Hotspot Mod (Non Root) for S9 + (snapdragon) (Data don't count toward Hotspot data) - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Guides, News, & Discussion

This method combined with a second part FOR SURE does not Count toward your hotspot data at all. thanks to @BlueFox721
it will stick during reboots but a PRL update will reset it and you'll have to do it again. and possibly a firmware update will too)
(like the other post)
Instructions
1. Download Shortcut master lite here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.shortcutmaster.lite
2. Next open shortcut master and in the right hand corner
3. click the drop down and select "App manager"
a list of all apps (system included) will appear.
4. Scroll down and Click on Com.LTEFUNTIONALITY.TEST
5. hit the launch button that appears.
6. Go into the APN2 LTE internet settings (where you should be now) and were it says APN type, Change it from: Default, mms to: Default, mms, dun
7. Next in the top right Corner hit the 3 dots and click SAVE.
it may take one or 2 tries before it Opens the APN to be edited. At first it may stay greyed out. just try it again in a few minutes. or an hour.
if you have a Plan with no hotspot, your Done and good to go. (remember if the PRL updates you'll have to redo it)
TO USE
I shut off the data turn on the hotspot wait 5 secs then turn data back on
the above MOD will work perfectly and will not Count any hotspot data.
Feel free to share your Experiments
Remember if you PRL updates it will reset the MOD
In the mean time I will continue working on the ADB method that sticks through Everything except factory reset and Post it here when I know its working .

Subscribed!

Am I understanding your post correctly ? That the mod you are working on will allow you to use your phone as a hotspot and you could download a 4GB file and it would not count against your total data usage ? That sounds too good to be true but I am really intrigued - looking forward to hearing more....

You're a lifesaver, man!

Subbed on this!

Any other non-root hotspot (also a Sprint user)? I don't care if it counts towards my data usage, I just need to be able to do some basic web browsing/email/etc a couple weekends a month from my laptop and not my S9+. Following this thread!!!

Thanks for working on this! Will keep an eye out for the update.

Robalboa said:
UPDATE 2. the hotspot is definitely working and does not count data toward your hotspot usage. But DOES count it toward total data, just none on the hotspot data (yesss)
Check back soon just wanting to verify a few more things. Sorry for keeping you waiting.

I have sprint, small data plan (3gig). It includes tethering. Just tested it again, with my s9. Works fine just with the toggle and nothing changed.
Home is 100mb, i get my fill of gigs for sure, lol

For the people who have a hotspot that comes with their plan (ALL UNLIMITED FREEDOM PLANS), this wont count the data toward the 10 gig limit. Once it hits 10 gigs it becomes unusable
Except for a web page maybe.

Any chance this works on a pixel or pixel 2?

I can't find such menu on my device

This also works on the Galaxy note 8, however, I could not use android messages to send mms or videos until I changed the proxy back to what it was. I wish there was a way that I could create a new setting to change back and forth when I use hotspot without going through the dialer.

Tethering broken (Sprint)

Hey guys,
I'm trying to get my n5 to tether and it just gives me an error as soon as I start the WiFi hotspot (stock). Any idea what could be causing this or now I could fix it?
Using 4.4.2, by the way...

Good to see you over here. Are you rooted yet? Cuz i think Sprint is blocking tethering unless you pay for it

I am rooted, so if there's some trick to try please do share. I believe I'm paying for the hotspot feature, although going through the change plan process doesn't seem to show that option anywhere (I just tried to find it to see whether or not it was already enabled but I can't find it anywhere on the Sprint site...).

I had tethering working on Sprint via this mod:
add a new entry to the "global" table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file.
Just updated to 4.4.2; re-rooted (via WugFresh toolkit) tried tethering and its not working anymore. Not sure if its related to the 4.4.2 or not.
Anyone have a fix?

Thanks, appreciate the help. My issue is different however - the phone seems to start the tethering and I can connect to it through my tablet - but no data seems to flow... can't even run a speedtest on the tablet or load any webpage...
On the T-Mo side, I was afraid that we would lose the tethering with the latest 4.2.2 OTA - and initially, it looked that way. Speedtest would work on download side but "communications issues" on the upload side & unable to finish and show results .... Arrrrrgghhhh.
With two Nexus 5 on hand, it was easy to compare pre- and post- edits, hotspot & speed data, etc. along with comparing the entries in the above mentioned settings.db fields. First, save a coopy of the *.db just in case it is needed - then, added the tether_dun_required and value to 0 as a new entry/line, saved & exit. Reboot device for good measures, and sure enough, it connected by got re-directed to T-Mo's home page ... APN was set to IPv6
Change it to IPv4 and exit, restarted WiFi hotspot and it is good - fast speed and websites loading quickly, etc.
This may, or may not, help out those on Sprint's network - but, worth looking into ...

Hmm, wonder what happened with my config then. I'm in the same boat - stock rooted only. maybe i will try removing the new line in settings.db are re-adding... Right now I can launch hotspot and connect to it from tablet/laptop but no data flows thru the pipe....
I lost my tether after the 4.4.2 update as well. I have a Sprint Nexus 5. My laptop and tablet were able to connect to the hotspot, but no data was coming across.
I looked at the settings.db file and could still see the "tether_dun_required" entry was definitely there. So I decided to replace the settings.db file with a copy I had from before the 4.4.2 update. Rebooted the phone, and magically, tether started working again.
I was curious though to see if I put the post-4.4.2 update settings.db file back, then would I lose my tether? So, once again, I replaced the settings.db file with the post-4.4.2 version, rebooted the phone, and magically, tether still was working! WTF!
The only thing interesting that I noticed during all of this is that every time I replaced the settings.db file on the phone, the corresponding settings.db-journal file would disappear. I don't know much about SQLite, but I wonder if the journal file had some transaction state with the "tether_dun_required" hack removed or not committed.
Anyway, hope this helps.

I use it on my T-Mobile phones. Follow the link in the description for settings. Gotta warn ya though, it might not work without further tweaks. You might need to google up some more specific instructions. The problem with this app (not the app's fault though) is that every phone/brand/ROM is different and needs different settings, and unfortunately these settings don't have descriptions. Plus the author is Italian and his English ain't too good.
You'll probably also have to create a new APN for tethering. Go to your System Settings, More networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names, then hit the menu button to add a new APN. Copy everything in the default APN down, then make everything in the new APN exactly the same, but instead of IPv6, use IPv4.
For tethering to just your laptop though, I recommend PdaNet+ (not a root app) and using USB tethering. The reason is that using your phone as a wifi hotspot is a processor and battery hog, and the more it's used, the hotter your phone will get and the more your battery gets used (shortening its overall lifespan). USB tethering however basically turns your phone into a conduit, rather than a rebroadcaster, and won't fry your phone. It works by using a companion program on your computer (also does bluetooth, but it's much slower), and has the option (which you need to use) to "hide tether usage". Another cool feature is you can set it up so text messages will pop up on your computer. The one single issue with USB tethering with PdaNet is with Netflix. If you try to watch something, it'll take you to the page saying your computer doesn't meet the minimum system requirements. Whatever VPN/proxy/whatever that it uses to mask your usage doesn't jive with Microsoft Silverlight, which Netflix uses. The way around this is to disable the "hide tether usage" option when loading a video, and as soon as it starts loading, select "hide tether usage" again, and you're good to go.
The really cool thing is that these two apps work simultaneously. I use PdaNet to USB tether my phone to my laptop (which is plugged into my 42" TV). The same phone is running Wifi Tether Router so I can use my tablet on wifi. Seriously, how cool is that?!? Complete home internet and cell service for $89.08/month (after taxes).

And one more hotspot bypass, tested on Nougat, no MSL needed

Ok, quick and dirty yet once again.
This method is not so quick but it works and will keep through OTA updates. I don't know who originally came up with this but this is where i found it so my credit goes to @Sczar for his post
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69767241&postcount=3
OK, here we go. First go here and root your phone( you can unroot when you're done):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-s7-edge/how-to/sm-g935p-spr-root-nougat-7-0-data-t3568780
@godpowerrr is always around to help.
Once rooted open up a root file explorer and navigate to /efs/imei/ and open the file "mps_code.dat " with a text editor.
Change the SPR to spr (lowercase) and save the file. Once that file is changed simply use odin to flash the stock firmware, preferably with home_csc to avoid losing your apps and settings.
Once you're booted back up you should be able to use the ##3282# dialer code and select view, then APN Settings. At that point you should be able to simply tap on the APN and add the dun to default, mms line. don't forget to click save after you edit each APN you add it to. At this point you have some different features but you lost your wifi calling and gained video calling. You're free to keep it this way if you like. if you want wifi calling and the normal setup continue on with the next few steps.
Once you double check the changes took, simply re-root and change the file contents back to uppercase. After you save the file re-flash stock firmware with home_csc. This will restore wifi calling and anything else that was missing. At this point you're now on stock non-rooted with your tethering APNs. If you wish to remain stock with tethering stop here, you're all set.
From here you can either do your OTA or root, either way this will keep through the root or OTA.
Special thanks to @Sczar ,
I would try this but i have hotspot on my Sprint plan :/. But I trust your words because you've helped me a lot and taught me things i didnt even know. I'm sure it will help others.

It sounds like you're asking how to check without sprintzone if your data is showing up on the hotspot data of your plan or just normal data use. if that's what you're asking i assume you could check that online in your account details or call sprint and ask. I've never had the hotspot on my plan so i'm not really familiar with how it all works. If that is what you were asking i'd be interested in knowing as well.

My best guess would be that it doesn't affect the hotspot plans data usage based solely on the dun method being used to bypass Tmo hotspot limit. I would like to see a verified answer from someone that actually has a hotspot plan. [emoji6]

I think it may be possible with another carrier but I think our packages that we disable keep this from seeing the change after a reboot. I haven't gotten any response about another carrier so I have no idea how it works for them. The flashing seems to be what triggers the system to see the change. If you use the home_csc when you flash you don't have to re-disable packages, re-install apps, or set your phone back up. Honestly I don't have the time to check package by package, with a reboot after each one, but I would encourage anyone with the time and patience to give it a try. Worst case Ontario you'll have to re-flash stock anyway. The original method doesn't usually take more than 10 minutes and lasts through updates.

Get NATIVE Hotspot Working with Unlimited Data (No Root) on S8

Video instructions are linked below.**
Hey, everyone! I just wanted to share something that I figured out when I was trying to enable my WiFi hotspot on my S8. First of all, I have an AT&T Galaxy S8 (G950U) with Unlimited Data, and my hotspot doesn't typically work at all. When I try to enable it normally, it has to "verify," then it tells me I need to subscribe. However, while playing around with Package Disabler Pro and the hotspot, I figured out how to get the hotspot turned on (running off of unlimited data) without root or any sort of complex workaround. The only things you'll need are a $2 app, ANY WiFi source (even locked), and a supported carrier on your S8 (AT&T, Verizon, and others). Here the steps to get it up and running:
1) Download Package Disabler Pro (by policedeveloper), get it up and running, and search for "tether" in the seach box
2) Three options should pop up ("TetheringProvision", "TetheringAutomation", and "com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice"). Disable all three packages.
3) Go to your Mobile Hotspot settings and make sure WiFi Sharing is turned ON. Very important.
4) Go to your WiFi Settings and connect to any WiFi network near you, but PURPOSELY put in the wrong WiFi password. It will try to connect for a short time, so you need to be quick on the next step.
5) Quickly enable your mobile hotspot while the phone is still trying to connect to the network with the wrong password. After the hotspot turns on, quickly turn off your WiFi. The hotspot will stay on and continue to run off of your unlimited data!
I actually tested this last year on the Galaxy S7 edge on AT&T, so it works on there as well! I've uploaded the following videos to YouTube as well for the S7 and S8 respectively, so if this helped you, be sure to go click on some ads on my YouTube videos! It helps me out lol.
**S7 edge video: https://youtu.be/w3usivgCFSc
**S8 video: https://youtu.be/f8n6-ZrdIQg
It's worth noting that I'm actually not sure how many carriers this works on. I know it doesn't work on Sprint, but lately it actually started working on Verizon too. I've had some people tell me that it works on other smaller carriers as well, but if it works for you in a different carrier leave a comment below so I can see how many it works on please!
Not seemingly working for sprint. No matter how fast I swap to disable the wifi, if the wifi is disconnected, hotspot it turned off.

Yeah, unfortunately it won't work on Sprint. Turns out they have a different way of checking to see if you're subscribed to tethering. In an OTA update last Friday, Sprint locked down the ##DATA# method and settings are now grayed out for me. The previous Shortcut method I'd used to edit APN settings wasn't working either. I did come a different Shortcut Master search string which allowed me to get in and edit the APN, however. I don't know why from one view it works, but from the other it did not. If memory serves it was looking for LTEfunctionality.
These carriers need a swift kick in the ass for disabling features on these phones.

Oh, I see. That sucks! I don't have a Sprint Galaxy phone, so I can't test anything out, but I wonder if it's still possible through that different search string. I don't really know how any of that works though. What I really wish would happen is for Samsung to actually stand up to these carriers and not keep taking their BS. However, even Apple, as great as they are at this, blocks the hotspot on certain iPhones depending on the carrier and plan...

Yes tf they do. Samsung needs to learn from Apple and stop taking the carriers' BS. That right there would solve a problem a lot of people have with Samsung, but of course they're not going to stop.

U r correct, the ltefunctionality is the place for editing the apns. Search the sprint thread as this method has been posted several times using quickshortcut maker app and searching test to find the directory. Click try then look for lteapn settings and add dun to the default, mms. It should look like the following.... deault, mms, dun
Any prl or profile updates along with android os updates will undo this. So each time any of those update redo the above steps. I'm on 10gb hotspot and have used it for 3 weeks last month with Bill showing no hotspot data used. I'm on sprint
You should've bought an unlocked S8. I have unlimited data on AT&T with an unlocked S8 and the hotspot works just fine.

I never run out of reasons to ensure any phone I buy has root.
Does this method show as you using hot spot and they charge you for using it? I have the unlimited data plan but I am not paying the extra for the hotspot feature because I think it is dumb and should be free anyways as a feature of the phone so I refuse to pay for that service. I have ATT.

Nope! I've been doing this for over a year now, and I've never gotten any notice, warning, or anything from AT&T. I use AT LEAST 100GB of data every month, and several months I've used over 200GB. They haven't charged me a dime even though I'm not supposed to have the hotspot with my unlimited data plan! And I don't use a VPN or anything...

Well cool. I got it to work. I haven't had much time to test it but it seems great.
On Verizon s8 anyone figure out how to get this working. Can't find app "TetheringProvision" or anything similar to disable on my VZ s8 phone.
I found "TetheringAutomation", and "com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice" and disabled. It still checks subscription and fails.
Thanks!
Solution: Switch to Tmobile

You can get your hotspot working by popping sim tray, unlock phone, open up stopwatch, insert sim tray and start stopwatch at the same time, when the stopwatch hits 8 seconds turn on hotspot from the pull down menu.
I know it takes some work but works every time for me. I will try to post a video for anyone who wants. Working on my verizon s8+. Thanks!

I thought for sure that this was going to be a joke to see how long I would sit there popping my sim and launching apps and such, but WOW.
It actually worked on my third attempt ( VZ S8+)
Thanks again for posting this!:good:
Too easy I just went to Settings > Apps clicked the
overflow menu to show system apps and forced stop tetheringprovision and tetheringautomation. I also disabled tethering provision's access to change system settings.
My hotspot worked right away I'm on ATT UDP
has this stopped working after the lastest ATT update

No Root Hotspot Mod Oreo 8.0 and Below

Hey guys, I have found a way to get hotspot working in Oreo without rooting or paying for the service. Timing seems to be important for Sprint's software to load and block the functionality of the hotspot. This method does work on Oreo, but it also works on all other versions below it as well. Follow the steps below or watch the video at the bottom and post back here if it works!
1. Download and install Shortcut Master Lite from the play store.
2. Open Shortcut Master Lite and search for com.test.ltefunctionality and make sure there are no spaces before or after the query.
3. Open the result ending with LTEFunctionalityTest and find LTE APN Setting in the list and tap it.
4. Open APN2 EHRPD internet and scroll to APN type. See if you can edit it. If so then great! Add ,dun to the end and to the same for APN2 LTE internet and you're done! If you cannot edit, which is likely on Oreo, then continue with the steps.
5. Some have had success with rebooting the phone and getting into Shortcut Master Lite quickly after the reboot. For others this does not work. You can try it and see for yourself.
6. Open up the dialer and type ##27263# This resets your carrier customization settings and reboots the phone.
7. Upon reboot, follow steps 2 through 4 again and it WILL work. Make sure you save your changes when editing the APN Types.
8. Verify your hotspot is working by toggling it on and connecting a device.

I got this to work on my Galaxy S9+ for the last two weeks. As of 5/29/18 it has quit working and If I redo the procedure it immediately catches it and shuts it off.

id like to know as well
Is there a way to get this to work on verizon? The old sim card trick no longer works on Oreo.
Does this still works? Also I'm suppose to have unlimited plan, but once I use certain amount of data the speed get drastically reduced, is there a way to avoid or bypass the speed limit on Sprint?
Btw OP love the Insaniquarium profile pic haha

I just used this on my note 8 with the CRE1 update and it worked great.
Now does anyone know if it works on the s8?
Hello, I was using an app (shortcut master lite) to modify hotspot to work. But now when I go into shortcut master it's all greyed out. I cannot select anything. Can someone help to enable so I can get hotspot to working again.

I have an S8+ and basically modified this setting via ADB way back on Android 7 and it has persisted all the way through the upgrade to Oreo. I am currently on CRG3 and it still works. One trick to note is to turn off mobile data, turn on the hotspot, and then turn mobile data back on. Has been working since I got this phone back in May 2017...
Now to see if the ADB method will work on the Note9 in a few days...

Hey guys, I have written an app that makes this process pretty easy. Shortcut Master Lite is no longer available on the Play Store.
