Magisk v16 is out! - Xiaomi Mi A1 Guides, News, & Discussion

I was pleasantly surprised that the updating process is made very simple and seamless by the developers. All steps are done within the Magisk Manager app itself. Just follow the prompts in the app and all shall be good! :good:
1. Update Magisk Manager app to v5.6.1(105)
2. Update Magisk to v16 -- choose Direct install (recommended)
3. Reboot and profit!

Comeon did we really need this thread. Have you even read the changelog?
Until and unless changelog mentions something about mi a1 your didn't have to create this thread.
And its an app that can self update.

Well, on the other hand, it is not a general news area for everything happening in the world. It is with regard to mi a1.
Can you imagine one thread for every app and utility update that is out there?
Magisk has it's own news thread. That should be enough.
I know this will not change anything around here. So... let's not open a never-ending discussion here too like in many other threads. Mods can decide what to do with these kind of threads.

Magisk is important enough for Mi A1 i think...
Many ROMs can't boot without Magisk or i've missed anything?
Anyway, it's not really important for me, i just hate rude answers (not from you.)

ROM's are supposed to boot without magisk.
Magisk is used to get root access. Its not a necessity in any rom and never ever will be.

I have read alot of rom threads.
Okay here's what you can do ask any rom developer. Is magisk necessary for a rom to boot.
And we are talking about custom ROMs only right?
Cause stock roms aren't shipped with magisk installed. If you got one with magisk pre-installed. Then you should contact your seller about that.

Magisk is sometimes required to disable secure boot for modded stock ROMs, so I'd say that @N1ck474 is technically right. Custom ROMs shipped with custom boot.img shouldn't need that. So @alkesh95 is probably right as well.

I am sorry to say this but he is not technically right.
Custom ROM designed for a device should never need magisk or any other external package to boot.
Everything necessary to boot is in the rom already.
Magisk required to disable secure boot for modded stock ROM:
No offence to any developer. But modded stock ROM is a patch job(it still requires a lot of work & time i am aware of that).
Okay my final statement.
Any rom which has atleast passed alpha/beta testing should not need magisk to boot.
That's how it was designed.

Ok, but as there is not a single custom ROM for A1 which has passed alpha/beta phase, they require Magisk.

Refer to previous posts.
Experimental builds (or alpha/beta builds) are for testing purposes only.
Anything done to an experimental build cannot be considered as general solution for the ROM(Custom/Stock).
No.
PS: This is fun.

Oh come on, just admit it finally Magisk is required for whatever reason on many, if not all custom ROMs released for Mi A1 as of today. They can be alpha, untested, testing, secret, whatever status we call them, but they need Magisk to be able to boot
Yeah, it's fun, we basically agree with each other, it's just playing with words

[ROM] 7.1.2 AOSP Extended v4.6 [Addison] [09/20] (Final Nougat Release)

I am not the ROM developer or anything, I'm just a user and a fan so please don't bother asking me anything. I'm just creating this thread here because there isn't one for this ROM and I thought every one here should know it exists because it is the best ROM for our device imo.
You can get it here: http://downloads.aospextended.com/addison
I use Beans Gapps with it (Mini) but I guess you can use Open Gapps as well.
For root I install Magisk beta that can be downloaded from here. Simply flash the zip with TWRP and it'll install everything. Safetynet all green.
It comes with Pixel Launcher by default when you use Beans Gapps mini. I can't tell about other combinations because I haven't tried them.
Also you can find the devs on their official Google Plus page here: https://plus.google.com/communities/106726906578669931141
Im using it with nano gapps and it is also comes with pixel launcher.

You really should have the developer post a thread if they want their work circulated, this way the rom can be supported. otherwise people have no one to turn to if they do have an issue.
thanks for making this thread, i didn't even know AOSP Extended was available for the Z Play, i used it on my X 2014 and i loved it, i will definitely try it.

The idea is not to report you but to educate. It is not polite to pass along someone else's work without their permission and then refer people to another forum. You could have just mentioned the rom and then asked for direct messaging to then supply the link to whom wanted it. Other wise this is a complete unsupported rom here on XDA. It always seems the simple things slip the mind.
Thank you

Magisk in stock B389

Right, just a quick question:
Does Magisk works with stock ROM B389? I've read a lot about Magisk, but most, if not all, is referring to 3rd party ROM's with Magisk, not stock.
And the reason why I want stock, although removing some GAPPS, is because I do appreciate a lot the timed shutdown and boot-up: saves phone's battery and my head from radiation while I sleep. But I also want to keep Android Pay, so...
thanks in advance.

Yes, but stock only. I haven´t root it yet and I don´t know if I will. Besides Adaway and unistalling some Google Apps I don´t know what else I would gain.
And I would also have to be careful for Magisk not to break FingerPrint scanner or smart button. A reboot would fix it, but anyway something to be concerned about.

No, I'm not using it. I've no intentions in using any custom rom, because I really like the clean Android One.
You can use any fingerprint, it's only to trick safetynet.

I don't use either of these features so I wouldn't be able to tell you. But I think there's a VoLTE-enable version of HavocOS in the GSI subforums. Have not tried it however.
I need to check something with everyone:
Has someone else had a bug where they can't install anything into the system partition due to lack of space? I wanted to use Google Assistant but to have full features I need to make it a system app, faster way would be to flash nano-gapps but when I do it tells me I'm out of space in /system/. Is it just me?
Also, edited faq with How-To check SELinux status.

Install Edxposed installer apk https://www.coolapk.com/apk/com.solohsu.android.edxp.manager (YES YOU CAN FIND IT ELSE WERE BUT I ACTUALLY USE COOL APK)
Magisk:
Install Riru core(don't reboot)
Install Riru Edxposed )Reboot)
Open the edxposed installer app and find the modules tab
Click the activate tab and reboot
That's all I did and it was immediately working upon reboot.

This is the link posted in the thread as a test build for the t-Mobile variant because the official app didn't work. There has since been a another official release that I haven't tested but other users have confirmed it working. Just follow the instructions as postedhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1UcXBiCWw4q4IkWZhqy1M_YoAZO2Bqvmt/view
Install the opAOD app from the link above
Install Edxposed installer apk https://www.coolapk.com/apk/com.solohsu.android.edxp.manager (YES YOU CAN FIND IT ELSE WERE BUT I ACTUALLY USE COOL APK)
Magisk:
Install Riru core(don't reboot)
Install Riru Edxposed )Reboot)
Open the edxposed installer app and find the modules tab
Click the activate tab and reboot
That's all I did and it was immediately working upon reboot.

Awesome thanks. Is there a way to change it to 12 hour and also is it possible to schedule the aod to come on at a certain time? Bi know you aren't the developer but figured I'd ask anyway.

No for 12 hour for now. As far as turning on at certain times that is also a no but you can disable with a simple tap. With that I would suggest setting regular alarms to just touch the phone to disable and enable AOD, or somehow using Tasker which I have no patience to do, to set active times. My recommendation is to just tap the screen to disable when you don't need it. It's a tool after all and not a gimmicky feature
