Heatsink installation broke my PX5 touchscreen - MTCD Android Head Units Q&A

System working perfectly prior to installing the heatsink.
Now touchscreen is completely unresponsive two out of three times after a system wakeup. But works perfectly every time after a reboot.

Hello, exactly the same was happening to my unit when I replaced the PX3 board with a PX5 board. The reason was that the board was not sitting very well on the connector. I had to remove the middle screw hole from the motherboard (the PX3 board had a middle screw, the PX5 doesn't), in order for the board to make proper connections. After I've done that, everythng worked.

Thanks very much. I'll try reseating the board tomorrow and report back.

Nah, tried reseating it multiple times, still no good.
Applied more force than I felt comfortable with, used compressed air to make sure everything was clear.
Since I installed the PX5 I've gotten vertical lines on the screen after boot or wakeup. That is another symptom of the board not sitting correctly.
It just seems strange that a heatsink would change the way the board sits in the socket. Maybe i should try taking it off again to see if that fixes it.

What other modifications did you do? I didn't change anything on the board and I haven't had any temperature problems so far (although I will only know for sure after summer).
In my case, the reason for the board not sitting correctly was also the screw on the motherboard (for the middle screw). Probably it was shorting something on the board, so I removed it (needed a soldering iron). To be sure I also placed some insulating tape under the board.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I had removed the centre screw and the post for it on the body of the unit before I installed it right back at the start.
But your post got me thinking and I went back in now and removed the screw in the top right-hand side of the PX5 board up near the socket. It's only small but it looked like it could have been blocking the board sitting in perfectly.
This has finally fixed the vertical lines issue which is great. But the touchscreen still does not work half the time, which is still incredibly annoying.
I had a go at removing the heatsink I had attached, but I apparently stuck it down very, very well. I'll need to go back at it with a heat gun in a few days.
Otherwise I might just spring for another coreboard, now that they have 4 gig of ram it might be a good upgrade.

Cracks are not always visible. But if they're not there, I'd suggest you open the back case and try to reseat the ribbon cables at the touchscreen PCB. While at it, check the flat silver cable connecting that board to the mainboard also. Make sure nothing is jarred loose by the drop.

thanx for responding...i did exactly what you said ..i disconnected both cables (silver and brown) and put them back..more than half of the screen started working, the other part was just dead and those parts didnt work even when i tilted the screen.. like 5 minutes later the entire screen is dead again......do you think its the digitizer?

Sorry for the late reply. I've run into this problem before. When you have a digitizer that works for a few minutes then stops as the tab warms up, (1) more likely than not, there's a crack somewhere or a tear on the ribbons, visible or not, or (2) the new screen boycotting the old firmware. No new screen points to faulty hardware. However, it doesn't hurt to eliminate possible software causes.
The best test I can think of at this point would be to first check the physical connections again (check the connectors and ribbon ends under a magnifying glass, make sure they aren't damaged, bent or stripped), then re-flash the firmware following instructions in another thread, then turn on "show touches" in settings. If you still see "ghost touches" after a few minutes, the digitizer is likely ass-kicked by the drop.
I've had a digitizer on a TF act "leisurely" because of a crack across the width of the bordering black strip that couldn't be detected with the naked eye because it severed the circuit on just the underside. The surface was totally smooth. As the crack spread, it became obvious.
If I had access to your glass, I could've tested for you. Too bad.

[Q] Screen stops working intermittently, seems to be hardware related, help?

So I've been having a ton of issues with my phone lately, to the point I can't use it anymore. I'll list them in case they may show what the problem is. First, the charging port went out. I swapped out for a new flex cable on ebay and all was well again. Next the speaker stopped working unless I would squeeze the bottom of the phone, and then stopped working completely (Not sure if this was the speaker itself or if it was making poor contact with the new flex cable.).
Up next, and the worst problem of all, is the screen stopped working intermittently. I seemed to be able to get it working better when I would squeeze the phone, which seemed strange to me. This kept happening until it stopped working altogether!
So, thinking it was the flex cable, I just swapped it for another new one from a different seller, and it still isn't working. If I reboot the phone the screen works perfectly fine unless I put light pressure on the back of the above the "s" in nexus, then the screen shuts off and won't come back on again until I restart the phone again. As soon as I reboot the phone the screen works great again until I tap that spot.
I'm a bit at a loss to what I should be looking for, or what I need to replace? Is there some sort of short? Is a connection poorly made? It's a brand new flex cable and the old one seemed to be doing the same, and I've double checked the connections and they seem to be fine.
If you have any ideas, I'm all ears, just about to tear apart the phone to check where it might be making shorts around that area! Thanks everyone!
Seemed to be an issue with the flex cable connecter to the motherboard. When I added pressure to the connector the screen would work, as I let off pressure the screen quit. I ended up adding a few layers of electrical tape to the back of the connector so when I put the backplate housing and cover back on it would add some pressure. Seems to be working great now (knock on wood).

Thats a common experience you had. The connection between the USB cable and the motherboard for some reason can go bad. I suspect overheating may be the primary cause. The careful placement of double stick electrica tape appears to help fix this problem. I had to do it myself. The speaker not working can be caused by poor connection to the USB flex cable. There is an excellent youtube by "LE55ONS" on the disassembly/assembley which shows everything in great detail. It's worth a look.
Glad you got everything working

Damaged daughterboard connector from mainboard. Data still recoverable?

Hi all,
A follow up to my enquiry here about a badly damaged phone: forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/transplanting-main-board-data-recovery-t3253789.
I ordered a second Nexus 5 with the intention of transplanting the first mainboard into the second body, only to discover the first motherboard has a damaged daughterboard connector from the initial accident. The daughterboard connector/pins (?) aren't attached to the mainboard anymore. Photos here (that's the disconnected socket/connector next to the board):
cl.ly/142v473d2s17
cl.ly/33461J0K1Q2d
cl.ly/2S190F1v2M2c
In spite of the missing socket, I actually tried connecting it to the rest of the phone and powering it on anyway - no luck however. Didn't budge after holding down the power button. I can confirm that the rest of the second phone works when I plugged it all back together with it's mainboard.
Questions then - is it possible for a professional (presumably) to reconnect this and get the board back up and running? Or is my motherboard and data completely gone at this point?
I realise the solution probably won't be cheap at this stage, however I really want to recover some of the data off that phone and I'm just hoping that's in some way shape or form possible.
Thanks for any advice. Having a bad run of luck and really hoping for a bit of a holiday miracle with this now...

Hi
Sorry for your problems. To help yourself understand how your Nexus 5 hardware is put together you should take a look at the youTube video posted by LE55ONS "Nexus 5 Teardown" -. Just do a search for LE55ONS in YouTube. He has posted many very well made videos on how to repair smartphones.
It will show you every aspect of the hardware.
I hope that helps you

Thanks but this doesn't really address what I've asked regarding the damaged connector.
I would say, in theory it should be possible to reattach that connector with the proper reflow equipment, but it rather depends on how much damage was done when it was pulled off the board. If it is just the solder that let go then not so bad, but if any of the copper pads/traces on the main board stayed attached to the connected when it got torn off then it becomes a much more difficult repair. The puzzling part is even with that connector removed you would think the main board would still be able to power up, with obviously the ports attached to the flex board not being available so that makes me wonder if perhaps other damage has been done to the main board? You could confirm this by seeing if can power up the other working Nexus with that same connector unplugged. If the other one powers up then that's a pretty strong indication you've got additional damage beyond just the torn off connector.

Oneplus One touchscreen not responding

Hello,
I recently replaced my oneplus one touchscreen myself with a replacement one I got from eBay. Now it stops responding when I turn my screen on and then after a about 20-30 seconds of hard swiping it starts responding and the touchscreen works as if everything is normal. Is this a known issue?
Well it would be more helpful if you give your current Android version, rooted or not and which firmware, might as well attach some screenshots here of about phone of your phone from settings
Hello,
My Android version is 5.1.1, not rooted . Here is a screenshot with rest of the details
Happened to me the second time I replaced my screen and sounds like the exact same issue. It was a grounding issue. When you took off the original parts, you should've noticed some chrome looking tape towards the top, under the motherboard. That was there to stop that main display flex wire from grounding out on the frame. I put a little piece of masking tape on the new assembly and it solved my issues. Hope this helps

Can you let me know where the chrome looking tape is? I am looking at this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/repair-guide-oneplus-one-disassembly-t2979351 and I think the area you mentioned is showing under Step 16 and before Step 17?
Ok I followed the solution listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/fixing-ghost-touch-grounding-issue-hint-t2951000. So I put masking tape on the affected parts. The problem has definitely become less prevalent where the screen wouldn't respond for minutes to now sometimes the phone doesn't respond for about 10 - 20 seconds and then starts responding again. But once it does start working. It works continuously and it seems to me like something is trying to charge up and once charged up it works. So I don't think I have reached the final solution any other ideas? Should I just try heavier electrical tape instead of masking tape?

MTCD screen is displayed mirrored

I am facing a very strange bug since yesterday on my MTCD KGL.
The screen is mirrored, but the touch panel is not. So everything looks like seeing it through a mirror, but the touch panel is still in the correct orientation.
So e.g. a "Cancel" button is displayed as "lecnaC" and is on the right, but I still have to touch on the left to push it.
Even the boot logo and the recovery are mirrored.
WTF???
Do you have an idea what is going on with my unit?
Damn, this thing is not really usable anymore.
Just another "cheap" China product for the bin.
I should have better lit some cigars with the three 100€s...
So out of nothing it mirrord en before not?
Then it's software problem so fixable... flash MCU, flash image.
Everything comes form China nowadays, besides you know the risk if you want to buy cheap unit...

Yeah, did that already. Didn't help. That's why I'm like wtf...
Meanwhile I found out, that when I'm playing with the hardware power button, pressing it until reboot, that's flashing three times, then randomly pressing it short or long, I can change the mirroring from "flip over short side" to "flip over long side". But that's even worse. Did not manage to get it to correct orientation.
I know sometimes you win, but this time I seem to lose heavily.
Thanks pal.
This happened to mine and i couldn't understand what happened...tried every setting and a factory reset with no luck. And then one day it fixed itself. HOWEVER i did read on another forum a display cable comes loose inside and causes this. Just need to open it up and re secure the display cable...
This happened to my mtcb joying unit. I asked the manufacturer and they said it's like the graphics chip.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Normally these use a long ribbon cable to connect the internal boards together and then another to connect the display board to the LCD.
On my last unit the LCD cable was pinched by the metal case, causing random display issues.
Taking it apart and readjusting the cable so it was not pinched solved the problems.
Most manufacturers put the ribbon right at the bottom of the case, so any pressure on the bottom of the LCD can cause issues.

Sorry bro,
I have no solution.
It disappeared after a few week.
Sorry.
