Hello. I use Samsung Captivate smartphone.
When I chose "wipe data" in CWM menu (while installing new rom), it does not wipe it... does anyone know why?
thank you.
wipe data, wipe dalvik cache, wipe everything just to be safe
and when you boot your phone, do a factory reset

What do you mean does wipe? How's your new rom installation result? For custom rom it is needed to wipe otherwise you'll get a boot loop

New ROM is working well, but sometimes it is working slow... and sometimes Dialer is exiting when i want to type digits.
What cwm are you using? I'm on an atrix but I know some cwm on the atrix do not wipe properly and we have to use fastboot to wipe. Not sure how that works on your device.

CwM is: Dark Core Recovery v3.0.2.8x
My phone is Samsung Galaxy Ace.
1. If a phone is running stock ROM and unrooted, how can I wipe the dalvik cache?
Does the 'wipe cache partition' in recovery refer to the Dalvik cache? Does it
clean the Dalvik cache?
2. Are there other caches in my phone that needs 'cleaning' or is Dalvik the only cache in there?
Thank you!
Well, I'm not sure, but I think that you need root access to can clean dalvik

Why do you need to clear the cache? I think you need a custom recovery and maybe root also. I could be wrong.

Dalvik cache is in advanced menu, in recovery. Maybe you need root, dont know since i first rooted

There are basically 2 different caches that should be wiped when you are flashing between ROM's (or experiencing issues), the cache and the Dalvik cache. They are accessed from your recovery method (you need root) and depending which one you are using they are accessed differently, the 2 most famous (imo) are clockword and AmonRa. Now, if you are not rooted then the only way to clear your cache is by factory resetting your phone (which will erase everything). I know this clears your data and settings but not sure if it clears all the caches...
battery running out fastly

No need to format system
For wiping, Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache partition and then wipe dalvik cache (under advanced menu). It may not all be necessary but I find many recommending all three with a new rom.
Just wondering if wiping Dalvik from recovery when flashing a rom serves any purpose if one is running ART? I just did it when I updated from Bigxie's 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 and everything was fine, but was just curious. Thanks.

wiping dalvik when flashing a rom serves no purpose period. when you flash a rom, it automatically wipes dalvik(or ART in this case) and cache. so if you go and wipe it, you are doing it a second time for no reason.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'm a noob to rooting and flashing. I installed franco kernel, but it was not for me. So I decided to restore my twrp nandroid backup. Should I have factory reset phone before restore? will there be files from previous version left over? Many thanks, any help will be much appreciated.

Twrp is the latest update from play store not sure which number. I tried Franco but seemed slightly unstable so tried elementalx, but no improvement on battery so decided to go back to stock kernel for now, but I was curious, should I have wiped the entire phone before I restored?every time I restore is it creating multiple partitions or files? still getting to grips with the beautiful world of android coming from the jail of Apple.
Perform a wipe And then restore the Backup. It will be fine When you open TWRP the Version is shown up in the headline

NOT in bootloader as you modified the system and probably will get a brick or crashing the phone. Format all partitions except EFS and SD storage in TWRP. Then restore the backup
