We all know that the U11+ is dimmer than U11 and S8, but what about previous HTC flagships like the M9 or HTC 10? How does it compare to them under sunlight?
According to GSM arena:
model Sunlight contrast white (cd/m2)
U11+ 2253 287
10 2378 428
M9 2334 534
M8 2371 577
Seems like displays are geting dimmer every year...

I will state once again that screen reflectivity is quite possibly ruining amateur lux readings.
I say amateur because AnandTech or displayMate haven't tested the U11+ (or M10, or M9).
I can say with absolute certainty the M9 was slightly dimmer than both the M7 and M8 with worse viewing angles. I always felt my M7 display was better, and I held the 2 side by side many times.
I no longer have my M9, it died.
The U11+ has a better screen than the M7 or M8, and is brighter outdoors. It has way more accurate colours, deeper blacks, and viewing angles are the better than the M8, same as the M7 but with no "colour shift" at all.
I have 2 M7s, one has a screen that "pops" slightly more, but the camera is affected by the red tint. My "primary" M7 that I bought launch day has more accurate colours and a truly insane white point (as in excellent) that defies logic.
I consider my U11+ to be better than both. It is also brighter than the essential, a phone not one reviewer or user complained about, and on par with the Note 4.

I had the 10 before u11 plus... Before I sold my 10 I checked exactly that thing... Everywhere they say u11 plus is great except the display brightness... Well, compared side by side with same settings the u11 plus is really darker and first I thought especially in sunlight I could ran into problems. Today it was a great sunny day... With 30 % setting and Auto brightness on I had an absolut brilliant display which was far better viewable than the 10 was in sunlight! So my concerns are gone.
I can absolutely confirm that. I was also out in direct sunlight today, and the U11 Plus was clearly readable and usable in every position and insolation.
I've had smartphones, they may have been brighter on the display, but somehow they were less usable when the sun was in the game. I'm thrilled about it. For me better than ok; -)

Yes, thats exactly what I noticed... The 10 was absolutely weak on direct sunlight... Even with brightness turned to 100 percent. So maybe the light sensor is much better... Of course this will lead to a higher drain of battery, but hey... This device is meant to be used as a smartphone not for luminate a stadium! So I don't understand, why the critics say, the darker display could be a NOgo for some...

Yes, it is once again like all the last years: the TOP flagship, not only rated, but also in the result of daily use, is made much worse in details during tests than it really is.
For me, the U11 and the U11 Plus are again completely undervalued. Leaving aside the fact that HTC repeatedly makes serious marketing mistakes, e. g. with the times when they come around the corner with new devices, or that they really do not advertise their devices adequately in comparison, I think that most tests are simply unfair or dishonest. But as they say: Whose bread I eat, whose song I sing.
I find the descent of HTC sad and completely undeserved. They build really outstanding smartphones, are innovative and mostly the devices are of better quality than those of the competition, but they don't manage to get out of the basement. Too bad!

+1 in everything you said. It's really said to see how a once OnTheTopCompany now is sitting somewhere in nowhere. Well, I even can't understand why they not released the 11plus in the US... The most reviews I've watched from US reviewers bought their device in Asia... Why they don't release this flagship there... Strange marketing. I remember the Desire times when 9 out of 10 people knew HTC... Now only 1 out of 10 is left... Or less! Nokia is better known these days then HTC.

I bet a deal with Google is responsible for that. Google threw the pixels onto the market at almost the same time, there must have been an announcement that HTC should not bring its U11 Plus there, if it does not want to endanger this billion dollar deal with Google.....
Well, what possibilities did HTC have...
Well I don't get it. The screen might be dimmer but it's quite good readable in direct sunlight. At some angles even better than the U11. I don't get the criticism.

My only conclusion about all this is that part of the deal between Google and HTC was to forbid the sell of the U11+ in the US, so the Pixel 2 XL wouldn't have any kind of direct rival. In exchange for this, Google would let HTC to sell as own the product they created for being the Pixel 2 XL instead of throwing it to the garbage.
Besides this, I think Google somehow is putting pressure in the media, because the vast majority of US reviews I have seen regarding the U11+ are b1tch1ng about the screen, the battery or even stupid things like "slow fingerprint sensor" or "no portrait mode". On the other hand, most of the European reviews I have seen are just speaking highly of the overall quality of the product and people seem really happy both in Europe and Asia with the device.
Getting back to the screen, I returned my Pixel 2 XL for the screen and hardware issues, but before that I compared the screen of both, and I can say that full brightness in the U11+ was around 85% in the Pixel. I use the phone with 50% adaptive brightness all the time, even in direct sunlight and no problems so far, and I haven't seen anyone b1tch1ng yet for the brightness in the Pixel 2 XL.
Yes, is not crazy bright like Samsung displays, but honestly I can't think of any normal consumer using their phones at full brightness the whole time; most people use their phones at 50% brightness or even less because we are most of the time indoors.

just wanted to share my experience i had today.
got a call from my local dealership that the One X had arrived, as i had shown huge interest in it.. as my previous phone got molested by my car..
went to take a look on the sexy thing. and the screen blew me away, but got a little disappointed when actually holding the phone, didn't get a "premium" feel that a 800$ phone should have. sure, it has a very practical poly carbonate shell casing etc..
but i had made up my mind anyway and was going to close the deal and walk away with the X, then the salesman opened up a drawer and put the One S in my hands.. it was not put up on display as they just arrived that hour.
well, what can i say?.. it really appealed to me, the thickness, the weight, the sturdiness, the cold matte surface.. it just felt so good that i bought it without even seeing it being turned on.. silly? i guess.. but we hit it off from the first second..
was worried about the screen as i just had a Razr, and was not so fond of the pentile screen, but this is something different.. better calibrated? who knows, it looks very nice..
i think last time i had this feeling for a phone out of the box was my first android, a htc hero.. and it have been about 8-10 android phones (even a ipone, brrrr.. that lasted 3 days i think) in between that.
hoping the community and developers will remember this phone also, when the smoke from the One X has settled.
well thats my two cents for today, good night from Norway...
What country has introuced HTC one X
or if USA which network has got it and how to get it
Nice. What would you say is better about the screen vs the Razr? Like is it less pixelated, the colors more accurate etc?

i would say that the colors are more accurate, and yes, not so pixelated as i noticed on the Razr. also not any "spots" when the screen is dark.

Awesome, thanks. Yeah it was my suspicion that Motorola did a poor job implementing the screen on their devices. I'm sure the screen will exhibit some of the shortcomings of the technology, but what I saw on the Moto phones was quite alarming.
You just made the wait for me even harder... I hope I get that same experience with the One S

Interesting...
I had just about made my mind up to go for a One S. I walked into an O2 shop in Germany today and they had a live One X display model, as well as dummy versions of both the One X and S. It was actually the One X that appealed more when I compared [the dummy versions] side-by-side due to the larger display size.
I guess I will have to wait until I can find a genuine One S on display to make my mind up...
Same happened to us my wife was all excited about the One X until she held it so she opted for the One S more user friendly

Recieved my One X on monday, and I'm already looking at this phone.
I guess I'll have to give it some time, but it feels too big and the battery really sucks.
Do you know anything about how the camera, battery and sound quality (from 3.5mm) is on the One S compared to the X?
Camera is the same, battery life will be better because of less cores and smaller screen, and sound quality I can't imagine is any different

Which firmware version do you have?
If you got the 1.26, then you should wait for the 1.27 ...
Battery life on the One X should be a lot better with this new version
Nevertheless, battery life on the One S will always be better (except for standby) due to the 28nm architecture and the lower resolution screen.

Engadget says that there is a difference in camera performance, altough hardware is exactly the same.
It seems that the One X performs a bit better as the software is more optimized.

Quintusdias; the wait is worth it..
Rousseauxy: couldnt tell, cause we had a cloudy day today. but as far as daylight it is no problem at all.. very bright and high contrast as Amoled is known for.
Ascot17; cant argue with you there, the One X screen is better.. but the feel of the phones compared next to each other left me no doubt.. the one X feels cheap compared to the S. and also the 4.3" screen is easier to handle grip-wise.. but specs on the X are awesome. but then again, the dual core Kraits are hardcore..
with the 28nm Krait cores battery life should be much better than the X. only had one charge on the phone so hard to say. but lasted to the day without any problem. been alot of fiddling to say the least!
Unclespoon; the camera is awesome. this is the best i have ever seen on a phone. even my wife's panasonic Lumix camera is struggling to keep up to this. HTC have been amazing at the camera front. if the camera is better on the X, i cant say since i didn't get to try it much. but i cant believe it is better since both phones runs the same hardware on the cameras..
Can't Wait
I just bought the One S today and it's charging right now so I've not used it yet. I read the reviews of the X and the S but went for the S due to the better battery life and the speed. The X may have more cores and a bigger screen but the S is meant to be faster and the screen is big enough for me
Just received mine, it's the most ****ing sexy phone I have ever seen. It's incredible. If I was hesitating between the One S, One X and the Galaxy Nexus, I don't regret for a second my choice.

Sweet, thx
I can completely share this experience. Went to look for both devices, honestly more eager for the X.. but having both of them directly in front of me I lost interest in the X completely and only focused on the S.. the difference in quality/haptic is huge.. sure, the display of the X is a blast.. but to cite my girlfriend who was standing right next to me in this situation (translated):
"are you totally nuts?! i know you for sure and i love you.. even for wanting to stay a little boy.. but that's not a mobile at all(One X)!! go and buy a freaking ipad or i don't know in addition but this is ridiculous...and it looks cheap compared to this stylish thing (One S)"
What should I say: she's absolutely right.

Have been into a phone shop today and had a play with both phones. Am going for the One S as well. It feels more comfortable in the hand. The One X looks really good but feels like a stretch for my thumb.
Just out of curiosity, talking small hands. Would any of you who have owned the device happen to have as small hands as I? I have gloves size 10 and 9(thight fit) and wonder if the S will be comfortable used one-handed. I've already ruled out the X on specs alone. No way my hands fit that 4.7" screen.
I've just pre ordered blue version from cpw UK for £649.00.
Samsung fans will call me crazy but I'm currently using S7 Edge blue coral colour and I'm still hating touchwiz. Love the phone though.
My reasons for buying HTC U ULTRA are many and there are few cons.
I'm a sucker for big screens I think minimum for me is 5.7".
QHD and love the second screen.
4gb ram is ok obviously would have loved 6gb.
I wonder if many are considering buying HTC U ULTRA?
I was quietly waiting for HTC to release the price but I've been left disappointed. I really can't see how the Ultra justifies a £649 price tag. Something closer to £500 would have been more reasonable IMO.
I don't think it's going to be a big seller, shame I think timing is awful. Should have realeased this around Dec, could have charged that much then.
I do agree it's bit expensive ideally should have been around 550.00 max.
I've just pre-ordered mine on contract, hope that this is as good as my (lost) HTC 10!

I actually quite like Super LCD so no concerns there for me.
I didn't pre-ordered my next 10th HTC yet, the U Ultra (Black) of course. Need to sell my HTC 10 before
5.7" is perfect for me. The phone I kept the longuest (2 years) was the One Max and its 5.9" screen. The HTC 10 is just perfect, but the small 5.2" screen.

The main reason I'm going to buy the U Ultra is its 5.7" screen.
Next I know I'll retrieve what I love about my 10: responsiveness, excellent sound and photo. Everything the U Ultra has over the 10 is bonus.
Does this answer your question ? I could go more detailed if needed
Edit:
I remember well when the One Max was announced, it was almost shot in flammes because it was "just" a supersized One M7: too big, same SD SoC,... Why hadn't HTC put, six months later, the next SD, and blah blah blah...
I had then the One M7 and most happy with it, but I couldn't resist the One Max 5.9" screen for movies and web surfing, and I switched for the better. I kept it for 2 years. I remember my colleagues from the beginning, wondering I was doing with such a big phone, in the end most of the time a bit jealous for the comfort it provided.
The One Max hadn't OIS when the One M7 had it, but no big deal for me.
I sold it a colleague, a woman (yes!), and the One Max is still alive and kicking
I hoped the 10 would be bigger, but I bought it nevertheless and enjoying it until I receive the U Ultra

In that case why don't you buy the LG G6? It has the same 5.7 screen (with Dolby Vision) and its a much much smaller dimensions (a whole 1 centimeter smaller in height).
It will also probably going to be $100 cheaper.
If you want a dual camera OIS added to the mix you can always get the Huawei P10 plus with the kirin 960 (which is more powerful then SD the 821), and has 6GB of ram.
Not to mention that the above have a 3.5 mm jack.
I cancelled my pre order in the US today.
I am very disappointing that HTC could not bring a winning device this year. Honestly I would not pay more then $550 for it while the pre order was for $810 (plus tax).
The ultra does not have the boom sound speakers anymore. If they only chose an AMOLED screen (as they did with the pixel), and added the 3.5 jack, I could ignore the size of the phone and the price could be justified.
I will wait for a device that can give me the whole package, and I think that some of the new ones could give me that (have you seen the new Sony? )

As you surely noticed in my sig, I'm an HTC addict, I won't go for another brand. I love the Sense UI from back to the Desire HD.
Speaking of sound, I don't listen to anything aloud very often, but I listen to a lot of music ans what a lot of movies and tv shows: the HTC 10 is perfect in this respect, and the U Ultra should be even better
Look at the HTC support page, the U Ultra does have boomsound speakers!
The SD 821 will more than enough for what I'll do with it, as I don't play games on my phones.
OIS on the back camera is enough for me. I have OIS on the front one of my 10, I'm not really a selphie addict.
If HTC really disappear some time ahead, I do hope that the very last HTC I own will last as long as possible.
One last thought, you don't really like/love HTC, do you ?

I had a few HTC devices (starting the nexus one), but in the past couple of years I was going for the One Plus devices and tried a few Samsung ones.
In my mind the HTC UX and system responsiveness was always the best. I did not see a phone as smooth and the Pixel is an absolute gem (made by HTC).
The reason I stopped buying HTC is the screen size.
As far as the sense UI. I don't have about that. I don't use widgets and have a bought version of the Nova Launcher.
I owned the LG V20 (and gave it to my wife since she absolutely loved the photo quality). The second screen is a gimik and I just turned it off. I think I would have done the same with the Ultra.
Samsung phones are *crap* wrapped in an AMOLED + Amazing camera shell and I swore not to buy it anymore.
The $400 phones are great but after owning the note 7, I can say that I want a good camera phone. You cannot find a good camera at the OP3T or the AXON 7 even though they try (axon has a samsung sensor and the OP has a sony sensor).
I am a very heavy earphone user. I have them on all the time and I always buy new ones (cause I lose them everywhere) so a phone without a 3.5 jack means I have to adjust heavily to the fact that I need to buy an adapter or start buying $50+ Bluetooth sets (and I really don't want to do that).
That brings me to the G6. It has a smaller body (by 0.9 centimeters- which is a lot). A better LCD screen, IP rating and the camera of V20 (which is amazing but worse then the Ultra's).
It has a 3.5 Jack and it will be cheaper then the Ultra.
Dont get me wrong, I hate LG! My wife had the LG g3 and LG g4 for the past two years (before the V20) and those phones worked like a charm till the last day (with no case since she hates them).
But I still hated them- the bloatware is horrible, the UX is stupid and they are just unexciting.
I might try the P10 plus with the leica lenses.

The test is not serious...
You confirm that the main screen is very bright (as always with HTC) !
I don't really care for the U Ultra back design, I'll put the clear case at once, the liquid color shouldn't be lessened too much and that'll be just fine.
Thanks for your impressions.
I may have to wait until April to buy it though
Mine is being delivered tomorrow from cpw, nice surprise. Was expecting it friday.
I got a notification from Vodafone for a sim switch today, hoping cpw will call for the pick up tomorrow

I'm living in Indonesia, got the phone from my supplier in Singapore(I have an online store). Selling it for around USD 675 at my store
I got it a exactly a week ago.
First impressions:
Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
Of course I got the blue sapphire one and it looks awesome, especially with lights reflecting off it. It gives shades and colour gradation like no other phones when bouncing off its curved back. Had people noticing my phone several times now.
This thing is smooth, very smooth
Love the LCD.
Have been a fan of LCD over amoled. It's sharp, colour saturation is good, images are lifelike. Also, sunlight readability have been great compared to htc 10.
Tried the v20 and the light bleed were awful from the second screen (inside a dark room, very low brightness) On the U Ultra it's far better.
Camera is AWESOME.
Had pixel XL for about two months before selling it. The price I had to get it on this part of the world was unreasonable (1075usd 128 xl). Had a hard time justifying that kind of money in my pocket. As I recall, this camera matches the pixel's easily and with manual control it is perfect. Will play more with the camera later.
Battery life is beyond expectations
I thought the battery would be very sucky considering 3000mah had to power qhd screen+2nd screen. Apparently it holds up pretty well. On all day Wifi it reaches almost 7 hours SOT. I'm testing mixed use today switching between WiFi and LTE (bad Lte connections here in Indonesia btw) as I go.
Speaker is similar to htc 10 if not better
Have not tried the USB C earphone I don't use earphones a lot. Which is why I don't really care the loss of 3.5mm headphone jack. I listen to music on my car via Bluetooth.
Size is perfect for me. I came from Huawei mate 9.
The included case scratch easily, I suspect the glass back scratch easier.
Too bad this phone doesn't create enough hype. Really have a hard time selling it on my store
A bit about me: I sell phones, and usually I tried every flagship I sold before I sell them. No brand fanboyism whatsoever.
Bottom line is this phone is really good, however I should've been released early December 2016 not today as all we've seen in the news are plethora of 2017 phones coming out with very slim bezels, new chipsets, dual cameras, waterproof, etc. I know that's not possible otherwise people would've had a hard time justifying buying pixel xl lol. Google would be outraged.
Any other stuff u guys would like to know?
I mean, I get it. They're both new phones, but other than RAM and processor, the two diverge quite quickly. The basic difference is Samsung put effort in display quality and quantity while HTC focused on sound quality. It's like comparing a tangerine and a tangelo. Same base, but two totally different things. And soon people will be drawing comparisons vs the Oneplus 5. Once again the op5 seems to have focused on camera. So grapefruit vs tangelo Just get one you like for display, audio, or camera and you're set, imo.
people are always comparing flagships to flagships. It's not just about comparing them as they have the same SoC and RAM. If everyone is just comparing like for like, then all comparison of Android vs iPhone would be silly
I think it's fair to compare them - many people are still used to the carrier 2 year cycle. For them (and myself, but for other reasons), now is the time to choose the phone they will be using for a significant amount of time. These are substantial investments, and people want to be sure they're getting "the best". Going for the "one you like for display, audio, or camera" is wise, but to some extent these can be adapted to if the competition seems likely to be more future proofed. For instance, Bluetooth 5 support on the S8 could potentially be a big deal down the road... but Unlocked phones tend to age better with ROMs.
I'm on the fence mainly because of how many Verizon features are missing right now and, with a current BestBuy sale the S8 can be had for basically the same (or less) cost...
The comparisons are more helpful than you might think. I think the biggest reason for most is to justify where to spend your money. Some might think that both phones are fast, so it doesn't matter what you get.
Completely wrong. It helps to give insight and different perspectives on the software, hardware, and just each person's personal preference. That's what it does for me, at least.
Now, would I say one is better than the other....no. That information is irrelevant.
I actually like the comparison. I like seeing everyone's caring opinion.
I'm still on the fence as to which to get. The S8 is a nice looking phone but the bad sound quality and poor developer support is turning me away. While the screen on the U11 does not compare.
The dilemma is that no phone does it all perfectly. I have both the S8 and U11. I love the S8's screen, but the U11 has better audio. The cameras are close, but the U11 has more detail under certain conditions. So I'm still searching for the perfect phone. If I want great pictures, I use my Galaxy S6. For audio, it's my Axon 7 or LG V10. But if I just want a good all around phone, I grab my U11 or S8. So sure, by all means compare phones. At the end of the day, you'll have to decide which features are most important to you.

Whatever I end up keeping, I'm hoping it will be replaced by the Google pixel 2
The S8 audio quality wasn't bad, but I really hate single bottom firing speakers. It just feels weird having one ear hear much louder than the other.

This is just an opinion. Do you have the U11? Have you seen the screen in person? It actually does compare.
Probably because they are the 2 top devices right now.
Cant put the G6 in the same category due to it running an obsolete SoC and the OP5 as much as it may have going for it lacks in many other areas so cant really put it beside the S8 or U11 either.
If the U11 had of went with smaller bezels (only to keep the overall size smaller) and a 6" screen I'd possibly sell my s8+ for one and thats saying alot as im a huge sammy fan.
The fact that HTC stayed with a flat screen is great, the sound is of course far better, cameras are close and both look amazing.
I just cant do the smallish 5.5" screen i dont think especially with the 6.2" on the S8+ even with the weird aspect ratio
Still its the best device HTC has built to date IMO and they are def on the right track for better sales I would think.

I would think so, too (especially since they sold put almost everywhere), but that depends on how bad their financial situation is. I think this will help them live to develop another flagship.

Today I received my U11 6+128GB ver and I owned Galaxy S6 and LG G3, they are all 2K panel. I agreed both my older phones got better screen over U11 though the screen isn't bad for normal use and hardly noticeable for most people but when I read some low quality pdf doc I clearly see the different is there.
All and all, I get the phone with 6+128 at this low price with a good cam. I understand the screen quality might be a bit lower if HTC still want to make profit.
I don't see an issue with comparison between the two. After all the s series is the most popular Android phone out there and is usually always the top competitor.
The phones are also the same generation in the specs department so not comparing them would make no sense.

Hi Nick
As you have both devices is it worth the upgrade from the U11 to the Plus? Apart from the almost edge to edge display which brings it in line with most of the current flagships, the rest are pretty similar and it'll be even closer one the U11 gets Oreo.
But I do like HTC and the pricing is competitive and it's a really nice phone.

Hi Wil,
I also look forward to Nick's comments, but i thought I'd jump in and give you my 2 cents, seeing as I also have both the U11 and U11+ now.
At the end of the day, value is a subjective thing, and, if you already own a U11, it is probably not going to be considered great value to upgrade to the U11+. That being said, I did it anyway. Here are my thoughts on the comparo.
Pros:
The U11+'s screen and speaker combination is a dream, especially if you watch a lot of videos. The colours on the SLCD are lovely and punchy, whilst being natural. The speakers are great, even shareable in moderately noisy environments
The U11+'s shape is much easier to handle than the U11, has the rounded back but straighter sides and a flatter front makes for a firmer hold.
Front camera is better. just is.
Oreo - Although U11 rollout is also starting, so many of the features are available soon.
Cons:
Oreo - there is a new notification for apps running in background. thats irking me.
Lack of accessories so far.
Its only my second full day, so jury is still out on batter performance, but it is better than U11. question is how much better.
Yeah l agree it's definitely better overall but how much better and would it be an upgrade upwards or just a sideways upgrade.

What do you think of the battery vs the U11 now it's been a bit longer? I've got the 2 XL and am loving the phone despite the issues others have had but the huge battery on this phone (and cheaper price) make this very tempting

Hey there,
So, for me, its not been an apples vs apples comparison, as my U11 was on LeeDroid, which had a lot of battery optimisations, plus enabled VoLTE on my network, which allowed the phone to stay on LTE rather than switch to 3G for calls, etc. So my U11 was "optimised" for a lack of a better expression.
Through long term monitoring on GSAM, my U11 would give 3.5 hours of SOT and 12.5 hours of standby on a full charge.
Using GSAM now, my + is lasting 4h45m SOT with 17h31m standby. So, significantly more, but I rekon there's more to gain when HTC updates the firmware with further optimisations or when Devs have good ROMS ready.
Good Thread and i am hoping to jump on HTC wagon again after touch pro and Mate HD (forgot the name) Been using Sammy after that note 2 and now S6. Question i have is it too big or hand feel ratio feels better. I know from S6 it would be feel big hopefully similar or smaller than S8+. Note 8 is too big and pricey for my liking.
Second and most importantly would be battery. I know its early days but i just want it to last me a day at least. I generally use for work and clash of clan games. Mostly indoors but at times i am travelling thats when i want it to hopefully last 1 full day. I would be interesting to know more about the battery tests.
TIA.

Cheers mate! I would say I'm a little disappointed but I'm guessing you leave everything on (Wifi, LTE, BT, etc) given that you only get 3.5hrs with the U11? Just reading around the subforum for that phone, it seems others can get pretty impressive battery life for a 3Ah battery.
When the phone is sleeping, can you double tap it to wake it without picking it up? That means without triggering the motion sensors. This worked wonderfully well when I had a pixel XL earlier this year and I would love to see it on the u11+ as I already pre-ordered it.

Yeah, depends on usage pattern, but mine on u11 is ~6hrs of SOT and ~1d 9h standby.
This is without games and such, but a 6-7 social media sync, 2 mail accounts sync.

That's really too bad, especially without the fingerprint scanner on the front. Hopefully a custom kernel will add it in the future, although I don't expect there will be a lot of development for this device.

Double tap to wake works on htc devices w/o motion sensing from htc 10 times. The other person is wrong. It worked on my U11 too whilst I had it. I'm sure it's present.
You don't need any custom rom. And you have nothing to worry about.

Your screenshot calls it a motion launch gesture and it tells you to pick up the phone first before you double tap to wake it. Doesn't leave much room for doubt does it? Hope you're right though ?

Like I said, I've used it. It works if the device is flat on any surface. Just need that option checked. I'd think the double tap is read as motion?
If you see other options in that setting, it's things like swipe down twice to launch camera. I'm pretty sure you don't need to lift the device to do that. So yeah.
First off i'm trying to decide on the Pixel 3 or S9 and I know asking here is kinda dumb but I wanna know if some of these issues are as big of a deal as the media plays them out to be? The issues i'm hearing about that bug me most are the speaker issues, will the low volume be fixed or is it a hardware thing? Also the back supposedly can be scratch quite easily, I went to best buy and tried to scratch it with my nail and it left a mark but it rubbed away. or is this more of a thing that coins will scratch it if put in a pocket with them? I had a Pixel 2 and the back never got scratched well I had it. Like I said I went to bestbuy and handled both the Pixel 3 and S9 and its a hard decision to choose. I like the make and build quality of the S9 but I hate it only comes in grey or purple here in Canada. It also has a beautiful screen. But the Pixel reminds me of my Pixel 2 plus it has the better camera. not that the s9 is bad just I don't like that it over exposes. Do you have a Pixel 3 do you recommend it and how's the battery life?
I've owned about 5 other phones before the Pixel 3. It's got the best speakers of any phone I've had. For me the volume is more than loud enough. I use a thin case so can't comment on the back being scratch prone. I haven't tried scratching it. Worst case you could get a skin for the back if you don't use a case and find it shows marks from your use. The screen is very good. If you're very picky about the display quality at low brightness you may not like it, but that's easy to test at a store before you buy it. The camera is excellent, so no worries there. For me the battery is as good or better than any other phone I've owned. After light use I have about 60% left at the end of the day. Of course, your past experience, expectations, preferences, needs and usage will determine whether it's a good phone for you. It what you've listed are your biggest concerns you'll likely be happy.
My general experience with the S9 was good apart from the battery life, the exynos processor version was shocking (i think this is the one you get in Canada too). Not sure if recent updates fixed this but it seemed like a huge complaint at the time, i couldn't get a day with moderate to heavy use.
With regards to the Pixel3 back texture, i have it naked and it's been rattling in my pockets (albeit i never put any phone in a pocket with coins or keys), it's perfectly fine and i would take this textured back over the slippy S9 any day. I have the Pixel2 also and it's a little scruffy on the back but unless you inspect it very closely it's perfectly fine.
Camera on the Pixel is way better in my opinion, you get a usable picture almost every time whereas the S9 i sometimes had to take several shots to get what i wanted.
I've had the Mate 20 Pro and iPhone XS this year also and the Pixel3 trumps all in my opinion.
I do have an outstanding issue open with Google however where the Pixel3's gyroscope sensor isn't calibrated correctly and so it's out by about 2-3 degrees. This means that when taking photos or using apps that use the gyroscope i have to hold the phone slightly off angle to make it think it's level. All that said i still consider it the best !
Is it worth upgrading from Pixel 2 (bought a new one for 350) to Pixel 3 (Pixel 3 would cost me 300€ extra)? I especially want to know, whether the super res zoom and the wide angle selfie camera is worth it - these are the two most outstanding differences between Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 in my opinion. If you know some other differences which are worth the additional 300€ please tell me.

Wide angle is nicer than I thought although I hate taking selfies ROFL. Super res was a meh compared to dual cam phones but better than nothing.
I'm in the process of upgrading to P3 from P2 (crappy displays, locked bootloaders, RMAs, etc.) and side by side P3 looks so much more modern and if you like modern then it looks so much nicer.
I would be careful with your decision though since this year P3 won the honor to enjoy all the display issues P2XL went through last year, so getting a satisfactory display should be your first priority in my opinion. That said, a good display on P3 seems to be better than the "good" display of P2XL last year, as suggested by others over at P3XL forum and I agree (I ordered both P2 and XL last year and had a brief experience with XL). Anyway, once you get a good display hold on to it!
Other than that, I can't think of buying anything else at this moment mainly because I value stock experience, easiness of modding, and Dev support. Ironically we have the locked bootloader issue right now on both P3 and XL. The dev support was also far behind compared to old Nexus days. If One Plus offered a smaller version of 6T I might have jumped the ship.
P.s. camera is nice as always but being a home guy I use the display 1000x more than the camera so a good camera only means "this" little to me.

Check out the thread in this Pixel 3 QA and Pixel 3 XL QA section. Newer devices *may* come in with bootloader "un-unlockable" :cyclops: Some people received this *feature* on their new devices and some enjoyed it on the new, RMA devices.
