Yes you need a file to install a custom recovery. It's called an .img file and you install this by using fastboot commands and the Android SDK while in fastboot mode. Head to general and check out the sticky by rootSU. You access recovery by holding power + down while your Nexus 5 is off, if you don't install a custom recovery such as TWRP or CWM you will be on stock recovery and you won't be able to do much. Use the volume buttons to cycle through the options until you see Recovery and tap the power button.
If this didn't help, please be more descriptive as rootSU said.

@rootSU sounds like this is a job for the Sticky! @amongmyselves please click the link in rootSU's SIG and read the sticky about fastboot/adb. Everything you need is in the stickies

Also as a big big hint. When you first root your device you *WILL* lose all your data on your sd partition. So if you've made any changes, etc., be prepared to lose it. Also all your pictures and whatnot. I would suggest doing a copy/paste using your usb cable to like your computer before you root/unlock bootloader. I made that mistake the hard way and feel this should really be in big red letters on the root thread. lol

well go to sticky thread on how to root and stuff in general section and most important create a backup of efs before trying anything so the first thing after getting recovery in get efs and keep it safe in ur pc

No, unlocking the bootloader is what wipes. You can unlock the bootloader but not flash a recovery nor root. Just as there are methods to root without unlocking the bootloader.

need help rooting

I have a alcatel U5 5044A. I cant get root access. Options I tried:
1. I tried to use tools like kingoroot,Vroot,kingroot and towelroot but none aren't working.
2. I enable oem unlock in developer settings to unlock the bootloader and install custom recovery. Open open command prompt and type adb reboot bootloader and the phone reboots into normal mode.
Any other options?

@PizzaG - Question for you - I see in one screenshot that there is an option, "enable fastboot". I have an A501DL, and currently using mtk-su with Magisk successfully, but no access to fastboot to unlock bl, and no chance of r/w access in system otherwise. Could this help me get into fastboot, and, if so, is there some way I could try to just make that happen, without necessarily using the program?

You have to have the fastboot lk to unlock bootloader. Unless you can find that, not gonna happen.
PS- 1 option that comes to mind is trying to flash a bad boot to the device with sugar and then hope and pray that it reboots into fastboot. It's my understanding that fastboot is still there, just the commands to get to it have been removed. I was able to recovery from a bad brick on my device by flashing a bad boot to it and it rebooted to fastboot. Get ahold of me on Telegram if you'd like to discuss itmore

Thanks for the reply. I'm new to mtk. I guess by 'lk' you mean little kernel. From the searching I did, it seems a bit over my head. Is there a way to get that?
I'll look into Sugar at some point. Back on my Xperia XC running Sailfish at the moment..

Yes, Little Kernel on MTK is where fastboot lives. I have a couple ideas you could try to force the device into fastboot . Our fastboot lk's we were lucky enough to find in an old dump. Best bet is to scour the net looking for the oldest dump you can and pray the fastboot lk is enabled. You can find me here live: https://t.me/Android_General_Chat

yesterday, i try your OTA/update zip (Version 0.030.02) for CAT S62 pro, but my phone abort the update because it is the 0.029.0 Version but the phone expect 0.030.02 Version. What is the Problem?
My main Problem is, the phone reboot everytime in recovery mode. Wether the last update my phone shut down because an empty battery. Now i need the right Version of Android for this phone.
Can anyone help me?

How did you force the OTA updates by USB?
I also have a Cat S62 that is stuck in fastboot and will not boot past that.

Can anyone list all OTA update for Cat S62 Pro?
My phone has stock version 0.026.00
Flir camera version is 3.0.38 (I updated to v 3.0.44), everything works, but anybody has old version?
I blocked the android updates with RethinkDNS no-root firewall by blocking the Android process that appears when you click on updating the System ->System update.
You can block these in your router to make sure the phone does not download OS update, before you block the offending system process with the use of the RethinkDNS

I now also own a S62pro and till now it is on 0.022.01. Updates not always make things better, so which version is the one you would recommend?
I expect it will update to the latest Android 10 and then to 11, is this correct? Should I stay at 10 then?

If i can bump the thread for a bit... Is it strange that i have NO OEM unlocking option in developer settings? Australia is the Country., i was thinking maybe they do this to all CAT phones in Aus.
I got My s62 pro couple weeks back. The phone at times gets hot when in use and my voice sounded like i was talking under water , so the person at the other end explained. Generally the audio sounds a bit high pitched, it is a quirky phone. Could it be possible that spyware was installed whilst in transit, and the ability to access OEM unlocking was hidden so not to flash to another rom, just a possibility i was considering.
Lots to take in, hope someone can help. I tried many ways to start the rooting process using fastboot commands but always fails. Tried many solutions but seems i need to find the OEM unlock or i have an expensive paper weight. Hope someone can help. And yes i contacted CAT Support but still waiting so not sure how to proceed, has anyone else`s S62 pro had the missing OEM unlocking option . Any help would be appreciated . Thanks

I have the CAT S62(not pro) version of this phone and desperately need stock firmware, can't find unbrick tool and there is no Firehose decoder file available for it, of anyone knows where I can search the info would be greatly appreciated. Any search I have attempted ends in frustration that everything I need is available for the Pro variant, and the S62 base doesn't have FLIR and the GPS module is different as I'm sure other components are as well, it only cost me $150 as opposed to the $400 for a good used S62 Pro... I have unlocked the bootloader, but can't get boot.img without stock firmware file.

With the phone on, check for the oem unlock toggle in Settings>System>Developer options if u have it and it's not faded, turn it on then

follow prompts on the phone to unlock bootloader
I'm not sure it will even help solve the audio issue, or the temperature, much less make it possible to root, but oem unlocking not available is typical, if you have a s62 pro, get 1 of the packages here and extract boot.img, move it to the phone and patch it with magisk, move the patched boot.img back to PC and
fastboot flash (patched filename).img boot.img

Anybody able to dump the EDL loader? My CAT S62 self bricked.

Question [CLOSED] Poco x3 pro problem !

I was making a video on tiktok and when I was recording the news was heard and after I finished recording the video it was no longer heard, I said let's do a restart. When I restart it, only the POCO logo lights up (it turns on and off continuously) I did a reset, it started, but the sound was not heard. I restarted it and again the same story was touched and the logo was lit. I mention that it had root and I had installed modules from magisk, I had installed audio enhancement modules, a microphone and suddenly it didn't work. I tried to put the official room through Mifkash and the same story, I repaired the phones and they couldn't do anything either . What's the problem? And how can I solve it? Help me please

You already startet a threat with that problem. Opening more threats dont accelerate the answers you will get but make the mods angry, because you violate the rules ... wait patiently or better: try to explain better where your problem is. I used google translate to understand what you were writing in your first threat, but i didnt get what your problem is...

Maybe take it to a repair shop. And what problem occurs when you try flashing from miflash tool?

install fastboot latest rom via cmd
Look google
Or install twrp put custom rom inside sdcard factory reset wipe data install rom then wipre data again reboot
