SM-G955W: Need a quick root, then revert back to non-root (Which one to use?) - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
I currently have the Canadian Model of the Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Model: SM-G955W, running Android 7.0 with most recent OTA firmware) which I believe has the snapdragon chip (please correct me if I'm wrong). I have need to convert an application on my phone to a System App, which is something you can only do while rooted. After performing some research, it appears SamPWNED and SamFail are the two root methods to use on this particular phone. My question is: which one should I use in terms of better stability and less bugs? Also, after performing the conversion, I will want to revert back to an unrooted phone - so which method allows for this as well?
Please let me know,
Thank you.

Rooting the phone will wipe the device, unrooting the phone will also wipe the device... you sure you still want to do this?

It would? In that case.....probably not. I’ll wait for a method that doesn’t require wiping the phone. Thank you so much for letting me know.

That will never happen.

In that case...if I was to root the phone (thus wiping the phone), move an app to become a system app, unroot which then wipes the phone a second time, that that app remain a system app? or be wiped along with everything else?

No, the app won't remain a system app because it's doing a full wipe (system, data, everything)

[Q] factory reset after one click root

just use the one click root tool by kennethpenn, work perfectly thanks. use titanium back to do a backup of all the app and system then took out all the att bloatware. i have few questions at this point.
1.
will i be able to get OTA updates from att? what will happen to all the bloatware that i deleted? would they appear again?
2.
what happens if i do a factory reset on the phone? would i brick the phone? under normal condition that will erase all apps i installed and return it to factory setting, that means all the att bloatware will be back? will i lost root?
3.
what other things i can do after i root the phone at this point?
thank you for your help
no one can help me with those questions??? anyone???
i am sure a lot of people have the same question.
1.
will i be able to get OTA updates from att? what will happen to all the bloatware that i deleted? would they appear again?
I'm not 100% sure on this, but as long as you're running an actual AT&T ROM (not an Asian or Rogers ROM), you'll be notified of the OTA's. Now, if you're not using the stock Recovery image (that is, if you've installed CWM Recovery), you won't be able to apply the update. OTA updates get applied via the stock Recovery image.
2.
what happens if i do a factory reset on the phone? would i brick the phone? under normal condition that will erase all apps i installed and return it to factory setting, that means all the att bloatware will be back? will i lost root?
If you do a factory reset from CWM or within the phone's UI, you're fine. Root will remain in place, and you won't brick it. It just clears the user data from the phone, and should leave "sdcard" intact. However, I'm not 100% sure what happens if you do a factory reset from the bootloader. So just don't do it that way, unless someone else can confirm that it's okay.
3.
what other things i can do after i root the phone at this point?
You ca use apps like AutoKiller to change your memory management, for one. That's about all I'm doing with root right now. If we ever get custom kernels, you'll be able to overclock your CPU. If you search the Play Store for "root," you'd doubtlessly find some other root apps that you may be interested in.
Hope this helps!
Don't ever ever ever install an OTA on any rooted Android device. At the least, it won't work anyway, or you will lose root. At the worst, you will be stuck in a bootloop. Updated ROMs (based on the OTA's, but rooted, and safe to flash) usually get posted in Development soon after the OTA's go out. That is what you want to install.

I can confirm that it's OK. My phone was rooted and stuck in a boot loop. I did a factory reset. It was reset and still rooted after the fact. So you can do it.
thank you all

Just to clarify, pre-rooted versions of the official ROMs (which often get posted on XDA, as I mentioned) may need unlocked bootloader to install, so this will possibly not be an option for a while. Although there may be alternate safe ways to update (but not OTA). For instance, a leaked 1.83 firmware version is already available as an RUU in the Development subforum. Apparently, its okay to install via RUU, then re-root.
In general, the safe thing to do is to read up on here when updates are released, and see if there is a safe way to update on a rooted phone.

[Q] Unrooting Without Wiping Data

Hi, I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 running stock JB 4.1.1 at the moment but I want to root it...again. I did it once before and thought I was going to have to send it in for other reasons but I didn't and now I am on the basic, stock firmware. My question today is, can I effectively root and then if needed, unroot and return to stock firmware WITHOUT losing all of my apps and settings. I know making backups is an option, and I do constantly backup my phone, but isn't there a way out there to unroot WITHOUT losing all of our data, apps, settings, etc.? Thank you for any response and help.

I don't believe so, I think in order for either the rooting or un rooting process, the phone will be wiped either way. Google services of course will save your app download history and some of your settings but will be wiped until you log into Google account. Hope this helps.
If u have supersu as the root application in the settings is a full unroot option. Click on that and reboot your phone and you are now uprooted without wiping any data. If u have superuser app then I don't know if that is there or not. I'm not familiar with superuser.

Can I uninstall Superuser to install Supersu so I can permanently unroot without loosing data?
Yes I'm sure you could. Just make sure that the superuser is completely gone from the /system partition before u uproot with supersu.

Starting Over after TWRP and Rooting

I installed TWRP, then rooted 10.4.2.18.
I need to start over as well, between the random app loading, gestures and stop, I think from scratch would be nice.
Can I do a factory data reset?
I have a backup from TWRP but I didn't label it very clearly and I'm not sure what it is.
It's unlocked and rooted - by doing the reset I'm assuming I'll loose it the root - am I correct?.
OK, so I asked what:
1. the wrong forum?
2. The wrong site?
3. Worded it wrong?
4. Too noob?
I could go on. Over a 100 people looked and NO-one can even point me to the right place if it's been answered before, or have an answer!?

You can try factory data reset from settings app if you like. It is a variable on what you will loose and gain. It is a good place to start. Don't do wipe from the bootloader menu or wipes formats from twrp.
Note: Some wipes and formats can be used in twrp in the case where you will flash a rom after, when flashing stock it seldom helps.
Note: Twrp allows you to choose the name for your backup
You can also flash any of the asus stock firmware but you will have stock recovery (instead of twrp), probably loose root, and all of your apps and data.
My choice for best asus stock firmware is 10.4.2.18. It is not best for everyone but I like it.
Good Luck!
Sorry I didn't notice your post. For everyone else I'm sure they didn't wish to deliver such iffy information.
For future reference, a factory reset will take your ROM back to the point of a fresh install. You will lose all data that has been added since first flashing your ROM. If you were running a custom rooted ROM then you will not lose root. If you go back and flash a non-rooted ROM then you WILL lose root.
If you have data that you need to keep, I recommend using an app like Titanium Backup. Go in and choose to do a batch backup up all your apps. Once you have done a factory reset, you can sign back into Google Play and download Titanium. You can then go in and restore the apps you want. I don't recommend installing all of those apps with their data. Titanium gives you multiple options on how and what you want to restore. Only install the individual app data that you must to have. Usually, I'll restore all of my apps with no data at all. I will then go back in and individually restore the app data that I need.
If changing a ROM, restoring app data for all of your apps can have adverse side effects. That is why I say to only install what you need. Hope this helps. :good:
the best way to start from scratch is do a factory reset then use fastboot to upgrade you're firmware

I did label them, I backed it up - I think - right after I installed twrp and rooted it, ( I usually do ) but I'm not 100% sure so I didn't want to try and screw it up.

Checked and that's what I'm on and so far happy with it.
I un-installed a ton of apps, while I was waiting for an answer, and the thing doesn't seem possessed any more, so I'm adding them back in one at a time giving each 2-3 days.

ABSOLUTELY no reason for an appology. I'd done a search and not come up with anything I could use, and couldn't believe no-one had done this before.
Everything sounds good.
I need to give you one piece of info.
The only thing flashing twrp replaces is stock recovery. Everything else remains the same.
Good Luck!

BUT when you do a data backup and reset, doesn't the system draw FROM the "stock" recovery?

If you are talking about backup with twrp, by default system, emmc, and data are backed up.
Reset erases user apps and data; all basic data would need to be entered as if you had just purchased the unit.

OH! I was under the impression that it read an image from to the boot parition/recovery partition and wrote that. NOW I get it.
THANK you.
Last question - If I do this (installed es file manager last night and the bloody thing wild), is root.signed.zip still good for rooting this? It's unlocked and 10.4.2.18.

I use es file manager for working with both sdcards. I have used it since I received this tablet and find it very useful. Maybe uninstall and reinstall. For a root browser I use rom toolbox pro.
I have not used root.signed.zip but downloading and looking at the installation I don't find a problem. I'd say try it.

Just saw your post - don't know where I went ...
I do not have a custom ROM, so what you are saying is no matter how I start over, I'm going to have to re-install TWRP, re-root it and ad apps - correct? It seems to me that settings|backup and reset, I'll leave TWRP intact just reset.
OK, I'm somewhat screwed I think - if anyone's out there (sorry pretty frustrated), I cleaned the D-Cache and the cahe, better but not good. Then a settings|reset and the from within the OS and the same problem does what it wants when it wants, opens programs (usually google voice), pops up the window to set wallpaper, freezes etc. Then I restored a backup from early January from WITHIN TWRP, and cleaned the caches - same. Restored another and cleaned same. I have cleaned the system, as I cannot see/figure out which clean rom custom I can use on this, as I think that might be my only hope. Other than tossing in the junk pile as it's unusable like this.
Whatever is going on is IN the system, which leads me to a custom rom as my only possible salvation - (think I just said that, hum).
Any ideas?

LG G Stylo dilemma (Virgin Mobile)

Hi, I bought a Virgin Mobile LG G Stylo, but I am afraid of these app closes and keyboard crashes it has on 5.1.1. I want to root it so I can still do what I've been doing on my previous phones, like wifi hotspots, cpu clocking, bloatware removal, etc., but I can only root 5.1.1. Basically, if I do the update, I cannot root, but if I don't update and just root, I cannot update to remove the bugs. Would anyone know any method to root 6.0, or might I be fine and be able to make 5.1.1 work with some ROM on Virgin? OR, has the Stylo 2 any root method yet? I am stuck with an Optimus Slider until I figure this out

The only 6.0 marshmallow root on the stylo is metropcs/T-mobile. They are able to root because they have unlocked bootloaders. The Virgin Mobile phone can only root on 5.1.1. So, if you want root do not update. I use the VM stylo too, and I'm on marshmallow, and I wish I'd stayed on 5.1.1 w/root. There are no roms for the sprint variants, so all you can do is debloat and tweak, but you'll have that. I'm pretty sure you can alleviate your crashes and app closes by factory resetting from recovery. Just clear it a few times. If you disable too much google garb you get instability. Good Luck

You mean factory reset every time it starts to get bad? I do not want to reset all of the time. Isn't resetting bad if you are rooted? Should I just wait on the Stylo 2? Would there be a way to unlock the bootloader after rooting? If so, maybe removing root and then updating and rooting again?
And what if I installed Katana? I found @GameTheory's website, but it says it is for the Tmobile variants

You don't need to wipe data all the time. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache only every so often. That won't erase your apps.
You can wipe the phone in recovery, it is similar to factory resetting but it must be done in recovery on a rooted phone. Once you do a wipe, you can reinstall your apps. Once you are rooted, you can use Titanium Backup to restore your apps.
Also, once rooted, you can do a complete (Nandroid) backup of your phone so that if you ever need it, you can restore everything back to the phone.

I know nothing about the Stylo 2. to be honest. Not interested either. Such an inferior phone and it sucks that Boost and LG are putting out a phone that has limited specs. Same thing they did with the original Stylo for Boost.

Return to stock firmware and error 0x110060null5e2830

Hello everyone, I need your help !
So I want to sell my Galaxy S8+ (G955F) but my potential buyer wants to get rid off root, so I flashed Android 7.0 via ODIN. Problem is with Samsung Health app, because immediately after launch an error occurs because this app will not work on rooted device (error 0x110060null5e2830). Any app for root detection isn't detecting root, so where is the problem? What can I do to make this app, and everything from Samsung, work?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my English

Ok, so this is what have I done, maybe someone will find this useful:
1. Root stock Samsung firmware (XEO version, Android 7.0)) with Magisk;
2. Found this build.prop file and changed value ro.config.tima from 1 to 0 and saved the file;
3. Samsung Health still wasn't working, but I restarted the device and app starts to work;
4. Unroot phone by flashing stock Samsung firmware (Android 7.0) via ODIN, BUT, as you suggested, I used HOME_CSC file;
5. Update the phone to Android 8.0 via OTA update;
6. Samsung Health works!;
7. Restore phone to the factory settings;
And something went wrong here, because Samsung Health app again isn't working, still the same error occurs. Why? Is it because I restored the factory settings for this potential buyer? Well, he eventually will do this by himself... Is it because factory reset resets the changed value in build.prop? Is it possible to factory reset the phone without the necessity for editing build.prop all over again just to get rid of that error?

when the Knox fuse is blown (meaning you flashed twrp or a custom rom) you will never be able to use SHealth or Samsung Pay on that phone unless you root first. (I don't think Samsung Pay will ever work, but as stated earlier, there is a work around to get SHealth working again but you have to be rooted to do it.)
This is a hard ware thing - the phone knows that something was flashed on it - and samsung decieded that for security reasons, when soemthnig is flashed - ever - that phone is potentially corrupt and will not allow those apks to work on them. (as I said, the only way around that is to have some kind or work around you can use after you root the device) AND if rooted - you will not receive samsung OTA's.

I know about the OTA's, but I received one today (with Android 8.0) BEFORE I decided to factory reset this phone. Before this even Samsung Health app was working.
Ok, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I can edit this ro.config.tima from 1 to 0 value so many times I want, but if I someone will try to factory reset this phone everything will be undone to the previous state (when ro.config.tima is 1 again, instead of 0) and actually nothing can be done to get rid of root permanently and make Samsung app works?
but if I someone will try to factory reset this phone everything will be undone to the previous state
that's it, why do you do it? factory reset??
you do not need that at the update

As I mentioned above, I want to sell this phone and my potential buyer wants me to unroot the device, because he wants to use Samsung apps (like Samsung Health and all the others), he also mentioned that he wants to pull out the phone of the box "like he would buy the new one by himself" and because of this I tried to factory reset via option in settings. He would eventually do it himself and I want to avoid any problems because of this
So... Absolutely nothing can be done?
