Software update button - General Questions and Answers

Guys, I have a Samsung C5, it's a pretty ok midranger. so recently, my friend who has the same phone got a software update and i thought i'd get it too. The problem is, my software update button won't do anything - like literally it does nothing. It just kinda stays there. It's supposed to check for updates and give settings regarding when and how to update. The phone is not rooted, it's also running the stock rom, I havent really done anything with it. So if anyone has any idea what's wrong or has experienced a similar problem, i'd appreciate the help.

Do you mean system software updating?
It was said that some themes would cause 'install' or 'next' button greyed. Just for your reference.

[Completed] [Q] Problems with SuperSU SU Binaries on LG G2

Hello there.
I have been trying to learn and use custom ROMs on my LG G2 for a couple of weeks now, so far I haven't been doing too well. Luckily, smarter people than I on this forum have always brought me back from the brink of me causing a nuclear meltdown on my phone! Especially:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
Today, when I received an automatic update to SuperSU, a notification appeared in my notification shade informing me that my "SU Binaries Needed to be Updated!". I tapped on it, wanting to know more about these binaries that apparently required an update. This opened up the SuperSU app on my phone with a pop-up that also said the the SU binaries needed to be updated; I tapped continue. Another pop-up appeared telling me that if I had TWRP the binaries could possibly be updated through it (A "normal" option was also shown). My eager and naive mind chose to update via TWRP. My eagerness grew as my LG G2 booted into TWRP and seemed to install something. During this process, the phone rebooted again and my phone seemed to be just fine for ~1 minute.
Mission Accomplished!
Nope. To my utter horror (Though it was kind of expected) the phone force rebooted into TWRP again and attempts at rebooting to system have been met with being booted right back into TWRP. A factory reset had no effect as well. Following pattern, I made my way back to XDA and sniffed around for a while trying to find a thread where people had experienced something similar to myself. Unfortunately (or rather fortunately ), no one had. Then, I thought back to the post I posted above. FOTA is "firmware over the air" doesn't it? Could the command listed in the above post get me back to stock? Like I said before I'm a huge noob with a final goal of actually being able to contribute to XDA and others in the future. The key phrase being "I am a huge noob".
Minimal Information About The Phone (I am so sorry)
Android 4.4.2 Stock (Rooted)
Rooted With TowelRoot as I wanted to see if it actually worked
Installed TWRP with AutoRec (I'll link it below)
SuperSU as Root Manager (Installed from Play Store)
Verizon Model (VS980)
My Internal Storage was deleted about a week ago and I unfortunately did not make an NAndroid backup before I made this foray into unknown territory, I am terrible.
Link to AutoRec

Thank you so much for reading all of that, if you did! If you have any suggestions/links to any good tutorials for LG G2 ROMs they would be greatly appreciated! I have had some trouble with CM 11 in the past, but I think that was due to my own personal failings.
Hi,
It's great that you are trying to learn and doing your homework! That's what XDA is all about. ?
For many questions, try this thread...

Hey there!
Sorry for not responding to you for so long! I ended up using the FOTA command from the link I posted above and it worked like a charm! (Though it did once again delete my data ) Currently reinstalling everything and making an nandroid backup. Thank you for providing me with the help forums as well, they are quite good at what they do! Happy Sunday! Cheers!

[Completed] [Q] Installing Android Lollipop on a unknown tablet.

Hello! This is my first post on this forum, but I'll try to be helpful.
Well, I got my hands on a tablet. Which tablet? I have no idea. The "About page" on the settings only says that the Model number is M1706. And nothing else. (Besides that it's running on Android 4.2.2)
Since Android Lollipop is out, I've been dying to try it. Unfortunately, I don't have a device that supports it, so I though I'd try to install it on this random tablet that I have.
And here's where the problems start.
I tried flashing a AOSP Lollipop build to the tablet, but it always aborted. (From this thread)
Then I tried to install a custom recovery to see if that would help.
Managed to find the TWRP apk and install it. Unfortunately the app crashes when I open it.
So I tried downloading it from the App Store. The thing is that my tablet doesn't have the App Store app.
I tried many different versions, but none of them were able to be opened. It's like a process was killing the app, I think. I have no idea, though.
I then installed Clockworkmod ROM Manager to see if that would work.
It installed and opened, but it can't flash ROMS unless my tabled is rooted.
Since this is a mistery tablet, I don't think there are any root methods for it.
That's my situation right now.
Any suggestions on what I can do to achieve my goal of installing Android Lollipop on my tablet?
Hi,
I have to say, you're swimming in dangerous waters here.... And so far you've been extremely lucky. You can't flash anything to just about any device, unless it's made specifically for your device. Many times trying to do so can brick (destroy) your device.
So you'd be best to stop trying to install things made for other devices.
As far as your device getting Lollipop, that seems doubtful. I say that because it's on Jelly Bean.... Not even kit Kat. Of course that's an educated guess though. And until you find out what actual device you have, There's not much we can do for you. Also, you won't know if there's anything out there for your device... Cause you don't know what device you have.
I'd work on solving that mystery... And go from there. ?
Good luck.

Eyyup. I know what I'm doing is very dangerous, but this tablet is basically useless without any form of Google apps. Besides, I think it's a prototype tablet, so even if I brick it, I won't be sad. I got it for free, after all.
I'm trying my best to figure out which device it is. Usually when you have Google apps in a device, Google Play store shows its type when you install an app using Google Play Store on a desktop. Since I can't get Google Play Store in it, though, it may be a lot harder. I still need to try installing Google+ to see if it works. Will come back with the results in a bit.

[Q] Help downgrading to CyanogenMod 10

Using CM11 has been a disaster. Processes keep shutting down, the phone spontaneously restarts, and features seize up until I restart. I didn't upgrade it myself, so I don't know much about this process. I'd appreciate it if someone could help me get back to CM10. This phone is not officially supported, so I'm guessing that's why the guys at the CM forum haven't responded.
I have a Huawei Ascend Y300-151 with Android 4.4.4.
Of course, if someone thinks that my phone should work fine with CM11, and can suggest how to make that happen, that'd be just fine, too.

did you installed cm from here http://getcm.thebronasium.com/?device=u8833?
303
I didn't install it at all. This is just how I got the phone. I can tell you that it's CyanogenMod version 11-20141114-NIGHTLY-u8833
That could be the problem. You never know what the previous owner did or what they flashed could be a bad download, the wrong firmware, etc. Best to get back to stock and start over so you know exactly what has been done.
Hmm... probably. Right now going back to the stock ROM would be an improvement. Could I get some help with that, then? I haven't been able to find clear steps to do that with my specific phone, and when I went to Huawei's web site, I couldn't find the ROM for the Y300-151 and wasn't confident the Y300-100 was suitable.
I've used CM11, but I'm not familiar with that phone, so unfortunately I can't help with that specifically. There should be plenty of help on XDA. Just search for that specific model. Sometimes it takes a while to find what you need, but I'm sure its there. If it's done right CM11 has never let me down.
I'm sure CM11 works fine for most people, but my instincts tell me that my phone is underpowered for it. Ok, I'll look elsewhere or start a new thread about getting back to the factory ROM.
Yes, first thing to do is get back to stock. But don't give up on CM11. It should work fine on underpowered phones. It's just a slightly modified version of vanilla android which is a fairly light ROM.
I hope you figure it out.
Good luck!
If what you say is true, then I expect I'll be right back here again. I doubt that the wrong binary was used--I dunno, maybe something was wrong w/the installation procedure, but I'm sure the right binary was downloaded. In which case, maybe I should be attacking these problems directly, since I'm having trouble getting support for installing the factory ROM.

features not working on galaxy S3 after screen/frame swap.

Hello!
I have a SCH-I535PP that has a bad screen and a SPH-L710 that has a good one. I stripped them both down to the "frame" of the screen and replaced all the SPH's innards with the SCH's, besides the front facing cam because the screw is stripped out.
The problem with this is that the pcb is not meant for this "frame" and I have to leave a screw out so that it doesn't sandwich the pcb that connects the upper and lower sections of pcb, possibly un-connecting something as I screw it together. I also had to leave out the black screw as theres no hole in the SPH's frame.
So, the features I'm missing is the camera, vibration, wifi, and the home button. However I'm not sure if the home button worked on this frame so. But if that's the case (which is might be because I can't get into recovery) then I can't clear cache to see if that would fix the said hardware faults.
Worse comes to worse I just need the wifi really, but having the rest of it would be great. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much!

Great, so I have a phone that barely works. Least I got my data off it. Still though, there's got to be a way to fix it. I don't care about the vibration and home button but the wifi and the camera are crucial. I still get cell reception and bluetooth, but why don't I get wifi? Doesn't make any sense. It goes to turn on in the settings and turns off. I swapped over the antenna after using the doner phones one, is that what caused it? Using the older phones one? Or is the wifi section directly on the pcb? Maybe it got pinched somewheres or unplugged? No idea.
Thanks for the help!

Alrighty, good thing I have a home button emulator app and terminal emulator I can add su and reboot recovery. However I'm not sure which modem driver I should use? I have the I535PP, not sure where I'd find the file I need to flash in the samsung recovery. Also I got the phone a while ago, it has android 4.4.2. I did a factory reset when I got it, however I've been using a work around to get around the activation screen. I was told if you act like you're going to use the phone with a different sim they'll activate the phone, should I try that? Or should I try and flash a different software to it? Also I've heard of a thing called knox sensor? Will that go off and brick the phone if I try to flash a different version of w/e to it? Also I should add that the phone was rooted with kingroot.
( I've got a sdcard I'll put it onto, it's a .zip right? There anything else I should know about? )
Also, my basebrand version is: I535PPVRUBNF5
Thanks so much!

I believe that the NF5 is the last one released.
I really can't give you much more information than this. I've never had the Prepaid S3.
If you need the Stock Firmware for the I535PP NF5, i do have it on my File Host Account. I uploaded it for another member a while ago and kept it there.

Okay? So should I make a backup and restore it with that firmware? That's basically the same as doing a factory reset right? Should I try to do a factory reset first? I'm new to all this so what should I use to backup? Just the standard android thing (if there is one). Restoring from that backup wont bring my issues back will it? Or is the whole firmware thing just essentially "drivers"? and doesn't reset the phone? I'm confused.
Also could I get the link to said firmware? Again, thanks so much!
I also found this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga.../rom-tw-4-4-2-i535ppvrubnf5-deodexed-t3427237
Seems to be a modified version of the OS/firmware. Idk if it'll work for my phone though. I need a modified loader or something? Any suggestions?

First of all, here's the link for the stock Firmware (it's zipped up so all you need to do is unzip it).
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120750115
That other link is a modified stock Firmware. It's basically the stock Firmware that's debloated and other modifications that's outlined by the developer.
Since the device cannot be unlocked for a custom firmware, that is basically the stock Firmware that's modified and only has what's needed for the devices recovery to think it's the real deal.
I have an S4 that can't be unlocked but, it's got the stang5litre firmware that's modified the same way.
I hope i explained it okay via text...

Well with you saying it's not unlocked, when I first boot the phone it says custom with an unlock padlock? Is that what you mean? So am I set to try and flash that de-bloated version and try it out? It says there that I need safestrap. No idea what that is but I looked into it some, should I try and use it to flash that version or use the standard samsung recovery? Or will it not work that way, probably not.
Also the link you sent me I got a "504 Gateway Time-out"
EDIT: I rooted it with kingroot and I'm fairly certain that it made the custom bit appear. Did it disable the knox sensor or something, and make it to where I can flash custom roms or w/e?
EDIT2: The site was temp down, got it now.
Alright, I downloaded the file you sent me. Going to copy it to my sdcard. Is there something specific I should name the file? Also I want to extract it so it's .MD5 not .zip like you said? Also what option do I select in the recovery mode? Apply update from external storage?
Thanks so much!
Well I can't even connect my device to my PC. It wont show up. I had this problem before and I can't remember what I did to fix it... Keeps showing up as a modem. I've installed the correct drivers though. wtf... Then tried samsung keis, didn't work. Tried samsung smart switch which said my device was supported but when I went to connect it, it decided it wasn't..... I'm trying USB driver version 1.5.14.0, but when I connect my device windows update installs more ****. Is that the problem? It keeps installing the wrong driver? Idfk starting to get annoyed now lol, going to take a break from it and see what you say tomorrow.
(it's not the cable either, I'm using the data/charge cable from my logitech g700s)
Thanks again.
Edit: I'm on windows 7 x64, and in the devices menu it's showing as a modem.
I've been looking into it a little more. I found a loader called TWRP. However I can't find the specific I535PP version, again, or is it this one?
https://twrp.me/samsung/samsunggalaxys3verizon.html
So if I installed that, I should be able to install that custom rom? A de-bloated version would be great, it runs a little slow, and gets pretty hot playing games. Plus a little change too, but I still need to backup all my data and some game saves. I just need to be able to access it from my pc >_< I've format'd my pc since I had it working last
Edit: The rom install instructions say to use either safestrap or flashfire. I'm not sure which one to use, or if I should try to use the TWRP. Or if I should try neither of them because I might brick my device? Idk, can't wait to hear from you. Or should I just forget about all this and try and flash the original firmware you sent me?
Edit2: I also made a thread here asking the same questions.
Thanks!
Unfortunately I still can't get it to connect to my pc. There's a bunch of other threads I've looked at but trying different things haven't made it work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
wtf, even booting into download mode does nothing when plugging it to my pc. I have no idea what's up with this phone... It says the following up at the top left:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SCH-I535PP
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 2
It's also stuck in download mode now, and just says "Downloading... Do not turn off target !!" Wtf is it downloading???
It's great that I have an overcomplicated flash light essentially, or if I restart the device possibly a paper-weight. I'll give it a little longer and see if it'll shut off by the button, if not I'll pull the battery.
Edit: It was fine, but still an overcomplicated flashlight. I guess you normally get out of DL mode by holding home which doesn't work for me, but removing the battery was fine.
Another unfortunate thing is that I can't enable mtp mode because of the weird way I have to get into the phone. My notification bar doesn't exist at the top, when I was first using the phone it would randomly pop up and work out of the blue, but if I restarted the phone or hit the home button it would send me back the activation screen, therefore having me to go into settings and enable standard home screen mode and a couple seconds later it pops to the home screen or lock screen if I don't type my code.
Any idea what the number is I have to dial specifically for the I535PP? By VZW? I've tried them all
Hope you haven't forgotten about me @Ibuprophen xD Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks and look forward to hearing from you!
Also I just found this video
https://youtu.be/9LLOmoE-tp0
So from what this vid says do I just click AP on odin while my phones in download mode, click the file you sent me and let it go? I don't think the same would apply to the other flash install, as it isn't compiled into a .md5 format.
But again I still haven't been able to back some files up off my phone. Only if my pc had bluetooth, because that surprisingly works on the phone. Might just get a usb bluetooth adapter if I have to... So annoying, idk what I did last time to fix it...
I really do apologize @Sokoloft for not responding to you lately...
I've just been getting a bit swamped with various items regarding my current developments, unreleased developments, various other XDA responsibilities and my personal responsibilities at home.
After a quick review of your posts here, i am not sure exactly where you are at now and even what your trying to do now exactly.
I did notice a question or two on other posts and, though their not bad questions in itself but, they are actually reflecting (to myself and others) that your not really reading the OP's nor are even searching the threads themselves for previously answered questions from other members that match/are similar to your question.
I'm not trying to nor is it my place to lecture any member but, I'm just providing you with a reflection of what I, personally, am viewing/understanding.
I just want to quickly add that if you're that lost in what you're doing, i can only recommend/suggest (in a friendly way) to do your homework by looking into and understanding what you want to do, is it possible to do and how those actions affect your device.
With that stated...
I just want to remind you of 2 things that I've stated on a previous post(s).
1) I don't have/never had the Prepaid S3.
2) There's no way to unlock the bootloader of your specific prepaid device.
The post regarding that customized version of the stock ROM is a good alternative as well as (i think it's available for the S3 Prepaid) the stang5litre that's also a customized version of the stock ROM.
If you can respond to my other questions (above), I'll try to provide you with some help the best way i can.
Thank you very much for your time, patience and understanding with this!

Okay, so where I am at is that I cannot connect the phone to my pc. It registers itself as a modem still no matter what driver I've tried. I can't transfer files from it that I need, plus I can't get that md5 file on the sdcard if that's what I have to do to flash the file you sent me. Or do I have to use ODIN? Regardless I'm not even sure if ODIN recognizes the device. At one point when I had tried samsung keis it almost established connection with the software, but nothing in windows explorer.
I'll get back to you more on this later tonight.
Thanks again.
EDIT: I had this problem when I initially got the damn phone, and I can't remember wtf I did to fix it. This is immensely frustrating...
EDIT2: I also need the number to dial for VZW I535PP to enable MTP mode as I can't get to my notification bar. That might help? Every one that I've tried doesn't go into that menu. Could it be because my phone isn't activated?
Essentially @Ibuprophen once I can connect to the device I'm going to back some game data up and some photo's and then flash the file you sent to me. Do I use ODIN to do that or put it on my sdcard and use the standard recovery? Or can I not because I have a locked boot-loader? Or can I because it's modified to look like the original? I'm confused...
Currently contacted samsung support, I'll see what they say about it not connecting. This is crazy though, it should just plug up and work without all this bs.
Thanks again, hope to hear from you soon.
I haven't forgotten about you @Sokoloft...
I plan to provide you with a brief tutorial on restoring the Stock Firmware using Odin for your device.
In the meantime, i just uploaded the Stock PIT files for your device. PIT is short for "Partition Information Table" and is used with the firmware file in Odin to tell it how and where to re-partition the internal memory for the factory firmware installation. The PIT file isn't typically needed but, in some cases, it is needed.
The following link is to the PIT files but, be sure to grab the one that matches the amount of internal memory of your device.
The Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 Prepaid devices were released with 16, 32 & 64 GB of internal memory.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=225361
I'll be back with some more information for you.

Calling for help.. H90021z or H90022b firmware user

Hello,
As we know there are many H90021w firmware user found their phone is not working as it should be. There are some issues like fingerprint sensor is not working, cant uninstalling apps, etc. I found the only way to solve is by updating the firmware to 21z or 22b only. I've try to find in on the net throughly only to find after the v21w firmware, newer firmwares are stored in the AT&T server, not on the LG server anymore. And the only way to get the OTA is by using an AT&T simcard and in the US. This definitely a problem to those who live outside the US just like me.
And it's not possible to downgrade, trust me, maybe I've try everything that possible including taking out the emmc from the board, erasing everything and put the lollipop firmware in it. Simply not working. Mind you, when I put that emmc (lollipop) on another board (vs990 too) which were originally lollipop and never use the 21w firmware, it's working fine.
So basically updating to 21z or 22b is the only way. Also if there's any 21w user and the phone is normal, maybe you can help too.
All we need is to put the phone on qualcomm 9008 mode, copy some partitions, zip it and upload to somewhere. It's perfectly safe as I did it many many times to backup my phone and some friend's phones (v10 and G4). We'll exclude the imei partition and userdata, so it will be safe for you.
This method is also useful for other purposes. You can full backup your phone and restore it if theres anything happen. For those who have bootlooped phone, you can backup it and restore to another working phone and you'll have almost the same state of the phone. Of course the type of the phone should be identical and the arb is ok. If the arb is stil 0, you can even switch the carrier to Tmobile.
This could be used for many purposes, but let's get this one done first. If its working, I'll put it in a new "how to" thread so many will be helped. We can also arrange donations for those who help. We can discuss it by pm.
So hopefully someone can help and we can discuss on private message about the method in details.
Thank you
Nobody?
Hi all,
Probably my previous request were too much.
I found an easier and faster way to do it. No need to go to mode 9008 or modifying the cable.
All it need is LGup patched which can be found on https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/guide-patch-lgup-to-unlock-features-t3652222 and a normal data cable.
If anybody willing to help, feel free to let me know.
Thank you

I hope you have news. I have the same problem without solution so far.
Nope. Although still hoping to find someone eager to help, I think this H900 section is practically dead.

Wow awesome, thank you!
I already got 21z by myself and planning to ask a few $$ from others since no one helping since months ago. But with your help we can help others too. I'll send a pm later today with some instruction, need to back home first and recheck the method.
Thanks again.

Yeah I'll need some instructions, its been a long time since I last used LGUP or anything similar... ^^
Now, I just checked, I am running H90022b, but I'm not entirely sure whether this would solve your problem.
I have an LG V10, AT&T locked, but with a verizon motherboard... This means that in my case, some security options don't work, I can't update, can't use a fingerprint sensor and worst of all, I can't deinstall apps. (I'm never buying refurbished devices again ^^)
However, if you have a normal V10 (H900), this should be no problem. The software is still the same, its flashed as a H900, whilst it should be a H901 I think.
