[GUIDE] Upgrade from EMUI 4.1/Android 6.0 to latest firmware - Huawei P9 Guides, News, & Discussion

It took me 2 full days to finally successfully upgraded my ancient firmware (L09C16B170) to the updated version (L09C432B397). There are a lot pieces of information that I gathered from this forum and all over the internet that collectively helped me navigate this ordeal. Just want to share it with anyone who is in the same boat, although I know that P9 won't last for too long since P10 has been out for a while. However, if you still want to revive your P9, keep reading.
Requirement
Before reading, you need to understand ways of entering different modes of your P9 phone, which will be used many many times during your upgrade:
Enter recovery mode (also how you enter TWRP) - see this GUIDE
Enter fastboot mode - see this GUIDE
Enter manual upgrade mode (also called dload method; This is NOT TWRP method) - see this GUIDE. Please IGNORE any software or download information in this guide. I want you to refer to this guide for how to do it, NOT what to use or download!
You also need to download and know how to use ADB tool which is quite simple. Search the forum or google and you will find plenty of information and the download links. If you hate command lines, you can even use the GUI version from here.
You will probably also need to use Firmware Finder for Huawei (HWFF) to download firmware of interest for manual update during this process. HWFF is an app that can be installed for free via your phone Google Play Store. The downloaded firmware is saved under the HWFF folder in the internal memory. You might need to unzip these files for upgrade via dload method or directly via TWRP method without unzipping. However TWRP method requires you to unlock the bootloader and install TWRP in the phone (see below for details).
First step - debranding
If you are already on C432xxxx, you might just skip this step. I followed this thread partially (Debranding Guide by Z-Blade), since the whole thing doesn't work for me 100%.
Z-Blade did a fantastic job describing how to debrand his C34 firmware to C342B361. My original version is C16B170 which is a South Africa branded firmware. But I found certain steps in this guide could be omitted and certain steps didn't work in my case. Here is my modified version based on Z-Blade's version:
1. Unlock your bootloader and install TWRP
How to unlock bootloader? Follow this GUIDE. Even though it's for Huawei Ascend XT. It works for P9 as well. You only need to complete Part 1.
After you unlock the bootloader, install TWRP. Depending on which firmware version you're on, the version of TWRP that might work for your device changes. I encountered numerous booting loops due to incorrect version of TWRP. Finally I found that these three versions work for me (3.1.0-0, 3.1.1-0, 3.1.1-1). Always go with the highest version first (3.1.1-1). If you find yourself stuck in the booting screen, long press your power button until you get out of it and install another version of TWRP. Please go to TWRP official website to download TWRP for Huawei P9. Follow this GUIDE to install TWRP recovery on your phone.
2. Flash OEM info file for C432
After you unlock the bootloader and install TWRP recovery, download oeminfo-huawei-p9-eval09-c432.zip from this THREAD and flash it via TWRP method.
3. Flash C432B136 firmware
Download and flash the dload-huawei-p9-eval09-eva-b136.zip via dload method from this thread. After flashing and rebooting your phone, you should be on the L09C432B136 firmware. NOTE: If it boots up to a white screen asking you to enter password, reboot into recovery by holding volume up when you powering up your phone, do a wipe partition and factory reset. You may need to reboot your phone a number times before the phone boots up correctly.
Up to this stage, you have debranded your phone to an european version.
Second step - stepwise firmware upgrade
1. Update from B136 to B166 or B182
As mentioned in Z-Blade's original post, many people will not be able to directly update from B136 to B182. I am one of them. Go into the updater in the phone setting, refresh "check for update". If you can receive B182 update, by all means go for it. If you only receive B166 update, go for it as well. After B166 update and rebooting your phone, check updater again to see if you receive B182 update in the Settings menu. If this method does not work, manually update to B182 by following the steps here via dload method.
2. Update firmware from B182 to B360/361/378 and also upgrade OS from Android 6.0/EMUI 4.1.x to Android 7.0/EMUI 5.0
According to Z-Blade, "After your phone has rebooted and you are on the B182 firmware, you need to now update the firmware to B361 via Huawei Updater 2.0". However, in my case, I tried many times and always failed at this step. I found a workaround by updating to B360 instead of B361. Please follow this GUIDE to update to B360 or B361, whichever works for you. However, please pay attention to following change that I found critical:
- The version of Huawei HiSuite is critical for the success in this step. The GUIDE provided Hisuite download link (version 5.0.0.301_OVE). However, it does not work together with Huawei Updater 2.0 in my hands. This error has wasted me almost half day. Instead, I finally found out the problem and went to HERE to download the version 5.0.1.300 and it finally worked
- However, if even after HiSuite and Updater both work together fine the update does not proceed successfully (the updater might get stuck), you need to update it manually via dload method. Search EVA-L09C432B360 or EVA-L09C432B361 in Firmware Finder for Huawei as mentioned above and download the Full-OTA version (~2G). After download, move the corresponding folder containing firmware zip files under "HWFF" folder in the internal memory to the external SD card. Unzip the firmware file and update your phone using dload method. You may also try TWRP method which can install zip files directly, but at this point, you bootloader will be re-locked and TWRP will be gone. You need to unlock the bootloader and re-install TWRP again as mentioned above.
After you successfully update the firmware to B360 or B361, now you should have Android 7.0 and EMUI 5.0 on your phone. Now go to the updater in your phone setting. You should receive B378 OTA update. Proceed with the update...
You might not need to strictly follow following steps to update your phone to any firmware beyond B378. However, since a lot of new ROMs are based on B380+ or even B390+, if you want to use those, you might need to further update your firmware first.
2. Update firmware from B378 to B383
After updating to B378 and rebooting your phone, check if your phone receives B383 update OTA. If yes, proceed. If not, go to HWFF, download B383 Full-OTA firmware and update via either dload or TWRP method.
3. Update firmware from B383 to whatever later version
After successfully updating your phone to B383, you basically can flash your phone with anything firmware and ROMs built on B380+. I find it unnecessary to update to B386. What I did was that I directly updated from B383 to B394 by following this GUIDE. Since I wanted to try BlueWei 5.7 which is based off B397, I also followed the same guide to update my firmware to B397 before flashing BlueWei ROM.
Now please enjoy all kinds of new ROMs and the fast, revived P9. After this update, my P9 is super smooth (the original firmware and OS was utterly slow and sluggish) and I think I will keep using this phone until it really can't keep up with the hardware requirement of new apps etc.
Hope my guide is helpful!

Nice job to update things and summarize all together. Few comments, though
- Not necessary to go back to c432 b136, to b182 is enough:

https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72153575&postcount=2
- For Nougat, please use Huawei P9 Nougat TWRP:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/twrp-t3565703
- For DLOAD method, FullOTA-MF-PV versions should be used
- Besides the two methods listed to initiate DLOAD update, there is also a third one:
'Dial': *#*#2846579#*#*

Rollback EVA-L09/L19, from Android 7.0 EMUI 5.0 to Android 6.0 EMUI 4.1

Hello !
I found on the Romanian Huawei page this package, used to go back from 7.0 Nougat EMUI 5.0 to 6.0 Loli EMUI 4.1.
UPDATE: for both L09 and L19
It contains a pdf with instructions.
Advice from other users: use an older version of Android 6 MM
I am not responsible for any bricks.
http://consumer.huawei.com/ro/support/downloads/detail/index.htm?id=91624&key0=Mobile%20Phones&key1=Smartphones&key2=EVA-L19
DOWNLOAD
Hit " Thanks" if this helped you
INSTRUCTIONS from the pdf file:
HUAWEI
EVA-LXX EMUI5.0+Android7.0 rollback to EMUI4.1+Android 6.0
Operation instruction
The instruction guides user to roll back from Android7.0 to Android 6.0
1) Roll back operation includes twice SD card update, only through intermediate package
EVA-LXXC900B300, like below:
2) Allow roll back to Huawei official stable release.
Precautions:
1. Make sure the current system version on your phone is an official Huawei version based on Android 7.0. If your phone has been updated with a non-official version, the rollback may fail and even cause unexpected problems.
2. Make sure your phone system version has not been unlocked or rooted.
3. Your personal data will be erased during the rollback. Be sure to back up all your important data beforehand.
4. Prepare a micro SD card with available storage space at least 8 GB.
5. Make sure the battery level is higher than 30%.
6. The rollback includes two local ROM flashing procedures, first from Android 7.0 to the intermediate package version and then from the intermediate package version to Android 6.0.
Step 1: Back up data.
Your personal data will be erased during the rollback. Be sure to back up all your important data beforehand.
To back up data to your micro SD card, go to Tools > Backup, touch backup, and follow the onscreen instructions.
Step 2: Update your phone to the intermediate package version.
Obtain the EVA-LXX intermediate package (UPDATE.APP) by visiting the official EMUI website or calling the customer service hotline.
Load the UPDATE.APP package to the dload folder under your micro SD card root directory. If there is no dload folder under the directory, please create one. (Do not load the UPDATE.APP package to the internal storage.)
When the phone is powered off, press and hold the volume up, volume down, and power buttons simultaneously to enter forcible update mode. Release the buttons only after the rollback starts. Do not operate the phone during the rollback.
Step 3: Confirm the intermediate package version.
When the phone is powered on, go to Settings > About phone and check whether the displayed version number contains EVA-LXXC900B300.
Step 4: Update the phone from the intermediate package version to Android 6.0.
Download an older version of Android 6.0 full package (UPDATE.APP) for the EVA-LXX from the EMUI official website. Load the UPDATE.APP package to the dload folder under your micro SD card root directory. (Do not load the UPDATE.APP package to the internal storage.)
When the phone is powered off, press and hold the volume up, volume down, and power buttons simultaneously to enter forcible update mode. Release the buttons only after the rollback starts. Do not operate the phone during the rollback.
Step 5: Confirm the system version and restore data( better not).
When the phone is powered on, go to Settings > About phone and check whether the displayed EMUI version is EMUI 4.1 and Android version is 6.0.
Go to Tools > Backup, locate the desired backup record, and follow the onscreen instructions to restore.
It's everywhere now. Here in Bulgaria too. So hard to go back. Wish HiSuite was better and just connect your phone and install stable version, something like iTunes. I am not so advanced on Android, recently switched from iPhone and really want to test the Nougat on this beautiful phone, but if it's bad I will have to buy SD card and do all this crap just to get to stable os... Ain't worth it.
P.S: What this part means "6. The rollback includes two local ROM flashing procedures, first from Android 7.0 to the intermediate package version and then from the intermediate package version to Android 6.0." What is intermediate package version?
it means that it's a 2 step downgrade.
first you flash the update.app in the zip attached (intermidiate package ).
then you flash your desired version of Android 6.
it's not that difficult. and you can do it from the internal memory also via the 3 button combo method
It worked with my L19C432 that was running L19C432B322. Thanks.
Confirmed that it works on L09C432 to, so it's not just for L19.
I can go back to 6.0 but I can not apply theme how to solve please help
Has anyone tried this with L09c636 or L19c636?

Wonderful news, thank you!
It doesn't work with me : the rollback of B300 to B182 failed.
EDIT : In fact, it didn't work because I didn't have enough battery...
Trying this now I'm L09 C432, what a ballache!

Did you found a solution? I am experiencing the same problem. After downgrading to Android 6 themes don't work. Also i've installed L19C432B180 and when searching for an update its saying its the latest version. I upgraded to Nougat from B182 wich was an OTA update and now i can receive it anymore.
I think Nougat did something to system partion and now after downgrade not everything its working properly.
I'm on L09C432 in UK.. and was considering upgrading..
Is 7.0 N That bad... Ive read its a Leaked version, which usually means Beta... but Ive read a few forums where people are rolling back
Would you recommend staying on B182 for now...
The official beta is quite good, but you can't get in the list anymore. From what i have read, the leaked one is not that ok. I recommend 182 for now
Sent from my EVA-L19 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I had a nightmare with up and downgrade last night. I thought i've broken my new phone but i've managed it to get it working again without any problems (themes also do work here).
What have i all done, for the reason someone else have troubles with downgrading.
Tip: Do not try to backup anything, it will most likely will make things even worse. Wipe and flash without later importing backups from different builds.
My phone: P9 (L19) DualSim
New phone, directly unlocked bootloader and removed OEM protection
Installed TWRP 3.0.2.0
Opened recovery and installed directly the BETA image for my L19
Until this point all works fine. BETA image is buggy, keyboard not working and freezes sometimes
Decided to go back to stock
TWRP is not working anymore, stuck in "Your device is booting"
Always running into Huawei eRecovery, where you can do noting. Repair always fails
Downloaded latest stock image for my L19 and tried the here suggested steps
Note: Before doing the "dload" flash you need to flash stockrecovery, as far as i know and other threads suggest it too
First Update.app flash (from the zip file here) worked fine
Second Update.app flash from the stock rom stuck at 5% and closed with an error
Hours of trying different things, all not working (Other TWRP recovery version with encryption support, wipes, resets, etc...)
Last try: Download an older stock image of my L19. Flash successfully done. Phone boots now into stock rom :good:
Locked Bootloader again (i guess it have been done by the stock rom flash)
Now i'm completely back to stock - Which is currently the best available rom for this phone, IMHO.
Conclusion: The most headache i got from downloading the wrong (too new) stock image. Trying an older one have solved my flash problems.

I found the same procedure to work. What really puzzled me was that the flashing of update.app "crashed" at 5%. I also tried all sort of solutions, with only new error messages as result.
The final solution to flash an older image was not exactly obvious
i will update OP. thank you for sharing
I tried 2 versions, still gives me errors. Could someone provide the exact version of the rom used in rollback?

Don't getting update to B560 again

My Mate 8 L29 is currently on C432B192 again. I said 'again', because I was already three or four times on EMUI 5. (I tried to root it but it failed Everytime, so I had to rollback)
Yesterday I wanted to try again to root B560 and began to search for the update, but - nothing. I tried it via update app , HiCare app and HiSuite on PC. I don't get the update offered. (I also deleted data and cache of those apps)
I'm currently rooted, so I tried to unroot, install stock boot image and recovery .. but same problem: still not getting the update.
Now I'm wondering why this is happening .. I had that same case before (B192, rooted etc.) and I always got that update offered.
Does anyone have a solution for this ? ( Except the manually method via TWRP .. this was never working for me)
Thank you for your help!

You need rollback package to get it back to normal.
Since your model is L29 & you are nougat.
Go to this site http://consumer.huawei.com/sg/support/products/downloads/detail/mate-8-sg.htm?id=91647
Download the file
Extract the update.app
Make a folder on your sdcard and name it as dload
put this update.app in that sdcard
now you do the dload method
you can do it two ways
one way is
the 3 finger rule while bootup
just press volume + volume - power button together and hold until you see EMUI verifying package
then release your fingers
it will rollback to marshmallow
now you have to update it to another stock firmware (marshmallow)
remember at this point it is in global firmware it might show build number as C900 or something.
you can check it in the settings - about -> build number
you have to then update it to your model firmware
L29C185BXX
I found the stock firmware from another thread for your model
This is L29C185B200
http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G1076/g104/v65326/f1/full/update.zip
once again
download the file,
extract the update.app &
then put the update.app in dload folder on your sdcard
and then do dload method.
second way of dload is
open dialer
type *#*#2846579#*#*
click on "software upgrade"
and then -> SDcard upgrade
follow the instructions on the screen
and it will finish the dload method in next few minutes.
That's it. now you will be on Stock ROM with fully functional OS.
after this you will either get OTA updates or you can download using HiCare
or you can download the stock firmware from another thread
or
you can use firmware finder to get stock firmware for your phone. Get the latest version.
If you finish all these steps then I will tell you how to get to nougat if you have any trouble
Hope you find this information useful.

You are rooted & if I read correctly you also have TWRP installed.
If you are unlocked, rooted & have TWRP - then you can install custom roms.
but if you want stock roms, - you need Stock ROM, Stock Recovery, Locked bootloader.
First you need the rollback package from EMUI4.1 to EMI 4.0 for L29C432 is below
https://www.hidrive.strato.com/lnk/0mlDFqqy
Rollback package for L29 to downgrade from EMUI 5.0 to EMUI 4.0 marshmallow is
http://consumer.huawei.com/sg/support/products/downloads/detail/mate-8-sg.htm?id=91647
So choose the right version based on the firmware you are having on your phone. If you have nougat choose the second link and if you have any other version then choose the first link.
Download the file, extract the update.app
then you have to do dload method
create a folder named dload and put update.app in sd card
then
go to dialer
press *#*#2846579#*#*
select
sdcard upgrade
and then say yes
that's it
you will come back to stock (global) version. build version will be C900BXX
now you need stock firmware for L29C432
you can download the stock firmware from here. Below tis the link for L29C432B180
http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G1076/g104/v51244/f1/full/update.zip
Stock firmware for L29C432B192
http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G1076/g104/v63059/f1/full/update.zip
Here you have the option to either go for L29C432B180 or L29C432B192. (if you choose B192, then you will save time and reduce few steps, because you will get system update to B560 immediately once you change the region to Ireland in Hicare app)
do the dload method again
extract the file, put the file in dload folder in sdcard ,
either use dialer or use 3 button rule to finish the dload process
now you are on L29C432B180. / L29C432B192
From here you can use another dload method to go to B192 - > system update (OTA) -> B560 or B580
if you get a blank screen - > do factory reset
if you get "verification failed " in red color - > unlock bootloader again and proceed with the steps.
This rollback package will save you in case of any problems.
Once you go to nougat B560
you can update to Kangvip B577 - pre rooted rom - its awesome - Root stable , excellent battery lfie. - everything is working perfectly.
I will give you those steps and links if you succeed in getting to B560 after all these steps.
I am sorry that this is a very long post and many steps but I can assure you that it is worth.
Ultimately you will get to nougat & with full root using Kangvip B577.
Hope you succeed

Possible To Flash Oreo Rom Via TWRP Recovery?

I am currently on Android Nougat stock.
The bootloader has been unlocked and TWRP recovery has been installed.
I would like to update to Oreo but have been unable to do so.
This guide was followed [urlhttp://www.droid views.com/install-android-8-0-oreo-based-emui-8-0-huawei-mate-9/][/url] (but was unable to get past option 4) (I left a space after droid as the link is getting blocked, just put ********** together.)
''Double-click on the Replace_Recovery.bat file in the extracted HWOTA8 folder. This will install TWRP recovery on your device.''
I keep getting a failed notification when trying to do so. The handset was in fastboot mode but refuses to update recovery.
Am I able to update to Oreo with the old TWRP recovery & update it after? I am running the old Nougat version.
Option 7 I also got stuck on. '' Create a folder named HWOTA8 on your device’s internal storage.'' whilst connected via USB to the computer.
I am unable to view internal or external storage when the USB is connected to the computer. When viewing internal/external memory normally I can see items as normal in external SD card but the internal memory files all appear jibberish even in recovery.
What am I doing wrong? I have been unable to find any clear guides of how to update from Nougat to Oreo including flashing the rom, flashing recovery and root.
Thanks for those able to help.
PS. I'm a new Huawei Mate 9 owner and have only just received the device several hours ago which is why I'm rusty. Compared to my previous Sony Xperia XZ Premium it is much more complicated. Sony was far easier to flash recovery and flash roms via recovery.
I am having the MHA-L29 international version.
Device now bootloops after following the guide of flashing SuperSU in recovery. I did what was said and received ''error 9'' after flashing the files.
Now bootloop.
Good news at least recovery is working but unable to boot. How to I update to Oreo with updated recovery & root?
Otherwise is THIS guide safe to follow:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-rebrand-chinese-al00-mate9-to-t3554656
Could not even get past option 4. ''Do oeminfo backup in twrp, you should have a folder name twrp, inside this folder there is many subfolders.
In last folder there is 2-3 files, those files should be replaced with c636 oeminfo: http://www.mediafire.com/?szws87sk7rrkqr6''

The guide in OP is outdated, and it only has the oreo beta builds.
Do you know what your current firmware build is?
MHA-LxxCxxx

Official Oreo builds begin at B360, if you happen to be at C432 the latest is B364 (Ok, it's B365 but it seems to be a test build and was released before B364 so January patches.)
Click the 'update' link in the FullOTA-MF row, download update.zip.
Click on the 'file list' link in the FullOTA-MF row, copy link of update_data_full_public.zip and paste into a new browser tab, this downloads the zip.
Do the same with L29 or L09 hw data, depending on your version.
Next rename update_data_full_public.zip to update_data_public.zip, rename the L29/L09 hw data zip to update_all_hw.zip.
Place update.zip, update_all_hw.zip and update_data_public.zip in the HWOTA folder on your sdcard.
Download this zip: https://mega.nz/#!RaAQDLqY!pgBcA5tcy4ewvROUxei3af59hns4YtkeFPC5_WCyV6g (Note, this is only for Nougat to Nougat or Nougat to Oreo, does not work in Oreo as partitions changed and it flashes the NoCheck recovery to the correct partitions in Nougat. It will not flash correctly in Oreo)
extract and put hwota7_update.zip, MHA_RECOVERY2_NoCheck.img and MHA_RECOVERY_NoCheck.img in the HWOTA folder on your micro sd.
Put back mSD in phone and boot to TWRP, flash hwota7_update.zip and wait.
Phone should now reboot and start updating.
This is basically the HWOTA8 zip for updating Oreo or downgrading to Nougat, all props to @mankindtw.
All I did was change the partitions to flash so they match Nougat's partitions.

Good thing I never went ahead with that!
I'm on international MHA-L29C185B182.
Thank goodness I was able to restore Nougat as I backed up with TWRP recovery.
However, what is the easiest way to upgrade to the latest Android Oreo 8? At the moment I'm on stock 7 Nougat but am rooted with TWRP recovery.

Check my post, I edited while you posted this.
Or you can use this one, it's basically the same anyway, only difference is that you use a .bat file: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-mate-9-flash-update-package-t3593108
Use the same steps as I wrote above for downloading the update files as this was not the way to do it when that guide was written.
^ It seems the model I have is not found? After several attempts it is not finding my model.

There is a B371 too, but it was released before b370 so probably a test build.
That guide in OP seems to be a mixup. It uses the HWOTA8 files, which are for Oreo, so that's probably why it gave you errors.

Thank you so much ante0 for all the information, it was very helpful. I am now downloading the above three files. Once complete I will rename them as mentioned and flash hwota7_update.zip in TWRP recovery. Will let you know shortly the outcome!
Cheers ante0, finally got my phone fully updated to Android 8 Oreo following your guide. Thank you so much! If it was not for you this would not have been possible!
The other links I was looking at were outdated as you mentioned and the instructions you provided were better. I appreciate your time to help me.

Great. I would suggest Magisk but that's up to you to decide
Bootloader getting locked is normal when updating Nougat to Nougat and Nougat to Oreo. Oreo to Oreo is stays unlocked.

I did not see any guide for Magisk, guess I missed it.
Anyway there are pros and cons for both, though I also prefer Magisk. Either way they both do the job, root access.
All is good now. I am very happy with the phone. Still not even been 24 hours since I received it yet already the bootloader has been unlocked, TWRP recovery and root. Nice :good:
Great and very helpful thread. thanks for everyone who's contributed to it. I'm trying to do the exact same thing coming from ROM Aur. Do you think I can use the same exact process is yours coming from a custom ROM? Did you have to do the boot loader unlock in order to Root? If there are no custom roms then perhaps the boot loader unlock is unnecessary? In order to install Magisk to root, what are the prerequisits? Do I need to reinstall TWRP? If so , is there a link to the correct version? Are there any other pointers that you can give me that you found out while doing this whole process? Thank you so much

Thanks for the guide!! Very helpful. However, Before I can even start following it, I'm running into some issues. The challenge that I'm facing is that I'm currently on a custom ROM (ROM AUR) and I do not know what my firmware build is. The box only tells me what the model number is and it's the MHA-L29. how would I find my firmware build ? The phone was purchased at bestbuy in the US.
Thanks again

You can do the exact same process, however, I strongly suggest you follow the above guide from ante0. His guides are clear and upto date. Other guides were unclear and old not being upto date.
And yes, you must have an unlocked bootloader to flash a rom, however it is very easy to do. There are many guides which tell you how to do so. Simple fastboot commands when your phone is set to fastboot mode. You only need the unlock code via Huawei's website.
With regards to Magisk/SuperSU, yes, you must have a working recovery in order to flash either one. Without recovery you cannot get root access. I suggest you flash SuperSU as it is far easier than Magisk, a simple two step procedure!
What Android version are you on? Nougat or Oreo? Beware that when flashing recovery and root, it must be for the correct Android version. And of course if updating to Oreo, once again you will need to flash recovery and root made to run on Oreo to prevent issues and boot loops.
Do you not have the box that came with your device? I am guessing you have the international MHA-L29 version as I do, but you must be sure.

The bootloader (i.e. fastboot) is always locked (btw, is there an easy way to unlock FB Lock ?), you probably mean the 'USER Lock'. And the 'USER UnLock' is damaged only if you flash some random oeminfo files (which is a very dumb decision anyway).
This mechanism is documented in the USENIX paper i have linked in the OEMINFO thread.

It may be "easier", but Mate 9 is probably one of the most unbrickable smartphones that i know, because it can be recovered even if you manage to destroy 'partition table+xloader+fastboot' (the really critical parts, other partitions can be recovered without opening the phone case).

Yes I intend to follow the awesome guide from ante0 (thanks for that ante). I'm on Nougat currently. After following the above method, I guess I will have a fully factory locked phone? SO, I will have to first install recovery, then root. Correct? I do have the box but it only says the model number MHA-L29. Nothing on firmware but since its a US phone bought here, I'm fairly confident that its a MHA-L29C567B183. Although when i installed ROM AUR I used the version for L29C432 and it worked. Which one would you try if you were me? Will I brick the phone if the version is incorrect? If that happens, how do i return to oreo stock from there? Do you have any links for the right Recovery and root?
Thanks and sorry for so many questions.
UPDATE-- So have an update. I was able to install oreo using the method listed above. everything seems to be working fine. however I'm getting an error 255 message while creating a backup I'm using TWRP. Thinking that my data partition needed decrypting, I deleted it and rebooted the phone. Set it up and then went back into TWRP. I'm still getting the same backup error. any ideas? The route also installed and works fine . My concern now is that I would end up with I found that cannot be backed up with TWRP. BTW. I installed TWRP 3.2.1-0 from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-1-0-oreo-t3734967.
Thanks
^ 1 Thing hopefully you did not forget, before flashing the rom, you must ''wipe data'' from TWRP recovery otherwise you will get bootloop and the encryption issue. Did you wipe data from recovery prior to flashing? Encryption is removed/disabled when wiping data in recovery.
Glad you got somewhere at least. If it wasn't for the guide from Ante0, I'd still be bootlooping on Nougat.

Upgrade form B394 to B402/403

Hello guys,
long story short, I had the notification that a new update was released for my honor 8 FRD-L09C432 (B403, I was on B402), so, since I was rooted and with TWRP installed, I decided to unroot and install the original eRecovery.
Something went wrong and the system was damaged, so I flashed the B360 version first and after the B394. Now the phone is working really good but I can't install the new versions (B402 or 403). I tried:
flash the update from TWRP, not working
search the update from the dedicated option in the settings, no update found
tried to have it from the original eRecovery, error to find the info from the server.
tried also to update from the version B394 before unlock the bootloader, but it failed.
Am I missing something?
Use the get update through DNS thing in FF. It worked for me at least. Make sure the firmware is approved.

Hi Days Tech, could you please explain better what do you mean? Is there a link of some tut that I can follow?
Thanks!
Ok now I have the point, thanks for this tip!:good:
Flash TWRP.
use data.zip file and flash it via TWRP. (only download from FullOTA-MF PV file)
reboot and you are done. you will have updater in settings.
now you can flash the update.zip file via dload.

How to downgrade firmware?

I have a new SHT-AL09 with 172 firmware and a locked bootloader.
This firmware prohibits DC-Unlocker from reading the bootloader unlock code.
How do I downgrade to a previous firmware?
Try HuRUpdater: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m5/how-to/unbrick-mediapad-m5-install-otas-t3856312
You should be able to install TWRP even with locked bootloader. Download the full OTA and follow the HuRUpdater instructions.
Has anyone tried it yet?
Don't want to be the first, since I do not feel too comfortable and I am awqy for a few days

I think there is very little risk. Even when the downgrade fails, you should be able to just flash 172 again with HuRUpdater to restore back the original state. Don’t try to rollback too far, install the last version prior to 172 and try dc unlocker again.
I asked on a german Forum and got the response that TWRP cannot be installed with locked BL - which I find somewhat logical - however, I am reaching for the unlikely event that I can get an open Bootloader somehow....
I am a little confused by the instructions. I have to put the TWRP.img in the folder on the SD Card together with the HuRUpdater.zip file and the firmware zip files. But then what? How do I flash anything?

I cannot flash TWRP with my locked bootloader. I get an error FAILED (remote: Command not allowed) when I try this when the M5 is in fastboot mode: fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp.img

I don't have this so is there another way to downgrade the firmware?
OK, bummer. You can try the dload method, not sure if that works for downgrades though: dload

Firmware Finder apparently does not work with EMUI8 anymore.
And there is no rollback package available for the M5.
I have always found a solution for these kind of problems on XDA (and I have had a bricked device or two) but for the moment I am at a loss.
Guess I will have to learn to live without root and with the stock Huawei firmware...

Sorry mate, tough luck. ? I think the hardware of the device is pretty nice, but the stock firmware is so full of crap and spyware, totally unacceptable.
when downgrading using dload, check for xloader version first.

From my latest findings:
Bootloader need to be unlocked for DOWNGRADE to sucess in firmware mode with a working dload service repair firmware.
With locked bootloader you'll only be able to DOWNGRADE in eRecovery mode with the latest firmware approved (It will be a downgrade only if said version is the latest approved fetched in eRecovery and inferior to yours current)
I did not find yet how the latest firmware shown/available in eRecovery is fetched into eRecovery. I think it happens in normal mode sometimes when you're connected online. You'll then have to reboot later to eRecovery to be shown...
Now, for your SHT-AL09 B172 with august 2018 secutity patches, the only way to downgrade is to get your unlock code and vice&versa.
Luckyly, third-party sellers are just starting to provide working bootloader's unlock code online for around 30~50€.
New devices are supported.
You just pay, gave them Model ID, IMEI1, Serial, Product ID and you'll get your code within the next hours.
You just pay, gave them Model ID, IMEI1, Serial, Product ID and you'll got it within the next hours. I already tested it on few devices.
FunkyHuawei does it for 130€ per device with other services included.

I am also interested in rooting M5. Where you able to downgrade the tablet from B172 to B161?
No
I am also looking for a way to downgrade my Mediapad M5.
I have Hauwei MediaPad M5 CMR-AL09 (C432) currently running 8.0.0.192. dc-unlocker does not work with this version so I can not unlock bootloader.
This is what I have done:
* Format external sdcard into exfat. I used my Ubuntu Linux computer for this, sudo mkfs.exfat /dev/sdx1.
* Put the empty sdcard into the tablet.
* Download android app "Firmware Finder for Huawei" and I choose CMR-AL09C432B161 (8.0.0.161) FullOTA-MF. Downloaded that into update.zip file.
* I use android app FX File Explorer to get read/write access to the mediacard and to create the dload folder.
* I used android app FX File Explorer to extract only UPDATE.APP file into mediacard and the dload folder. The file is around 4.2GB in size when extracted. I also tried to put all files into dload folder but with the same result below.
* Open dialer and type in *#*#2846579#*#*. Go to software upgrade and choose SDCard upgrade. The tablet will now restart and do the downgrade.
* Problem now is that it goes into 5% and then fails.
Am guessing there is some protection to downgrade into 8.0.0.161 version.
Guys.. Let's solve this. :crying:

:crying:

Hmhm. I downgraded my Mediapad M5 Pro from 8.0.0.172 to 8.0.0.161
This is what I did:
https://www.android-hilfe.de/forum/...uer-huawei-mediapad-m5-ab-08-2018.892304.html
(short paraphrase of my downgrade-"guide" at android-hilfe.de)
1) check xloader-version
2) Download the potential downgrade from androidfilehost.ru (this worked for me, again, M5 PRO (CMR-AL19), Europe! https://androidhost.ru/byu )
2.1) The structure inside is firmware-name>software>dload
2.2) copy dload onto your SD (root directory)
3)The downgrade-process
3.1) power off the device
3.2) Volume up AND down AND Power Button for some seconds
3.3) Downgrade should start! If folder is not recognized, a Pink screen will appear - just do it from the start.
After rebooting, you should then have the version you wanted to downgrade to.
I have done this several times ( accidently updated once or twice )and it worked without any trouble.
The 5% thing: it stayed at 5% for quite some time. But it always went on after some time, at least for me
I read somewhere, sometime ago that with Firmware Finder the security check that is somewhere included in the file is not removed and therefore you cannot use those files. It seems imperative to me that one uses androidhost.ru (no guarantee that this information is right - so feel free to correct me )
ah, sorry only now I realized that you specified CMR-AL09, we had someone do it for SHT-AL-09, sorry :-/
but why don't you try the files from androidhost.ru (download the correct firmware! I linked the one for the M5 Pro! )
Thanks kev1807 for the input.
I tried the firmware you linked to for Huawei MediaPad M5 CMR-AL09 (C432) version 8.0.0.161. It did not work.
I found the version 8.0.0.190 on androidfilehost.ru and that worked. So I have now downgraded from 8.0.0.192 to 8.0.0.190 but that will not help me much. Downgrading into 8.0.0.161 still does not work.
I was on 8.0.0.192 and manage to use the file
"Huawei MadiaPad M5 CMR-AL19 hw eu Cameron-AL09A 8.0.0.190(C432) Firmware 8.0.0 r1 EMUI8.0 05014XYB [androidhost.ru]"
I have tried these packages but they have not worked.
