Hey I bought a used Samsung Galaxy S 4G for $110, and wanted to make android apps.
I know a lot of programming stuff, but it doesn't seem to help me much to fix this phone.
OKAY THE LIST OF PROBLEMS/SYMPTOMS
-Doesn't register SIM cards, doesn't even notice them! I can't use the phone like this.
-Stuck in airplane mode if I put it in, requires factory reset to get out of.
-Back speaker for music doesn't work. Earbuds work.
-MicroUSB port is fine, charges, but usually won't show up on my computers. It gave me a "USB Malfunction" error two of the times.
-IMEI and baseband show up in phone as "Unknown."
-Voodoo lagfix is installed? My buddy said this phone isn't even supported.
WiFi, MicroSD and apps all work, it seems fine otherwise. Factory resets do not fix it! Even the power+volume buttons one, where I find the voodoo lagfix crap.
I bought it from a girl, and I think her derpbag boyfriend maybe flashed Vibrant's firmware or did something wrong to it. I might have been ripped off.
Can anyone help me out? Know what to do? I will appreciate it!
First thing you can do is follow the second link in my signature and flash with bootloaders. Missing IMIE is a problem only ODIA can fix.
How do I do this without my USB port connection option?

You said your USB works... just shows as an error. I give tips on how to help with this situation in the Guide.

YES You were right, I followed your guide and got the phone to do new things.
It asked me for a SIM card and I haven't put mine in, but the IMEI number is BACK and ready. I didn't flash bootloaders yet, but should I still?
The phone's speaker still doesn't work, maybe I can't save that.
I got lucky, I tried plugging it in maybe 10 times I finally got it in download mode, so that's awesome.
Should I flash bootloaders? And what is the next step to possibly fixing the speaker?
I will probably want to root then unlock to use for my AT&T. I won't get a data plan tacked on this way, right?

If you're already on Gingerbread (You can check by going into settings > about phone) then you don't need to flash bootloaders. If you're on Froyo, then yes flash the bootloaders.
If you want to unlock your phone, click on the "SGS4G Unlocker" link in my forum signature. It'll get you your unlock code, which you can use after you insert an AT&T sim into your phone.
I'm not sure whether they'll tack on the data plan, but if AT&T works like T-Mobile, they'll require customer authorization to add any features to your account.
Well hey AWESOME.
I did flash bootloaders, didn't notice any difference.
THEN I went and tried to unlock it, the sdcard could only be read and not read/write from the Terminal emulator.
So I rooted it even though the root checker said it was rooted, and I did somehow have "superuser" already installed.
Now I also unlocked it afterwards, and it's working with my SIM and phone contacts. I sent a text and it's too late to call anyone today, but I'm expecting it to work fine tomorrow.
Your guide was fantastically helpful and easy to follow. Thanks a lot man!
The back speaker doesn't seem to work still, but I'm still counting it as a victory.
I recommended flashing bootloaders as a precautionary measure. Yes - you were already rooted. Glad you are up and running.
Maybe you can try replacing the loudspeaker if you cannot get it to work:

As for the AT&T thing, they can't find out that you are using smart phone since they don't have T-Mobile's list of IMEIs, so they won't automatically charge you with a smartphone plan. Also, if you previously had a 3G data plan with that AT&T SIM card you are good. However, if you don't, you need to turn off packet data and roaming at Settings --> Wireless and Networks --> Mobile Networks.

I have an HTC One X running ICS 4.1.1. I recently moved from AT&T to T-Mobile, and everything is working great except that I cannot enable the mobile hotspot function. When I try to enable it, I get the error "There is a temporary network problem that prevents the establishment of the Mobile Hotspot function"
Everything is provisioned correctly on the T-Mobile side, and the tech mentioned that AT&T disables the hotspot function at the handset level, Is this true, and is there any way to remove this restriction now that I am no longer with AT&T?

Yes this is true, and I don't think there's any way to remove it without root. However, I don't suggest rooting just to be able to tether since you could end up getting into even worse trouble without a proper understanding of what you're doing.

Unfortunately rooting is not an option since I mistakenly let my phone take the OTA update to 4.1.1... Oops.. Do you happen to know how AT&T makes that change on the handset? If I knew the method that they used, I may be able to get AT&T to remove the restriction if I can get the right tech on the phone...

They cannot remove it. It's a file stored on your phone that has been edited. without root access, it cannot be changed.
Need help unlocking my Note 20 Ultra 5G. I'm currently on Verizon and would like to flash the unlocked version so I can use Call & Text on other devices.
Also is there an app that will allow unlimited mobile hotspot if rooted.
Please point me to thread that might have already covered this. Thanks

I'm asking because if that's it, flashing the unlocked f/w after doing the data wipe etc. b-4 the flash won't get you there as your sim card will(VZW) will still call the shots. However, if your query is about rooting, or rather unlocking the bootloader on your handset, not certain thats even possible and just a friendly reminder about a voided samsung warranty and a shiny, expensive paper weight(brick) you'll have as a memory to gaze at should anything go sideways for you?! Just trying to clarify a few things and no harm or punking intended.

Spot on
Thanks for the info. So call& text won't matter due to my sim, even if I buy an unlocked phone?
Not bragging but I'm not worried about bricking the phone, I can get another.
So to answer my other question, can rooting my phone give me unlimited mobile Hotspot with a rooted app? Its been 7 years since I played with firmware, bootloader, rooting, etc....just wanted to know if its still a thing.
That's a good question, I would search whether it can be done for Verizon first before paying for a bootloader unlock or csc change.
I have tmobile and a fully unlocked phone but they still know when I'm tethering or using mobile data. I know there's apps that used to mask that, I don't really care since tmobile doest care but it still shows up on my usage. Verizon always seems to have everything locked down to the point they block things that are fishy.
Start searching if there's a way to fool them first.
You can create a new apn. copy all the settings over to the new one but add ",dun" to apn type. That enables free unlimited untraceable hotspot. I believe you need an unlocked device to create a new apn though.

Correct, as he originally requested , but such a slippery slope, as no real consequences to root , cuz warranty is good thru 2021( best case scenario). Just possible/applicable trade-in values w/Samsung go South so to speak, imo? Swappa looks the other way, I've heard from other sellers, about ROM tinkering.

For what it's, last nite due to insomnia & boredom. I followed your instructions to the punctuation ",dun" and I now have successfully created/device accepted apn in my line-up. I saved with just an addition of a + (see screenshots). Whats more, with the mobile hotspot under the apn + , I now have the availability to include the stronger but shorter ranged 5gg mhz wifi signal setting to pair up with other devices set up to share in my hotspot bounty, if they are so chosen, and gain my favor! lol

Do you know if this will work for my carrier branded U.S T-mobile Note 20 ultra as well? I just got the phone permanently unlocked so I'm wondering if this will apply in my situation. Does it require root as well?

As long as you can create a new APN it will work. I am not rooted but I did purchase it at full price.

In review, if I'm rephrasing your query correctly you own your SM-N986U, $0 owed on it, etc.,and received an unlock code from your carrier...now, you want to root to get the "Full Monty" and unlock the bootloader as well? Close?!

Here you go, cuz...this thread should hook you up...be sure to use Odin Patched 3b, I'm sure he covers all that, as well as the data wipe b-4 hand , etc...
"[Guide]Odin Upgrading / Flashing-N986U to N986U1 & Vice Versa | XDA Developers Forums" https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-odin-upgrading-flashing-n986u-to-n986u1-vice-versa.4182825/
I've been searching all over but can't seem to find a concrete answer.
I have an AT&T branded/firmware Note 20 Ultra that presumably is sim-locked, as I picked it up on a promotion, and am forced to lease it on monthly payments.
I'm not interested in getting it sim-unlocked, and AT&T wouldn't do it anyway because it's still getting paid off.
I want to flash the U1 version of the firmware to get some of the carrier disabled features (i.e. call and text on other devices). I'm willing to risk losing wifi calling/volte etc. My only concern is mucking things up since the phone is still leased and locked to AT&T. I know flashing an unlocked firmware won't unlock the carrier restrictions, but is it even possible to flash if it is still carrier locked? Will the flash get botched, or will AT&T be able to see that I installed an 'unlocked' firmware and revoke the promtional rebates i'm paying, or something?
You can flash U1 on a sim locked U without issue. However if you are specifically looking for call & text on other devices, you should try just installing the apk from apkmirror - which is what i did so i could also keep the carrier features. It did take a factory reset & multiple attempts for linking and unlinking with my S7+ tablet, but it works flawless now.
Wow, that worked. I'm shocked; I guess all the info I could find was outdated. I just installed the latest apk version, enabled it on my phone in settings, and did a single restart. No restores necessary. I will keep in mind that flashing info, but this was all I needed for now. Thank you!!
