Rooted G930F update w/o messing up CSC? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi,
I've a G930F stock rooted with TWRP and SuperSU. The phone has the DBT (Germany unbranded) CSC. I'm looking for a "least effort" way to update it with Odin w/o having to restore data all the time.
What I tried:
Flash whole stock firmware (AP, BL, CP, CSC (not HOME_CSC))
reboot right back into download mode
flash TWRP
Boot into TWRP
Flash SuperSU
Reboot phone
This works at a first glance, but messes up my CSC. Apparently the DBT CSC is a multi CSC, containing DTM (Germany T-Mobile) as well. My phone has some T-Mobile specific configuration entries and CSC-dependent stuff like entering *#1234# in the phone app to get the CSC no longer work.
What does work:
Flash whole stock firmware (AP, BL, CP, CSC (not HOME_CSC))
Reboot phone
Phone now does a factory reset and encrypts /data
Reboot into download
Flash TWRP
Reboot into TWRP
Format data and restore data backup
Flash SuperSU
Reboot phone
Afterwards the update is complete and the CSC is good. But I'd like to avoid the additional steps.
When searching in the forum I got the impression that flashing the HOME_CSC instead of the CSC might be the solution in my case. Can anyone confirm this?
Where exactly does the G930F store the "active CSC" in case of a mutil-CSC? Apparently my short way to update the phone destroys that information.

@Vardion
I wonder if you got your problem solved?
I happen to have the same firmware as you and also want to manually update - since I got twrp and Magisk, Sammy withholds the security updates for me.
As Roberto W. pointed out to me flashing only the CSC_HOME.... from the downloaded firmware should do the job. The same information actually appears at the SamMobile site which states in Point (2) to the right:
Add each file to it's respective field in Odin v3.13.3. Use CSC_*** if you want to do a clean flash or HOME_CSC_*** if you want to keep your apps and data.
Do let me know how things worked out.
Cheers!

Firmware files - what are the AP, BL, files for?

So I downloaded the latest XSA update which came out yesterday on SamMobile, and flashed all four files - only to find that my phone had been wiped, including my /data partition :'(
So my question is - what are the four categories of files to flash in Odin (AP, BL, CSC, HOME)? And which one is responsible for me losing my data?
If you flash CSC will wipe your data. If you flash CSC_HOME will not wipe your data.
AP: is your system partition with recovery and stuff.
BL: your bootloader
CP: your modem
CSC: this is what features you get in some countries or carriers like Wi-Fi Calling.

Thanks for that. So can I flash the CSC file under CSC_HOME?

Yes. In the CSC slot you put the HOME_CSC file

No, you must always flash the 4 files!
If your CSC is XSA:
AP, BL, CP & HOME_CSC_XSA
Then your data will stay intact!
Note: this can only be done if you stay at the same CSC; if you want to change your CSC for any reason, you need to flash CSC-file of the new country/region (that will reset your device)
Re-partition?
Do I have to enable the "RE-PARTITION" option in ODIN when changing CSC?

Hi mate
It is recommended , changing to a total different CSC may need a change in partition size...
For more info read here

Mix and match?
Just wondering, could it be possible to mix and match?
Example: Flash the AP of T-Mobile and the CP of AT&T? To avoid incompatible band problems

Hi
For what I understand all USA ( Snapdragon) versions are compatible , so that would possible BUT to be sure you should ask in the right forum , this is for the international version Exynos
What is the UMS
What is the UMS part of ODIN?
EVERYONE HAVING PROBLEMS TYPING EXIT
Before typing "setsid su<enter>?, type the following: "alias a='exit'<enter>" and THEN type "setsid su<enter>".
IF you do this, you can exit root shell by just "a<enter>", which is cake easy to do.

Read some threads, the instructions are literally everywhere, they are even under the download on sammobile site, which means you have not read anything
Better off using odin.

Download XEF firmware for your phone, and flash all 4 files (BL, CP, AP and CSC). It should go back to normal state.

Questions regarding Odin flashing and changing CSC

Hello and thanks for looking at this thread! I am a longtime Android user and have recently switched from Note 4 to S7. The Note 4 was DBT so I had no doubts about flashing and before that I had a Nexus 4 that was a breeze to update via fastboot or TWRP.
I got my phone from a carrier Vip Mobile in Serbia (CSC TOP). Since the latest software update is from August, I would like to switch it to BTU in order to get all the security patches and prepare the phone to get Nougat in a timely fashion.
Here is detailed FW info:
Model SM-G930F
Model name Galaxy S7
Country Serbia (VIP)
Version Android 6.0.1
Changelist 8888212
Build date Tue, 09 Aug 2016 09:46:20 +0000
Security Patch Level 2016-08-01
Product code TOP
PDA G930FXXU1BPH6
CSC G930FTOP1BPH1
I have a couple of questions to experienced users:
1. Is it enough to just flash bl, cp, ap and csc? From what I read, there is no more need for pit files since they are incorporated into CSC. For older models like S6 Edge I had to use a pit file to switch from carrier to DBT fw.
2. If I decide not to use OTA later, am I right in understanding that I can just flash the AP file and keep my CSC and Data? The reason I'm asking is that on the Note 4, there were sometimes radio problems if you flashed the ap without the corresponding bootloader and radio.
3. Were there any feature and stability updates between August and December that you noticed or were they just security patches?
Any input from people that are experienced with Odin or switching regions is higly appreciated. I am sorry for the long post but I would like to give all the pertinent information to best understand the process. Thank you all in advanced and happy holidays!
If you are about to change the CSC you should do it the following way:
Download and flash the new firmware. Put AP, BL, CP and CSC (not home_CSC) in appropriate places in Odin. Do not change the default settings in Odin. The CSC contains the pit file needed to partition the memory right. Always flash all the files, do not flash only one file and you are more unlikely to run into problems. If you in the future want to flash an update with the same csc as already is on the phone, you can then use the home_csc and this way you will be able to keep all data and it will be just like an OTA update.
After the flash boot into recovery (vol+, home, power) and then delete cache partition and after that wipe data/factory reset. Then reboot. This is important as this step will set the csc to the new default csc of the newly flashed firmware. Unfortunately, there is no way to choose csc if it is a multi-csc firmware, it will set the default csc for this multi-csc. I think that the BTU is a single csc firmware so in this case you are good and the phone will pick up updates OTA for the BTU in the future.
I changed the csc of my S7 and before I had made the last steps into recovery my phone did not have a csc at all as I checked with Phone Info. The csc fields were simply empty and I would not have been sent any OTA updates after this. I got this important step from Greenman at the SamMoble forum.
Thank you for the great guide! I guess I will then wait a bit for Nougat to start rolling out. Based on Note experience I would like to do a factory reset at that point anyway because of the major changes.

DBT region receives firmware with OXM multi-CSC, which also includes TPH CSC (Portugal), so there should not be any issues.
Flash
I loaded the .tar files into Odin.
Auto Reboot is checked.
F.Reset Time is checked.
Everything else is unchecked.
After my phone boots into download mode do i have to press anything on it or i just press start on Odin ?
The only phone that i have flashed was my Galaxy S in 2010 and i haven't done anything like this before.

Use HOME_CSC not CSC, however, if there would be any issue during the upgrade, the storage would show only 16GB and you would have to do a factory reset anyway. If you are going to try to do the upgrade, I strongly recommend backing up your data.

Yes, the firmware for any regions included within OXM multi-CSC is the same.
For variant G950FD i neeed to use this same firm, right?
EDIT: i did this method and works fine. But the baseband was not to be CRB7? My phone says baseband G950FXXU1CRAP and the compilation number said R16NW.GF50FXXU1CRB7. Does its good?

Yes, that's right. Samsung did not update modem firmware or CSC package. Only bootloader and AP (system) were updated.
I flashed Oreo CRB7 final build from Germany and everything is great. But notifications for viber doesnt work as supposed. When i snooze them for only 15 minutes they never appear again and even after 2 hours when i open viber app i have new messages for which i didnt get notification neither sound and stays like that. But when i restart phone everything becomes normal untill i snooze some notification again. I did clean install, clear cash twice and factory reset the phone before Oreo.
Followed the instructions from this site step by step (it was flashing with extracting .lz4 extensions). Help?

Flash latest official Samsung FW over Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F) via Odin?

Hello!
I run Samsung's official FW build R16NW.G930XXS3ERL7, latest Magisk, and some root apps (incl. Xposed Framework, e.g. AFWall+, Firefds Kit [set to fake device status to "Official", but the info further below - above the charging status "DC 9 V; 1.67 A" - nevertheless shows "RATED"], MinMinGuard, XPrivacyLua). From time to time, apps get force-closed and my device gets slow.
Now I wonder if it would help to flash the latest available official FW from Samsung for my device right over the existing one. We call this "dirty-flash", right?
Would you agree that this works or would you rather wipe everything (after backing up essential data, of course) and do a clean flash?
The latter would give me the opportunity to clean up unneeded stuff.
How should I backup the device's many settings and the individual apps' settings? I do not like the available cloud services from Google or Samsung to backup settings and I heard that restoring apps' settings later via e.g. TitaniumBackup (I have the paid pro version) could cause severe problems. Any alternatives (for restoring device's and apps' settings?
In any case, I would first do a binary backup via TWRP to be able to revert everything if nothing works after flashing.
Do you have any other hints for me?
Thank you so much!
PS: Sorry if this is the wrong place/forum for my questions. In that case, I would like to politely ask the moderators to move my post to where it fits better (and might attract more attention/replies )
Dirty flashing usually refers to flashing in TWRP over top the existing install without wiping.
But if you flash via Odin, depending what you flash, it will either be a full wipe and load. Or it will update the same way an OTA update applies.
Also from memory if you flash AP in Odin it's going to blow away your TWRP and restore it to stock recovery, so make sure you copy your TWRP backup off the device before continuing.
If just going official Samsung to another official Samsung FW, then TitaniumBackup should work fine.
Thanks for your reply!
Am I right that I can flash TWRP via Odin immediately after having flashed the new Samsung firmware also via Odin?
Which of the CSC files is the one that should be flashed via Odin (AP) so as not to loose settings etc.? If my recollection is correct, there are usually 2 flavours of the CSC file in the firmware package, one of them to flash with wiping everything, the other to fish as if it was an update (like OTA). Right?
Can a custom kernel also be flashed via Odin? Which first: kernel, then new firmware, then TWRP or in another order?
Thanks once more for your hints!

HOME_CSC won't wipe anything, if you flash just CSC it will wipe all your data. Flash kernel in twrp.
1st - New firmware, 2nd - TWRP, 3rd - kernel.

The error is related to the vbmeta check. Did you used a sock firmware or you have patched it with magisk? Btw i reccomend to use frija to download the firmware.
If i can suggest I would make this steps:

2) Flash the stock and see if it work
Otherwise if this not help:
1) download latest firmware with frija
2) patch the whole ap and not only boot.img with magisk
3) open odin and flash it using the patched ap on the ap slot
If nothing above works, I think you can try this... not sure it will work. Replace inside the ap the vbmeta.img with the attached one that have the disabled verified boot.

1- The firmware is stock.
2- I didn't patch any of the files I got ( any recommended guide on how to proceed>?)
3- I' so new at this
But anyways, yesterday I kind of sorted out the stuck by adding BL file, and CSC file along the AP file to ODIN, the phone restarted ok but found out it hasn't been unlocked from the carrier yet, so I guess that by judging what u just said, there are few thing I need a guide to
- Flashing the stock
- Patching the AP file
Ps Frija opens up when executed, but it closes in less than 1 second. (Pc 's OS: win 10 enterprise 64 bits)

When you flash with Odin you always need to use all the files provided on the stock firmware ap, bl, csc and cp. If u are upgrading you can use the home_csc instead of the csc file that will let you keep your data.
Are you sure you have installed the framework that Frija need?
For the ap patching, is only meant if you want root your phone, flashing the whole ap instead of the boot.img only will let you fix the vbmeta checks too.
Install the magisk app.
Open it and tap Install, it will ask for a file to patch, chose the ap file of the stock firmware you downloaded.
Final step, flash ap patched and the others (bl,csc,cp).
When you say unlocked by the carrier what do you mean? You have any sort of sim block? Or you only want remove your carrier apps and configs?

I rooted my tab 5Se a long time ago and deleted the firmware files except the AP.
I got stuck on the same screen today when I re-locked my bootloader after a stock AP-only flash
Then I saw your reply here and got the rest of the files flashed and it worked and booted
And for those who are reading if you don't have a SIM on your tablet you don't need a CP that's why you won't find it in your firmware zip file
