Deleting files on SD card does not free up space on SD card - General Questions and Answers

I'm facing this issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS7/comments/5dpuqi/deleting_files_on_sd_card_does_not_free_up_space/
when I delete a big folder, it's not deleted, but moved in "system data" instead, I remove the card, I plug it in my pc and my pc says that the device has to be checked for errors, it runs the check and then creates a folder named found.000, if I delete this, the free space is regained! I've already formatted my sd card, same issue happened!

I've got a similar 1gb of data in internal too but this should be the mi cloud backup?
is it stored locally?
how can I delete it?
(I'm root)

I noticed the same thing happens when I delete a large file from the internal storage,
is this a nougat feature or a miui one?
any way I can force android to delete these files instantly instead of moving them to system data
and maybe deleting after reboot?

I formatted it to exfat and I think it does the job (instant delete), finally!

[Q] android secure folder on sd card ? asec files

so its my understanding that when you use apps 2 sd it stores them in the android secure file on my sd . now if thats wrong all together then what exactly is that folder for ? is it my titanium backup files ? Anyway my question is if im not relying on my apps to sd back up anymore i.e all of my apps are on my internal hard drive and the apk files exist in another folder on the sd card can i get rid of those files in the adroid secure folder on my sd card ? its taking up 7.5 gb of my 8 gb sd card so i have no room to add anything and half of the apps in there i already uninstlled from my phone but yet they still are taking up all the room on my sd card....
delete all third party apps.. except those present in the stock rom
Just delete the folder. I would back it up first, just in case. If all of your apps are on internal storage, you should be fine.
If that doesn't work, move everything on your SD card to your computer and format the card. Then move whatever you need back to the card.

[Q] app get copied to external SD Card rather than internal SD Card

hi, im Geoff.
recently after flashing the stock 4.0.3 ICS firmware, flashing a old bootloader and using my own USB Jig and resetting
the flash counter for kernels, i finally flashed JellyBean 4.1.2 Original Firmware from Samsung. my mobile is Galaxy S2 i9100.
my problem is i recently bought a 16GB micro sd card and inserted it into my phone before i could install any app onto my phone.
then i installed few apps and games from the Google Play Store. then i noticed the external sd card have about 120 mb of used
memory. but i only had about 20 mb of data that i copied onto it that were certain zip files and nothing else. i noticed that when i install
any app, then go to applications and move to SD Card option [which previously copied apps to the internal SD Card/USB storage],
is now actually moving the apps to the External SD Card. So if I unmount the external SD Card or remove it, none of my installed apps appear.
My external SD Card is meant for songs and movies. I want my internal SD Card to store all my apps so that i can remove my External
SD Card when ever i want to and swap it or not use it at all.
I also removed the external SD Card and then installed a new app, then use the move app to SD Card option. I got a error message,
saying something like insufficient memory/space.
my doubt is, apps are trying to be moved to the internal sd card but because they cannot be moved, they are being copied to the
external sd card.
any help is appretiated. btw i have rooted my phone by doing the temporary update of CWM from the stock recovery using the update from
external card method. then i also installed SuperSU. so its rooted and i didn't have to flash a kernel to root.
[update] im gonna provide some new info here:
I have a Android folder in my Internal SD Card [sdcard0]
and ".android_secure" in my External SD Card [extSdCard]
/mnt contains
asec [software files stored on the internal memory/ not internal SD Card or sdcard0]
obb [empty]
secure/asec [software moved using move to sdcard option. these files get copied to the extSdCard and not the sdcard0]
.lfs
and the sdcard and extSdCard links.
If I remove my External SD Card and try to move apps to the Internal SD Card using the move to sdcard button in application settings,
I get the insufficient memory error.
Also when I use the move to SD Card button in Application Settings, it shows the file being moved to the USB Storage [which is supposed to be
the internal sd card or sdcard0], yet it actually is being copied into my external SD Card or extSdCard.
What apps/games?
A lot of app data is stored on SD card, whether the core files and executable are on the internal or not, so that may just be cache stuff etc... One way to check is to remove the SD card then try to run whichever apps, I am willing to bet they still run.

i use the move to sd card for most apps/games. apart from 1-2 apps that dont have that option, about 10 apps+games have the option to be moved to the SD Card. And i used that option. But I am positive they got copied to the External SD Card because after I remove the
External SD Card, all the apps disappear.
Also when i then try installing new apps to the phone and then try to move them again [without the external sd card in its slot],
i get the error message of insufficient space/memory.[i have 8GB+ empty space in the internal SD Card]
its really annoying me

Sounds like you have an option enabled in app settings to install all to SD, check your app settings in system settings.

I have gone through everything in settings. I cant find any option where I can actually select weather to install all to SD.
I appretiate you trying to help me out. I hope i find a solution to this problem.
Initailly I felt that it cound be some code causing the apps to move to the external sd card instead of the internal one. But after I got
the error message that I have insufficient space [with the external sd card removed ], even tho I have plenty of space, about 8GB+,
on the internal sd card...so I dont think this is due to any code somewhere pointing to install into the external SD card.
I read somewhere that when the internal sd card is full and no more apps can be installed, the new apps go to the external sd card by default.
Something like that is happening to me, except my internal sd card is fine.
I updated my first post with more info to help diagnose and solve the problem. ty to all trying to help me.

I would back up the stuff you want from SD and from your ROM (to your computer), then go to recovery, full wipe + cache + dalvik, then format external SD, then reboot into system, then restore what you want.

hey man ty for not giving up on me ive not been well and then got so busy recently....
i did what you asked. i even accidently wiped the system folder from cwm recovery. it went into a boot loop or whatever it is called.
i re-flashed the official samsung jellybean firmware 4.1.2 on my i9100. then again cleant delvic + cache +used data. yet the problem
persists.
i noticed that the android folder is being created in the internal sd card. but that android folder has very small amount of the app
files stored on it. the major chunk is in android_secure which is only being stord on the external sdcard.
when i go to mnt folder in root i see two folders named asec and secure.
1."asec" contains apps stored on internal memory [not internal sd card]
and 2. "secure" contains a "asec" folder which stores app stored on the external sdcard.
i believe somewhere the code which should point the android_secure folder to the internal sdcard is pointing to store apps on the
external sd card. perhaps you guys can show me how i can change the folder path of android secure. then it will behave like
default, the way is was meant to behave.
You might need to repartition your system.
I'll see else we can come up with later today, in the mean time, try to maybe use TWRP instead and a different ROM

when i click move to sdcard in the application settings/menu, it shows USB data filling up.
that USB data is supposed to be my USB drive or my Internal SD Card. And the external sdcard shows up
as 0 KB of data. But actually the files are being copied to the external sdcard and not internal.
now if we think the android system cannot access the internal sdcard, then thats not the matter because
it creates a folder named Android in the internal sdcard and stores the app cache there.
So to me it seems that the android system is confused and actually thinks that the android_secure folder is
mounted on the internal sdcard while it actually is mounted on the external sdcard.
perhaps anyone can link me a guide to move my android_secure folder...

TitanHack, did you found an answer?

Security Flaw with external SD card and encryption - file temporarily unencrypted !

It seems there is a security flaw when copying files from encrypted internal storage to encrypted sd card with third party tools.
I have installed a micro sd card and enabled encryption on external sd card. After every boot I get a notification that external sd is encrypted. If I put the sd card in a card reader on my pc, I can see the directory structue and file names on the sd, but I cannot see the contents of the file, because they are encrypted. So far this is expected behaviour.
Now the unexpected part: sd card is installed in phone (no pc involved). I copied files with solid explorer from internal storage to encrypted sd card (side note: i noticed solid explorer cannot access the copied files). I reboot my phone and suddenly it says "encrypting files on sd-card" and a percentage counter went up while the newly copied files get encrypted? Huh !? Second test: I copied files with solid explorer from internal storage to encrypted sd card and shut down the phone, put the sd card in a card reader on an pc and - guess what - the copied files are unencrypted. They get encrypted after next boot in the phone. This behaviour does not occur, if I copy the files with samsungs integrated file explorer. Files copied to the enrypted sd card over mtp connection are encrypted immediately.
I have experienced something similar. I wanted to create a directory on encrypted SD card in ES File Manager. It displayed the message like "...will be created asynchronously" and zero length file was created instead. After reboot and encryption the actual directory was created.
It seems that third party file explorers like solid explorer or ES file manager can access those files/folders (created by themselves on encrypted sd card) only after the files/folders got encrypted after reboot. The flaw I see here is not only that files unexpectedly remain unenrypted on sd card, but also that files are written unencrypted at all and only get encrypted later. There may remain unencrypted parts of sensitive data that someone might be able to recover from sd card (with a data revocery tool).
Sounds like those developers need to update their apps to support Marshmallow's encryption. In the meantime, if you've got sensitive files to copy, use the built-in app.
It seems, that there is some scheduler running encryption over the night. I created a folder on SD card as usually - no folder, only empty file was created initially - and next day there was a folder; without need of reboot.

I tried the same yesterday. I copied a file from internal storage to encrypted sd card with solid explorer and the file is stored unencrypted with 0 byte length. 24 hours later it still remains unencrypted with 0 byte length. Maybe there is something else that triggers the encrpytion (except reboot), but not sure what it is.
EDIT: 48 hours after copying the file it finally got encrypted.

Obb files to /data for better performance

Hi all!
I have an Honor 6, with 16 GB internal storage.
After I've installed many apps, I have about 6 GB free space, so I decided to move my favourite game to the internal storage for better performance/loading times (~1,5 GB), but I can't.
If I just copy the obb files to internal memory, when I start the game it starts to download the whole 1,5 GB again to the external SD.. Doesn't use the files from the internal storage.
However I still want to use my SD Card as primary storage location by default.
I am rooted.
Link2SD, App2SD not working.
Is there any way to set the app, where to search for data files?
Thank you!

Might not work but still, worth a try if you're desperate enough to search Google and post on this forum
Log in to Google Play Games and save your data. Reinstall the app on the internal storage and then log in via google.
Hopefully that worked and hit "thanks" if it did .
Thanks for the tip, but it don't solve my problem.
If I delete and then reinstall the application, it still puts the OBB files to the extranet storage..

Can you please tell me what you did to move your internal storage to your sdcard?
There is some misunderstanding.
I set my SD card as default storage, because I want that apps save their data (downloaded files, settings, etc) to it, except one. I pulled out the SD card, reinstalled the game (in this case, the obb files were on the internal storage), and the performance was way better.
So I want SD card as default (I set it before), except one app for performance reasons.

Sorry for extreme confusion, but, did it work?
No, sadly nothing works..
I only can install obb files to internal storage, if I put out SD, or set "internal storage" in settings.
But I don't want to, because if I set it, EVERYTHING is saved to the SD.... Photos, app data eg.: stickers, backups.. I just want to set the path for the obb files individually.. :/

Please Help Recover Data on Corrupted Adoptable SD Card!

My SD card is set as adoptable storage, but it has gotten corrupted. It happened when I was copying files from my phone to PC via USB (ironically I was doing this to backup my files from my phone). Somewhere during copying, the phone virtually disconnected from the PC, and on my phone it said that it couldn't read my SD card.
Couple of things to note:
I'm using Lineage OS.
The SD card isn't encrypted.
When connecting the SD card directly to my PC, the SD card shows as two drives, D: and E:, with D: being accessible showing an almost empty drive of 29,4 GB (which is the full logical capacity of this drive), and E: inaccessible, requiring a reformat (no idea what E: is). On D: the folders that I can see are .android_secure, Android (with the sub folders data and media) and LOST.DIR. All folders are empty.
This SD card should be filled with data almost up to max capacity.
I haven't changed a thing to the corrupted SD card. I did not reformat, used CHKDSK or w/e. The only things that I have done is attempting to make raw copies with HDD Raw Copy Tool and R-Studio.
I've read here and there that it is (almost?) impossible to logically fix a corrupted adoptable storage SD card in that I could just pop it back into my phone to resume where I exactly left off. So I'm looking to recover as much data from the SD card as possible. I'm most concerned about recovering my Whatsapp folder (I haven't got a complete GDrive backup of this), but I'd prefer to recover everything else as well.
What must I do?
