Using micro sd from android 6.0 on an android 5.1 device. - General Questions and Answers

I am wanting to use my micro SD as the title indicates without formatting and losing all the data. I Would really appreciate anyone who can help.

I'm pretty sure you can insert the same sd card to any device and be able to access it. If anything, backup the information in your sd card first in case anything happens

Move the files from the microSD to PC then after the files are removed, put the microSD in the new device and format it, then after its formatted, move your files from PC to microSD.
If you don't have a PC, put the microSD in another device then move the files from microSD to that devices internal storage then remove the microSD and put it in the new device then format the microSD using that device, then remove the microSD and put it back in the device that you moved the files to and move the files back to microSD then remove it from that device and put it back in the new device, then you'll have all of your data on that device.

sd card

How to i see my sd card on my computer so i can put things onto it? Im rooted and have cmw
It's under "removable" and you will see "microsd." Also, if you end up not being able to mount it, make a partition on your uSD card and that will probably solve the problem..
only thing to show up is the the internal storage. How do i creat a partition?
Ok i found the sd card. Its under device storage. It wont let me put anything on it though
All im wanting to do is put a custom rom on my sd card so i can flash it.
Make sure that your SD card is formatted in a way that your computer can read it. For best compatibility, format it as FAT32. You'll probably need to plug it into a computer in order to do this, which probably defeats the point in trying to do this using the device as a huge SD card reader.
Also, if your card -is not- the microSD card, make sure that it is not ticked to the 'lock' direction. On normal sized SD cards, there is a moveable nub.
Check to see if you can write files to the SD card FROM the Transformer. If you can, the alternative is to download the rom file to your Transformer, and then put it on the SD card from there.
Bumping your thread/making multiple subsequent posts won't make it so that you receive assistance quicker. If anything, it will make people ignore you because You are a Noob. You hate yourself(azrienoch, YouTube, 2011).
i can see it fine on the transformer. Could it be something wrong with cmw. How do i reformat it.
Plug your SD card into the computer, and use your disk management software that ships with your computer. If you're on Mac OS X, use Disk Utility. If you're on Linux, use cfdisk or fdisk.
On my machine(windows xp), if in windows explorer I click on
Transformer TF101 - Portable Media Player,
I get two different options
Internal Storage or Micro SD
This was after an update to the ASUS sync software though.
Originally I could only see the MicroSD was through
Internal Storage->MicroSD
When accessed through the tranformer, this is not writable. This is a limitation of sd cards. You can't have two hosts with write access.
The other way is to put it in internal storage, then use the transformer's File manager and copy from the SDcard, and move it to /Removable/MicroSD
Ok the sync program i downloaded is not in english. Its the one fromthewebsite too
Can you clarify if it is a SDCard(in the dock), or a microSD card(in the tablet)?
You can't see the dock storage from a pc, I believe. I also think you can't install roms from the dock.
Sorry i probably didnt know what the dock meant then.
It is in my tablet. I plug it into the computer. If i go to computer and look at it it says. Asus Transformer tf101. Click on it again and it says device storage and thats it. Its like it cant see my sd card at all. Is there a way to go into usb mode or something so my pc can see it? Also on my sd card all it says is lost. something. Shouldnt there be more since i rooted it. I got su functions
I think that you should be able to see it through internal storage, either Removable folder, or microsd folder.
If not, just copy it to the internal memory, and cut/paste it through the transformer file manager

[Q] Damaged SD card storage

Hello,
My Desire S is running on rom BlindMIUI_v2.5.25 which I loaded June 5th of this month. Suddenly since 3 days back it is saying "Damaged SD card storage" and also saying "Format USB storage, erasing all files stored there, action cannot be reversed"
Please advise should I format SD card? Will this solve the problem. If I format then I will try to save files and then will do it and restore the file again.
What happen is that if I reboot is for few time the SD card comes again and for no reason I disappear without any notice.
Please help me if there is any solution.
Brgds
Looks like It's corrupted. A format should fix it. Connect it to your computer via a memory card reader or mount it in recovery and backup everything to your computer if possible. Then do a full format of the card (uncheck quick format in Windows). After that use the 'format sdcard' option in recovery and then copy the backed up data to the phone.

Hello sashank,
Thanks for so prompt response. See I have just inserted another SD card and now phone does not get any SD card. It says "SD card is not available". From this it seems to me it is rom problem not the SD card. Am I correct? Should I change the rom and go for a newer version which is MIUI.us-2.6.8 or just a format will do?
Please advise.

Hello darkion,
The phone is giving the option to format it. Should I do the format through phone or is there any other way to do it. Please advise me in details.
Would appreciate your help.
If your phone is giving an option to format it then use it. I find it strange that it didn't detect the other SD card too, but in any case if it's asking you to format it instead of just not detecting it then it doesn't seem like an issue with the card slot. So format it in the phone and see how it goes. Alternatively, go into recovery-wipe and format-format sdcard. I always use this for formatting my card as it works better then formatting it in the ROM itself, especially when my card gets corrupted.

You should not forget to simply clean your sd-card and the slot in your device a little bit. This might be an easy solution, you should at least try it.
Or maybe you've already done .. ?

Hello sashank,
What I did is I formatted it in the PC so as in recovery as you said in the earlier response. The phone give the option but it does not work so I could not formatted it through phone.
It seems like working now. Phone shows there is SD card and through file explorer I can go to SD cards file. But only thing is that when I go to SD card files through file explorer, it take few seconds to retrieve the SD card files which never happened before.
Thanks for all your help.
Ok, when you format it in the PC, if you're using Windows, choose a cluster size of 32k in the format window. It gives a better read and write speed, especially read speed. So the SD card shouldn't take that long to show files. In general you'll see the card is giving faster speeds, both on the phone and when transferring files from the computer.
Also there's another way to increase the read speed of the SD card in the phone, which is by setting a higher read ahead speed. If you want to know more you can search about it, but otherwise just install this app SD Speed Increase, set your read ahead speed to 2048kB and tick 'set on every boot'. You shouldn't feel any SD lags after this. This speed increase is only on the phone though, won't reflect if you're transferring files from a computer. You need to be rooted for this to work.

[Q] Moving contents from microSD card to new SDcard

Hi all,
Im new here.
The 2GB microSD card on my ChaCha is full at the moment with pictures, apps, games etc and I want to move all the contents to a new 8GB card.
How to I go about doing that? Do I manually copy/cut all the contents from the 2Gb microSD card onto the hard-drive on my PC and then move it over to the new microSD card or do I sync everything to my PC using HTC sync then onto the new microSD card?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I have tried the "copy contents to computer hard drive then move it over to the new microSD" method and it seems to work just fine. If you are using links2sd/apps2sd scripts, of course they won't work anymore because the computer won't read the ext partition of sd card. Just keep your old microSD as a backup in case the new sd card causes trouble to your phone
Thanks

I'd use my PC to copy everything. It's the easiest way. Don't know any other way, but guess that it's so easy that no one thought of making a tool for it.

Recovering an "Adopted" SD Card?

Hi folks,
I have an SD card here that I was using for Adopted Storage but I've managed to get it stuck as an "adopted" card and can't seem to get it back functioning as a normal SD card
Long story short... I wiped the device the card was in but I didn't "unadopt" the SD card before hand - as in set it back to portable mode. While the device could recognise there was an SD card afterwards, it couldn't prepare it for use and suggested a card error or something to that effect.
I figured I'd just pop it in my laptop (Windows 10 x64) and re-format it but this didn't work. Failing this, I decided I'd "nuke" it using Minitools Partition Wizard. While this program had better luck identifying the card, could display and delete the partitions on it and could run the Wipe task - it had no effect on the card... the partitions just re-appear after any attempt to nuke them!
Has anyone any ideas about how I can restore this card back to a normal FAT formated SD card?
Just to clarify - I don't care for the data that might be on it... I just want the card back usable
Thanks
Recovering an "Adopted" SD Card?
The best solution for now would be to plug the sd card into a phone with android 6.0 so that the phone can read the card and then while setting it up,you can format the card as "normal "(the part where it asks you whether to use the card as in adaptive storage or for accessing files).

When I try this, I get "Unsupported SanDisk SD card"
I'm then asked to select either Portable or Internal and then Erase & Format but neither work. They fail at 20% and the message "Unsupported SanDisk SD card" is shown again
I'm a bit stumped. I thought surely the encryption used on adopted cards was only to stop external reads. It seems in this case it's stopping me from writing to or formating the card
Running out of options

Need help with transferring date from one microSD card to another?

I'm getting a new microSD card for my SHIELD Tablet. The card I have inside currently is being used as adoptable storage. I want to transfer everything from that card to a new one I'm getting. Is there a simple way to backup everything and just have it auto reinstall or something like this? I don't want to have manually reinstall everything if I don't have to. Also i am not rooted.
Someone mentioned something about cloning SD cards for a raspberry pi, so would this potentially work for a micro SD card?
http://lifehacker.com/how-to-clone-your-raspberry-pi-sd-card-for-super-easy-r-1261113524
if anyone could provide assistance, that would be helpful
I don"t think you can clone adopted sd card. It has two partitions: 1st 16mb(infos, fat32), 2nd rest gb, ext4, encrypted. New sd card has another name & s.n., it will be not recognized.
You can move all apks you can to internal memory, rest of data copy to PC. You can use google backup too.
Set old card as public, eject it and insert new. Set it as adopted and copy data back from PC.
I think you can loose something from the folder /Android.
Without root & twrp backup&restore everything is impossible. @toph the earthbdner
