Windvine DRM Compatibility? - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

So did OnePlus do the right thing and make it L1 compatible out of the box this time? I'm on a OnePlus 5T and my wife is on the OnePlus 3 and she's ready to upgrade. Getting annoying having YouTube TV in 480p on these two devices...

Source? Proof?
EDIT: From GSMArena's hands on sounds like 720p only which leads me to believe it's L2 not L1.

It has been answered in the AMA, and there are a few screenshots in the OP6 Telegram group

confirmed. OP us once again deceived. supposedly a Flagship Killer. I have to laugh

It has L1 but unlocking the bootloader is downgrading it to L3.

About this we know a friend. Here is a ONE plus 6

Hmm I get that L3 is a 480p cap but I can see a sharper image on YouTube at 480p then selecting 1080p so I don't know what to think about it. My OP5 was the same thing.
I rooted my OP6 10 min after I unboxed it so I didn't look at this before rooting.

relock your bootloader and you'll get back the L1

This has been confirmed in multiple locations, subsequent threads on reddit and OnePlus' forums are being closed because it gets asked so much.
Stock/locked bootloader - L1
Unlocked bootloader - L3
Also, don't pretend this is a OnePlus thing. This is the way things are going, and will be applied to most phones going forward.

Honestly, I've never tried this, can you relock the Bootloader and keep root as long as you have stock recovery? Once I unlock my bootloader I never lock it again until I flash a full stock ROM to resell the phone.
Edit: But locking the damn bootloader will wipe my phone dammit.

So if we unlock bootloader, we cant see videos at 1080p on Youtube? Or we can change the resolution manually? I am confused.

YouTube doesn't have DRM, this is a Netflix /Amazon thing

is that confirmed? Unlock bootloader, install TWRP, install Magisk, relock bootloader = L1 and root?

You can't have root if you relock the bootloader as locking the bootloader will wipe your device totally and therefore you will lose root. You then can't reroot your phone until you unlock the bootloader.

What if you download the content using high download video quality and playback locally? Is it still 480p or is it then 1080P or even 720P?
Edit: I just downloaded Wanted and it does looks crisper/sharper with the movie downloaded compared to streaming it, though it was only 754mb so I think at best it would be 720P

That's still SD.
480p.
I tried many times to download different content on my axon 7, it downloads in SD quality only.
Then I kept searching for an answer and the final answer I got was, there is no way you can pay HD content from netflix on an L3 device.

There are so many easy ways to still watch HD content (even netflix content) on any device ... this blocking is kinda dumb. I get why they are doing it, but once again its not really changing much.
Anytime I hop on a plane I have some content already downloaded (from other places) and ready to watch on mx player ... problem solved for me. For the occasional show, i dont care if its 480p even though phones have pretty big screens nowdays, they are no match for the nice big tv in the living room. If i want better quality, I will watch it on the larger monitor. If your phone is your only screen, then I can understand the concern. In the end though THIS ISNT THE FAULT OF ONEPLUS ... ITS THE CONTENT INDUSTRY.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you lock the bootloader you're wiping the data partition. You're not wiping the recovery partition. Therefore TWRP should still be intact to flash say Magisk for root no?
As for the comments on SD on the go. I'm with you on that one however I want 60 FPS content and that's only 720p60 or 1080p60 with YouTube TV. Need the higher level windvine or I'm stuck on 30 FPS when watching sports on the go. That's the sticking point for me on the DRM thing. I could care less about Netflix. I agree you can acquire your media however you want and download it directly to the device in whatever resolution you want and be content. That's not going to work for me though with live TV.

Anyway, search XperiFix here on xda, but I don't know if it's ready for xz2 family. Oh, it's a paid solution, about 19€.

Due to the lack of pie support of the pay solution at the moment, you can downgrade your phone to OREO, install the solution, take a picture and upgrade your phone to PIE again.
You need newflasher v13 from XDA and the stock Oreo ROM I uploaded in the TWRP thread.
And a downgrade requires factory reset.
Because of the encryption.
Feel free to ask for help.

Go into my TWRP thread and install TWRP and magisk.
Root your phone, backup your apps with Titanium Backup
Downgrade to the Oreo firmware I uploaded there, use xperifix as DRMfix.
Boot into Oreo, use the camera to take one shot.
Upgrade to PIE and reinstall your apps with Titanium Backup.
Titanium Backup and xperifix costs some €/$
Then wait for xperifix PIE release to get your 100% photo quality back.

Would this serve for Motorola G6 Spanish too? And could it be installed in the same way as the soak?
This is not certified on the playstore... I updated it via ADB, but as an official one, I thought it would be certified. My device is not unlocked.
Other than that, I'm glad the audio volume is normal again (compared to the previous soak test).

The soak is an update, so no you don't install this the same way. This is an entire firmware package. Fastboot, or RSDlite.

Did you root? Set magisk hide properly. If you installed the full firmware (fastboot not ADB) Including formatting data, you have to wait a bit to see if it's certified. Until the play store finishes all of it's communication.
Im also seeing device not certified in the play store after flashing this. Also have system integrity compromised when checking for updates. Came from unmodified 8.0 with playstore certified and system intergity was fine.
Downgraded back to 8.0 and call audio is broken and silent.
Gonna go ahead and give this a shot, see if I have any luck with it.

So, I installed last night when I saw this post, have used my phone all day, with no Google Play Services issues, like others seem to have, I DID however notice something really odd, maybe someone has some input? I noticed I had a voicemail, so I went into voicemail to check it, no sound, like, I can't hear anything via the speaker. My sister tried calling, I called her back, she couldn't hear me and I couldn't hear her. Notifications are fine, I can hear those, music playback is fine, I can hear that. It's just when IN A CALL that the speaker seems to not work. Anyone ever encountered this and maybe have some feedback?

It might just be the software issue, as mine also shows that device is not certified, although I can use Play Store with no issues at all.

7PRO and netflix not working!

ideas? how do I make this work?

With an unlock bootloader you could try clearing data on the play store restarting but you might have to at least flash kernel if you don't want to root
Hi,
tried it, did not help, still getting the same error, "app needs updating" and then on the play store it says "not supported".
is this because of the unlocked bootloader? should I re-lock? and if so, will re-locking delete the phone? or is that just when unlocking ?
thanks!

Did you flash a kernel like elemental I think will pass safety-net. If not I know for sure if you just flash magisk you'll pass safety-net
Relocking will delete everything
---------- Post added at 05:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:55 AM ----------
If you do install magisk clear data on the play store again reboot and then open the play store go to settings and make sure the bottom it says device is certified and then you should be able to install your apps again

Keep in mind if you do decide to relock your bootloader flash the full OTA first or fastboot your factory image if you can find it. So you don't end up with a brick.
Using in-tune for MDM, which as far as I know, will fail me if the phone is rooted (from past experience).

It's a cat & mouse game, where a new version of in-tune will detect the root, until a new root hide option comes out. tried it in the past and it's a headache.
what i'm wondering about it, I have friends with rooted 7PRO with none of these issues (runs fine). They can't watch in HD but that's understandable.
So this means it *can* work, so what am I missing? I would hate to have to re-lock and start everything fresh.

I'm not having any problems with root. but for you you're not out much by trying to just flash magisk. If it doesn't work for you can always flash the stock boot image, or flash the OTA again to put you back to stock
I had the same issue.. flashing Magisk and then hiding Netflix in MagiskHide solved my problem
OK, so digging deeper into this, seems the bootloader has nothing to do with it. it's just a playstore regional lock on downloading the app combined with just an older app version. finding the right apk to use to upgrade was just a matter of time, and now works very well

I think unlocked bootloaders trip safety net now. That means that you must root with Magisk if you wanna use stuff that blocks root (ironic, I know).

Hi all,
new 7 PRO arrived. restored from my older 5T.
trying to run netflix i get the "device not supported by app".
opening app store, I get "not available for this device"
and now that I have "disabled" the app, I can't even find it anymore, nor do i see it when searching app store.
ideas? how do I make this work?

With an unlocked bootloader, you need to flash magisk for Netflix to work. Otherwise it won't work. If you use the Netflix app that comes preinstalled, you will get HDR even though it will be sd with an unlocked bootloader.

Netflix does not stream 4K on any mobile device, rooted or not. Resolution for all Android devices is capped at 720p (some iPhones and iPads can stream up to 1080p). Drops to 480p if you unlock the bootloader and lose Widevine L1 status.
delete, reboot and install from play store.

You have to work a bit to keep GPay working, and the solution definitely requires root. The current solution has been working for a few months and works on Android 10, but who knows if they will "fix" the current hack. You will absolutely not be able to download Netflix from the Play Store. There is one build on APK Mirror that will sideload and run, but of course you will get no updates. I've been running that build on the Pixel for about 6 months, and I have a tablet that does get Netflix updates yet I see no difference between that Feb build and Netflix even from a few days ago. Those are the only two things impacting me. Obviously, need to hide apps with Magisk and such is user specific (my car's door unlock/diagnostics/etc detects root without hiding it, but it works fine once hidden).

You can relock the BL, but you need to first return to absolute stock (no root, no kernel, no custom recovery, etc - pretty much flash the factory image with wipe to both slots to be safe). Then the relock will perform another factory reset anyways. So, if you are asking if you can keep anything you've done while unlocked the answer is no. To me, the biggest reason for unlocking beyond root is that it is almost impossible to hard brick the Pixel with an unlocked BL. It is pretty easily accomplished when locked down and can even happen as a result of a bad OTA or something that is not your fault at all.

understood, if only need back to absolute stock its okay for me. though it will like other smartphone need "drm" to relock.
yeah agree, why i think to unlock is about avoid brick or similar thing. but before i do that i need to know what feature will lost, so i asking here.
if relock again, all things will back to normal again right?

No, there is no residual damage like lost Knox. Everything would return to normal once BL is locked back up.

Lost Widevine L1 after upgrading to Android 11

Title says it all. I never trusted Lenovo with updates. They always manage to **** something up! Anyway to get it back? Will downgrading to Android 10 fix it?

I mean mine is fine so not sure why yours dropped honestly, fully rooted with magisk the uses zygisk and using kdragons safety net fix
Try jsut reflashing the stock firmware, thats the best I can say to a possible fix, you can't downgrade due to downgrade protections that I believe are found within the gpt file unless thats changed

Mine shows this in DRM info.
Can I reflash stock without factory reset?

Unfortunately no, what you could do before doing the reflash is just doing a backup, you can use the backup option the phone/Google provides in settings if you want, personally that's what I do but I don't use twrp either so I'm not sure if you have twrp and if twrp affects that. I will say though I also have the Motorola edge 2021 and when I unlocked the bootloader while it was still on Android 11 my widevine got dropped down to L3 but then I did the ota to Android 12 since I didn't use magisk at that time yet and I'm not sure what I did or anything like that but my widevine went back to L1 and it's stayed that way since and I got 2021 in may, could be a similar thing happening with you just with the 2020 model. I can also say since I still own the Moto edge 2020 and got it on day of release I never had an issue with my widevine being dropped to L3 as shown in my screenshot it's on L1 using dev check, and I did just download DRM info to double-check that on the Moto edge 2020 and it is still showing L1 so I can't say if doing a reflash of the Android 11 firmware will work but it might. I've had to reflash The 2020 edge hella including using a blank flash to get it out of hard brick and it still hasn't dropped to L3 once

Thing is I've never unlocked the bootloader on this phone nor rooted it. Only thing I did is have it perform multiple OTAs one after the other when I decided to upgrade to Android 11. Maybe something got corrupted during that?
Anyway, thanks for the help. I may just leave it as is since I'm worried I'll screw up reflashing it lol.

Oh if your bootloader is locked and everything and you just been doing the OTAs that's 100% just some random BS lmao that's actually a situation if you know the phone still in warranty you can probably call Motorola about that and get a replacement fr lol, and I'll be the one to say/ask it since other people will probably see this and be like yo what the hek, how is it you're a senior member but you're worried you'll screw up reflashing it lol jsut use the moto flash utility provided here (not being a butt I swear, text makes me sound bad lmao) really unless you're trying to watch Hulu and Netflix exclusively on your phone widevine honestly is not that important to deal with either I don't think Spotify is affected by it so your music quality "should" be the same still at least but again idk for sure since I haven't had widevine issues with mine, jsut the 2021 model, but that fixed itself otaing to 12 lol
