i think galaxy r has a weak DSP because it records 720p video and doesn't play 1080p videos and i think even 720p playback is limited to [email protected]/4 ref frames.
here is a 720p mp4 avc [email protected] sample for you to try and see if it works in stock player:

https://rapidshare.com/files/3012087529/720p_avc_high_4.1_cabac_4_ref_frames.mp4
the samples are only 2 mb, so please try them out in stock player and tell me the result.
thanx in advance
1) Why do you have to use a stock player if you can choose full HW-accelerated: Dice or MX player?
2)I have S2 - I can't really see the difference between 720p and 1080p on such small screen (4'3") and I don't think any human eye would see it

stock player also does hw acceleration, and if a dual core phone doesnt play 1080p video, then at least it should have full 720p support
yes but stock player doesn't play all video formats the two players above do.
BTW. these samples are far away from HQ-quality, especially divine enrique is extremely pixelated I don't think it'll make any difficulty for SGR, but let's wait and see.

stock player doesnt play all formats because it does hw decoding only while mx and dice can do both hw and sw decoding which uses cpu and drains battery much faster than hw
and it is not about quality(bit rate), what matters is resolution(720p) and codec settings([email protected] frames)
I tried to play these 2 videos..
stock player was unable to play both the videos..
but. mx player with fast sw decoding played both clips very well...

what??? i cant believe it, so i guess max hw decoding support is 720p avc [email protected]/4 frames like this sample:
https://rapidshare.com/files/2823428502/720p_avc_high_3.1_cabac-4_ref_frames.mp4
and i guess the same goes for galaxy s advance which records 720p and doesn't play 1080p

The video is a dvd rip movie and a mkx format (i guess, though not sure abt the format) and apprx 1.7GB. When i tried playing through stock app, it didnt played.
When i tried using mx and dice, they played but a bit laggy.
but when i used xplayer, its more laggy
and upon using hardware decoder in mx,dice its unable to play
is there any solution play such video without any lag on our R ??

this phone doesn't play anything in stock player(hardware decoding) above 720p [email protected]/3 ref frames, you can download media info to know the specs of the videos you want to play:
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download
i guess if you want play anything above that smoothly using CPU( software decoding), you should use NEON optimized codecs for the player you installed like mx neon codecs from here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.ffmpeg.v7_neon&feature=more_from_developer
but, you should install mx player first

Mine too apart from some AC3/5.1 codecs is cannot play the audio, I at least get a picture on everything I have thrown at it. Your video must be an obscure codec of some sort.

It would be interesting to know which codecs are used.
Maybe the OP could find out and post? I use MediaInfo on pc to see details but Potplayer play everything anyway on pc.
I wonder if mxplayer will work with it?
BS Player (free) is also a good program to use for .mkv files as it has more audio codecs then some other players.

It plays every .mkv player alright BUT it cannot play 10bit hd mkv videos and other players play it with some stuttering. The best you can get is BSPlayer but it also cannot play it as smoothly as it does 8bit videos. I, personally, convert my anime to 8bit beforehand.
I use MX Player and it plays everything I threw at it even 10bit MKV 1080p stuff. Though 10bit files stutter. I have to use the software renderer in mxplayer because for some reason the HW one will work with 8bit files, but only show a black screen with 10bit. The HW+ renderer doesn't work very well at all on 10.1 so I just stick with software rendering for everything. My favorite feature about mxplayer is that the embedded fonts in the subs and their positions is preserved so it's like watching on my PC using mplayerhc. I haven't tried any other players yet because I don't think I need to at the moment. The only thing it doesn't play are MKVs with DTS tracks. Licensing issues made them remove it .
If the HW renderer would work on 10bit files I'd buy the adfree version in a heartbeat.
+1 MX Player
it works fine on many videos playing.
Hey there,
I mainly use my tab for videos and ebooks, and i faced problems in running some mkv's.
basically i was trying to play an anime video by coal girls but the player did not play it.
These are 720p videos with flac audio.
Also happens with videos by re-packers like horrible subs and gotwoot...
I know that the tab can play 720p mkv's watched a lot of 720p movies on it flawlessly. But then why does it fail to run these.
P.S. : I also tried mxplayer but it plays the video on s/w decoder and that too very poorly even after enabling multi core decoding for s/w decoder.
Thanks in advance.

I was hoping that someone had experienced it before and tried a custom ffmpeg i.e custom codecs to solve the problem.

Or you can use splashtop 2 (free on market) to stream the video to the tab... Works perfectly for those who don't want to convert tons of videos...
Final conclusion : There seems to be a problem with the native h/w rendering capabilities...so no software can help it..
720p mkv + flac audio or 10 bit 720p videos are not playable natively mostly due to the poor gpu, and poor performance with s/w decoders.
I use BS player. It plays everything, using H/W decoder. Plays local, or off the network.
Use the ARMv7 version, and also download the BS hardware decoder, it is vastly improved over the stock or AOSP one.

Installed bs player free + arm v7 vfp cpu from market, but it still plays the video using s/w decoder with terrible frame rates. Frame dropping option also dosen't help. And when i choose h264 hi10 to be played on h/w decoder , there is black screen with only audio.
Try the sample which i have uploaded in post 3 and post the results. I'm on stock rom so maybe cm/aosp plays it better. If so i may install a custom rom..
not possible to play 10 bit videos at the moment
So i finally dug around the forums myself and realized that there is no android device that can play 10 bit encoded videos at the moment, not even tegra 3.......
source : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425664
At the moment, 10 bit encoding i fairly new and requires much more power than ur 8 bit mkv's which were used to have earlier.
So basically our tab can play 8 bit 1080p videos flawlessly, but fails to do so for a 10 bit 720p video on h/w decoding i.e ur stock samsung player will refuse to play it and all the players that u will try will play it on s/w decoder no matter what u try and yet u'll get very bad frame rates.
SO the solution is to :
1) re encode the videos, which did'nt work for me cuz i lose the subtitles while converting(some error)
2) can stream using splashtop2 ( free in play store) which is okay but need to have very high net speeds..... :/
If u cant play ur vid's properly, first see the details if they are 10 bit or hi10p if yes try the above.
Cheers
Hello everyone,
I have a few questions regarding 4K videos. I tried playing a 4K H265 10bit video on the phone using the native Sony Video app and, although it did play, it was slow as heck. Does the phone support such videos natively (i.e. Hardware Accelarated playback)? Is it an issue of the app itself? Since almost all 4k content, with or with HDR/10bit, is in H265 are we limited to Youtube and Amazon for 4K playback? Do I have to transcode all my 4K Blu-Ray movies to H264 in order to play them? Are there any third party players (e.g. bsplayer) that can play 4k videos (and utilize the phone's 4k resolution, not just play them in 1080p). Thank you all for your time.
I downloaded a 4k test sample encoded in x265 and played it with MX player app with hardware acceleration.
Worked perfectly. Smooth as butter.

use mx player
Thanks a lot for your time. It seems that mx player does not use the phone's native 4K resolution though and displays a 1920x1080 image so there is no point in using it. My question is whether a video player app exists, besides Sony's native one, that is able to use the phone's 4K resolution, not just play 4K videos.

Kot5nik, in my opinion, changing the resolution that android runs is not the proper way to go. Since XZ Premium is a device that supports 4k/HDR i shouldn't have to resort to "adb" to watch a 4k video in another app. Plus, by doing that, battery drain increases a bit, phone dialer app does not work, app switching does not show thumbnails etc.

FartyParty, I stand corrected. You are absolutely right. I took screenshots of both MX and Sony apps and the look identical. Only one difference though. It seems that MX Player doest not utilize HDR. There is a noticeable difference in contrast. You can see the attachments if you want to.

Here is what i found from testing the device for 4K HDR videos
the device can and will play 4K H265 10bit and even HDR videos but there are things that need to be done to play perfectly
first you need to check for the containers to be mkv or mp4
second using sony app will not allow to play surround sound file like dts, ac3, AAC 5.1 or AAC 7.1
third which i think is very odd and stupid from sony is that how such a powerful device can't play mkv with AAC sound track no matter what stereo or surround.
The trick for this to use software where they can switch container without the need for converting the whole file from mkv to mp4.
Hi everyone,
I have to also agree with @Liltman and say that the MX Player does play video content in 4k however there is a very noticeable difference between the stock Sony album player and the MX player.
Sadly the Sony video player doesn't support truehd aac files so the video will play flawlessly without the sound :crying:
The MX Player on the other hand WILL play the sound but the quality of the video seems to take a small hit as it's not as vibrant as the Sony album player. This is because MX Player supports 4k but not HDR
I hope that Sony added codecs to make TrueHD sound files compatible with the Sony gallery player on Oreo but I am not very confident about that.
I would appreciate it if someone can find a way around this annoying issue. What software is @HYPER-RX referring to?
Thanks!
Try VLC guys. When I played an HDR video in VLC it tried to force my brightness to max like YouTube does. However, it had to ask for som system write permission to do it and it didnt work completely. See if VLC does a better job though I found it to be pretty good.
MX Player definitely does support HDR. You can tell because in HDR videos, if you try taking a screenshot, the screenshot will simply come out as black, whereas in SDR videos, you'll get a normal screenshot.

Hi I just tried VLC and you was spot on. I can see that it actually does support HDR however I'm still having audio issues with the sound. Especially the HEVC Atmos 7.1. Do I need to download a codec pack or something?
It's a shame because the video quality is incredible!
Working perfectly
I tried to play 4k hdr 60fps video using the sony video app. I had no issues with playing it. It was smooth no lags at all.
codec was hevc and bitrate was 75Mbps and audio was AAC.

Thanks was this on Oreo? And the sound file was it 5.1 or 7.1?
so i recently purchased a Xperia XZ premium. I was really exited since i already have a massive library of 4K movies , and i get to watch them on the go. But sadly i found out the default Video player does not support H265 codec and i had no choice but to use VLC & MX player. so my problem is do i get the same level of HDR play back performance and up-scaling level with VB frame rate sync with these 3rd party players? because iv heard that the default video app has all of those options that i have pointed out.
Also please Let me know which player you use.. Thank you

No, it don't lags! You should check the thread download from Oreo to Nougat the back to oreo... It seems it is a problem with partition fragmentation... Or google play services... You can try to become beta for google play services, if not helps just downgrade to Nougat then update again to oreo

Heck... so you are saying i can run 2160p 10 bit h265 HDR mkv files without a lag on default video player and the lag im getting is due to a software fragmentation? bruhhh.... sony why you do this.
@Inerent also my man i didnt get this part of what you said "You can try to become beta for google play services" care to explain ^_^
Nope it is not software dependent, actually it is the way the file encoded causes the problem. Try to shoot a video with 4K HEVC from your camera, you can play it without lag.
As far as I know it doesn't lags in 8bit, and unless you have OLED display (XZP has IPS) you can't really tell the difference. -- No you can tell the difference but sadly this doesn't change the situation.
MX Player is the greatest one in terms of playback, but VLC is Ad-Free and open source.
Here
I can record my video at 4k in h265 and I can see it
