With Android 7, cell-based location does not work
In location set "Save battery" and when "3 dots" in upper right corner, disable both WIFI and Bluetooth switches
Also turn off WIFI data transfer
Then reboot (or wait for 2-3 mins to clear location) and try to open Google maps
Your location point will be gray (obsolete location)
have anybody the same issue?
Yes I have noticed that for quite a while, not sure when it started.

I found that removing Google Maps has made battery life much much better but am sad that I don't have the app for when I actually want to use it. Is there any way to force the service to never run unless I have the app open?
The app doesn't use a noticeable amount of battery life for me.
Do you have GPS enabled in "Location" settings ? Also, go to Map app's settings and uncheck "report from this device" under it's "Location settings". See if that helps. I keep the network and wifi location reporting on, it doesn't seem to use much/any battery for me. I only turn GPS on when I am actually using it as such (like when I used the Navigation today).

I have turned off all location settings. For some reason it still sucks a massive amount of my battery. With maps installed my battery dies in 6 hours with very little usage. The last two days without it I've managed to make it 13 hours and still be at 50% by the time I plug it in at home. It took a ton of narrowing down the problem but maps is definitely it.
I'm running AOKP on my Galaxy S3 with the latest 4.1.2 gapps installed. Not sure if the rom would have anything to do with the way maps operates though.
Edit: I also have GPS turned off at all times until the app is running (tasker turns it on when I open certain apps).
So tasker isn't updating location properly.
I have it using "net" for location and location mode is set to "battery saving"
Upon phone restart this works...
Until I change mode to "high power" for navigation, etc...
After toggling location mode tasker will cease updating location until I reboot the phone.
Even after going back to battery saver... google maps location works... but tasker refuses to change.
Anyone else having issues like this? what gives?
I have used location triggers from Tasker but never the "location" in Tasker.
If you want a low battery location trigger, use the State->Cell Near instead.
If you are ok with slightly higher battery usage with higher accuracy and got USD1 to spare, try the AutoLocation plugin that uses GeoFences.
It works great for weeks at a time... until I change my location mode from "battery saving" to "high power" (and later back to "battery saving")
Only after I change location modes does it stop working until a reboot (even force close and restart won't fix the issue)
Anyway, I'd rather not install AutoLocation... it seems like it does the same thing the location profile does in tasker...

It definitely doesn't, if you are up for it, you can read up about Android Geofences, it is a new thing by Google and supposedly save more battery compared to previous methods of location detection.
Its sad that Tasker doesn't include this by default internally though.

I am also trying to do the same profile but I am using disconnect from work wifi as the trigger. Can you please share how did you create the action to change the location mode because I can't seem to find it in tasker.
I think it has to do with LTE. I wound up using cell tower location within Tasker instead and that works fine.

If I am on battery saving location and I switch off/on location and then select just battery saving location again I find my location cannot be found, ie I go into Google maps and it says waiting for location OR shows me a grey dot where my last location was, rather than the blue triangle.
Sometimes on the first entry to maps it does pick up my location but the second entry the location is always gone.
It can be 'fixed' by either a reboot or by clearing Google play services data.
Anyone else experience this?

You can uninstall the update to go back older version (maybe solve it) and wait newer update^^

same here...
I have an Indian model S8+ (SM-G955FD) and I don't have any lockscreen protection except for the basic "swipe to unlock". Also, my location setting is set to High Accuracy.
Now what I have noticed is that every time I wake up the phone and unlock it to homescreen, it requests my GPS location. I can see the location icon right next to Bluetooth icon (which is always on in my case) and the icon stays there as long as it takes to get a GPS lock (which is usually under 5 seconds).
I am wondering if this is a common behaviour or whether it is due to some app or setting I use.
Nope. I don't have that. And mine is set to high accuracy also. Must be some setting.

Probably some app checking the location upon the screen turning on.
Not with mine neither.
Check to make sure you have location history turned off, maybe?

There could be a few reasons. As someone said, possibly an app, that is being put to sleep with the power manager in these, and waking up the phone wakes it back up and it checks. This is probably the reason to be honest. Check location after it happens to see what apps are polling location
Hi, I just downloaded SatStat, an app from F-Droid that shows how many GPS satellites are connected. When indoors and standing by the window it shows multiple "Satellites used in fix" (the blue dots) but when I open Waze all I get is "Please proceed to highlighted route".
Why is Waze apparently not showing any satellites connected while SatStat shows lots of connections?
Am I doing something wrong, misunderstanding something or need to adjust a setting, etc?
I have an Asus Zenfone 8.
