Hi All,
Just like many other users, I really want to get rid of EMUI 8, which made me seek for a better OS for my mate 9.
Thanks to the Treble project, I have already found that many users started their new life with the Honor view 10 version of lineageos 15.1 on their mate 9 devices.
I refered to some topics in XDA, and found that most of the posters are discussing about RR, only less words are about lineageos itself.
As the RR developer said, the latest version which was build on 2.4.2018 had an issue of front camera, but seems that this issue is not listed in lineageos not working list of the latest build on 29.4.2018.
I just have something to share and some question about lineageos instead of RR this time.
The first thing is to share about the encrypt issue in TWRP.
The posters discussed about RR before all mentioned that the DATA and SDCARD partition are encryped which made us not able to modify them or put the zip files in them in TWRP.
But as I remember, when I upgraded to stock OREO rom in Dec 2017, we can format DATA and SDCARD partitions in TWRP, and they will be decryped permanently unless we use a stock rom to initialize the system again.
Anybody has tried it in LineageOS 15.1?
And my question is about the wipe actions before we boot to LineageOS.
I am a little bit busy everyday, and I use my mate 9 for daily usage, so I have no enough time to test. Hope that anybody can help on testing or have already tested about the issues below?
1. Do we really need to wipe everything with the stock recovery? Or TWRP to wipe data, cache, sdcard etc is good enough? (Because the developer of LineageOS never mentioned in his/her post that we need to wipe everything with the stock recovery)
2. Is there any requirement of the kernal version? I am using the B334 version of OREO, and the version is a Chinese one. The kernal is 4.4.23+.
Hope that somebody can answer me the question before I flash. It will take me about several hours to recover all the software and data if I failed in booting LineageOS (because currently I am using a stock rom, which made data and sdcard partitions encrypted and not able to backup), and I am really busy these days... Thanks a lot.

Hi,
Due to the lack of updates for LineageOS for the Nexus 5 since January, and the lack of Oreo or Pie support, I thought it was time now to switch to a different ROM... my device is now more than 5 years old but still works fine so thought it was time to squeeze a bit more life out of it
I came across CRdroid which seems to have the most recent update (June 10th).
Looking at the steps to install quickly, it *looks* like it's the same installation procedure as Lineage (and thus I could refer to the Lineage docs for detailed explanation, as it's been a while now - 15 months or so - since I installed Lineage) except that it needs a custom TWRP (TWRP-UA) rather than the stock one.
Is this correct?
Is this the correct link for the custom TWRP? : https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=30433
Is there anything else I need to do for CRdroid which isn't necessary for Lineage?
What about Resurrection Remix? Is it again the same procedure? Any specific version of TWRP needed?
Any advantages or disadvantages of both ROMs?
Thanks,
Nick
Well, just installing the custom TWRP will do you nothing. You have to repartition your device before flashing either of the ROMs you mention. Let me explain:
The main problem with the Nexus 5 and almost all Pie-based ROMs (except Unlegacy Android I think) is that you cannot fit the ROM together with a GApps package in the 1GB system folder. Not even pico will fit. So, in order to increase the /system size, a repartition is required. By far, the easiest way is flashing Clamor's repartioning zip, found in the parent folder of the TWRP download link you posted. This way a 1.5GB /system is achieved, and you can proceed to flash a ROM of your liking with a larger Gapps package. Actually, take some time to read through that thread. If you follow the steps listed in OP, you are good to go. Some pages later, an even more detailed procedure is listed (link).
After that, the flashing process is no different than any other ROM. Now, regarding which ROM to choose, I suggest you look into the respective threads for input. In my experience, it is a process of trying the ROM yourself, and see if it fits your needs.
I know we don't have a complete implementation of recoveries, like twrp/of (I know it's basically the same), yet. But now that we have the kernel source, what is still missing (vendor?)?
Also and kinda of a similar question, what is still missing regarding a "normal" flashing process? Like wipe system, data, dalvik/art, cache, flash rom and not having to have a base stock firmware and needing to format data.
To be honest, I'm a bit confused with this phone. My other phones (admittedly last one's didn't get past Android 9), were so different in that regard.
So I'd really appreciate if someone could take the time to shed some light on this.
Maybe we'll see a stable version of twrp for surya but support for dynamic partitions will not be available soon.
Having to format data everytime you flash a new rom may be solved having the kernel source. I think it has to do with encryption keys. Even if you don't have any password set in the OS, miui still generates keys to encrypt the data and when you wipe only, they get deleted hence, data on the internal nemeory remains encrypted. That's what I think.

Ok, to be honest and judging by the fact that the announcement by Dees_Troy was over a year ago, things look pretty difficult to say the least.
I had my last phone (axon7) for so long that all the new implementations, like dynamic linking and super partition, weren't really on my radar.
Guess I was a little naive in thinking that the kernel source would be of any help in that regard.
This lack of stable time-tested solutions worries me, too.
That's the main reason why I'm still on stock ROM on the Poco and the Axon 7 is still my daily driver.

How about EU ROM ?
Thanks for your thread.
I'm asking too.
I went from an old device too (redmi note 4 mido), and i'm a bit lost on flashing process.
Is it possible to :
Install orangefox via fastboot.
Wipe all & format data.
Flash recommend firmware for rom.
Flash custom rom.
Flash gapps.
And boot ?
Any problem with that ? What i'm missing ?
Don't have phone now, I'm waiting for shipping, and will wait for unlock bootloader access. I hope it will more clear and simple when I will discover poco x3.
You can do all those things. What you can't do for example is make a backup and restore your current custom rom.
Oh ok.
Sorry, miss understood your op post.
I was confused because on some custom roms thread, I find strange install instructions, like : dont wipe anything, format data AFTER flash custom roms...
Somes roms requires frimware 12.0.3. What about if phone have a more recent ? Can I downgrade just by flash fw+vendor on recovery before flash rom ?
And some people said they have bricked there devices.
Just to be sure to don't make stupid error on fresh new device, that I can't solve with miflash and fastboot.
Thank you for your reply.
I only clean flash roms, never backup, don't have a lot of apps, and majority have import/export options in-app.
But I hope for you it will be fixed soon.

As @[armitage] pointed, it doesn't enable nandroid backups that I know of.

Hello everyone,
I am creating this post because I would like to know if someone has already installed Ressurection Remix on a Galaxy A8 ?
I saw some tutorials that are explaining this is possible, but when I go to the Ressurection Remix official download page, I cannot find which file is specific to the galaxy A8. Actually, I have some difficulties to understand the files names : Raphael, Sakura, Jason,... Are theses names code names for différents phones ?
I may add that the bootloader of my phone is unlocked, and I am using TWRP to flash zip files.
I didn't treblelize my phone thought.
If you have some other custom rom suggestions, please do not hesitate to advise me.
You can install RR through GSI, by this link
You will have to trebelize your device
Because it's a gsi android 10, you can use vendor quack
Treble Guide
Vendor Quack
Thanks for your reply. Yes I saw that it was possible to treblelize the phone, to install other rom like the very famous lineage os.
But I am little bit hesitant about this procedure : is everything working well with the phone after a treblelization ? Has anyone tried this method?

Treblizing the phone itself does not cause any problem rather it enables you to install different GSIs. Regarding GSIs, each have there own bugs and you have to find them on the GSI thread if available or if they have telegram or github support.
Hey, just made an account to respond to this as I just discovered there are per-device pages on these forums and saw this post, I have done exactly that and been running it for 2+ years now, so far I have had no majour problems wih it, the only majour caviat is that after trebblimg it and installing resurrection remix It seems to freeze when trying to display the charging animation if the phone is off and it plugged in, it still charges without any problems, tho to boot it when in this situation you need to force shut it down using the volume_down + lock buttons and then immidiately after use volume_up + lock buttons to boot into recovery, then you can boot to the normal system from there, I have a TWRP recovery but I think the stock one also allows to resume booting the normal system.
In these last months I had a few weird bugs like the screen brightness beeing locked to automatic but that went away after a reboot and only happened 1 time.
I also installed magisk and a few other small tweaks and things and everything works great, also all resurrection remix customization options.
Actually in the last few months something broke because the safetynet checks fail for the ctsProfile, (most apps like my banking app tho still work fine by using magisk hide (i think it's because the safetynet basicIntegrity check still succeds) and the update page seems also broken (tho no idea about when this broke exactly as I haven't checked it in years), everything else is still fine tho, I might try re-flashing it to update to the new majour resurrection remix when i have time and the will to backup and move everything, something could have corrupted or maybe an update broke it, no idea.
My phone reports resurrection remix 7.0.2 and Android 9.
Hope this is still helpful.

Hi everyone,
just now the Global Version of MIUI 13 with Android 12 have been released, there's also the version from Xiaomi.eu available.
I have been following the development a bit and i have a few questions being a rooted user.
- Obviously getting root again shouldn't be a problem with the latest releases of magisk which is flashed via fastboot (boot.img)
- TWRP is not yet able to access encrypted partition on android 12, thus the rom has to be installed via fastboot. Where else could this lead be a shortcoming? Are there alternatives?
I just don't want it to feel like a mistake to upgrade early. So i am looking for some experiences from other users.
Root will be no problem.
About encryption use adb sideload, fastboot, sd card, usb otg. Whatever you like.
Or wipe data and foash dfe zip. Restart to rom, restart recovery and data will be decrypted. Then flash rom you like from internal. But there is again problem where to put dfe.
just buy some chippest sd card for this just for flashing roms and your problem will be solved forever
do you have link?
Don't even bother flashing it or updating to it, it's infested with bugs and there are no performance or battery life improvements since it's just the initial release.
It is basically same with 12.5. It does not even have android 12 features that come stock with it. I tried it, only noteworthy change was the font change MiSans, other than that there was nothing lol.

No I already went back to crdroid lol.
I have struggled to find good info on backup and restore options. I would like to do a full phone backup directly to my computer. Any advice on the best method to do so? I am on Lineage 19-20220824-microG-Lemonade. It shows there are updates available, however this phone is in daily use so I don't want to risk so update-induced meltdown and would like to be ready with a good backup/recovery setup. I have been "using" seedvault with nextcloud but I don't trust it as it constantly throws errors, and I'm afraid if I were to try to restore from the seedvault backup and it were somehow corrupted I could be worse off than before.
Also, can I take the updates that are offered by the phone (OTA, I think) over the microg build or would I need to do a clean install of the latest microg ROM?
Thanks.
If anyone comes here, TWRP official doesn't work, but this does:
[RECOVERY][3.7.0-12.1][UNOFFICIAL][UNIFIED] TWRP with A12/A13 encryption support
This is an unofficial build of TWRP, based on the Android 12.1 branch, that supports encryption used by Android 12 and 13 ROMs. This build is tested on OP9 pro, but it was confirmed to work on regular OP9 too. As always I'm not responsible for...
forum.xda-developers.com
After getting a backup to my PC, I felt safe enough trying the update directly via the LineageOS system interface, and it appears to have worked fine.
Now I wonder whether I should wait to go from 19.1 to 20.0
