Reflash stock ob3 boot.img then take the update. Once on 8.1 extract the new boot image and use it to root! Don't be lazy, you can do it!!! ALL NIGHT LOOONG!! LOL JK
Wow...a big file! 500MB
How do I extract a boot image? Or have already extracted one? Jumped the gun with TWRP without decrypting, now I can't boot.
Hmm, yeah, I'm installing 8.1 right now, but am not sure how to get boot.img to reinstall Magisk.

Things I've noticed:
Picture color mode in Dev Options still won't stick (sRGB)
Still can't change the bluetooth settings in Dev Settings - nothing after Bluetooth Audio AVRCP sticks
They changed the aptX Audio Codecs to read Qualcomm aptX audio & Qualcomm aptX HD Audio - they still won't stick
Sample Rate - still won't stick
Bits Per Sample - still won't stick
LDAC Codec: Playback Quality - won't stick
Finishing up a full charge so I can gauge battery life. Was getting great battery with 8.0 beta 3 so we'll see how we do here.

Did you factory reset after the OTA? I just did, I'll see if those settings work any better for me once it finishes installing my apps.

I did not, and please tell me if you see a change. I hope so! I'd be happy to do a reset if that helps.

Then I'll probably hold off on doing a total factory reset unless I notice anything major going wrong. Thanks for testing.

I believe it is. The whole phone feels a bit more snappy and responsive. Imprint scanner unlocks it almost instantly, the notification shade pulls down instantly. I went to a few webpages I knew were really long and the scrolling was better. Not perfect, but better. I would say it handled the same way my Nexus 5X and Pixel did on that page.

Someone post a video of scrolling with the new oreo 8.1 next to another 835 device on the same web page so we can see the fix or lack of fix on this. I still don't get why they can't get it when LOS can make it perfect on 7.1 and 8.1. It's just bizarre.

I have to agree. Definitely a difference in over all smoothness. Like you said, notification pulldown is almost instant.
Any way to hide the navigation keys in 8.1 beta to get some more screen real estate? The app "Navigation Bar Editor" app worked for me in 8.0 v3 beta. Tried it on 8.1 beta with no luck.
Here is the Oreo 8.1 beta boot.img file needed to flash Magisk, etc. I can confirm that it works, I have Magisk flashed. One word of warning, you have to have NO SCREEN LOCK whatsoever to use twrp when you're on 8.1. So disable it prior to installing Magisk. You can re-enable it afterwards.

WARNING: This is not a polished build, Team Vanir supports the N7 and so I figured why not the Tilapia, but no one on the team has one.
I am looking for a person or 2 who does not mind testing an untested build or 2 for me.
1) Test build - I know I need to add more telephony based apps
2) If there is an error booting/once booted, may be a theming issue and future builds will probably be stock theme anyways
3) Get it here http://www.emccann.net/dho/3-Vanir-mirror/4-nighties/02-18-2013/
If it works I will edit this thread to be more formal. But Vanir is fully loaded and FAST.
Bug report - enabling 16-bit transparency (with Franco kernel) makes the tablet un-unlockable.
Other than that - it runs nice and steady

Hi, thanks for sharing your rom.
Feedback :
1. APN needs to manually set
2. Bluetooth cannot turn on. After installing the fix through cmwr, it is resolved.
3. I'm amazed with the tonnes of customization hidden under settings - display.
4. It's very smooth during multitasking and loads fast in a default browser.
5. Have just finished restoring all my apps, last bit is to configure all my email accounts.
Great job!
Question :
Is there a setting to bring down the notifications and status bar to the bottom?

Thanks you for your help and great feedback:
1. APN needs to manually set
- Thanks, I will likely need to explore some more props
2. Bluetooth cannot turn on. After installing the fix through cmwr, it is resolved.
- Got a link to the fix? I will try to write it in.
Great job!
Question: Is there a setting to bring down the notifications and status bar to the bottom?
- What DPI you running? try lowering it to force tablet mode. This is likely something I need to work on. Option is under display/general
Bluetooth I incorporated the temp fix. It will be in the nightly I upload shortly (the current one for today does not have it)
The APN, it seems google took out auto-APN support a few months back. I am not clear as to why. If you point me in the direction of a ROM with working auto-APN, I will merge the differences.
Keep giving me feedback and I will get everything sorted out

2. I'm using DPI 213. I had tried editing with Rom Toolbox Lite to 160, rebooted into tablet mode, but the text were very small. Unfortunately, the notification bar and status bar are still at the top. The SR12 rom with corefireX is able to do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2101650, but it only allows a maximum of 5 navigation buttons, whereas in your case, I could have up to 7.:good:
3. Do you have other versions of Vanir bootanimations?

Fantastic! Hopping over to download.
Update :
Looks like nothing has changed.
1. Bluetooth still can't turn on
2. Tablet mode at 160 and Nexus 7 mode at 213, status bar and notifications bar still stays at the top.
3. Under settings, display, navigation bar, advanced settings, after the "Navigation bar width" section where there is some explanation of combined width help, there's a whole lot of missing settings:
a. Combined bar width port
b. Combined bar width land
After Nav button transparency, missing settings:
a. NAVBAR HIDE OPTIONS
e. Hidden Navbar Enable
4. APN still needs to be done manually, ie it's not automatically done. I didn't try to do it manually though, but I believe if done manually, it will work since the first nightly I tried works.

3. I will look into these overlays, they are missing on all tab builds it turns out. Some I think are intentionally disabled

I dont want to customize the nav bar. I want to remove it. I've been searching since I got stock Oreo installed and I can't find anything. Does anyone have any insight on if this is possible? And how to do it if it is?
I'm not really a noob when it comes to screwing around to get the results I want. So if there is any way to make it work, I would love to know it.
I am rooted and on stock Oreo.

I have this in a note file in a folder with ADB. I do not remember where I got it but I use it on my pixel. If anyone knows who I can give the proper credit to that would be great.

Well it's a better option than anything I've found. Thanks!
I'll hopefully just have to wait for custom Oreo roms to get no nav bar at all. I use pie controls so I never need the nav bar.
I really appreciate the option that you have given me for the time being though.
So am I the only one who has a huge delay (3-4 seconds) when using the FPS to unlock after this mod?

Ouch! I have saved doing a reset by booting back into bootloader right away, booting into TWRP, and then flashing one of my bases. Doesn't work every time though. I've reset my phone a boatload of times getting this to work on OREO. Plus SystemUI.apk has a bad nine patch PNG you have to remember to fix first before you recompile it.
I've uploaded a new version that I hope will work.

Wow, was it really because of the immersive tweak? I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Editing build.prop to completely disable the navigation bar stops Oreo from booting at all. I went back to Pure Nexus 7.1.2 because of this. For me the phone actually unlocks, but leaves the display blacked out. An alarm went off, but I couldn't see anything to silence it. I scanned my finger and felt the haptic vibration and heard the unlock sound, but still saw nothing. Kept trying to unlock for 15-20 seconds, alarm blaring the whole time. Finally I decided to Power+VolDn reset. I heard a screenshot sound effect as I held the buttons down.
Once the phone restarted the display worked fine. I checked my camera roll and there was a 100% black screenshot as my most recent.
Until there's a reliable way to hide the navigation bar, I guess I'm out.

I assume now that it is official, that SafetyNet is passing ok so things such as GooglePay aren't a problem? I had avoided trying a beta because of the lack of SafetyNet failures on them from what I had read, and I tend to use GooglePay and a few games that need SafetyNet.

Can't really answer that definitively, it came out a few hours ago. I don't consider using Beta releases as proof, and the thing about battery life, is that it is so dependent on what you do with your phone, that each one of us will get different results.
I'm surprised that the update is only 16 MB if you're on the final beta, but I think I remember the update from Android 8 beta to 9 being similarly tiny. That's a pretty good indicator that barely anything changed from beta 6.

Just flashed the fastboot image, for some reason the only options under Choose screen lock are "none" and "Swipe". There's no option for PIN or pattern anymore which leaves me unable to add a fingerprint to unlock with either

See the August Q Beta thread, he fixed by going back to Pie then OTA
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/how-to/august-q-beta-t3955477/post80048214
cant change calendar sound, media storage crashed when try changing calendar notification sound
WIFI and Bluetooth broken after update
WIFI and bluetooth will not stay on. Factory reset doesn't help. Neither does going back to Android 9 and doing another OTA to 10. Staying on 9 until further notice!

Seems to be working great.
BTW, is there any way to swap the recent and back button?
adb shell
settings put secure sysui_nav_bar "space,recent;home;back,space"
This doesn't work any more :\

Same for me
(can change sound in aCalendar+ app)
Updated OTA last night. So far so good, not noticed any specific issues yet.
Kudos to essential for keeping so on top of these updates. If they do ever release another one I will buy one so long as they strengthen the phone/data signal a bit. That is pretty much my only disappointment with this one, but still it was worth every cent of the 200 bucks or so I paid for it.
Flashed ota through twrp and rooted using Magisk's canary build.
No issues thus far. I can change the stock calendar notification without media crash, but I'm only using the stock sounds. Are those experiencing issues using custom sounds?
Still can`t use gesture navigation with 3rd party launcher?

Just received the Mi 10 Pro. Anyone advise on the quick settings toggle when swipe down? There are only 12 options unlike previous phones and no way to change their order as far as I can find... the settings wheel in the top corner takes you to phone settings. Thanks in advance guys.

At the end of the all the toggles themselves is one called Edit
Thanks alas but there is no edit icon... all there is as per the pic attached.... googled it extensively but some no definitive answer as yet....

Strange...Here is mine. I swipe right on the first page of toggles and there is Edit at the end. Global version.
Yup, global version here too. MIUI global 11.0.2 stable 11.0.2.0(QJAMIXM). Yours the same MIUI version?

Yes, exact same. This makes no sense to me. It looks like you only have one page of toggles?
Makes no sense to me either, limited options and can't arrange most used to the top... maybe someone will be able to shine a light on it

Hi.
I have MIU version 11.0.10 on the global model And he doesn't show up either. With how useful it is.
This is a known issue, when restoring from a backup. Just reset the quick toggles: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/how-to-reset-restore-quick-setting-to-t3671583
This should fix it
Thx for that... no backup as first Xiaomi... and the link there to Google+ is no more...

Hola
1. This is a known bug but seemingly only affecting certain people.
2. The easiest way to fix this without the tedious resetting of your phone approach is to download System UI Tuner and reset the Quick Settings to the default configuration. You'll find the Edit button thereafter.
3. I had this issue on my Mi 10 - Global version running on the latest v11 of Xiaomi.EU custom ROM.
Hope this helps.
The link is not needed... Run the adb command... You might have to enable USB debugging and USB debugging (secure settings)
Hi.
Using this method with the app System UI will not affect when an update arrives?
Thanks a million that has sorted it out.... kept coming up with ADB server version doesn't match client but somehow figured it out adding just the line of code, restarted phone and the 2 page quick toggle menu is there along with the ability to edit it.

I was trying to enable it as per this article: https://9to5google.com/2020/01/14/google-pixel-screen-recorder-enable/ , that option shows up on the screen momentarily but the UI crashes soon after.
"Finally, you’ll need to enter a single command to get the built-in screen recorder working. After you’ve entered the(adb shell settings put global settings_screenrecord_long_press true) command, the feature will be live on your device." - Nope, it doesn't work for me.
Yeah, it didn't work for me either. I had just done it on my 2XL too, but no luck on the 4a.

Let's hope they would bring it back to 4a by ota updates, I have a good use for that while flying my drone.
I was able to revert/remove that option from screenshot button by:
"adb shell settings put global settings_screenrecord_long_press false" command.

good to know - thanks!
Stork works better, in my opinion. Have you already tried this app?
FWIW, there is a screen recorder in Android 12 (quick settings toggle button). I didn't do anything to make it appear.
