Camera2 API support on the Samsung J3 (2017) - Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) Questions & Answers

Hi!
I'm interested in more advanced video recording apps like "Filmic Pro" which need a certain level of Camera2 API support to function properly. Could someone with a J3 (2017) please run this free app "Camera2 probe" and tell me if the hardware level support category comes out as "Level 3", "Full", "Limited" or "Legacy", maybe post a screen grab?
Cheers!

Hey, thanks a lot, good to see that their super-budget phone has at least "Limited". While isn't enough for Filmic Pro, other manual camera apps work fine with "Limited". Cheers!

[Q] Custom IR - Infrared apps (Similar to PEEL Remote Control)

Hello,
Just bough myself the amazing Galaxy Note 10, and it has "Peel Smart Remote" built-in app.
This app works fine with a lot of TV brands, but I believe it could be even better.
Are there any other apps that can control that IR emitter as well?
I want to be able to control my cable TV decoder, as well as other devices in my house, that are NOT available on peel.
As I'm trying to learn android dev (very beginning yet), I would love to know how to write my own app, so I could try to write something useful.
However, there are NO DOCS AT ALL about it! Not on Android SDK, not on Samsung SDK. No API related, absolutely nothing.
Looking at Samsung developer forums, their oficial position about the subject is that "there is no information about it, that's all we known".
Well, if "Peel Smart Remote" app is able to control that infrared chip, it MUST have a way for us (developers) to do the same!
Can anyone tell me/us how to start?
I don't know, maybe a little reverse engineering in peel's source code to find out how peel works, and reproduce it!
I believe I'm not the only one that is looking for some different uses for the IR Led Emitter on the Galaxy Note 10, so let's try to figure out something!
Thanks!

Hummmm now that was weird...
I just downloaded that touchsquid demo, and they have A LOT of limitation on the demo version: "you cannot try the samsung TV in this demo version". Also, you can't download it from market/play, you download the INSTALLER from play, and have to allow "allow other source" to install it.
I mean, if peel is obscure, touchsquid is even more!
What are they afraid of?
nope!
Demo mode has limited function because of license...send me a pm arr arr!
You install the .apk from market, And then You install the help And settings apk. These two are separat. No Idea why.
The developers of touchsquid are extremely responsive, I paid the £11 for the Samsung tablet version, it nicely controls my UK sky+, Samsung tv and hdmi switcher "straight out of the box" and after a couple of email exchanges my Phillips DVD system, they responded to emails the same day and in both cases updated their device database with correct ir codes within 1 to 2 days. Bearing in mind how poor Peel its for non American users, this it's the only alternative at present, it's a bit of a niche due to the general lack of devices with an ir emitter so any attempts of the developer community to make one would be keenly anticipated

I wish Logitech would get in on this. I LOVE my harmony one remote, and would happily pay for an app that would let me do the same with my tab, even if it is a spendy app.

That's strange - stupid Logitech! I found that the best IR software for Android is the one that comes with the Sony Tablets. It has a great database of existing devices, but it also allows the IR blaster to learn commands from existing controls (ie I have an infra-red controlled light switch which it works with).
I imagine if there is an API for the IR Blaster someone could program such features in.....it's frustrating that Peel doesn't work with Sky though. I might try the suggestion above myself.

Any chance you could post links to the Sony apk and to that IR switch that allows the Note to learn commands? That would be great!

Just sent. License from who? Samsung? I mean.. Do we need to have a licensed remote control to work with Samsung (or other) devices?
Or is the license about using their trademark?
I mean, (if we got that API), can't we develop apps to control Samsung (and other) devices?
Can't we share them for free on Google Play? I can't think a way that this would cause financial losses for them!

Actually, Galaxy Tab/Note only have IR Emitter.
It doesn't have a receiver, that's why we can't have a "IR Code Learning" with our Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note.
Are there any developers here who can help me disassembly existing APKs, and try to find out how to control that IR chip?
I never worked with Java before, only learned to disassembly compiled C/C++ applications...

As said before it's merely a blaster - not a receiver. Touchsquid is great but sadly the ui is seriously lacking polish!!
Yeah, yeah, I get that the Note 10.1 does not have a IR receiver. If you read the quote I list, a poster claims to have a switch that allows the sony app to learn. Hence, I asked for a link to the app and the switch.

No he doesn't - because that was me who said that. In fact, what I said was there is on the Sony S Tablet, the program is capable of learning commands BECAUSE the Sony has an IR receiver built in. Which doesn't help us because the Note 10.1 doesn't (which I have found out since making that post). I never said it would work on the 10.1!

Well the Note hasnt a dedicated IR receiver, but maybe the camera could just do the same job. You can see the IR diode of any remote flashing if you point at the camera whilst using the cam app. Anyway there are already tons of IR codes available on the web, all we need is an app which is way more customable than the Peel app.

What is really a "IR Code"?
Is that about the frequency of IR Led Blinking?
For example, on PEEL you have to choose your device, than you can customize key codes.
Example: My LG TV: Vol-up=326, Vol-down=327.
Peel doesn't support it, but let's say it DOES, and I choose "Samsung TV", but customize the Vol-Down code to "326".
Will it work on my LG TV? Or are there any other variables that intereferes on it?
I mean, if the only variable is that "code", than we could make a "Brute force" trying codes from 1 to 6556, and pause it when something happens to our TV or any other device, is that right?
About the camera working as a IR Receptor, that really would makes sense IF camera could take enough fps to decode the frequency.
That's something to investigate.
Are the programmers in "Android Development" aware of this thread? Someone with a little more technical information could add more to this thread (I can't post there, unfortunally).
Here's a good explaination of codes: ww w. hifi-remote.c om/infrared/IR-PWM.shtm l.
Some raw LG codes are here: files.remotecentral.c om/library/3-1/lg/2008_television/index.ht ml.
For the moment i have no idea how the 'code' number in the Peel remote is linked to the raw code. Illhave a look there tomorrow
Does anyboda have new informations regarding a infrared remote APP?
It would be great if I could remote control my LED Stripes with the Galaxy Note 10.1. There are some similar apps like IRDroid but all are using an external device.
Would it be possible to use the integrated infrared interface in android APP?
I copied the following response from Samsung's developer forum. Samsung will not release the API for the IR blaster on Galaxy Tab 2 series.

Here is another forum post, I noticed that the username of the last response is "TouchSquid". They must have either talked to someone higher up at Samsung or figured it out on their own since they now offer an app.
developer.samsung.com/forum/board/thread/view.do?boardName=GeneralB&messageId=140654
This lack of an SDK is both bizarre and confusing. Both of the available apps - Peel and Touchsquid - are useless for different reasons. If you could combine them both then they might add up to a useful app but separately they're useless. I've tried and uninstalled both.
The thing that's really needed is someting I've been after for a long time and I'm surprised no-one has yet thought of it - a combined IP Remote. All the Hifi and electronics manaufacturers have their own apps and SDKs to control their equipment over wifi and each one needs to be installed separately. Imagine a single interface that could talk to all of the various IP controls. You wouldn't need an IR port then, just a set of IP controllable equipment.
It could be extended to incorporate things like Mediaportal or XBMC, WDTV live, AppleTV? - basically anything with a web based interface and an SDK. Build it so that each remote is added as a plugin and it can be expanded as each new device comes along. It would be the ultimate Home Cinema remote!
Someone get on it!

[GUIDE] Rooting the Elephone P8 3D with TWRP

After reading so many useful threads on this forum, I figured it became time to share my experiences with a very new phone with others. I used the work of others, so maybe nothing new, but even so, it took some time to find all info and adapt the TWRP imade. Using the information here and my customized TWRP image, you should be able to root this phone very fast.
I assume some experience with booting into recovery, unlocking bootloaders and flashing. Please be aware of the risks of doing this and be aware that it will void your warranty
The steps
A-Make a good backup of firmware and data
1) First step has to be to save the existing software. I used the SP Flash tool to do so. Be VERY careful with this tool, as it is very easy to brick your phone already in this first step. The tool has an innocent looking "Download only" buttom, do not be deceived, as this button is UPLOADING to the phone!!! Use the Read back function and read from 0 until the first 3.8Gb. If all goes well, you do not need this backup. Unfortunately I do not (yet) have the scatterfile for this MT6750T phone. You need the scatterfile to be able to download the different partitions. Anyway see: [TUT]MTK Android (Sp flash tool ) tutorial on XDA Developers
2) Install Magisk man from googleplay, run it and choose download Magisk zipfile. Save this file in your (unencrypted!) SD card
3) Backup your Userdata. A way to do this is the built-in Recovery rom. It will also backup properly if your phone is encrypted . You can backup to the SDcard or to an OTG usb disk.
B-Start the actual hack
4) Unlock your bootloader look here: how-to-unlock-your-android-phones-bootloader-the-official-way in short:
a. Make yourself developer (settings/phone/tap the image info 6x)
b. In the developer tab choose: “Allow unlocking the bootloader”
c. Shutdown phone
d. Press and hold Volume UP and ON for five seconds
e. Choose the bootloader by using the Volume Up key
f. Press Volume down to activate
g. Connect your PC to the phone
h. Start CMD on the PC and browse to the directory where ADB is installed (e.g. C:\adb)
i. Type: fastboot oem unlock
j. You need to confirm by using the Volume Up key. YOUR USERDATA WILL BE ERASED
5) Flash the customized TWRP recovery image for the Elephone P8 3D. I made this rom using Carlivs image kitchen, using TWRP 3.0.3 for OPPO FS1. Unfortunately, this did TWRP worked fine if you booted it with: fastboot boot recovery.img, but when I flashed it, Touch did not work. Luckily, somebody found out what the problem is and he wrote a complicated, but complete story how to fix it and it works now!! See github.com minimal-manifest-twrp READ_ME_FIRST issues thanks to user “LosTigeros” for his post. The TWRP image can be found at Custom TWRP
Type: fastboot flash recovery twrp-P8-3d(patched).img
6) Test TWRP by switching off your phone and the reboot into recovery (press volume up and on at the same time and choose “recovery”. Do NOT choose the option to install the TWRP app!! While you are at it, use backup to backup all the partitions.
C- Rooting the phone
7) From TWRP, install the magisk man zip file
8) Test if your phone works and if you have root access
9) Reboot the phone into the bootloader
D-Lock the bootloader again
10) Lock the bootloader: fastboot oem lock (your user data will be deleted again)
11) Switch off your phone and the reboot into recovery (press volume up and on at the same time and choose “recovery”)
12) Use the option “wipe” in TWRP to wipe Dalvik cache, cache and user data. If you skip this step, your phone will continue to boot into the recovery mode ….
13) You should now restore your user data
14) Your phone should work again now and should be routed….
E-Current developments (June 1st 2018):
- The stock ROM and stock Recovery were extracted by ProfessorKNOX and uploaded to MegaNZ (see post further down)
- There is currently a scatter file available for the P8_3D which seems to be working (see link further down)
- As far as I am aware, so far no newer TWRP files than the TWRP 3.0 I posted have been succesfully tested yet
- Finally, Elephone P8 3D is now supported by the universal Coolpad Toolkit of [email protected] This Coolpad Toolkit can now be used by any Elephone P8 3D owner to make rooting easier. Please make sure that you know what you do when you use the tool and ALWAYS make backup copies of your full ROM before changing ANYTHING. I have NOT tested this toolkit myself Link to coolpadtoolkit/
Good luck! Paul

Elephone P8 3D versus Takee 1 (both are Eye-Tracking phones)
Paul, give us a written and video review of the new Elephone P8 3D, please. Where have you bought it and the price. What are your impressions of this device? Does the Eye-Tracking work fine in tridimensional maps, photos and videos? Does it run 360 degree videos? Is there a native app for subscription to a chinese Hub of 3D videos and 3D games? Are there any bugs?
For the Elephone P8 3D it is crucial to identify and test all available 3D apps (video players, 360° video players, cameras, photo galleries, etc.). Many apps have their own built-in 3D libraries but may rely on kernel support. However, a few of them do not rely on kernel 3D libraries. Do these 3D apps have a similar performance on the Holographic-like effect to the native 3D videoplayer app of Elephone P8 3D? Give us your list of approved apps, please.
Have you tried Facebook 3D, Youtube 3D, Phereo 3D, 3DSteroid, TriDef 3D Gallery, sVIEW, Eassee 3D, iPlay SBS, Magic VR Video Player, VR Media Player, QuickPic, etc.?
Is your device a good competitor to Takee 1, the first 3D holographic smartphone with Eye-Tracking? Is the Elephone P8 3D much better than ZTE Axon 7 Max or Doogee Y6 Max 3D?
Sorry for this long qwery. It may help those willing to invest their money on a 3D device.
Hi Paul,
your post about twrp for P8 3D came YUST IN TIME
I received my P8 3D yesterday and I will try your approach and keep you updated!
Questions:
- How did you come to the conclusion to download exactly 3.8GB
- Did you have to enter addresses in SP Flash tool, and if so, which ones did you enter?
BTW. what a pitty that Elephone didn't integrate on the back two camaras in landscape orientation and eye-distance to enable the phone making 3D photos and videos
Thanks a lot for your effort and support!

We need to get a database for Elephone P8 3D because the components and drivers for the several revisions of this device may differ. Under-the-hood disparities may affect the behavior of ROMs.
A nice hardware diagnostics tool is the Device Info HW app by Andrey Efremov. Therefore, I request that you install the app and select Upload device information at the Info Center option in order to feed the Device Info HW database by Andrey Efremov. Then check the database for comparison with other Elephone P8 3D devices.
This is a great help for developers and will ensure that your device is supported too!

I have had the Elephone P8 3D for just over a week now. Bought off of Gearbest for around $170 US.
It will not play 3D via web or youtube but will if located on phone. The app on the phone is 3D Media by K3DX.
Unlike the HTC EVO 3D where you can play youtube 3D's and some online 3D service.
I have found a few online 3D movie streams that allow downloads and then you can playback the images.
I have tried locating any new roms, but luck as of yet.
In Display Settings, they have 2 settings, 3D Service settings (no idea what this does) and View point settings
I have T-mobile, so putting a sim card in only gave me 2G., but, the wifi is has both 2 and 5 g settings.
I own a LG V30, so I keep pressing the finger sensor to power on or off the device...
I would like to watch streaming 3D viewing and not to load it into memory cards.
I will try to do the above to have an extra phone added to the mix

Hi Yuri,
Thanks for your reaction. I will be happy to try to answer some of your questions in the coming weeks, but I have not been able to test it all. At the moment the 3D image app is all I tested so far. That looks very nice, but that's all it is. I had hopped the phone would support making your own 3D pictures, but that is not the case. The option to blur your foto is nice. Further, the memory size, the speed, the fingerscanner and the price is what made me decide to buy it.
So happy to test it further, but need some time to do it..
Best regards,
Paul

SnapTube is an excellent app to locate and download 3D videos.
https://www.snaptubeapp.com/
There is missing information on LCM and Modem. However, the data that you provided on components and drivers is enough to identify suitable clones of Elephone P8 3D on the Device Info HW database. If there is a custom ROM of Android 7.1 or Android 8.1 for the best clone than it can be adjusted to Elephone P8 3D.
Nonetheless, a few more samples of Elephone P8 3D are needed for the Device Info HW database.

Hi Professor,
The partition with the system ROM on it is 61071360 1024byte blocks large. The userdata partition comes at the end and has 57237487 blocks. So I figured if I save 3833873 blocks, than I should have saved everything that matters. So I entered address 0 and address 3925885925 (converted to hex) in the SP tool and it gave me 3.8GB of data. Not that I needed it, because after I unlocked the bootloader, using TWRP (before flashing it), I was able to save all partitons again.
Best to save as much as you can, to prevent bricking of your device...
Good luck and sorry that I am not allowed to post the TWRP link yet, but I am sure you were able to get it anyway.

Paul

SnapTube is an excellent app to locate and download 3D videos.

So the stuff I sent was fine. Good. No idea if it went through or not. Glad to help.

Paul, why can't we thank your posts? It is weird...
The easiest way to find the Partition Info in a very neat format is by installing the Device Info HW app. Then select the Partitions tab, take a screenshot and post it here, please.
AIDA64 is another good app but the info on Partitions is not so neat.

Hi Yuri,
The partitions tab gives exactly the information from my earlier post.
Probably you cannot thank my posts because I am a junior member (less than 10 posts.....)
Best regards,

Paul. I now see 2 P8 3D phones. Ours are up I think. I sent mine a few hours ago and you just added yours.
I think we are ok.
By the way,
I bought it at the official Elephone store for 110 Euro. Had to pay a lot of import tax, which made it a lot less interesting price.
Best regards,
Paul

Dimenco is glad to see the test version of the WeShare3D Android app working on 3D smartphones! Many 3D videos can be downloaded from the website WeShare3D.

@pdegraaf do you know the dutch Dimenco 3D technology company? It is a spin-off from Philips Electronics. It was bought by K3DX in 2016.
Regarding ROM development for Elephone P8 3D, my suggestion is to enlist the help of @Feligres. He became an expert on MT6750T and developed many ROMs for Doogee Y6 Max from source. Feligres is now turning his attention to Bluboo S8 and UHANS Max 2 (both Android 7.0 and MT6750T clones). His profile and outstanding work can be found in the spanish forum MovilesDualSim. Check all four tabs of Feligres' profile.

I have sent a message to Feligres with the link to this post. I saw he has logged in a few times today, hopefully he'll pop back and catch that message.
Fingers crossed.
I have tried Eassee 3D and seems to work well. All the others not so good. No 3D selection for glass free.
A question, in the Display settings, they have 2 choices for 3D. The one I question is 3D Service Settings(ON). The other I think I know is View Point Settings which seems to be 1

Camera Depth Capabilities

Hey guys
I'm an android developer and I need to know if this phone is implementing the depth module from the camera 2 api.
Is someone available to install a very simple apk (attached) that lists the camera capabilities and post the screenshot with the output?
It would mean a lot, thanks.

ARCore support

Please could anybody test if ARCore is supported for Poco F2 pro?
Just try to install ARCore from google play.
There is only Redmi K30 on compatibility list from google there:
https://developers.google.com/ar/discover/supported-devices
Thanks.
Play services for vr is installed on my device. Not sure what to do now and I can install Google vr service thing. I don't have a headset though anything else I can check for you?
Poco F2 Pro is compatible with all AR and VR services from Google.
Thanks both of U.

Ah sorry, I must have missed that check when I said that last time. It seems depth API is not currently supported on the Poco F2 Pro.
We'll have to wait and see if they bring support for it.

Thanks for your answer !
So google list about depth compatibility is up to date ?
I've seen an article about depth for allmost phones with a single camera, so why is there so few models which can handle depth data ?
If I have to choose a recent phone with depth support ( and with API 29, Android 10) , do you know which one to choose ?
Thanks in advance !

Normally the google list about depth compatibility is always up to date from what I know of.
But I'm confident that depth API will come to Poco F2 Pro soon enough, as the Redmi K30 Pro (so the Chinese version) is listed as compatible. I think it's only a matter of official support from Google for the global version.
As you said, pretty much all Android (10) phones could be compatible with this, but it seems they do need some sort of official support from Google to turn that API on?
I didn't find any info about depth API on the Poco F2 Pro, I only tried a few apps to check, and Google's ARCore Depth Lab app is listed as incompatible on my phone when I open a link to the Play Store. So this led me to the conclusion that it's currently unsupported for now.
As I'm not a huge user of AR, nor a developer of such apps, I can't really recommend any phone that has this technology. You should make some research for yourself. You could also wait a few weeks and see if Google lists the Poco F2 Pro as compatible with the soon-to-be-released Android 11 coming early September.

Update on that last message, after checking Google's ARCore list I was wrong about depth support for the Chinese version. The Redmi K30 Pro is only listed as ARCore supported, but nothing said about Depth API support.
Gotta wait and see I suppose..

As far as I know, almost all android 10 devices can be compatible with ARcore, but not all phones compatibles with ARcore are gonna be compatible with Depth API.
This is because Depth API is a very processor heavy API, and Google needs to review every phone's cpu performance, as well as it's motion sensors performance before giving them the necessary certification for enabling Depth API.
But Poco F2 pro is a very powerful device, so I'm sure it is gonna be updated soon to support depth api. I'm waiting for the same on my Mi10 5g.

I have it installed, yes
Depth API works on POCO F2 PRO without root using VirtualXposed, or if you got root and want to modify fingerprint of ArCore app, you can do this also.
Here's an Youtube video about this:
* don't forget to use https://repo.xposed.info/module/com.bigsing.changer because Spoof My Device isn't compatible to Android 10+
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwY6VH0lcos
Here's a DEMO of it on POCO F2 PRO: https://youtu.be/-2unzupWL9s
OP: Please edit first post and add this, because this is the first thread that appears on Google about this.
do I need to have Gcam to be able to use it like you on this video? I have ARCore installed with my custom ROM that I use
So can I like bribe someone at google to finally flip the switch on the depth API? The method posted above stopped working since the update to Android 11, and it's ridiculous to have concrete proof it works just fine on the hardware, but have it disabled on google's side :I
It seems like proper depth support was added today! Took them a while but at least it's here, and all the depth enabled apps show up in the store and install as they should

Camera2API Support

Hello,
does this phone support the Camera2API module? I frequently use OpenCamera and FilmicPro on my Honor 10 so I was wondering if I can do the same with Honor 20. If possible, could someone send screenshots from the 'Camera2 API Probe' and 'Filmic Pro Evaluator' apps?
Thank you.
Ok, so I got ahold of this phone and I tested out what it can and can't do regarding these functions. The result are are not terrible but not great either.
Camera2API
Here is the full report from the Camera2 API Probe. It's hard to read compared to the Android app, but here is my summary: It supports resolutions up to 48MP. It supports manual exposure (ISO/shutter). White balance too. The biggest caveat: no RAW support. You can't shoot in RAW with 3rd party applications like OpenCamera. Manual exposure works, you can also use the wide angle camera with manual exposure controls.
FilmicPro / OpenCamera
Here are the screenshots from the FilmicPro Evaluator app for all of the cameras available. In this case most of the features are supported. The EIS works only up to [email protected] though. You can't shoot 120fps videos with third party applications. The biggest caveat - no Cinematography Kit (aka LOG profile) support. I'm guessing this is related to the RAW format compatibility but I don't actually know. Same goes for OpenCamera, the color profile setting isn't available for video mode. Also, the EIS doesn't seem to work on OpenCamera for some reason.
(here starts the rant)
Honestly it's not bad (better than the P30 for example) but I don't understand why they disabled the RAW shooting option. I don't actually understand why they would limit the API at all for a phone at this price range. Especially when my Honor 10 (which was relased 1 year earlier) has this option. My guess is that it messes with their ****ty marketing gimmicks like 'Ultra-sharp 48mp mode' etc. This phone is good, but Huawei always makes a lot of specific enhancements with their software, and thus the options for customisation are limited. It's not a bad thing for "regular" customers that don't care about features like this, but I think they should allow the enthusiast to do their thing if they want to. It's going downhill since they stopped giving out bootloader unlock codes. While Huawei makes good phones, I feel like they are going more the closed-up iPhone way, and unfortunately this isn't something that suits me. I'll probably look somewhere else for my next phone - something like OnePlus (if the situation doesn't change).
If you have any other questions about the camera, or phone in general, feel free to ask.
