Need help choosing next phone. Would like to be able to tether hotspot for free - Android General

Hey guys, I have been out of the modding scene since Samsung started locking the battery in the phone. My current G7E+ is falling apart and I need something new. I went to browse on AT&T devices but I'm pretty overwhelmed with choices, and have no idea which of these devices are rootable/moddable, or if unlocking tethering for free is still even an option.
Mandatory things:
unlock free hotspot tethering
badass camera
big screen
big battery
Any advice? Thanks.

Advice for newbie on phones

I have a topic active regarding getting my ATT Note 3 up to V.7 It seems as much as I love the Note 3, ATT and others don't want me to enjoy all it has to offer by putting up so many road blocks to getting it to a better state of being.
With that in mind I have a two part question.
1. Is there some place to buy a totally unbranded Note 3 or 4 that has no locked bootloader etc?
2. Is there another brand that has similar quality and function that is easy to work with regarding custom ROMs? ( I like the OLED display! )
( GSM for either ATT or T-Mobile use in USA ) I don't want to pay through the nose for a brand new or most current device, happy with older generation or good used device, but not even sure what to look for.

Has someone boiled this down to a list of some kind? Second topic has over 1000 pages. By the time I read to the last page, there will be 100 new phones on the market? LOL
There must be a top 10!
1000 opinions not specific

I did look around but way too many pages with far to little information.
Many people simply mentioned a make/model they like without any reference to it's ability to accept MODS or be rooted etc. I can make a list of available phones but that won't tell me if I were to buy any given phone that it lends itself to being rooted and modded.
That's why I was hoping someone with hands on for some specific models could point me in the right direction given that I specified the issue of locked boot loaders and not being able to install different mods.
That topic is too general and fill of likes and dislikes based on so many variables and I'm already 71!

Need some recommendations please!

Hello all! Long time no post. Hope all is well.
So I'm looking to get a new android device soon but unfortunately I've no idea which one. Currently I have the Samsung galaxy j3 emerge and I'm a Samsung fan so I've been looking at those. I've come up with a list of things I'd like it to have (feature wise) so if you can give me recommendations based on this, it'd be amazing.
Requirements:
-Carrier: unlocked or able to be used on virgin mobile (I think almost all sprint phones can be. Correct me if I'm wrong)
-Nfc
-Amoled screen
-Latest Android
-Custom roms
-5ghz wifi support
-SD card slot
-Ir blaster (maybe. Optional but would be nice)
-Headphone jack (also optional I suppose. Can't believe I have to say that lol)
***Less than $500 USD***
If there's anything that might match this, or really close to it, that would be amazing. Also, will take other good recommendations as long as below $500.
Thanks guys!

Best phone for a flashaholic?

Using a op5t as my daily driver, untouched running oreo. However over the past few years I've put many a device in hospital and don't wanna do it to my main phone as I need it working without bugs or issues.
Looking for options for a additional phone I can mess around with that has plenty of support still in XDA, obvs a 2nd hand nexus 6p would be amazing but the ones I'm seeing on eBay are a bit battered, I'd love to buy a brand new phone for my addiction. I honestly miss it all and just want a good machine to play around with?
Moto? Samsung? What would you go with? Without breaking the bank?
Thanks in advance.

Which brand is the best moddable?

Dear forum,
I am a long term iPhone-User who tends to switch to Android and is fascinated with the possibilities of modding. I also finished my first "project" and rooted/unlocked/customromed an old i9250 from a friend w/ 7.1.2 rom.
As an iPhone user, i am somewhat spoiled with years-long software-updates and i want to stay this way when i'm switching to android.
For now, i researched like 6 months which brand is the best moddable, but the results so far are a little bit depressing.
I can barely find ANY mod for ANY device that does not suffer from "bugs" that make it unusable like battery drain/no 4G/bad camera quality/wifi problems/old Android version/speed problems.
So far, i consider the best moddable devices are from xiaomi and - in a limited way - oneplus.
So I'm asking you, if money and specs ain't a thing and you focus in softwareupdates, which brand would you choose? Is there something i have overseen? Is my attitude wrong, is it normal in android-world to live with the above bugs?
Would appreciate a good advice/critics.

Suggest a simple Android phone

My Mom has had great use out of her old Lumia 430 but it is really is long in the tooth and I would rather she uses an Android device as I am far more familiar with that OS than Windows.
She just uses the phone for browsing, email, whatsapp and Facebook. So really don't need lots of RAM.
She likes the 4" screen size but she is well into her 80's and I am sure she would see a 5" screen much easier.
The phone needs to unlocked as she uses GSM in another country.
I am reluctant to get a phone that's too old as she will start running into battery issues.
I have looked at Swappa and see there are some unused Galaxy S5's for about $190.
What else should I be looking at that may cost less than $190??
Thanks.
