Decided to root my second hand Samsung S8 + but have managed to get stuck on the screen below with not a clue on how to get out of it. I am unable to swipe to unlock.
My first attempt at rooting so please keep any reply's simple as I do not seem very adept at this black art.
I was following this guy. https://galaxys8root.com/galaxy-s8-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s8-or-s8-plus-on-android-8-0-oreo/

okay so TWRP got a timeout mode just like any android does, after a certain time it goes on a black screen and when turned back on you get the swipe to unlock screen that you are seeing.
Under that lock overlay is your first setup, it asks you to either use twrp in read-only or enable write for it (enabling write makes twrp possible to deny the replacing of TWRP for the default recovery mode)
You should be able to just turn off your s8 and reboot into TWRP
*Note im not responsible for causing a brick, its a unlikely event that will occur but thought to mention it

Holding the power button does absolutely nothing so I have no idea how to turn it off.
Holding the power button and volume down gets me to this screen but the phone does not respond to touching or swiping?

I am guessing that you mean use Odin to install the TWRP.tar file again? If so nothing happening after clicking start.
Trying to reflash with the correct firmware does zilch also.
My problem with this is after downloading the correct firmware and putting the files in there correct boxes and pressing start the only thing that happens is on the left side Odin box I have File analysis which is correct below that is setupconnection and then nothing seems to be happening.
I am assuming that this is because I am not in download/recovery mode but stuck on the twrp lock screen?

Nope, that just removes the big white padlock for a while.
The power + vol down + bixby is really built into the phone. I've yet to see a situation where that combo won't reboot. How long have you held the buttons? Sometimes it takes 15sec or so. Also, try to see if twrp is giving you ADB access by default and try to reboot that way. Also. Very worst case is you let it die, then when you plug it in do the key combo to get into download mode, flash whatever file you want and keep going.

Not a genius by a long shot, but have felt the despair of having a pricey paper weight on my desk before haha. Well. You can try flashing TWRP again, see if that shakes it out of its little loop. Otherwise, you can flash the original firmware like you were saying earlier just to get back to normal. I'd try flashing twrp again and see if that fixes it first.

I don't bother rooting anymore. If I want to rid myself of bloatware, I just flash using the Unlocked no carrier firmware.
Of course this is just my opinion, and I know there are other reasons. But if someone is a real novice, they should probably stay away fro rooting, or risk that pricey paper weight.

First off is your phone unlocked from the carrier? If so you can google and find the firmware for your device. You can also search XDA under Samsung S8+. You will be using ODIN, so you should be familiar with that.

Looks like you may need to make a jig for it if that doesnt work. Most likely something happened to remove your 3 button options so you will need something to force it to turn on. That is where odin comes in. I use the one click as that is the version that came on my phone. Some came with jh7 on them.

Now for the dumb question time. Do you have the captivate drivers installed? As long as you can get into DL mode then it is a driver issue with your PC. Grab the drivers and install them

I would but I am mobile at the moment. I have had a few issues with the drivers needing to be uninstalled and reinstalled to get it to work.
Not sure I follow you here. Does your phone do anything? Will it go into download mode?
If so it must be a driver/pc issue. I have randomly had my Win7 x64 computer stop recognizing my phone. Sometime uninstalling drivers and reinstalling worked. The last time I did a system restore to a few days earlier and it worked. Worst case try another PC.
IF you phone stays BLACK, no response, no download mode, nothing. I would try a jig. Go to radioshack get 3 100kohm resistors and well... Go to the DEV section and look in the stickies. It's in a guide somewhere. But should cost a $1 or so.
Good luck.

If it does nothing when you load up odin and then hold both volume buttons and plug it into the pc then your only other option is a jig.

Am I Bricked?
Many people get confused on whether they are bricked or not, so I am creating this thread to help you see if you are bricked, identify your problem, and fixing it.
The term bricked means that you have "tweaked" your phones software or hardware a little to far, leaving you with a brick, or paperweight.
There are two types of bricks, Soft Brick and Hard brick. Soft Bricks are generally easy to recovery from and can result in an error in flashing kernels, modems, etc.
Soft Brick
To identify a soft brick:
1. Pull your battery.
2. Re-Inster your battery.
3. Power on your device.
If your phone is soft bricked, you will see a image like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

As I have not been bricked in a while, I do not remember if this resets your phone to stock or if it enables download mode. If it does not reset your phone to stock, use Heimdall to do so.
After following all of theese steps, you should be running stock 2.2 froyo rooted.

More information on Soft Brick:
the soft brick screen can occasionally be used as a Download mode screen.
Chances are you received the soft brick while attempting to odin-flash something. (or heimdall)
Reboot odin (or heimdall) and phone (to soft brick screen) and re-attach cable, the first box in odin should turn yellow. If it does, flash a full rom/stock rom.

Hard Brick
To Identify a hard brick:
1.Pull your battery
2.Re-Inster your battery
3.Plug your phone in. (into the wall, Not computer)
3A: If you do not get the battery charging animation, you may be hardbricked.
4:Hold your power button.
4A: If your phone refuses to power on at all, you are hard bricked.(if you can get to the AT&T screen, your are not technicly hard bricked, follow the following bootloop instructions)
Hardbricks are harder to recover from, and you will need a jtag or the unbrickable mod applied to your device. If you do not know how to solder, or you are completely new to it, I suggest you have it jtagged by MobileTechVideos here. If you are an expert at soldering, or have someone you can trust to solder wires to your phones board, then you can attempt the unbrickable mod here.
Bootloop
By definition, a bootloop is not a brick, but can leave your phone as useful as one. Bootloops can be caused by corrupt bootloaders, kernels, Roms, or Roms running on incompatible bootloaders.
Identify a bootloop:
1. power on your device.
2. If your phone does not get past the AT&T screen, you are in a bootloop.
If you are in a bootloop after flashing a new rom:
Try reflashing the Rom, and make sure your kernel and rom are compatible with your bootloader.
If you are in a bootloop after flashing a new kernel:
Try reflashing the kernel, and make sure your kernel and rom are compatible with your bootloader.
If you are in a bootloop after flashing a new bootloader:
Reflash the bootloader, and make sure your rom and kernel are compatible with the bootloader.
If you can not enter download mode after flashing your bootloader:
Try to wait out the bootloop, if you manage to get your phone booted (may take up to 4 hours) download terminal from the market, and use the command: Reboot download, then reflash to stock using heimdal
If you are unable to get your phone into download mode, you will need Jtag or unbrickable mod. (I had this problem, My phone booted after 2 hours from powering it on. since this happened while flashing back to stock, I was unrooted, and had to wait a total of 7 hours, through 3 reboots to get my phone rooted and into download mode.)
If I missed something, feel free to tell me .

Yeah, if the phone-!-computer screen says something about hardware failure, that will also work as dl mode. For more info, hit the captivate sig link below and look for connection issues and also download mode.

Thanks . added to OP.
I used MobileTechVideos last month! After a flash gone wrong, my Captivate was hard bricked, ie, I couldn't even start it! No power, nada, it was dead! After reading a couple of reviews here and other places, I decided to send my phone (from Québec, Canada)!
I got it back and I can vouch for the great service! My cappy is running great! Communication was very good!
So, yeah, I highly recommend their services if you don't know how to solder and don't know what to do (like me). I could have tried but I'm pretty sure I would not have my phone anymore!

if the button combos or a jig won't work (which in my case they did not) you will need to find a program that will auto root without the use of cwm. you will most likely have to reboot another time. after that go to the market and get terminal emulator. then use command su then command reboot download. first try the button combos.
1. hold vol up and down and plug in your USB cable to your phone and computer.
2. try vol - and power button at same time. post again if you need anymore assistance

According to this thread, I am hard bricked..
Whenever I try to plug my phone into the computer or wall to charge, it doesn't.
It shows the "loading" image and flickers on to the image of the battery charging animation, then flickers off.
I removed my battery, put it back in, and now it doesn't show signs of life.
The circumstances on how I got to this part are confusing, however. My phone was working properly a couple days before, but I noticed that overnight, while charging, it didn't reach 100%.
I didn't worry too much, carried on with my day and my phone died in the middle of the day. It hasn't been able to turn on/charge since. I was running an older version of MIUI, if that helps.
I'm hoping it's just a battery issue and nothing major, but it fits the description of a hardbrick.
Any ideas? Please let me know if this is the wrong place for it.

I'm hoping it's just a battery issue and nothing major, but it fits the description of a hardbrick.
Any ideas? Please let me know if this is the wrong place for it.

Hello all,
Yesterday I was trying to flash JB, flash it successfully but then when i need to flash gapps the rainbows inside recovery was so annoying that i try to flash a GB bootloader, I think because the driver or something else the flash wasn't right and since then I got a expensive paperweight. Trying to boot in download mode the phone turn on showing a completely white screen for about 3 seconds then the phone turn off and thats is a eternal loop. turn on > white screen > turn off. When the screen is white ODIN and Heimdall recognize the phone but the device simply turn off after seconds so is impossible to flash something.
Today i got a JIG MicroUSB try to boot in Download Mode with it but does not work.
Help I read several threads along XDA but nothing could help by now.
Thanks in advance
I sure hope that you tried flashing some other things using Heimdall or Odin before using your choice of software to flash bootloaders.
In this state you're in, have you tried the battery pull, hold volume buttons, plug in usb, put battery back in, continue holding power button method to enter download mode?
If you can get to download mode this way, you aren't bricked.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Seems to me you have definitely bricked it :s A bootloader flash is practically the only way our phone can be bricked. That is why it is recommended to flash other things first to make sure odin has no issues with drivers and such
Sent from my sweet and buttery Infuse
Sure I flash another things, and yes I try all the combo buttons to enter in download mode. Nothings happens i can't get into download mode.
In case that I hardbrick my device there is another easy solution.

You may be right, but we don't know for sure that he's bricked yet. We've seen several close calls where the Infuse has made it through - even after a borked bootloader flash.

Yep a lot of times.
You mention that Odin sees the device for a moment before the device loops. As a last ditch effort, you may be able to issue an "adb reboot download" command using adb on your PC. No guarantee that this will work, but it's worth a shot.

Gotta try to issue the command at the same moment that Odin sees the device.

You can download what you need for adb from here: http://d-h.st/2mi
Extract the zip package, browse to the unzipped folder where you'll see adb.exe and some other files. Place all of those files in the Windows folder on your C:\\ drive. Then, press the Windows key on your keyboard + R so that the "Run" prompt appears. Type cmd and then press enter. In the command prompt, type this just as Odin sees your device (keep an Odin window open to be sure):
Code:
adb reboot download
The problem is, if both your primary and secondary bootloaders are screwed up, you may never get into download mode. It's worth a shot to try, though.
I agree jscott, I believe there's still hope !
I have managed to rescue my infuse from some dark moments.. once I used this one-click unbrick and I managed to save it.
See if you have my same luck with it
Through ADB Shell was imposible that recognize the device, JAVA One Click works for a moment like Odin but the device desconnected so is not much what i can do. Here post a PIC of what a can reach through ODIN so my question will be if i can make ODIN doesn't check MD5's and flash direct or something similar.

Sorry, but neither Odin or Heimdall will work unless you are able to get the phone into download mode. If it turns out that you really have borked the bootloaders, you won't be able to get into download mode. Someone will have to make a jtag repair like in the video below to restore your phone. The guys in this video are reputable and can fix it.:

Any solution that finallly find to fix my phone i'll be posting here.
Here's a thought have you tried a different USB cable and USB slots. I have 2 phones one likes to connect to front of my PC the other in the back. Plus USB cables get worn out a new one may connect better.

Try taking your battery out for a few hours..or better yet, a day. Charge your battery fully using an external source or use a different fully charged battery, after a day and then try again.

You should of started off fresh, a complete wipe/restore and then the bootloaders <(assuming you had success with

Good to all, yesterday I downloaded an operating system for my phone, it came from a brick, it turns out and I did flash by dload folder by pressing the 3 corresponding buttons. It arrived at 100% normal and it restarted automatically, but it does not give image, is in black screen. I had the idea to connect it to the pc, and it recognizes the pc, appears in fastboot mode and appears in My Pc an ADB device.
Someone please help me solve it. Thank you

I got you. For using the dload method you don't need a screen to see. Just keep holding all the 3 keys together (Volume up, down and power)
try this or if you already did let me know.

My friend, the phone was fine. What I did was to install an update and reached 100%, after that, the phone automatically rebooted and did not turn on the screen anymore, it turned black, I connect it to the pc and it recognizes it by fastboot and adb, but it does not present any image

Bro can you can try to unbrick using dcunlocker , may be it give some luck , we have no other options.
As you said your device is detected by ADB, so why don't you try to boot it into bootloader then extract your Update.app from dload folder and flash them using fastboot commands manually.

But sad thing is the phone is not allowed in his country:crying:
What is his country? And if it was bought from China/Hongkong/Singapore the seller will take the phone to repair. & and if the phone is from somewhere else he needs to contact the Huawei support of that country and that's it. If he is lucky he will get a free Airway bill (like I got an hour ago) from Huawei and KABOOMH! His device will be fixed and sent back to him via mail. Simple.....................

If it's from China/Hongkong/Singapore it could take months because of the seller. But if its from huawei, No more then a month via any kind of express shipping(HDL/FedEx/Aramax/SMSA)
Also he can repair it through the huawei service of his country by paying a lot of money.
I have the same problem here! Did anyone found a solution? Please help me guys =(

Hello!
It seems I have the same problem in the op.
My honor 8 seems being bricked: it does not boot, does not vibrate, the LED does not light up and the phone does not give sign of life.
There is only a beep when I plug in the phone to the pc anche when I type "fastboot devices" I see the serial number on the phone and the little icon on my desktop like in the pic above.
I tryed unbricking it using multi tool with boot, cust, recovery and system.img and the flash is okay but after this flash the phone is in the same situation before the flash.
I asked in the multi tool's thread and someone told me it is the "Black fastboot issue".
I Google it and I find this thread..

Hi! I have a big problem with my tablet... after flashing Lineage OS we had two happy month, but one day I turned on the device and a message appeard. The tablet couldn't find the internal memory.
So I went in recovery, I wiped everything, but I couldn't flash because internal memory wasn't in list!
So I turned off and on, and now it is almost dead.
The screen turns on when I charge it, but it freeze on the battery loading icon.
When remove the cable, the image is still here.
To turn off, I have to press alla the buttoms together for some seconds.
Is it dead? What can I do? I can't boot it or access to recovery.
Thank you!

Did you download the Stock ROM?. first thing first download the stock.. .. there is a post up above by JJEgan with a link for Samsung Note 10.1 I'm not sure which of the variant you have so the rest is pretty much up to you, if you don't comprehend easily you should watch a tutorial on YouTube about flashing stock rom on the note 10.1 ...
Enbert?.. you don't need to "turn on" the tablet to flash it with Odin, you just need to be in "Download Mode".. by holding the Volume down button then the power button until the screen is Sky blue.. try putting it in download mode now & let me know....
AND YOU SHOULD CONSIDER THANKING PEOPLE WHEN THEY RENDER ASSISTANCE & THEIR TIME, POST OF WISDOM, THERE IS A THANKS BUTTON, USE & PRESS IT MORE WHILE.

I wasn't "asking" for thanks, I was suggesting he thanked you being that you explained and appointed a link to him long before I tried to. ?
I do not know how to thanks via smartphone, I don t know very well this forum, sorry for not sending a "thanks".
Writing "turn on" I didn t mean boot android, sorry for the misunderstanding. I mean turn on in recovery, download or anything else.
Yes no download mode is the problem.
Thanks are up to you and nobody else .Thats XDA rules.
Personally i dont need them at all .
