Auto rotate issue - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I've been experiencing an issue with my Pixel 2 where the screen is occasionally, and seemingly without rhyme or reason, not rotating to landscape view. It basically gets stuck in portrait mode despite having "auto-rotate" enabled and the only way to resolve is to reboot. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a sensor I need to calibrate? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Same. Stock, rooted with Magisk, running Substratum.

Same but i dont have to reboot, just toggle it from quick settings. Also it sometimes takes several swipes to unlock the phone. Not most of the time, but sometimes. Mostly after the screen has been off for an extended period of time.

For me, it doesn't matter toggling it in quick settings, or even the settings app. It won't rotate unless a fullscreen video or game forces it. After exiting, the screen stays landscape until I toggle off rotation, it snaps back to portrait, then won't leave portrait again, regardless of how many times I toggle autorotation.

Same here. Rotation stops working randomly, and toggling the quick setting does nothing. Only rebooting helps. Phone is completely stock.

Ditto. Just started happening recently for me. Especially annoying when using Android Auto. A restart fixes things for a while, then it goes back to this. Mine is stock as well.

Pixel 2 auto rotate
Mine shuts off randomly and I have to switch it back on

Same problem here too. Yes a reboot does fix, don't know for how long though.

Anyone ever find a way to resolve this? Just started happening on my Pixel 2 XL. It's completely stock. Autorotation is enabled. Super annoying.

G2X Camera Won't Launch

For some reason, the Camera function on my G2X no longer works. It worked a few times previously, but now every time I launch the screen flickers and nothing launches.
Persists across reboot. Cleared data on the camera app, want to avoid wiping the phone if possible.
Anyone run into this, before, or know a fix?

Haven't run into this problem myself but you could try downloading an alternate camera app from the market to see if that works. If it does, you may have to factory reset your phone. If it doesn't, it may be the hardware(the camera itself).

I noticed this problem as well, after rooting the phone. I'm not sure if it was an issue before that or not. But what I found is that if you rotate the phone into landscape mode and then open the camera app it works fine. Only trying to open it in portrait caused me any issues. Hope this helps.

This is ridiculous.
Yet true.
I'll be resetting my phone tonight to fix the battery drain, hopefully this will be resolved at the same time. But this definitely worked, so I can test out this camera some more while I wait. Thanks!
I had this issue too. Try opening while in landscape. Once open switch to portrait then close while in portrait. You should be able to open on portrait after.
Edit: This only works some of the time
Has anyone figured out the camera issue? I had my camera working fine, I rooted the phone and now the camera just flickers around the button. Must have this camera working.
Thanks

Had same issue, as you noted the reset solved my problem, camera is working AOK. I would have hated to loose the camera function, it is a good camera.
2nd phone that my damn camera stopped working after about 15 minutes. I didn't root this phone to make sure that wasn't the issue. The camera worked after I did a factory wipe, got it all set up and was taking pictures while I was setting it up to make sure it wasn't a rogue app. Thought I was in the clear and tried to take a picture and nothing. Same problem everyone else is having. just wiped the phone again for the 3rd time and camera works, going thru same process, can anyone give me any advice on this camera. Very strange and getting real pissed off.

I use anylock to bypass my lock screen so when I get a text message (ssm popup) It will open up my screen automatic and display text message. This way I'm not always pushing my power button to gain entry to phone. Problem is the lock screen app is some how screwing up the camera app. Also tried no lock and same problem.
Just wanted to let anyone using lock screens what I encountered, maybe save you hours of resetting phone.

Mine was doing the same thing and I was about to blame it on Pauls patch. It turned out to be widget locker. I froze it in Titanium and then it came on with no problem. I was really close to wiping AGAIN. Really glad I saw this. Thank You

[Q] Galaxy S5 turns display on randomly

Was anyone experiencing the display randomly turning on & won't dim itself off. I am using the fingerprint lock so it stays on the screen asking for the alternate password. This happens while charging & when idle. The phone stays on until you press the power button. I am testing if is something to do with the fingerprint lock, switching to pattern lock. any ideas?
I also use fingerprint unlock and have noticed that the display will randomly turn on and ask for the alternative password. I just got the phone this past Sunday (6/8) and all I've really done to it is add the fingerprint security.

Stock ROM, no changes.
I've also seen this. Usually happens to me at night for some reason. Screen turns on and when I hit the side button to turn off the screen it goes out for a few seconds then lights up again. Have to reboot to fix it.
Mine does it during the day at work quite a bit, I think it is from the home button being pushed in my pocket. It really should be associated with the light/proximity sensor as to when the button will work.
Having the same problem with both swipe and fingerprint unlock. I can understand swipe, fingerprint works better in my pocket then with my finger
Mine is constantly turning on in my pocket now. I have an otterbox commuter on it and edges are raised pretty good, doesn't seem like my leg would hit the home button but it's hard to tell
Only happens to me when connectivity state changes, or music skips for a notification

I am having this problem on stock unrooted ND2 as well as RDDT. I also noticed on both that I get notification sounds with NO notifications showing up. So I have my notification sound going off a few times each hour for no reason unless I leave my phone on silent.
As far as the screen coming on randomly, I found that disabling air wake has helped a little bit. Especially overnight, I leave my phone next to my pillow (yea, I am a junkie...) and the screen would turn itself on every time I rolled over, and the screen would stay on after that until I woke up and turned it off. I know it was staying on because a couple of times I reached over the phone, screen turned on and I watched it for about 5 minutes (screen time out is set to 15 seconds) and it didn't shut off.
TL;DR Turn off air wake - Need help figuring out phantom notifications (still exist after multiple factory resets and almost no apps installed)
My issue stopped once I installed a glass screen saver. Home button is now countersunk with the 0.33 mm. Cover & review.

I installed the same one, lol. It still does it, not as often though
I was using standard pattern lock screen on stock rooted and had this issue. It was the wave to wakeup feature that was causing it. I turned it off and it went away. 3 days with no waking by itself.
I've never had that turned on.
looks like you guys turn on air wake and it's working sensetively. on the contrary, mine is numb

It was numb for me too when it wasn't being awakened by ghosts. The other guy said he didn't have that feature on so not sure what the other issue(s) is/are.

air wake is a nice feature to extend the lives of home & power button, except it always makes me look like an idiot when I am waving my palm over the phone again and again.
I tried to set the mode to unlock by fingerprint and keep air wake on for a whole day, but I didn't encounter that problem. maybe it just affects some devices, maybe it's not air wake.
Anybody found a real solution for this inconvenient?!
This only happens at Lollipop... 2 months ago I updated and because this annoying issue that was draining my battery I downgraded to Kit Kat...
Last weekend I decided to give another shot to Lollipop, but the issue remains...
I tried all settings relative to screen and lock screen and nothing worked!

I have the same problem. My battery has been life does not even last me until the end of work. Trying a fix now that I just thought of though. This problem is incredibly frustrating at night too.
I believe its the connection optimizer. Go to Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Connections optimizer:
Then Uncheck "Connections Optimizer"
Seems to be working so far! So hopefully this helps the rest of you!
This Fix did not work still perplexed by this problem.
After rooting and removing a lot of bloat, I got rid of it. I have no idea which app it is though. Maybe an xposed module logging screen wakes could be of assistance. But I too noticed it immediately after flashing a lollipop ROM.

[Q] Phone stops auto rotating

I've came upon a bug and wanted to see if anyone rise has encountered it. Randomly my phone will not rotate from portrait to landscape. Once chrome actually got stuck on landscape and wouldn't go to portrait. Disabling and enabling rotation seems to fix the issue temporarily. I can't seem to pinpoint what's causing it. Everything is stock still, the phone is rooted and I'm using the Google Now launcher.
Google Now Launcher doesn't let you rotate the screen into Landscape, you'll need Xposed + GEL Settings or Nova Launcher/Apex to allow it to put the phone into landscape mode while on the home screen.
Happened to me all the time in cm11 snapshot m9. Never happened o me otherwise.
I think it's a bug. It happened to me sometimes and it takes a while to rotate.

S6 won't rotate screen - suggestions?

Trying to avoid a reset but I'm all out of ideas.
-woke up today, screen wont rotate
-Using nova launcher, home screens are enabled to rotate but don't. Neither does messages or browser
-disabled nova launcher, messages/browser/everything else still doesnt rotate
-when i turn on the camera, the icons rotate when i flip it
-did a gyro self test with *#0*#, it passed
I don't know what to do, ideas?
*edit*
-x, y, and z axis all change [from what i can see] properly as i move phone in the *#0*# > sensor test
-downloaded a rolling ball game/app to see if it functioned, it works fine
I have no clue wahts going on. I saw people asking if "screen rotation is enabled" to other people on google, but I don't know of any screen rotation option short of whats in the nova launcher im using [which wouldn't effect webbrowser/etc]
I started a thread about this a few days ago. My will get "stuck" in landscape. It takes a few mins for it to go back. Not sure what is up.

Mines been stuck for about 3 hours now that I'm aware of (but I didn't use it for the last 9 hours). I also know I had a burst of like 30 messages come in from the same person all at once before noticing this issue, I thought their cell service just lagged and shot it all out when it came back online, but I'm starting to wonder if it was my phone doing something weird
Same issues randomly started for me last night as well. From everything I've read there's no definite answer yet. So frustrating.

Screen Rotation Bug? / EMUI 4.0 / NXT-L09C636B170 / Android 6.0

Just got a new Mate 8 this week, and after not having a smart phone to use since 2010, I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far with my limited exposure . . . even fine with the stock EMUI interface too.
One thing I noticed right away was the phone's inability to rotate a full 360°. Left and right horizontal rotation is fine, as well as the normal vertical, but try to go inverted, and the screen did not rotate at all for the home screen or for any app I tried. Funny, because I actually had a Chinese phone back in 2008 called an i9, which had the same rotation issue for only the inverted position.
I tried turning auto rotation On and Off, rebooting, etc., but no help. I did not try any hard reset on the phone, but I did go to Google Play and installed a rotation app called Set Orientation. When running, using the app's Automatic (full) rotation setting, the phone now rotates properly to the inverted position on the home screen as well as the few apps I tried so far. This made me happy that the hardware doesn't seem to be the issue with it not rotating inverted.
I did a forum search for rotation issues, and did not see any threads for this specific issue.
So has anyone else had this partial rotation issue and maybe an easy fix for it?
Also, I was wondering if there might be any downsides to having to always rely on an app like this, as maybe it won't always be compatible with other apps which may need to have the screen rotate to the inverted position?
Thanks,
~ Craig ~
If I seem to remember correctly, even the 6p didn't rotate a full 360 degrees. I actually think it is app dependant. I use this rotation control.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pranavpandey.rotation

Yes, I'm already using a rotation control app that has worked to allow inverted vertical rotation too, but I'm wondering why you believe it's not a bug, but possibly only about app dependency if it does full 360° rotation ?
I have to admit I haven't been too well up to date on Android devices and apps for at least 4 years now, and I know some apps want to prevent certain screen orientation settings, forcing the view in certain modes. However, it seems like some software setting is out of kilter, or even a bug to me for this particular partial rotation issue, not just about app dependency.
For instance, why would the home screen, with auto rotation turned on in the settings, allow for rotation to both horizontal positions, the normal portrait position, but not allow for an inverted portrait rotation?
Also, for even the internet browser apps, which from what I recall for several other Android tablets I owned years ago, they would all allow rotation to all screen positions for 360° when rotation was turned on, with this phone it wouldn't allow inverted portrait rotation, that is, not until I installed the Set Orientation app and used it. Do Chrome and Firefox for Android typically not allow for inverted portrait viewing unless forced by an orientation app or rooting the device to change system settings?
I did find that using the Set Orientation app it interferes with the factory installed camera app display when using the phone in either horizontal position, so I need to disable it when using the camera to take landscape images.
It isn't a huge issue, just a minor inconvenience (along with a couple others) which I came across but can certainly live with, because I'm really enjoying the phone so far for the most part.
~ Craig ~
Look at the phone/dialer App. I don't even think that allows any horizontal rotation or full rotation. Almost all lock screens on different phones don't allow rotation either unless you have a custom ROM installed. I just don't think it's a bug . I think it's done like that for a reason, good or bad. I think it may be a phone restriction because I think my Nexus 9 allows full rotation on some apps. You just might have to live with it.
I think the home screen doesn't rotate 360 degrees because who views phone stuff upside down?
For example, I had 360 rotation turned on for my phone/dialer app and if your laying down the App will go inverted . If the proximity sensor isn't quick enough and doesn't turn off your screen, you might hit the hangup button like I did one time.
Look, Netflix is landscape only.

On a device with small and relatively symmetrical bevels on the top and bottom like the Mate 8, or my previous LG G4, it's very handy to just pick up the phone and use it, irrelevant of the orientation.
I never use the power button and/or fingerprint scanner so a simple double (or on the Mate 8 usually triple) tap wakes up the device and hey presto, use it as it is. Is it the "right way round"? Great. Was it upside down? Does not matter, use it like this for now as well.
So for that reason I would also like to have an upside down possibility (haven't installed xposed yet as I find the need for it not great enough, for now). Other than that I find not a lot of real disadvantages of having the possibility anyway.
Note: not all apps worked as planned upside down but the dialer, homescreen, browsing, etc. made no difference regarding holding the phone
