked for me either. It's starting to seem like Samsung pushed some of their development onto the phone carriers now lol.
Hey Samsung, why not just leave Android alone when you get it from Google so you don't have to cause so many problems with your own, customized (ad filled, feature removing) version moving forward? Heck, I've already had some problems with a bunch of your apps and have gotten zero help or answers from you guys. That's the reason I've switched back to a bunch of Google apps, however, half of those didn't even work on this phone!!! But I messaged Google about these problems as well, and you know what? They fixed ALL OF THEM within two weeks.
I'll definitely be buying from a different manufacturer moving forward. Even more so since there's rumours spreading around online right now that the Note 20 was the last Note phone to be released since the upcoming S21 is going to have stylus support...

The difference between unlocked and t-mobile is that unlocked gets its updates directly from Samsung and is not branded.
While t-mobile version is branded and you receive the updates from t-mobile and not from Samsung. So delay or longer waiting time on updates would happen and maybe even won't get few of the updates.
Since t-mobile has to release them, which take longer time.

I've read through the various threads but I don't see my basic question answered: if I buy the T-mobile US version 8T (direct from OnePlus) can I make it like the unlocked international version? I have flashed ROMS before, tinkered with modem files, etc. but I don't want to go to far down that rabbit hole. I really just want the unlocked version from OnePlus but they are out of stock. I want to be able to use this phone outside of the US with local carriers, and want 2 sim slots.
I'm in this situation because I just smashed my unlocked international version 7 Pro and have a few months left on Mint Mobile in the US, and would like to continue with them anyway. Alternatively, I could get a refurbished 7 Pro from Amazon for around the same price. Advice?

I am on same situation but as I understand getting T-mobile version is not good idea there is no good method to switch it global firmware it has a lot of issues. I clicked notify me button in Oneplus website and hope they will get it back stock soon.

I just noticed an eBay listing that describes the SIM unlock as a very simple process. This seem to contradict what I read in a thread on here about having to be on the T-Mobile network for some length of time, etc.
Here's the listing and they claim you can SIM unlock the T-mobile variant by the simple process quoted below. Is this true?
How to Unlock (Network unlock) this Mobile:
· Connect you phone to WIFI
· Go to Settings
· Go to WIFI & Network
· Go to SIM & Network Setting
· Go to Network Unlock.
· Click and then go to Permanent Unlock.
· It will take some time and will give you confirmation message.
· Sometimes Unlocking Server is Busy or there is some connection problem, then try again.
· It will give you confirmation message once Unlocking is done.
· Restart the devise

Yes, that's what I want to know too! The process says, "connect to wi-fi"... so... maybe??

When I called oneplus support they told me it need to be used with t-mobile line at least 40 days than can unlock. But not sure if they are right. We need someone who is in US and can get it and test at least if it will not work can return back.

You could try contacting fcc since you would buy the phone out right and not owe on it I had to do that for my n10 I was supposed to have phone on service for 6 months I think but got it unlocked within a week from when I contacted fcc

But from another side we pay full price in oneplus store so T-mobile should unlock it right away. Because this is not contract phone with payments.

I purchased a T-Mobile 8T from OnePlus and it arrived about a week ago. I used the phone for a few days while I attempted to get T-Mobile to unlock the device. I went through 3 call center reps and one in-store rep, and all of them said that because I purchased the device from OnePlus and not from T-Mobile directly, that they do not have any record of the IMEI being in their system and that there is nothing they can do to unlock it. They told me to contact OnePlus to get it unlocked, who then told me that T-Mobile is the only one who can unlock the device and that it will take 45 days before T-Mobile will be able to do so.
Returning the device today. It's a shame, because I really do like the device (despite the fact that the camera is significantly worse than my 3T).

Any chance you can try or have tried the process suggested by the eBay vendor? (in post #4 in this thread)?

Yes I tried this many times over the last few days, did not work for me. The result says the device is not eligible for unlock, then below returns a server error.

Sorry to hear that. But I'm glad to hear your experience because I was about to buy directly from OnePlus since I have a $30 off coupon, which brings the price down to $320 at the moment.
The eBay vendor insists that their process works and will accept a return if not... I wonder if there's any reason that a phone from that vendor would work, but a phone from OnePlus directly would not...?

I think it will work only if you do it right out of the box without putting in T-Mobile sim card.

If the eBay vendor has opened and activated the device with a T-Mobile SIM card for >40 days, it may actually work in that case, I'm not sure. It could also depend on whether the eBay vendor bought the device from T-Mobile rather than OnePlus. But this has been my experience with a brand-new device from OnePlus.

Yes, and thanks for sharing your experience. I don't think the eBay vendor has opened the boxes, but they do say that they acquired the phones directly from T-Mobile.

Judging from my conversations with T-Mobile, this matters, because if they were purchased from T-Mobile then they should have the IMEI in their database.

I assume that from the eBay vendor who says their boxes sealed, so logically they never had T-Mobile card inserted. Also I saw some post in oneplus forum that guy used to have unlocked 8T which worked with other carrier when he inserted T-Mobile card phone get locked to T-Mobile.

Also I saw this thread it is about OP 8 but they have same situation.

Question Best Buy Model

Hey all,
I saw that Best Buy has the unlocked P7P model GA03453-US while the Google store version is GE2AE. Is there a difference between the models? I can't find the BB model on Google's or anyone else's site.
Just want to make sure it's had MMW 5G and that 5G will work on AT&T's site.
Would it also be worth buying an open box model in excellent condition and over $100 off?

I wish that they would stop doing these confusing model numbers at stores. The GA03453-US is actually the GE2AE, it's just how Best Buy and other retailers catalog the phone. I bought one on release day and can confirm it's the standard US unlocked GE2AE model and I'm using it with a Boost AT&T network SIM with no issues.

Thanks guys. Just taking a look at the options. I was hoping to find someone that could unlock AT&T's but I'm not really finding anyone reputable that claims they can do it. So I'm thinking Google's offering the best deal with the trade in. I'm looking at getting the 256GB Obsidian.
AT&T's model is listed as the GE2AE if you look for how it's set up. Not sure if any sub-branding.
And I take it I'll actually be able to use AT&T's 5G if I buy out unlocked, correct?

I thought anyone with an at&t model could unlock once you pay the phone off, like t-mobile, but I'm not experienced, I've only bought carrier unlocked phones for the last six years and I had come from Verizon back then.
But it is indeed easiest not to have to deal with the carriers and just buy the factory carrier unlocked model direct from Google, or Best Buy, or other places that offer them.

Yep. We don't have C-band here but my Boost SIM is connected to 5G Nationwide and the phone supports mmWave and C-band.

They'll do that. I just don't want to wait.
Not like I'd bolt to another carrier. We tried T-Mo last summer and that's a fiasco I never want to repeat. Plus AT&T gives me a really good deal with a FAN from work.

Understandable. I had to Google what AT&T FAN is. I didn't know the abbreviation off the top of my head, but Google's search results were actually helpful. I used to use a work discount too with AT&T and before that, one with Verizon. The last four years, give or take, we've just been using AT&T Prepaid, and it's been cheaper than all our previous options and works great for our usage. Every once in a while I look at other options or carriers, but there's nothing enticing enough.
