Substratum User Experience - prjkt.io

Hello Substratum team,
I had a few comments on the Substratum UX. I've used it for both a rooted Samsung Galaxy S7 as well as a rooted Nexus 6P RR Oreo, with Swift Black and Swift Dark themes.
1) Tapping a theme in the 'Themes' tab shows a full screen popup with "Instructions". The UI doesn't give you the option of dismissing without showing again. This popup becomes quite annoying after you've seen it many times. I rush to hit "Next" every time.
2) Selecting apps in the theme viewer provides the options to: "Build & Enable", "Build & Update", "Disabled selected", "Enable selected", "Change overlay states". I don't really understand the differences between the terminology, so I tend to always go with "Build & Enable" regardless of whether I'm installing fresh or updating. Most of the time, I'm simply trying to update my existing overlays after doing a manual Play Store update.
3) The 'Manager' tab doesn't allow you to easily update your existing overlays, so I never use it. The sort order of several apps appears out of alphabetical, so I'm less trusting of this tab. I'm assuming it has to do with when you have multiple overlays for the same app installed, but it's most likely due to user error.
4) Many areas of the app are quite slow to load, and it's easy to accidentally pull to refresh.
5) There is no easy option to simply update all existing selected overlays. It's cumbersome to update, especially when there are certain apps I never want themed, such as Slack. I have to manually go through the full theme list every time, unless I'm doing it wrong.
6) There is no automatic selection of certain app versions, such as when I have a specific version of Instagram installed. Substratum doesn't preselect the version I have installed, even though the data of version number is visible.
I hope that my comments are in any way helpful. I do enjoy what your team has accomplished, and I will continue to support! :good:

Agree with you on updating existing themes; afaik the correct option is after updating the theme on google play, a total uninstall of a particular theme overlay/reboot/reapply the new updated theme. Definitely seems cumbersome not to just be able to update without uninstalling first.

USA T-Mobile Defy owners - Rom 6.39 OTA update

NOTE: THIS IS AN UNINTENTIONAL DUPLICATION OF THE EARLIER POST.
If you purchased your phone in the last three weeks and from this date onwards (Feb 8), you have the latest 6.39 US rom preinstalled. (Currently being rolled out for older devices through the OTA).
This means that you have a high likelihood of bricking your device if you attempt to flash a non US rom – or possibly any rom.
This is my experience so I decided to post this thread in this section, as a caution.
After a heroic 24 hour effort last week, I gave up on trying to unbrick my last device and this time (last night) decided to take the safer road and see if the updated rom could at least still be rooted….
As mentioned elsewhere, it still can be rooted using superoneclick (run from the pc – instructions in other threads)
I’ve attached the file that worked for me below, and will briefly describe the route I’ve followed this morning to get to a smoothly running, rooted Defy that still runs 2.1 but cleanly bypasses blur and looks and feels good:
• Root using the file below or find it in other threads – there are a few versions to choose from.
• Install Tenfar’s recovery (big thanks!), found elsewhere or attached below. (Again there are a few versions to choose from including a newer version from tenfar but the one attached below worked for me)
• Make a backup using recovery – remembering that it always has to be run from the recovery app and can’t be booted into from a switched off state or battery pull – (power on volume down) This is at the core of the locked boot loader issue - correct me someone if I’m wrong.
Once backed up you can set about downloading app remover/freezers, overclock apps (setcpu) and an alternate launcher – ADW. (Aside from a bunch of other apps that require root and are lotsa fun!)
My approach to the bloatware:
I first tried freezing apps one by one (deleting/removing them will affect your ability to get future OTAs smoothly without restoring the original backup so instead unfreeze them later)
…but froze one too many – bluraccount app and got froze out of the phone interface (Blank screen - not having any way to run the functions/apps or change settings, and a factory wipe/restore or using the stock recovery didn’t fix this by the way) and four hours later found a backdoor to reinstalling recovery and restoring the backup – sweaty work believe me.
(How to: By multi tapping the home button it opened up the internet app – then navigated to a link to the online “appbrain” app and clicked a link there to download directly from the market. This then automatically opened up the market app on the phone which was otherwise unavailable by any other means. Once the market app was opened, I downloaded, installed and immediately clicked to open linda file manager then used it to navigate to the SD card to find the recovery app mentioned above, clicked to reinstall which opened the install dialogue, I then chose to open it because it was already installed and chose to boot into recovery from where I restored the earlier backup - voila! All better)
I decided then to only remove non moto/blur related apps and install ADW free and basically take the blur interface out of the equation while getting a visual upgrade.
While this approach leaves the blur account sync and other blur related apps intact, if you have the updated rom, you’ll know that it’s fast and smooth anyway, making this a workable compromise because the blur interface/launcher is basically the other half of their annoying equation.
I chose not to permanently overclock to protect the phone long term and also preserve battery life, but it does give it an immediate kick!
Once ADW and some free themes are downloaded from the market, it’s accessed by going into any area or menu of the phone, say settings, then clicking the home soft key.
This opens a dialogue asking how you’d like to execute this command, ADW or Home (blur) - click the box saying remember choice (make default) – note the instructions on how to undo this choice later and say goodbye to blur baby!
To access ADW settings – because you’re now looking at a different desktop/home screen (for want of a better term) – click the menu soft key (bottom, far left) and choose ADW settings.
From here you can change all manner of launcher (phone interface) settings:
How many icons around the app drawer button, how fast it opens, making it 3D and transparent (sorry you’re going to have to figure this out for yourself – OK, ADW settings, drawer settings, zoom effect speed 100 – background color – move the alpha slider to the far left then click in the middle of the color wheel) themes, how many rows of apps, auto hiding the task bar, and on and on.
Basically a smooth running visual overhaul to add to the rooted, free to do whatever you want device.
And for those of you who are concerned about still running éclair (2.1) – I’d say that once you’ve basically achieved a 2.3 (gingerbread) visual experience with ADW, have disappeared blur for all intents and purposes, have a device that runs smoothly (and let’s face it it’s a defy) you basically won’t miss the little extra’s that come with froyo and if you really do – just hang in there for the upgrade.
It’s gotta come sometime.
Peace out

Installation
You MUST have a working custom recovery on your Kindle before attempting to install this ROM!
If you do not currently have one, try Hashcode's bootloader + TWRP.
The following instructions will get you to the latest version of Kinology. Note step 0b carefully - it determines whether you are "upgrading" (dirty-flash) or doing a clean install (wiping user data)!
Step 0 - Preparation:
If you are not currently running Kinology or Stock OS with TWRP 2.4.4.0, download Kinology-step0a-boot-7.3.0-twrp-2.4.4.0.zip. This will flash four items: stock 7.3.0 xloader, stock 7.2.3 bootloader, Freedom boot/kernel 7.3.0, and TWRP recovery 2.4.4.0.
If you want to do a clean install, download Kinology-step0b-wipedata.zip. If you want to keep your user apps and their data, do NOT include this file. Flashing this will wipe out EVERYTHING except the internal storage (sdcard). It will, however, move your currently installed apps (but not their data) to the sdcard at Kinology/AppBackup. Don't forget to delete the AppBackup folder to free up some space once you no longer need it.
Step 1 - Amazon OS:
Download Kinology-step1a-amazonos-7.3.1.zip, Kinology-step1b-amazonos-7.3.1.zip, and Kinology-step1c-amazonos-7.3.1.zip.
If you skip to step 4, you will have a stock 7.3.1 OS, unrooted, but with a custom recovery.
Step 2 - Kinology:
Download Kinology-step2-kinology-2.0.1.zip.
If you skip to step 4, you will have the base Amazon OS with all Kinology features, but no Google Framework or Apps.
Step 3 - Google Apps:
Download Kinology-step3-google-20130425.zip.
This step gives you the full Kinology Experience!
Step 4 - Flash:
Transfer all downloaded zip files to your Kindle's storage
Reboot into TWRP Recovery
Choose "Install"
Select the first zip file you downloaded
Choose "Add More Zips"
Select each zip file you downloaded in order and repeat until all files are queued
Swipe to Confirm Flash
Choose "Reboot System"
As this is a deodexed custom ROM, the first boot will take extra time to complete while it regenerates the Dalvik cache.
Additionally, if you did a clean install, please reboot your Kindle the first time you get to the "Choose your language" screen. After a clean install, Kinology needs to do some configuration that can only happen during the second boot. If you did not reboot during setup, don't worry, nothing is permanently broken - just be aware that you may experience FCs or other oddities until you reboot.

Advanced Configuration
There are a few behind-the-scenes boot-time options that can be configured through files located at /sdcard/Kinology.
OTA updates:
The packages used for OTA updates can be enabled or disabled at boot time. Just rename the file to either "ota-disable" or "ota-enable" and reboot your Kindle. It is, of course, highly recommended to leave OTA disabled, as an Amazon-triggered updated would wipe out most, if not all, of Kinology from your device.
ADB root access:
By default, ADB uses the 'root' account, and then immediately drops to the 'shell' account. This custom ROM injects a version of adbd that does not drop to the shell account. To change this behavior, rename the file to either "adbd-root" or "adbd-shell" and reboot your Kindle.
Automatic ZipAlign:
This behavior can be changed by renaming the file to either "za-enable" or "za-disable".

Known Issues
The Recents dialog doesn't accept touches when launched from a full-screen app. The workaround is to pull down the notification window first, then long-press the home icon.
So far, I have been unsuccessful at finding a fix for this.
Updating the Amazon Mobile (Tablet) app from the Play Store will cause the "Shop" link on Amazon's Launcher to stop working. There is no workaround - despite being marked as an update, these two apps are not equivalent. If you do accidentally update the app, just use Google Play Store to uninstall the update and everything will return to normal.
This cannot be fixed due to the two apps sharing the same Android identifier.
If no accounts have been added yet, the Accounts & Sync page is completely blank. Just press the menu button to add an account.
While awkward, this is the intended behavior.
If the first Google account is added by launching Play Store, you may need to wipe Play Store's data before the "My Apps" page will work properly. The workaround is to add your account through Account & Sync settings, or by launching Gmail or Talk instead.
This will not be fixed, as it seems to be a bug in the Play Store / Google Framework interaction.
The Amazon Accessibility options override the advanced options. For example, if you enable LockerPro in the advanced options, then change the Voice Guide setting from the main options, LockerPro will become disabled.
This will not be "fixed." The Amazon options are left available so that the accessibility options can easily be reset to an Amazon standard configuration.
If an app attempts to launch Accessibility options, it will FC (the intent listener is missing from Settings). You will simply need to go to Advanced Settings in Accessibility and enable the service in question manually.
Still investigating fixes for this.
Amazon's Keyboard options handling is absurd. For english users, "English (US)" is AOSP and "English (United States)" is Swype (similar for UK). For other languages you'll probably need to try the available options to figure out which is which - the order seems to be somewhat random.
I may look into changing the keyboard selector, but it is not a high priority.
Voice/Video chat functionality in Google+ Hangouts and Google Talk does not work. Attempting to use it may cause your Kindle to become unstable until rebooted (something wreaks havoc with the audio system).
This cannot currently be fixed. Someone out there please prove me wrong!
If there are lots of notifications, the icons will overlap the clock.
I don't intend to fix this, as the effort involved just isn't worth it. It's also fairly common to encounter this bug in any Android ROM that uses a centered clock.
Facelock does not work with a PIN set. It does, however, work correctly if you use a Pattern instead.
This is probably fixable, I just need to track down where exactly in the code the PIN is overriding Facelock.
Change Log
2.0.1 - 2013/04/20:
Updated the base OS to 7.3.1.
2.0 - Not publicly released:
Updated the base OS to 7.3.0.
Host file ad-blocking is no longer enabled by default. If you want this, enable it in the AdAway app that is now included. If you don't, feel free to uninstall AdAway.
The status bar now shows notification icons instead of the "My Kindle" text.
The lowest four brightness settings are now usable.
The menu button on the Navbar should now be present in all non-Amazon apps. Some apps fail to request it, and it sometimes get confused on its own. This change does add a bit of visual clutter but should prevent all of those "where'd the menu go?" moments. Note that Amazon apps will continue to do whatever they want with the Navbar buttons as they tend to crash if they don't get their way.
App suppression has been removed from Amazon's Launcher (Home). This allows you to launch things like Amazon MP3 or the App Store from their icons instead of from the menus. It also allows you to add them to the favorites window.
The certificate fixing process now only happens during Kinology's install process, so apps won't suddenly stop working if they're using generic certs.
Most recent Amazon apps integrated with the system (includes Kindle Free Time).
Gmail, Google Play, and GmsCore updated to the most recent versions.
Completely overhauled the installation process. Boot/Recovery are also now included.
1.1 - 2013/03/03:
Modified AOSP Keyboard to have a right-side margin so that the keys are no longer under the NavBar in landscape mode
Disabled scrolling cache for smoother scrolling
Disabled standard lockscreen when a secure one is enabled
Modified Bluetooth sharing to receive all file types
Modified hosts file so that BBC iPlayer can function properly
Fixed some missing libs that caused video to not play in Amazon Video app
Fixed UnifiedSearch FC (it may still FC after a fresh install, but will be fixed at the next reboot)
Modified the boot-time OTA disabler to speed up the boot process a tiny bit
Modified the Kinology version display on the About page
Integrated DSPManager from CM9
Integrated latest SuperSu (1.25)
Replaced CalendarProvider with the AOSP version to fix Google calendar corruption at boot
Updated GApps to include FaceLock, Feedback, MediaUploader, and the latest GmsCore
1.0.1 - 2013/02/26:
Added CM9 Keyboard
Added Kinology version, Select Screen Lock, and Advanced Accessiblity settings
1.0 - 2013/02/23:

Installation
You MUST have Hashcode's bootloader on your tablet before attempting to install this ROM!
If you do not currently have Hashcode's bootloader installed, STOP and read the previous line. Kinology does not include a kernel or bootloader as part of the installation. The install scripts rely on you reading the previous line.
In order to reduce the size of downloads for future updates, Kinology is distributed in four parts plus gapps - a total of five parts. You must download all five parts to install the first time (at least if you want the feature set above - technically, gapps are optional). Parts 1 - 4 are not designed to install separately - they must be installed as outlined below. Part five can be installed at any time, but it is recommended to simply include it in the procedure below.
Procedure:
Transfer all five zip files to your Kindle's storage
Reboot into TWRP Recovery
Choose "Install"
Select the part1 zip file
Choose "Add More Zips"
Select the next part zip file
... repeat steps 5 and 6 for each of the zips, in order
Swipe to Confirm Flash
Choose "Reboot System"
As this is a deodexed custom ROM, the first boot will take extra time to complete while it regenerates the Dalvik cache.

What's the link between accessibility and LockerPro?
Edit: I suspect you're looking for the option to disable the built in Kindle lockscreen? If so, I'm afraid I missed that option for version 1.0. I've already added it to the security settings though, and will release a flash patch tomorrow.
Re: [ROM][KFHD7][7.2.3] Kinology 1.0
You need to check LockerPro in accessibility settings in order to get notificstions to the lockscreen. Basically, I want to hamdle notifications and accessibility is used for it (at least in normal ics)

Thanks for the explanation. In LockerPro lite, it currently shows "Service Inactive" under "Accessibility Service" and clicking it causes LockerPro to FC. I'll investigate that and see if there's anything I can do.

Looks like Amazon completely ripped out the normal Accessibility Services configuration in favor of their Voice Guide / Explore By Touch service (which is actually pretty neat). Unfortunately, that means I'll have to try to re-import the normal ICS settings through smali, which will take some time if even successful.
flash went ok

Running great, loving the little touches here and there, and seems much smoother over stock but that might just be placebo. Running governor/io at interactive/noop and battery drain while sleeping seems about the same as stock which is great but really too early to tell.
No complaints here but if I could be so bold, would you include the cyanogenmod keyboard for a future release? I've already taken that liberty with my own but I'm sure many more would appreciate it. All in all I would recommend this to everyone looking to get a bit more from their kindles.
Keep up the awesome work.

What's happening on yours?

[Discussion] Huawei P9 biggest flaws

After using the phone for a month, here are my biggest problems with the device.
1. No Double tap to wake up, or even Raise to wake up. With the fingerprint on the back, and the small power button on the side it's really hard to wake up the phone just to check your notifications.
2. Notifications not working sometimes for some apps. Multiple reports for Viber and other apps even after giving permission to work on the background and show on the lock screen still not working.
3. No notification badge for all apps. Just for couple. As ex iPhone user this is great that some apps have it, but it would be better all apps to support it.
4. Notes doesn't sync with Google account. Big problem. On my iPhone it was so nice that all my notes were showing on the Notes app. Even when I had Galaxy Note 2 and 3 this was available.
5. No Reminders app. Okay they are trying to mimic the iOS experience, how they could forget about Reminders app? Now is so annoying to add a simple reminder. You need to go to Calendars app, make event, from there make it reminder... It's easier to use Google search and add it there by voice. But the tone for Google search is very weak and it's easy to miss the notification.
6. I would like more Themes. The catalog is pretty poor. Especially now for holidays it would be great more themes. And for kids too (Off-topic: Please make Frozen (movie) theme and upload it to the theme store, kids will love it).
7. Right now no Night mode. Hope they will add this with Update.
8. Stock Apps are not uploaded in Google Store. Huawei is still lacking in this area. Most OEMs are uploading all their apps for faster and easier updates. Now we need a new firmware if there is something broken/missing.
9. Huawei keyboard - this is connected to 7. It's outdated and missing a lot emojis. Had to switch to Google keyboard. For some reason Huawei keyboard makes less mistakes when typing and less mistakes when swyping. And instead of those ugly Blobs/robots emojis to change them to iOS/Samsung style. With those blobs most of the time you don't know what they express.. At least this is a big problem for me.
10. I wish the OS would use iOS/Samsung style emoji. Samsung phones see them like the one here on XDA, now even if you get text from iPhone, they show up as blobs.. Really hate this. Even developers are adding iOS style emojis in the android apps - Watsapp, Facebook messenger and others...
11. I don't know how it's called, Huawei assistant that finds your phone or makes calls. Too restricted. Here should be "Add reminder", "Wake up" simple command to wake up the screen. This is a good solution for number 1 from the list here.
12. No way to turn off the Haptic Feedback. This is really annoying! I don't like it, don't want it and not being able to get rid of it is a big problem.
I think this is all I don't like right now. If something comes up I will add it.
So, what about you?
P.S: If you want something or have problem with something please report it with Huawei Product & Technical Support Here.
I can only count 4 issues preventing this phone to be perfect for my needs:
1. Double tap to wake
2. No option to increase vibration
3. No option to hide nav buttons in certain applications
4. Image stabilization

There is image stabilization - Stabilizer from the settings. It will crop a little the frame but works pretty good

1- use "wave to unlock" working very well
2- is it really a problem?
3- you can if you have root
4- software image stabilization is here already

1. Valid (u could root and get xposed)
2. Valid (i think there are xposed modules for this no idea. havent rooted myself)
3. Valid (but u could get nova launcher or sth)
4. No idea about this one, dont personally use notes
5. I think this is a minor problem, nothing major tbh
6. There are plenty of emui themes on the interwebz
7. idk which version you have but I have night mode in mine (non rooted stock). You just go to do not disturb and u can set evening times
8. Valid (but u could root and disable and then use google apps)
9. Keyboard is minor problem. plenty of choices on google play store that blow this crappy stock keyboard out the water i.e. google keyboard, swype, swiftkey (personally i use google)
10. (same as 6)You can get themes for that on xda and interwebz that change icons (if you use huawei home. Also, nova launcher etc. can change icons)
11. I wouldnt use huawei assistant to begin with. But thats your own personal opinion. (google now is way better)
12. Um again, idk what version you have but i can turn off haptic feedback (as in vibrations). Settings -> Sound -> Vibrate on touch.
ofc this is your personal list but rooting or following some of my suggestions could easily fix most of this. Also, in the next nougat update which will prob come around december or the very latest january, i think notifications are fixed. Ofc, they might add more settings as the beta build is beta and things can easily change as long as huawei wants to.

Features of Nougat

Android 7.0 Nougat is rolling out now, starting (as usual) with Nexus devices and eventually moving on to other phones. The new OS is loaded with new features and refinements, each one improving upon the overall Android experience. Some changes, such as bundled notifications, are quite obvious. Then there are the less visible changes, such as a new multitasking shortcut. Follow along as we take a look at what’s new in Google’s latest mobile OS.
Daydreams become screen savers
With Google repurposing Daydream as the namesake for its VR platform, a new name was needed for the previous Daydream feature. That new name is Screen Saver, which makes so much more sense than Daydream did in its previous incarnation. Android screen savers still work in the same fashion as they always have.
Quicker multi-tasking
You can now double-tap the recent apps button to quickly switch between your two most recently used apps. For example, say you’re in Gmail but need to look something up in Chrome to include in an email. You can open Chrome, find and copy a link, then double-tap the recent apps button and your device will switch back to Gmail.
Use two apps at same time
Samsung users have long had access to using apps in a split-screen mode. With Nougat, Google is officially adding support for multi-window support to all Android devices running Android 7.0. To activate multi-window mode, long-press on the recent apps button. Whichever app you’re currently using will go to the top of the screen (on a phone, or to the left on a tablet), with a list of recent apps shown along the bottom. Select the second app you want to use from the list. Drag the divider to resize the app windows, or to maximize either of the active apps.
View two Chrome tabs
It took Apple an entire year to introduce split-screen tab viewing in Safari for iPad users, but Google did it at the same time it introduced multi-window to Android. When using Chrome in multi-window mode, tap on the Menu button and select they super handy option of “Move to other window.” It’s fully acceptable to point and laugh at iOS users if you feel the need.
Drag and drop text, images when in multi-window mode
When using two apps at the same time, you can drag-and-drop text between the two windows. Highlight the text, then long-press on it until the text begins to float. Drag it to a text field in another window, and let go. The same goes for sharing images between two apps, assuming they’ve been updated for the latest of Google’s wares. Magical, right?
Finally, the lock screen gets a wallpaper of its own
It only took way too many years, but the day has finally come: You can now set a wallpaper specific to your home screen, and a different one for your lock screen. The process to accomplish the once unthinkable feat hasn’t changed much—after selecting an image to set as a wallpaper, you’re shown a new prompt to select where the image will live.
Clear all recent apps
Google added a Clear All button to the recent apps list, only it’s a bit hidden. Instead of placing it at the bottom of your screen when viewing your recent apps, you need to scroll to the top of the list where you’ll find the handy Clear All text. Tap on it, and all apps are closed out. When you’ve closed all your recent apps, a new icon is displayed letting you know there are no recent items.
Where did that APK come from?
Android Nougat will now keep track of where an app was installed from. Open Settings then Apps and tap on any listed application. Scroll to the bottom of the page, where you’ll see the source of the app’s installation. For example, if it was installed from the Play Store it will say as much. If it’s something you side loaded, it will state something along the lines of “Installed from Package Installer.”
New installer animation
Speaking of installing applications outside of the Play Store, you’ll find a fancy new installer animation when sideloading an APK. It’s a subtle change that won’t have a dramatic impact on your day-to-day use, but it’s not a bad looking change either. Who doesn’t like seeing the Android bot whenever possible?
Bundled notifications
Have you ever posted something on Facebook, only to have your notification tray blown up with alerts of likes and comments? Me neither, but for those who have you’re going to love bundled notifications. Once an app updates for Android Nougat, it can opt to have all of its notifications bundled into one alert. Slide down on the respective notification to reveal the rest of your alerts for that particular app.
Reply with speed
You can now reply to messages from apps like Facebook Messenger, Hangouts, or Messenger directly from the notification. Of course, this means you can hold a conversation without having to bounce between a messaging app and another app. It’s important to note, this isn’t limited to messaging apps. Twitter apps, for example, could add the ability to reply to mentions
Notification importance setting
You can now set the importance level of an app’s notifications to fit your specific use of that app, including allowing an app to ignore your DND settings. With a long-press on a notification, you can view the current importance level. Tap on More Settings where you can turn off the default automatic setting, and adjust its interruption level. As you move the slider, a brief explanation will detail each alert type.
Data saver
Tired of paying for data overages? When using an Android Nougat device, you can enable Data Saver to restrict specific apps from using data in the background. Under the Data Usage menu, open Data Saver and turn it on. You can then go through a list of apps installed on your device, and enable background data for each one you want. Otherwise, apps will only gain access to a cellular data connection when you’re actively using it.
Quicker quick settings
When swiping from the top of the screen with one finger, you will see a row of quick setting shortcuts just above any pending notifications. Tap on an icon to enable or disable features such as Wi-Fi, open Battery settings, or turn on the Flashlight. It displays the first 5 items in your quick settings, so if you reorder those, you'll change what appears here.
Tiles are so in right now
You can now add multiple Quick Setting options to your device by viewing your Quick Settings panel and tapping Edit. You can still tap on tiles to edit a setting or interact with it. Alternatively, you can still long-press on a tile to disable or enable a feature if applicable. Third-party developers now create apps that live only within a Quick Settings tile.
Easier Settings app navigation
When navigating through the Settings app, now you can quickly hop between various sections using the hamburger menu on the left side of your screen (or by dragging in from the left edge). Settings are broken down into the same categories as the main list, but using the slide-out menu eliminates the need to tap the back button, scroll, then select another setting category.
Suggested settings
When you open the Settings app your device will offer some recommendations for various settings and features you should set up. For example, upon initial setup Settings recommended I set up Screen lock, add en email account, set up “OK Google” commands, and change the wallpaper. Tapping on a suggestion will open the proper settings pane or app. Alternatively, you can tap on the overflow menu to hide an item from the list.
New Emojis
Android Nougat includes the latest and greatest Emoji approved by the powers that be, including bacon! Beyond the latest and greatest emoji baked right in to Android, you’ll also notice Google has reworked most of the emoji included on its mobile devices. Smiley faces now have a more human look and feel to them.
Cancel button for app downloads
Ever start to update or download apps from the Play Store, only to remember you’re on a cellular connection or your battery is about to die? You can now cancel downloads directly from the download notification, instead of having to tap through each item in the Play Store. Slide down the notification, tap cancel and your data bucket is safe.
Keyboard shortcut helper
Using a physical keyboard with a tablet like the Pixel C adds a level of convenience and mobile computing appeal to the tablet. However, learning and remembering each apps’ keyboard shortcuts can be a chore. With Nougat, you can press Search + / to view a list of shortcuts for the app you’re currently using.

[GUIDE][CHROME CANARY]: Move the search bar to the bottom and activate home

Hi everyone,
Those who have been using Canary for a while might have noticed that the snapshot the other day included Google's new interface for Chrome, but shortly after it was deactivated by default in developer builds. This feature used to go by the name of home but now it is an addition to it. Moving the search bar to the bottom may prove very useful for devices with big screens and alike. I currently use it on my OnePlus 2 and while it may not be gigantic, it certainly helps.
Google Home however integrates your favorite links for quick and easy access while searching for new sites as well as a persistent news feed similar to how Google Now works. I never really cared for it but some may like it and it is implemented very well in its current stage. I don't know why Google deactivated this, but I'd imagine that this will be adjusted based off of DPI and aspect ratio in the future since Google Home and moving the search bar are now separate dependencies.
So let's get to it!
1. Open Chrome Canary and type "chrome://flags" (without quotes) into the search bar.
2. Search for "home" in the extension search bar.
3. Enable "Chrome Home." This can be done by selecting default and then choosing enable
4. Now enable "Chrome Home bottom navigation menu item labels"
5. Chrome will now prompt you to restart. Do so, or just restart yourself.
6. Now you have an optimal layout of Chrome
It is to my knowledge that such featured are specific to Chrome Canary so do not complain to me when it doesn't work for other editions.
I've attached screenshots for reference. I'd be more than happy to help people that are having trouble, but I'm not Google so I can't speak for future versions of Canary as it's always changing.
One last thing... There are tons of features offered through Chrome's flags so if I were you, I'd give them a look. I don't believe this stick on a per installation basis unfortunately so you will have to configure it each time you install Canary.
