Is there any way to show AOD notifications without setting up lockscreen - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I don't use lockscreen on my phone, but I want to see new message, missed calls, etc. notifications in the AOD screen.
The "Show notifications" option is greyed out and displays the message:
"Show notification icons on the Always On Display screen if a screen lock type has been set".
I cannot turn it on unless I set up a screen lock.
I have root on the phone, is there any method, xposed module or something else that allows this annoyance to be bypassed?

Always on Display (AOD)

"Show notification icons on the Always On Display screen if a screen lock type has been set."
Why on earth is that specific requirement needed at the end? I want it activated during AOD even without using some type of lock screen.
Is there a way around this? I just want the small notifications to pop up underneath it.
AOD clearly works without having a screen lock.
I was wondering the same thing. I finally landed on using fingerprint to unlock just so that I could see notifications on AOD.

Lock screen notification issues on Nougat

I'm having very inconsistent lock screen notifications on Nougat after the update. I'm on the stock theme with Magazine Unlock.
Update: It appears as if new notifications display on the lock screen. As soon as you unlock the screen, then re-lock it, the notifications disappear from the lock screen even if they're still active in the notification tray. This is not how lock screen notifications are supposed to work, AFAIK and as far as I remember from Marshmallow and other ROMs as well.
Global:
When device is locked: Show all notification content
If device is locked, prevent typing (...) [unchecked]
Screen lock secured with PIN, fingerprint unlock enabled
App specific (In this example, 'Slack'):
Allow notifications [checked]
Display on the lock screen [checked]
When locked: Hide notification content [checked] (tried this set both ways, no difference)
I don't see any lock screen notifications with these settings. In the case of Slack above, I have active notifications in my status bar and I don't see them on the lock screen.
I went to bed last night with nothing displaying, woke up and I saw Calendar, Gmail, etc on my lock screen. Used my phone a bit, re-locked display, turned screen on, and back to no notifications. This morning though, Tasker is now showing in my lock screen (as it should) but none of my other apps are showing on the lock screen.
Is anybody else experiencing this?
I have a similar problem.
I have just upgraded to Nougat, EVA-L09C432B360, and I have no notification on status bar on screenlock. I find it annoying. Didn't find any work around.
Once the screen is unlocked I find the notification on status bar.
I dont want to have the notification displayed as a banner but only in status bar.
It's very annoying. I didn't have this problem on Marshmallow with the VUi Material Design theme, maybe once he gets a version for EMUI 5.0 it'll start working again.
I've just upgraded to B378, but still I got no notification in status bar of the lock screen ( nor aquamail or whatsapp). It might be the applications in fault here.
I just got a brand new Honor 8 which immediately upgraded to Nougat, and this seems to be the default behaviour for lockscreen notifications on EMUI, not an issue or a bug.
Since EMUI is heavily iOS inspired, and this is the notification behaviour on iOS then they copied it. I suggest trying a different lockscreen app until Huawei changes this.
That is caused by the theme used.
Go to themes, customize, lockscreen style, and be sure that you have selected #unlock with images"
I have only magazine unlock option. This did not solve the problem.
I'm having the exact same problem on my P10 lite (it came with Nougat out-of-the-box).
Has anyone figured this out? I don't have unlock with images option either..
As mentioned earlier - EMUI does not use the standard Nougat lockscreen notification actions. Do not expect it to work like stock android. The only way around it is to do one of these two options:
1. Install a 3rd party launcher (be careful, some don't play nicely with fingerprint/pin security)
2. Install Nils Lock Screen Notification app from the Play Store. This app does exactly what you want and lets you keep the stock lock screen.
Had the same issue with Gmail notifications using an Honor 8. The solution I found was hidden in Gmail Settings.
Open Gmail settings
Click on your email account(s) under the General settings
Make sure Notifications is checked
Select Inbox sound and vibrate
Make sure Label notifications is checked
This was the missing piece for me: Make sure the Notify for every message is checked
Screenshots of Gmail Settings
Also make sure you have changed the default email app to Gmail. Settings, Apps, Settings (wheel that appears at the bottom of the screen), Default app settings, Email - Gmail.
I had the same problem before. To fix it you have to enable the magazine unlock after apply the theme.

Any way to disable wake screen for notifications?

I tried to enable from Custom restrictions "Don't turn on the screen" and "Don't wake for notifications" with no luck. Is this a bug or bad user?

Always nice to answer to your own questions . Ambient display -> disable New Notifications. Oneplus logic escapes me.
Disable notifications
Go to the Settings app on android > Sound & Notifications > Scroll Down and App Notifications under notification section > Tap on App name installed on your mobile > Turn off the notification for the app.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, but I wanted just to disable wake screen for notifications not to disable notifications. Was a little confused initially since Oneplus seems to have two settings for the same thing. Got it in the end...
I have the same problem, but your solution does not work for me. As far as I can tell I have everything in ambient display turned off, but the screen still wakes up (to the normal lock screen). To confirm: THE TOGGLE SETTING "NEW NOTIFICATIONS" IS NOT HIGHLIGHTED, WHICH MEANS IT IS OFF. HOWEVER, THE SCREEN STILL WAKES UP.
In addition to that I even have "no notifications on lock screen" selected, which means my screen WAKES UP AND SHOWS NOTHING. It's distracting and useless at the same time. Very annoying.
I have now turned on "ambient display when I pick up the phone". This finally made my screen stop lighting up by itself, though of course now it does it when I pick it up. But at least it doesn't distract me while I'm working on my pc with my phone on the table.
I like my 7 Pro very much...and since this is my 2nd phone from OnePlus, I guess I am fairly satisfied with their implementation of Android Q. However, their way of setting up notifications is one of the worst things I have ever seen! It is convoluted, confusing, and counter intuitive.... not to mention just plain ridiculous. I hope they really get on the ball with the issue of notifications and their useless Horizon light very SOON because a cell phone without proper, accurate, notifications totally defeats the purpose of having a "portable" communications device.

I am having the same issue, how did you get the screen to stop waking up?
I'm trying to find a fix for this, as well. I have an app that wakes screen besides delivering the notification with/without sound. And now I realize I have another one. I also want to have those notifications on, but without waking my screen, just like most of the other apps' notifications. And this is not related to ambient display. In my case, I have stock Android, on a Pixel 3XL.
Thanks!

Actually, there is a fix now, if you run Android 13. Under Apps->Special app access, there is a new option called 'Turn screen on'. I disallowed the annoying app and solved my issue.
I want to disable lock screen wake up for text messages and still no luck on S23. I went under special app access and disabled "Turn screen on" for the messages app (and others), and guess what? The screen still comes on when I get a text. HOLY ANNOYING.
You can turn Lock Screen Notifications completely off, but I dont want that. I want the audible notification to come in without turning the battery draining screen on, and when I tap the screen with my finger I want to see the app badge that tells me when app the notification came in on (signal, or messages, or fakebook, etc). If it's fakebook I may ignore it for example.

As I said in my post, I don't want to disable notifications, I want to disable lighting up the whole screen. The notification icon should show on the always on display without going full annoying brightness on the screen for 5 seconds. That's just dumb.

You might want to consider utilizing the Google Issue Tracker which is a tool used internally at Google to track bugs and feature requests during product development.
For Do Not Disturb - If you have the setting "Always show time and info" enabled (Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Always show time and info) your screen will display a dimly lit clock when the screen is locked, among some other status icons.
In the DND settings, if you check "Don't wake for notifications" and you get a new notification (text, ig, whatever the notification is), it will not show on the screen until you unlock the phone. It will just display that clock and you'll be unaware of the notification.
If you UNcheck "Don't wake for notifications", the lock screen with the large dimly lit clock will change to show the small icons for whatever the notification is.
If you do NOT have enabled the setting "Always show time and info" (Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Always show time and info), I imagine it would be the same behavior, except you would see a difference when you manually wake up (but don't unlock) your screen--you would either see that you got a text message or whatever the notification is, or you wouldn't until you fully unlock the screen.

Quick panel shortcut to disable notifications

Is there a 3rd party app perhaps that lets you add a custom Quick panel shortcut to disable/enable notifications from either a certain/multiple/all apps? Something like "Do not disturb" except it doesn't turn your phone into silent mode, it just turns off the text notification/s. Like if I receive an email, the Gmail icon would still show a +1 counter or even trigger the new email sound, but I wouldn't receive any notification at the top of my screen. Like if I'm showing my photo gallery to a friend, I don't want a random email or SMS or whatever from whomever to pop up and my friend sees it - it's none of their business. I know I can also go manually into Settings, Apps & turn Notifications off completely for specific apps, but I just want a quick 1 tap shortcut like I have for "Do not disturb" mode and also not disable them completely, but just the text notification at the top.

Question Possible to disable Ambient screen

I have tap to wake and lift to wake enabled on my pixel 7 pro. When I use either of these it goes directly to the lockscreen which I want. But sometimes the ambient screen displays instead which I don't want. I have aod etc disabled but it still sometimes shows up. Is it possible to disable it with a root permission? Thanks
I have lift to wake and have tap to wake disabled... also i have wake phone for notifications disabled, and show clock and info on lockscreen disabled and show all notifications on lockcreen disabled. So when i lift the phone, it will go to lockscreen before i do a face unlock and tap the phone again to go into the phone.
So when you have AOD, that means you have notifications showing up on your screen when you phone is not in use... or have the clock screensaver on as AOD or have show clock and info as AOD. So what do you mean? please explain.
I don't have tap because everytime i tap the phone when i need to, it wakes up the phone.

No, im saying I want this ambient screen turned off. If I tap or pick it up I want to see my lockscreen. Not the ambient screen which sometimes shows. At the moment it seems to randomly show from time to time and it really bugs me.
This is the screen that pops up instead of my lockscreen at times. How can I stop it showing? I just want the screen to be completely off or show my actual lockscreen when I wake it up
Settings > Display > Lock screen > Always show time and info OFF, Tap to check phone ON, Lift to check phone ON

These are the exact settings I have enabled and I still sometimes get the ambient display. I think I'll need to disable it through root if anyone knows the command to disable Ambient display
Mine does the same thing from time to time. Never found out why and I've looked everywhere. I don't even notice it anymore. I think it's just a minor visual bug that may or may not ever get resolved.

I think you might be right, surely theres a setting in the build prop or something that can be disabled? I don't use aod at all so even if I had to disable that I wouldn't mind at all
