install twrp without losing data - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Good evening, I saw some questions similar to this one in the forum, but none had my kind of doubt.
When a new ROM comes out for both S7 and S8, I install via ODIN using the CSC HOME option, so as not to lose the data.
The problem is in the installation of TWRP whenever I install the same by ODIN, when entering the app and trying to install example no-verity ja start I get the message that the DATA folder has been corrupted and can not be mounted.
This way it only works once again doing WIPE DATA, but then I lose my data and I have to start from scratch.
Is there a way this does not happen or will it always be like this when updating a ROM?
Thank you.

Have you tried backing up data with twrp before you wipe and copying it to your pc so you can do a full wipe then put the backup onto the phone and flash It? You can back up data folder only

Good afternoon,
Thanks for the reply.
So from what I mentioned above, I do a full backup as I normally do, and I also do a separate from the DATA folder.
Then I install the ROM and TWRP, will it corrupt the DATA folder so I restore only it? Would it be this?
If so, will it work out, in relation to being a ROM different from the other?

The main rom info needed is contained in the system folder. The data folder is application data and whatnot. Reboot into twrp and use the backup option, then copy to pc. Do a full wipe of all, pit backup of data folder and new rom on internal or sd. Go into terp and flash the rom and data folder. Do not flaah system or it will overwrite the new rom. u will restore everything even if you don't have the APK installed in your system. It will return the data, you may need to reinstall the APK. Gmail for example will return will email addresses and messages, contacts and texts will come back to what they were at backup. You should back up modem and efs and boot as well and keep them safe. What I do is I get my phone set up fully, all apps I need and any games and data and then back it up again so any issues and I restore it to a fully functional state and don't need to install tons of things

Good afternoon,
I'm sorry for the text I'm using Google Translate.
I believe that I did not understand correctly, because the error happens in the following way, I install a ROM, reinstall the TWRP, yes yes it corrupts the folder DATA!
If I understood mistake, I apologize.

Is it a custom Rom or a stock rom? Also you can backup via ADB

The ROM I use is provided by Samsung, with no modifications, when I install it I use the CSC option the HOME file, in order not to lose the data, and of course, I do not lose anything I only update the ROM.
The problem is that I need to reinstall TWRP after installing ROM, and when I access TWRP it has corrupted the DATA folder.

You can extract the samsung md5 and repack it as a zip with superrs kitchen and then flash it from twrp. Just remove the recovery.img from the extracted files before zipping it up. Then you can simply flash twrp. Then the rom and not have to worry about the fact that you are stuck in a loop of being locked out because you don't need odin for the rom and it won't overwrite your recovery. If that's too much work try using a custom Rom from xda

Thank you very much for your patience. But I'm not clear, or you do not understand.
The problem is not in the ROM, but in the TWRP installation. If I install the ROM with the option CSC HOME I do not lose anything, everything is working correctly.
When I install TWRP it corrupts the DATA folder. The problem is there!

I was saying to use a zip rom because then you can reflash the rom without reflashing twrp. So you flash twrp, it says data error and then you flash rom from zip, which reinstall system and data but will not copy stock recovery over twrp. So you will not have to reinstall it and be stuck. Or try a different version of twrp might also help. Stock firmware overwrites recovery and the rom. You need to modify it to remove recovery from the firmware, or use a custom Rom to stop it from erasing twrp

I think I understood, more or less, since I translate for Google.
But assuming I want to use normal ROM, you have to back up the DATA folder before installing the ROM and after installing the new ROM and TWRP, restore only the DATA?
Thank you again.

Yes a new rom will overwrite data, you need a backup before. You should be able to connect your phone to a linux operating system and use adb to connect and back it up, if twrp will not let you take a back up.

In my case I can back up the DATA folder by TWRP. Is there doubt, if I back up the DATA folder in one version of Android and then restore in another version, will it be compatible?

Yes it will be, marshmallow and nougat are completely compatible from the boot loader up. You can also turn your stock samsung md5 into a zip file so you do not need odin to install it. You will be able to flash it from twrp

Can you not read the website?

I know what you mean. Twrp can't access the data folder because it's encrypted. But you do have to format it to gain proper access. You have to copy the files out or back them up

Proper way to update ROM

I was just wondering what steps I need to take in order to install an updated version of my rom. Currently I use the aokp jb version 4. Want to update to the new milestone. Can someone help me out with the procedure? Will I lose any data?

. First thing you should do is a nand backup in recovery (so you have something to go back to if all else fails)
. backup your SD card
. move your nand backup and sd card backup to your computer (that way if your sd gets corrupted you can reformat and push your backups to your device)
. you can also backup your apps + data with something like titanium backup (although now at least in JB if you have chosen this option Google will restore your apps, does not always work for me though so beware)
! Note that Tibu is quite controversial some people love it and swear by it and some people claim that it creates lots of issues, if you decide to use it, only use it to backup/restore user apps and not system apps. I personally use the pro version since it can sync backups to my Box and Dropbox account.
in addition to all of this I backup my sms, call log and custom launcher settings (but that's just me i'm a bit paranoid and I love redundancy)
When you're staying with the same rom you typically don't have to factory reset/clean install (unless of course the dev recommends it), just wipe cache and dalvik in recovery and flash your new rom.zip (don't forget to fastboot flash the boot.img if you're on the latest hboot) in recovery.
If you do not factory reset/clean install you will not loose data fingers-crossed. if you start encountering a lot of weirdness after a dirty flash well you will have to factory reset/clean install. I like to clean install most of the time so that I don't have to try to troubleshoot a bunch of stuff when s**T goes wrong plus it's easier to get support for obvious reasons.
In this particular case Milestone release of AOKP (milestone is a "stable" release and this is the first one) I would ABSOLUTELY do a clean install and I believe Rohan requires it because of kernel changes and the likes.
Hope all this makes sense and I did not forget anything.

Clean install: The partitions are empty
Proper steps
Wipe System
Factory Reset
Wipe Cache (Optional, Factory reset should have done it already)
Wipe Dalvik Cache (optional, I usually dont wipe and problems dont occur)

You can get the boot.IMG from the ruu zip or a 2.20 stock rooted Rom, which is in the one x pinup sticky in the android development section
Edit: boot.emmc.win is the boot.IMG. just rename it to boot.IMG and flash it from fastboot

yep just rename boot.emmc as boot.img and now you can use this on one xl http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963896
makes it a lot friendlier, you don't need to extract the boot.img from the rom.zip, the app does for you and also you don't need a computer, you can do it all from your device

This is why you shouldn't use toolkits, you have no access to fastboot and no idea how to fix it. What drivers are installed on your PC? I guess it doesn't matter, my advice is to completely delete anything that the toolkit installed and start fresh. Go to my guide thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2839471
I have links to the Android SDK (which contains adb/fastboot) and the right drivers for this phone. Make sure you reboot your PC after deleting everything, then install the SDK and the drivers, reboot PC again, connect phone.

When I tried to flash initially I got the below
Went into recovery and did Factory reset and then wipe cache partition. Then tried Apply update and scrolled to the ROM file and apply update and I get the below error
Install Failed

E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I have the files saved in the download folder.
Then when I tried to install with TWRP rather than update I clear cache, dalvik and system and tried to load and got the below error

Ok, you got this error because you're trying to flash a custom ROM with the stock recovery. The stock recovery can only flash zips signed by CM (official updates)

Your problem here is that you're trying to install a ROM but you don't have the correct firmware installed. When flashing a Lollipop ROM for the first time you need to first flash Lollipop firmware and Lollipop modem. Once you've flashed those they're always there so you don't need to do it again. The only reason you'd need to flash firmware and modem again would be if you wanted to return to a KitKat ROM, and then it'd be KitKat firmware and modem that you'd need to flash. Anyway, you'll find the modems here:
http://boeffla.df-kunde.de/bacon/modems
And I mirror the firmwares here:
https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B98G0KTJwnBFRGhZeUNpMEI4ajg/edit
PS. I also noticed you weren't wiping properly before attempting to install the ROM. When flashing a ROM you need to perform a full wipe, this includes system, data, cache, and dalvik cache. This didn't cause the problem you experienced, but had the install succeeded you would have had other problems.

Cheers thanks for that. I thought the ROM updated the firmware and modems so that's a lesson learned
So I download the modem and firmware and copy these into the download folder on the phone and install via TWRP recovery correct? Modem first then firmware? This will then put lollipop on the phone correct?
Then if I want to install a new ROM I need to do a full wipe. I just did not see that option and was just following the video tutorial associated with the Sabermod thread by wiping cache system and dalvik
Read your thread and will be doing a full nandroid & EFS back up prior to do any of the above
Thanks again

Yes, install via TWRP recovery. It doesn't matter which order you flash them in. So install both, then go to the reboot menu, and select to reboot back to the recovery. This doesn't install Lollipop as such, this installs Lollipop compatible firmware.

Very good, that's super important. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes the EFS partition will just randomly become corrupt, if you don't have a backup in that situation your phone is useless (you can't use someone else's EFS backup because it contains unique device identifiers).

Reading about back ups etc on the below when creating a recovery
-Make sure you check the md5 to verify its integrity.
How and what do you check?
Also I first do the back up. Then install the firmware and modems and then update the ROM.
I dont need to flash the stock kernal or fastboot images, correct?
Also doing a back up does it back it up to an internal SD Card or should I keep it on PC

Cheers

The download page for a ROM or kernel usually lists the md5 checksum for that particular file. An md5 is like a digital fingerprint of the file, so once you've downloaded it you use an md5 checking app/program to confirm that the md5 of the downloaded file matches the md5 listed on the download page. This confirms that the file hasn't become corrupt during the download, if even a single byte of information is corrupt in a file the md5 will be drastically different.
You don't need to flash the stock kernel or stock images, the numbered parts in my guide aren't steps, they're sections.
When you create your nandroid backup using TWRP it will automatically be saved to your internal storage. You should keep at least one backup on your phone at all times, think of it as an insurance policy just in case something goes wrong, you'l always have a known working OS there to save you. You should also copy it to your PC for safe keeping.

Ok so the ROM I downloaded is called cm-12-20150324-ROBBIEL811-UBER4.8-bacon and is in zip format and the download link on the developers page is dead so I cannot check the md5 file?
Thanks

Well yeah, if you can't reach the download page there's no way to see what the md5 is. Not all download pages have it anyway, they should, but not all do.

[Completed] Restore OS After Wiping System Partition - Galaxy S5

Due to problems with Google Services on my rooted Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) I opted for a reset from TWRP and it returned to a condition where after some initial screens it was just stuck at "Checking for Updates" so I went back into TWRP and told it to wipe the other partitions. Whoops - now I have no OS (I was sort of assuming that the factory reset OS was somewhere else)
Which is the stock ROM for my Region - UK, unbranded - where do I get it from and how do I load it using Odin and/or TWRP?
TIA
Hello,
Did you make a nandroid backup of your stock ROM or a nandroid backup of a custom ROM if you installed one? If you have a nandroid backup of either of those then you can restore them in TWRP by choosing the restore option and then your nandroid then swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen. If you installed a custom ROM at any time before this and you still have the ROM file then you can reflash the ROM and Gapps.
If you don't have a custom ROM stored anywhere but can still get to recovery, then you can download any of the custom ROMs compatible with your device and a Gapps package that matches it and put them on your extsdcard then boot to recovery and flash the ROM and gapps, do the normal wipes in recovery after flashing, the normal wipes(wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache), DO NOT CHOOSE THE ADVANCED OPTIONS THAT LET YOU WIPE PARTITIONS.
Check this thread to see if it is your stock firmware, it SHOULD be but double check first, it also has instructions for rooting again and installing recovery.

If that doesn't work then go to Sammobile.com and search for your stock firmware by using your device model number.
The firmwares can sometimes be found at samsung-updates.com also.
Find the right firmware for your exact model number and flash through Odin.
For further assistance, post your question in the forum linked below.

Good luck.

Sadly not - wasn't expecting to need it, thought it would revert to factory default - I have Titanium backup of apps and data.
I am hopefully a few minutes away from downloading the stock ROM and hopefully can reflash that using ODIN.

Making nandroid backups in recovery is the most important and valuable function of custom recovery, flashing ROMs is its' secondary purpose Android is not like PC with a recovery partition that restores a factory IMG, on PC that factory IMG is stored in a recovery partition. The factory reset feature in stock android does not restore an IMG, it deletes all data from the user partition and leaves everything in system partition the way it is, if you delete a system app and then do a factory reset then you will still not have the system app that you deleted. Anything you modify in system remains the way you modified it if you use the factory reset option. You should only use the factory reset in recovery, not the factory reset in system settings when you have a rooted device with custom recovery.
I'm sure that when you found the recovery, the directions had to have mentioned making a nandroid backup of your stock ROM before flashing anything, your present situation is why you do that, so that if anything goes wrong then you can easily restore to the one ROM that you know for sure works with no issues.

I installed the TWERP recovery as part of the rooting operation and I didn't pay any attention to the backup option - I thought that's what Titanium did.
I am learning and will make sure that I take a Nandroid backup once I have it back up and running. Life would be so much simpler if only Samsunng didn't stuff their 'phones with bloatware that can't be deleted in stock mode.

Titanium backup can only backup data that you installed or downloaded, it does not backup anything that comes on the phone itself, that is what custom recovery is for.
When following guides to mod your device, read and understand ALL instructions before you even make the first move to touch your device. Get used to being thorough about reading and understanding first or you'll end up in a mess, possibly even hard brick your device, all it takes is one wrong move. Not all mistakes are fixable with android devices.

System UI stopped

Edited the build.prop file by adding 1 line, restarted phone and now I keep getting System UI has stopped message.
Any way I can edit the file to fix my phone?
Have you tried to clear the cache in recovery? If that doesn't work, try a full factory reset.
If the phone is running a stock rom, try flashing just the system.img file in fastboot.
Before doing any of this, make sure you backup your data.

Thank you, I ended up backing up the data and cache via USB, then did a flash of Cataclysm ROM. I'll let you know if it works.
Can I just restore the data ASAP after installation or do I need Google to finish restoring my backup first?
Edit: Well, restored data, stuck with the boot screen loop again, then goes to Android is upgrading... and shows it optimizing 10 apps, and back to the boot logo.
Did the phone boot without restoring data?

No, I made sure it was completed.
Now Play Store keeps quitting when I try to install apps. I can only install specific ones.
I recommend flashing a stock rom to make sure there isn't a hardware problem. Don't restore anything until you are sure the phone works.

Alright, I was able to get all my apps installed besides United Airlines and can't update Chrome.
So the stock rom works fine?

Yes, thank you.
I don't think I want to do another custom ROM for now.
The stock rom is the best with the bloat taken out .I think the kernel can be improved though. I use EX

All EMUI backups are unbootable when restored to

Throughout my phone's lifetime, I've made a lot of backups, most of which have ended up saved on my hard drive. I recently wanted to go back to stock from a custom rom, so I copied one of the emui backups over and restored to it. Everything seemed to go smoothly, no error messages, but attempting to boot only got stuck on the blue honor boot animation. Tried several other backups, some rooted and heavily customized, some fresh unmodded installs, but all of them did the same thing. Meanwhile, all my custom rom backups work just fine. What gives?
I tried it too and it doesn't work. I think its because to install a custom ROM we format the data using twrp which also removes the encryption of some sorts, when we restore the backup that encryption is lost so it stays stuck at the blue Honor logo. That's my two sense on this. I don't know the real details.

That does make more sense than anything I've thought of so far. So to restore from one of these backups, would I just have to reinstall emui from scratch first to get that encryption back? Is there another way to restore them without first having emui? Or are they just useless now?

I haven't been able to find a solution to this. What I do is use firmware finder to download the firmware+region zip and then install them together in any order via twrp. By this process you lose the data and twrp too as it is replaces by stock recovery. Before booting you must try to get into the stock recover and hit factory reset. You'll get EMUI back but no matter what you do you won't get your data back. Twrp backup is helpless I think because I've tried all sorts of things to get my data back.

I've tried flashing emui firmware through twrp before and the region zip always works, but I've never gotten it to load the update.zip (using adb sideload for everything). But I'll try a few different things and see if I can get that to work. Getting back to emui is my primary focus since most of my data is backed up somewhere else, but if I find a way to successfully restore data from backups I'll let you know.

What I'm telling is probably the easiest way let me break it down for you again.
1. Download firmware+region zip file from firmware finder.
2. Go to twrp, clear everything (format data).
3. Install the two downloaded zip I usually flash firmware and then the region zip.
4. After installation is over don't reboot go back to twrp home screen and reboot to recovery, which will be stock.
5. Format data using stock recover and then clear cache.
6. Restart and everything should work.
And if you find a way to get the twrp backups do post here.
