Can't update with OTA zip.

I'm on the XT1540 and I got my OTA notification and went back to stock recovery (still rooted and unlocked bootloader) but it fails halfway through flashing everytime. I reflashed TWRP and captured the OTA into a zip but get an error about updating binary or something when flashing it. Is there something I need to delete from the OTA zip to allow it to flash in twrp?
Sent from my MotoG3 using xda premium
You cannot update your systems software using the OTA update if you are rooted and have modified the system in any way as there are checks of original system during the auto update over the OTA. This means having the original recovery too. Wont work on TWRP or CWM. So no root and no custom recovery for OTA. Unlocked bootloader is okay.
In case you want to try the OTA update then what I have noticed on my XT1550 dual sim APAC version is that even unrooting it using the SuperSu unroot option is not going to help. In my case I could download the OTA and waited till it replaced the system software but got stuck midway of the boot animation.
I had to flash the 23.72-33 version of the stock ROM and opt for the OTA update. This time though I was successful.
Hope this info helps.
Yes, what arunhebbare says. you need to back up al your data and restore your stock firmware and than update via ota.
that is the best way of doing it

This...do a full factory image restore, then adb sideload the ota file. It's signed. TWRP can't install it.
Just use fastboot to flash the factory image for the version you want ... screw wiping your user partition like the above recommends.

This...I can't understand, for the life of me, why everyone is wiping userdata with fastboot....that wipes your android data, and internal storage in one shot. Cache erasing is another totally unnecessary step. All that's necessary, at the most, is a factory reset with TWRP to wipe the android data and both caches....but even that shouldn't technically be necessary for an update like this. It's not like this is the marshmallow update!!

@arunhebbare I've got the APAC version of the G3 as well, which ROMs are you flashing? I could only find images of the India version, did you use those?

See: https://source.android.com/devices/tech/ota/ab_updates
Once the OTA is successfully applied and you boot into Oreo then the new working system is copied automatically to the other partition (this is what is happening when you see the 'completing update' progress bar after booting into the new system.
This makes sure that the partitions are ready for the next A/B OTA update.
The old system files are only kept on the other partition until the new system boots successfully, the old system is then overwritten.
It's not a way to roll back a successful update. It's a way to recover from an unsuccessful update.

Will work with sideload too, right?
hi
2WildFirE will this update patch can use and support for Nokia 8 TA-1004 Dual sim, i'm from malaysia region...
Unluckily it errors when installing on an unlocked phone....I unrooted it fully, rebooted to recovery and it errors always. Should I relock the bootloader to install OTAs?
No, you do not need to block the boot loader. You need to flash the previous full update 4.88B. And then upgrade to OTA.
I am already on 4.88B (rooted with magisk). No modification has been made on /system partition. I uninstalled magisk and rebooted: in theory that should be enough but in practice it does not work....

It won't if this is block-based OTA as Magisk modifies boot partition (with Android kernel and in A/B case recovery too). Quote from Android official documentation: "block OTA handles the entire partition as one file and computes a single binary patch".
Sure, but I uninstalled magisk thus restoring original boot partition before trying to apply OTA...

does this firmware are support for Nokia 8 TA-1004 dual sim...??
End of the story: I reflashed the full 4.88B OTA update and immediately after the new june patch: it always gives an error. Tried to install the june patch by OTA, and it errors in the same way. I have the doubt that the new patch is allowed to check the bootloader and if it founds it unlocked, an error arises. Anyone confirming that?

Ok, I assume that noone had problems in updating to the june security patches with an unlocked bootloader, so there must be a problem with my device......
Ok I managed to update to june security patches with this file......Had to reflash both slots (A/B) with the full june camera update (4.88B), then I updated through recovery and it worked. Glad to tell that the system is fully tested and working.
No news about July security patch?

have you tried switching slots? it sure wont solve the issue stated but it may restore the usability of your expensive brick
Code:
If you are currently on slot A, type this: fastboot --set-active=_b
Or on slot B type this: fastboot --set-active=_a
No Switch with locked bootloader ?
Nothing work on fastboot with locked bootloader....
issue solved using OST LA 6.0.4

Need help ?
More info ?
Comment Below !
You might like to directly flash the NPJS25.93-14-18 April 2018 stock firmware after flashing the April 2018 GPT and bootloader, and not advise to flash older firmware. The reason is the April 2018 GPT/bootloader is from the NPJS25.93-14-18 firmware, so you're not mixing and matching GPT, bootloaders and firmware - if you are mix and matching firmware, that may lead to more bricking if you're not careful. Link to the NPJS25.93-14-18 firmware https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138
Of course, if you flashed the Oreo soak test at any point using the OTA updates, this procedure may not work. If you used the TWRP flashable, you may be okay if you did not use the Oreo OTA update - TWRP flashables don't update the bootloader. The Oreo OTA would update your bootloader to Oreo, which we don't have the GPT/bootloader files for yet.

Does Root Stay after Update?

Does root stay after an ota update with oneplus or will I have to re-root?
I had to reroute my Nexus 6p after an update
Of course. You will have to root again. Doing an update will install the stick kernel for that Fournette, hence removing the patched boot partition changes. You will have a stock boot partition and kernel.
Also, for OTA, won't work with a modified boot partition. You need the full ROM to flash in system update>local upgrade or in TWRP if you have that installed
