Hello,
I'm going to sound like a complete noob for asking this question but if someone could clarify for me, it'd be great.
If Wi-Fi and mobile data are both turned on and say you're downloading something, would it eat away from mobile data and Wi-Fi or how does it work?
Could someone please assist. Thanks.
You would need download booster turned on to use both, normally would use WiFi unless no connection

No, without using download booster, if Wi-Fi and mobile data is on and you're using Wi-Fi, can it still eat away from mobile data? Or that if Wi-Fi is turned on, does it block mobile data even if it may be turned on at the same time (show priority to Wi-Fi connection)?

On mine I am only aware of it using mobile data away from WiFi or if it deems the WiFi as an unstable connection to the Internet

I have the Sprint Nexus S 4G, and the only time the hotspot will not share my internet connection is when I have 4G enabled. I thought maybe this was the case for you also.

I have an Ns4G also, does that to me also. Couple times I had to reboot phone cause after I would try to switch back to 3G and use the hotspot and it wouldn't connect. Don't know if it works when paying for hotspot from Sprint though.

I want to know if you can transfer data to/from Android devices through Wi-Fi without a router?
Here's the story:
There is a a SGS2 from which I have to take lots of data and I don't have Wi-Fi network nor can I use Wi-Fi Direct (coz NS doesn't support it) and bluetooth wil be painfully slow. Is there any way out like making an FTP server or something like that?
I don't want to use mobile data.
It's just too puzzling...
Use public wifi hotspot and cloud server like DropBox ?
Or: USB connection to PC?

The thing is that I don't want mobile data to be involved anywhere.
I was just wondering if this can be done somehow by making one phone a server of some kind and the other a client and connect them directly.
I agree there are some other ways like you and other users have mentioned but i just want to try and use it this way.
If it's not possible then I'll just use the old fashioned way.

Wifi does not involve mobile data. You can avoid accidental charges by toggling mobile data off.

Not sure what to call this in the subject line but there are certain site this happens to, not going to name them for privacy issues but let's just say there not illegal or perverted sites by any means. Anywho I go to these sites and no matter what the browser or what the user agent after time the device blocks them from me gaining access. The only fix I've found is a complete wipe and factory reset. I've tried just about everything else I can think of... Wiped cache, dalvik, tried different browsers... I'm running stock 4.1.2 rooted. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You say after time does that mean you connect ok then some time later you lose access .
Is that via WiFi or Mobile Data .

I have that problem when connecting via wifi tether on my phone. I contacted my service provider and they say as my contract doesn't cover me for tethering it will be because I am trying to visit full Web pages instead mobile Web pages and so they limit my usage.
That makes sense in regard to the OP . Connect then connection closed .

Try installing Foxfi :
Create a WiFi Tether using Foxfi on your GN10
Connect a phone / a computer to your GN10 WiFi hotspot
Check connection, you should be properly connected to the Internet
Uninstall Foxfi
Now you should be connected for good

Sorry,I didn't notice.that your GN10 is a wifi version.
I tell you this method because I used to have similar problem but my GN10 is 3G+wifi version.
And I use my GN10 as a Hotspot.
After flashing ARHD 5.1 and up version the wifi tethering messed up.
I can connect to the GN10 wifi tethering but it wouldn't allow me to connect to most website...except google sites (google,youtube,etc..)
The method I told you fix the problem.
So, may be you can try installing foxfi on the phone that you use as a hotspot.
I know I'm jumping the gun here. Because neither the download booster or the hotspot mod have been made for the galaxy S5 yet.
But I was wondering if this possibility is far fetched?? I do a lot of traveling and sometimes hotel wifi will not cut it.

I am far from an expert but I don't think the wifi could operate in AP mode and stil connect to another AP for extra d/l speed.

The reason I thought this would be possible was because of the MiMo(multi-input multi-output) capabilities of the S5. I know there are things that would pose an issue like not being able to be connected to WiFi while creating a hotspot.
But that's what the muti input side is for, taking in WiFi and LTE. It almost makes since to be able to send that combination speed out as hotspot.

It would be more like one ap with two aggregated backbone connections. Possible, yes. Doable on the phone, don't know but if the S5 still turns off wifi when you turn on hotshot that would be the trick.

So MiMo would theoretically allow the wifi chip to setup an AP and also be connected to seperate AP, and 3g/4g, to aggregate data? That would be awesome. I have tried bridging two wifi networks with one wifi card on desktops but have never been able to get more than one connection per wifi chip. Where AP mode would be its own connection.
:fingers crossed: maybe we can...

In theory I believe it should work. I could swear, I am 99% sure of this, that way back in the day you could wifi tether to your phone while it was connected to wifi. Might have been the S1 or S2. I am positive that worked because I remember testing the hotspot once and getting some crazy download speeds. This was when I only had 3G and could barely get 300k. And I was freaking out trying to figure out how it was going so fast. Then I realized the phone was connected to wifi:silly: So MiMo isn't needed for one singular stream. It's basically just doing incoming and outgoing traffic on the same feed. But adding in the LTE should work on MiMo. If LTE had it's own card, does it?, you shouldn't need MiMo either. You would just have to first get the aggregation working which I think somebody got it enabled right? And then disable the wifi from shutting off during hotspot. After that it would work without anything special.
Just wanted to give this thread a bump.
Has anyone heard anything about this idea working?

This is perfectly fine. If your phone is connected to the WiFi Router but cannot access the internet you shall see the [ WiFi Signal + ! ] and you phone will automatically use your Mobile Internet connection [ LTE, H+, H, 3G, E ]. As soon as your phone can reach the internet over WiFi, it will automatically disable Mobile Data and switch to WiFi. The ! mark will disappear. It ensures that the phone is always connected to the internet (if available).
This feature was not in there in KitKat and people would miss mails and notifications when their WiFi router's internet connection failed.

my pleasure. nothing wrong in asking what you don't know
This is really dumb design decision. The average person is going to think something is broken on their phone every time they have mobile data/wifi disabled.
Dumb design, can't agree no more. I am wondering if my cellphone has issues when I saw the exclamation mark on both wifi and mobile network. Is there any way to disable the mark?
! mark = No Internet Access
As said earlier by others in this post, Exclamatory mark plus cell signal means u r not connected to internet via cellular data.
Exclamatory mark plus wifi signal means u r not connected to internet via wifi.
One good thing i noticed is when i m on wifi and while i m signing in to provider's page, cellular data is still on and i am getting whats app and mails as well till wifi is connected to internet. Its kind of useful.
Odd.... I see "!" go away as soon as wifi connects to my router. But if I turn off wifi, my cell "!" is still there and doesn't connect to data. Have a 3 bar signal (can make calls, "PTEL" shows up on cell icon, my provider), but no data (I assume the "!" goes out when data connects). I tried opening a web page but no data. This just started since I flashed L. Flashed "L" radio, no help. Suggestions?
This is really strange. I have a perfectly working WiFi at home, and I regularly download app updates and go through various internet things on my Nexus 5 on Lollipop. However, through out the day, I see the "!" mark on my WiFi icon. It absolutely does not go.
After updating to Lollipop, I had to switch my mobile data off, (Only at home) because of this stupid feature. I had a few app updates (close to 300- 400 MB) and because of the "!" sign, it went on directly to my cellular network and started to download from there. Even though the WiFi was working perfectly fine without any issues on my tab and pc and also on the phone.
Secondly, the cellular network also shows the "!" icon. I stopped the wifi and tried surfing using the cellular network and I was able to surf the net, and through out the whole test, the "!" was still there.
Thirdly, The strangest part is that this happens across the city. I stay in Bangalore, India and across the city I have noticed the "!" mark in my cellular network.
This has also made an impact on my battery.
Any help would be appreciated.
Yep, seems like whatever android is doing to decide if it has an internet connection, it does not work well.
I'm acessing the forum and posting this from my OTA-upgraded Lollipop Nexus 5 while my wifi icon on the status bar has a "!", and I'm not using cellular data.
I suppose if I didn't have my cellular data disabled, it would be trying to use it, as it thinks I can't get to the internet via wifi.
I hate when we have to put up with bugs and bloat introduced by software trying to do nothing more useful than to be "smart" and nicer to lusers. I miss my Symbian.
Windows does something just like this, and randomly shows a "limited connection" warning on the system tray. Some lusers IM me to complain:
- "my" internet is not working...
- yeah? How did you get to this conclusion? Because "mine" is.
- because windows says my internet connection is limited
- hmm... have you actually TRIED to use the connection?
- uhh... ok.
Exclamation point on mobile signal strength icon
Hi,
I tested my Nexus 5 after reading this forum and when I enabled my Wi-Fi, the exclamation point disappeared from the mobile signal strength. During a 2nd test, the Wi-Fi did not activate properly right away and I had an exclamation point on both the mobile icon and the Wi-Fi icon. If I enabled my data plan while the Wi-Fi was disabled, the exclamation point turned off on the mobile icon.
