Pixel 2 Face Recognition to Keep Screen On - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I don't see the option in stock Android, so I'm guessing that other phone manufacturers include it in their versions. I miss the ability to keep my screen on when using/viewing (e.g. facial recognition). Can someone confirm that this feature requires addition of an app? If so, is there a recommended app that does this and is light on resources? Thanks

Hi.
I use gravity for this. I disabled all other features except keeping the screen on when holding the device.
It doesn't use the camera though. It uses the accelerometer to detect if you're holding the device. Quite effective.

GMD Gesture Control (Root) Issues...

I love the GMD apps, including S-Pen Control & Gesture Control. I only use the S-Pen when I am writing or marking up drawings, occasionally when editing pictures, but by far, most of the time I navigate by hand.
I have used Gesture Control on numerous tablets & devices including the Nexus 10, Note 2, Note 10.1 & now the Note 8. It has worked flawlessly for the most part on every device I have used aside from the Note 8.
I have contacted the developer about the issue, which is that the "Back" function fails because the InputDispatcher drops the call. "Back" works fine using GMD S-Pen Control, but not on Gesture Control.
What I am wondering, since I don't see the complaint anywhere else, is if anyone else is using the app & having the same issue.
I have pulled a logcat for the app, so I know it is not a SuperUser issue, but nobody else seems to be reporting the issue, so either it is working for other, or I am the only one using GMD Gesture Control on the Galaxy Note 8.
Anyone else using this app & either having this issue?

Works intermittently, seems to be very dependant on what app is open ie: greader pro, can three finger back from read article to summary list 90% of times but get zero response while on summary page, should return me to desktop but just flashes 'back' indicator but no flash from capacitive buttons and no action occurs.
Terry
I have the same issue. I created a custom gesture of one touch point DL and that almost leads registers. The default three touch swipe down doesn't work so I disabled it the created a customer gesture to do the same thing. It works intermittently. I contacted the developer to let him/her know. I followed the directions as well om the FAQ on his website regarding SuperSU.

I've been having this issue as well.
It's not only the gmd app, but I changed my dpi in build.prop to enable tablet mode when I disabled the capacitive buttons and the back button on the nav bar acts the same way.
Must be a bug in the firmware I guess.

I am seeing the same issue as well. Any response from the developer yet? Should I also reported the issue to the development?
I had the same problem. For me, activating "Evaluate gestures only on release" in "settings" and restarting ("Restart Service") solved the issue.

I just tried the same but no luck. Did restart the service and everything but still experiencing the same intermittent "back gesture not working" issue. It doesn't seem to be dependent on the app being used. I sometimes keep trying and repeating the gesture and sometimes it eventually works. Tried all that superuser and supersu but to no avail.
Hope developer knows how to fix it.
Thanks for the pointer anyway.

Any news on this? Setting the evaluate option seems to improve it a bit, but still more than 50% of my back gestures are not evaluated

display sensitivity

The display on my XZ since the November update is more sensitive than it was before. For instance when in playstore or YouTube, when swiping up it's like the phone will go to a video even though I didn't tap on it. Is it possible to adjust the overall sensitivity of the screen at all? Btw, I have done both a factory reset and via Xperia Companion too, but the issue still remains.
I have this issue also. It's definitely super sensitive. For example, I can use the touchscreen with thick gloves on. With my iPhone I can't do this.

What about the setting for using with gloves...is it turned off? Try turning it on, reboot, then turn it off, reboot. See if that helps.

Screen Off app on Mate 9

I'm contemplating a Mate 9. Is it possible to use a Screen Off application, to quicly turn the screen off, without having to touch any buttons?
Many people ask about unlocking the screen in a prompt manner. When I'm short of time (e.g. changing buses) it's just as important to be able to turn the screen off. On my old Note 3 I'm using a Screen Off app (or is it a widget) on my home screen. With a good non-slippery cover, I'm almost able to turn the phone on and off with a single hand. I'd like something similar on Mate 9.
I use the gesture mode on Nova launcher to screen off

You can use any screen off app.
There is even a widget preinstalled.
The floating dock also lets you lock the screen as well as the built-in widget
thanks, everyone.
It looks good. Now I just need to wait three weeks for the price to drop.
I heard Mate 10 is due to be announced on 16-Oct-2017.
I intend to stay with 9 because I don't like the ultra-thin bezels and I prefer the wider screen over the narrow-elongated forms.

Same here. I use double tap gesture in Nova launcher mapped to open app "screen off and lock". Just like old LG phones. I wish I could get double tap to wake to work I hear it gives a lot of false wakes though.
For the Screen OFF action I firstly tried Nova and Tasker actions, but in the end the best solution by far is to use the Mate 9 built-in Screen Lock feature, triggered with both Nova activity and Tasker Assist Request (home button long-press).
The built-in Screen Lock feature is both more efficient and visually pleasing than third party solutions, and respects the Smart Unlock settings.
For Screen ON the best solutions for me are Gravity Screen app (free from Play Store) and Tasker proximity action if you are bound to that addiction, like me (I can help building that specific task if anyone is interested).

Google Pixel 2 touchscreen issues.

Hi, first of all sorry for my english.
I have a strange problem with the touch in my Pixel 2. Quite often the back button does not work. The other two work flawlessly. Sometimes it happens that I click something on the screen and he does not reggae. Only the second or third pressing causes a touch response. I restored the phone to factory settings, but that does not help. So I decided to check it in emergency mode. In this mode, it seems to me that everything works very well. So it comes out that it's an app. It seems to me that when I entered Safe Mode in the Gboard settings it took once what I described. Is it possible for Gboard to freeze the screen? As for the back button I had the same in the LG V10 where were the buttons on the screen and I also had the same on the HTC 10. In these devices, the touch on the screen was OK. I also checked the screen touch with some apps from Google Play Store, and it also comes out that the touch works 100%. However, in normal mode, the phone can not be used. Did anyone meet with a similar case? Is this software or hardware issue?
Have you looked at https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/experiencing-dropped-tap-inputs-t3692599
If it works properly in safe mode, it's most likely a software issue with some app, as you suggest.
It works properly in safe mode, but i saw two or times in this mode the same issue. It is not so often like in normal mode and i think it happens in Gboard settings.

EMUI quirks and annoyances

I’ve used stock or (virtually stock) Android phones for years. My last properly skinned phone was a Samsung Galaxy s II. So using EMUI on this phone has been interesting. There is a lot that I like, but here I’ll describe a few annoying quirks I’ve noticed, plus any partial-solutions I use. Hopefully this will inform perspective and current P20 owners, but also, if you have a solution to any of these problems, do let me know!
- The settings menu is terrible. They have messed with it so much, and added so many settings, that it is often impossible to find what you’re looking for. The solution is to search, which, thankfully, works well.
- The lock screen wallpaper changes every time you unlock the phone. I feel like an idiot, but I can’t work out how to set my own (single!) wallpaper. There are these collections which you can choose between, and then from the lock screen itself you can favourite wallpapers from the collection (not sure what this does) and pause on a wallpaper from the collection, and it looks like you can add your own collections, but this doesn’t seem to work. There MUST be a work around. All I want is the same wallpaper on my lock and home screen!
- Notification content (including media controls) is always hidden on the lockscreen until you authenticate, regardless of the app setting. This seems to be a bug. Setting up face unlock (and swipe to unlock) at least means you can see your lock screen with notification content when at a face-unlock-friendly angle.
- The double tap vol down to launch camera works fine, except when I’m listening to music, when it just turns down the music. No idea why they don’t give this functionality to the lock button like most OEMs.
- Unlock by voice for Google Assistant doesn’t seem to work. I’ve had this problem on other phones so don’t know if I’d blame Huawei. It responds to ‘OK Google’ from screen off (which is better than my OnePlus) but won’t actually unlock.
- The always on display is a bit weak. It doesn’t even properly show notifications.
Anything to add? What EMUI quirks have you found?
Try this for always on display and notifications

I find the settings menu perfect compared to samsung or other brands.

Just open gallery, open any picture you want, set as background for home- and lockscreen, thats it

I have sometimes problems with starting my spotify automatically when connecting a bluetooth device, I think a sleep mode problem. Another bug is the one with updating widgets. My calendar widget f.e. crashes after a time. found a workaround with "your calendar widget".
But I think all in all its a great phone with great features

You can find this setting in 'Security & privacy' - 'Screen lock & passwords'
=> 'Update covers' to enable and disable it and 'Covers' to choose the pictures to show
EMUI has made me fall back in love with OxygenOS - the way EMUI treats notifications and the lock screen is diabolical. If I unlock my Oneplus 3 but don't read a notification, I can lock it again and the notification remains on the lock screen. The notifications span the whole screen, and work perfectly.
Also, Spotify on OxygenOS uses album cover art as lock screen wallpaper when playing, similar to how EMUI treats the local Music app.
This gonna be a debate for eternity.
People who come from xiaomi or samsung wont feel too awkward with emui,
Different case if you come from AOSP, or Oxygen or LOS.
Best solution is slapping NOVA launcher as soon as you use the phone.
I've used several Huawei phones now, in fact since the Mate 8 they've tended to be my main phones through most of the year (I still try others, but tend to come back for the battery life and cameras, granted the cameras have not been as good as competitors but the camera systems are more fun to me as a person with an amateur interest in photography and I've taken a lot of shots I don't think I could have got from the others). The P8Max was my first, and the UI/OS was a bit of a dogs breakfast - so many things were broken (many due to trying to increase battery longevity) and many other things required complex workarounds beyond installing Nova which I've had on each of them. It's pretty well fine now, but if you're coming from Samsung or others it's very different and will take a bit of time to adjust to - particularly the level of granular control you have on things affecting battery life. Once you get a handle on it you'll probably end up appreciating a lot of what it offers.
Google Assistant works fine but it makes conflict with Huawei voice control (so turn off one of them)
Double tap volume down to launch camera is a great idea but why the hell it does not work when players or different apps are in the background.....
Hi there!
Setting your own lockscreen carousel:
Settings>security & privacy>screen lock & passwords>magazine unlock>subscriptions>added by me>add>choose image
You can create your own cycle of wallpapers.
In themes App make sure you set me>customize>lock screen style>magazine unlock
I wish adjusting the volume on Bluetooth headphones adjusted the master volume like on all previous phones I've had instead of acting like an in-line control.

Hi how do you get rid of double tap on home screen it's do annoying it's a short cut to access latest apps that have used I have Nova Which is excellent and I'm coming from a Samsung S7 to a P20 pro please help !!
To enable or stop scrolling wallaper just swype from the bottom on the lockscreen and you will see Pause button at the left. if you press that, the scrolling will be disabled and a "play" icon will remain.
I've debloating quite a lot from emui.
Installed swap torpedo
Runs faster now and battery lasts longer.
Huawei should offer a vanilla update.
Last time I saw so much bloat was on Samsung.
Unnecessary.
EMUI was one of the reasons I ditched my P10 after 6 months, went back to an iPhone, then to a Nokia 5...
Have any of the roms developed for the P20 done away with EMUI otherwise this device will be another one i'll have to remove from the list of potential upgrades.
Killing foreground apps
Hi, just bought the p20 pro after years with Samsung. I have noticed that it often kills apps that I am currently using, sending me back to the home screen (reminds me of a crash to desktop in windows computers).
After some googling similar problems I adjusted the app auto start and ignore battery optimization settings and it did get better, although it is still killing apps which I presume is using a lot of memory or battery (or both?), for example posting stuff on Instagram (Instagram is whitelisted from optimization and managed manually).
This is really bugging me, anyone else with the same problem? I'm running android 8.1.0, EMUI 8.1.0 and memory always stays between 2,5 and 3 GB.

Yeah, it's turning out to be a deal breaker for me.. Too bad since I really like the phone. Just hope it's a bug ?
Something seems to be happening to spotify when it is running in the background using my bluetooth headphones. I get stuttering and odd pauses, its basically unusable.
I have found if I use andriod auto to run spotify or use the wake lock program to keep the phone in a higher power mode it seems to help. If I have the charger plugged in it works fine as well. It appears to be some sort of power saving issue (yes I have told the phone to ignore spotify's power usage) or something to do with bluetooth power saving. But it works fine in a car.
Thats my only real complaint, and had I known I would have this issue I would have probably grabbed a onePlus device. Using Sure 215's
One thing I did notice, and I also fixed the problem quite simply.
I turned the display Resolution to HD from FHD my thinking was with a lower resolution I'd have better battery and better performance.
What I got was worse.
60fps lagged so badly it was unusable.
Transitions especially to the Google feed lagged and was annoying.
Asphalt 9 lagged and was extremely crap.
Turned FHD back on, all went back to silky smoothes??
Logic didn't exactly prevail here but it works.
So in short if you've turned on adaptive resolution or HD.
Turn it off
I'm facing this weird problem with my p20 pro. In. 128 and 131 and 152 firmware versions whenever in have an incoming call my screen doesn't wake up to show my who is calling me, unless I press the power button or the fingerprint sensor. If the call is missed my screen wakes up normally to show me the missed call notification. Any solution?? I have no fingerprint lock or pass code lock. Just swipe.
