I apologize if this has been asked/answered before but when I search I only see questions pertaining to changing the OP's profile pic. My issue is a bit different. I have pictures of my family on my phone that I used to identify them. Since we switched to the Galaxy S8 it seems the the profile pics for my family have been overwritten by their Samsung profile pics. How do I force my phone to use the profile pics I choose for them instead of their Samsung profile pics?
Unfortunately this doesn't work. When I find the contact and click edit I am presented with cancel or save option and then just below that there are options for Goolge, Samsung Account, Duo, and Profile Sharing. The pictures for Google and Samsung Account are correct. There is no pic for Duo as I have not set one but the picture for profile sharing is set to a Lion and this is the one that shows up as a contact picture. I cannot change it because this is the picture my daughter selected for sharing her Samsung profile and for some reason it is what displays with her contact info.
It appears that if I unlink the Profile Sharing account for a family member, it restores the picture I want to use for them in my contacts. the only problem I am seeing with this solution is that now I have two separate entries for them in my address book. I'm not sure why but Profile Sharing overrides everything else. I am still hoping to keep my daughter's profile sharing account linked to the contact info I already have for her in my Google address book without it overwriting the picture I use in my google address book so any ideas would be welcome!
If you haven't figured this out it's pretty easy. Open up your contacts, select the person you are trying to change the profile picture for. Hit Details to view the contact. Select the options menu, at the top you will see 3 options Edit Share and the 3 little dots I call the 3 little dots the options menu. There select "Set as Default", select the picture you want to be default pic and Viola.
Found this thread using the search, but the solution isn't solving my problem.
I have the exact same issue as OP, family pictures as contacts - but the ones that have Samsung phones switch to their generic Samsung picture. The Samsung contacts app always overrides the " Set As Default" option.
Yes, that does work - I choose set as default and choose Google instead of Samsung Account - but it doesnt stick..... It always reverts back to their Samsung Account picture.
Also, for each Samsung contact I have a bunch of Samsung accounts listed even though they only have one. I've attached a screenshot below.
Any ideas?

Hi there,
After finally getting the Android Stock Contacts app on my Desire, I'm finally able to use the "Sync Group" option to only show one group (let's call it "cormie) in the phone book. This is all fine, I have ticked off all other groups and only "cormie" is ticked on. It displays the "cormie" contacts and the contacts on the SIM (I can delete them off it later I guess) but the main objective is to just use the "cormie" contacts and nothing else.
However, when I go to add a new contact and save it, when I sync it to Gmail, the new entry doesn't show up in "cormie" but only in "all contacts" and once the contact is saved on the phone, it doesn't appear in the phone book because I'm only showing "cormie" contacts and it's not there To see the entry I have to go back in and to show all contacts, then I see it.
This puts a great hindrance on the purpose of the Sync Group option. The guy in post 10 here seems to have got it going, but as you can see in my reply, post 11, it's not saving to the desired group for me!
I'd really appreciate if anyone has a solution for this and could explain how to get it working properly. Or is there an alternative contacts program that will do it? Also, if anyone knows how to not display SIM contacts in the phonebook please share too
Any feedback appreciated at all!
Brilliant! I think I got a workaround
When I first started using the phone after rooting it, I selected "contacts" to be the default for all the options and it actually turns out that the Sense "people" app allows you to save a contact to a group even though it doesn't allow you to "sync groups", choosing which groups you want to sync only, so I needed to get the "people" app to be the default for adding contacts.
What I had to do was go to the main menu > settings > applications > manage applications > scroll down to contacts > and press "clear defaults"
This clears "contacts" as being the default for all the phonebook related actions. If you go back to the home screen and click "phone" you can set "contacts" as the default for this, but then when you go to add a new contact in contacts, it will ask what app you want to add a contact with, click set as default and click the "people" app. Now all "add to contact" actions will be carried out using "people" app, here you can select the group you wish to save it to and then it will show up perfectly in the "contacts" "contacts" menu and will be synched correctly to the chosen group on Gmail!
I think, after 18 days of buying it, I'm finally ready to put my normal sim card in the phone and start using it as a phone! Finally!
I realize this is WAY later than the original post, but have any of you found a solution to not being able to add a new contact to the group you want to add it to? I'm using an HTC Hero (cdma) that I Froyoed with aospmod 2.2.1, so I cannot use the htc "people" app - at least I read that. Sorting by groups is mucho importante to me and I find the default contacts app built into aospmod lacking in this area.
Thanks if you even reply to this!
just out of curiosity since i can't find an option.
Is there any possible way to enable the facebook sync but NOT use the facebook pictures and/or last names
It seems that once it syncs theres no possible way to change it since everytime i change a picture or a last name it just gets added right back on.
but i do like seeing the status updates and having the quick link to the profiles, i just hate the other stuff it does
it'd be nice if the facebook sync just added info to the standard gmail contact card and not "sync it with another account"..i wish it would allow you to delete facebook phone numbers and save email addresses from facebook to the gmail contact card and save contact pics and names easily..this feature needs a lot of work imo...
yeah. well judging from the no yes answers i'm just going to assume that this is impossible
For pictures, YES it's possible and easy to do!
Background:
I have my Gmail contacts with pictures I customized for each contact.
Contacts with Facebook have their own pictures and get automatically chosen as the default picture if Facebook Sync is enabled.
Here's how to fix it.
1. Launch CONTACTS and select the contact that has the facebook picture.
2. Press MENU, then EDIT CONTACT.
3. You will notice that the contact picture that is NOW SHOWN is the original gmail contact picture!
4. TAP on the picture, and choose "USE THIS PHOTO".
5. Tap DONE, now your gmail contact picture is the default picture!
You have to do this to all your Facebook contact pictures that you don't want.

Hello,
I have many phone book accounts synchronized on my phone (Google, Funambol, Twitter, etc.) and I would like to know if it is possible to set the default picture for all the address book.
In other words, I would like that every contact would show the picture which is memorized in my Funambol Account.
I know that to modify the picture I can go to the single contact's details, press the "chain" (which means such contact is linked) and select the picture I want to be shown, but this is not persistent and I have to re set every time the picture to the one I want.

Even i would like to find out if there is any way you can automate this process to set pic account by default rather than doing it manually for the 600 or so contacts i have...
With Syncmypic you can add Facebook contact pictures to your phonebook. Maybe there is a tool like this for you in the market.
Mmm. An option for default source or sources with selectable priority would be nice
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
It sounds very strange to me that Android doesn't have something to customize that! I don't think it would be so difficult to implement.
Maybe send this as a wish list item to your favorite ROM dev?
Does anyone know whether contacts on the One S that are linked to Facebook and using the profile picture, should have their pictures updated when the Facebook profile picture is updated?
Status updates seem to work, but pictures don't as far as I can tell.
I've tried searching for this problem and there seems to have been a lot of issues when Facebook changed their security options, but that was ages ago. There also seem to be a lot of solutions involving the "Facebook for HTC sense" account, but that doesn't seem to exist in the version of Sense on the One S.
How does it work now? Do the updates come from the Facebook account created when you sign in to Friendstream or to the official Facebook app?
Any help would be appreciated.
Alex
Anyone?
Does anyone actually have the Facebook contact photos updating? Or doe it simply not work?
Alex
Have you tried HaxSync yet? Cool thing about it is that it totally keeps quietly in the background, you can set when it should pull the HD contact pics from Facebook for synchronisation and (one option I really enjoy) it is capable of syncing the birthdays of your phone contacts which will then be integrated into the contact itself as well as your phone calendar. You wanna have status updates, too? Oh, it syncs them as well... ;-)

HaxSync looks good, especially for non-Sense ROMs, but why do I have to pay for an app to do something that surely is meant to be part of Sense.
Also, how do they work together? If I use HaxSync to sync my contacts how do I stop it from conflicting with Sense's contact sync. Also, where do status updates appear? In Friendstream? In the contact itself?
How are contacts paired with the Facebook contact? Does it use the same mechanism as Sense does?
Alex
PS Back to my original question, has anyone got profile pictures updating using Sense?

Mine are updating, but not instantly even with autosync turned on.
In my case profile pictures that are linked with my contacts updated only after i entered facebook application and friends section.

That doesn't seem to help for me. Even pressing the sync button from within the Facebook App doesn't help.
I've also noticed another problem, which makes me wonder if the contact picture syncing is actually a Facebook issue; messages in my news feed in the Facebook app have the correct profile pictures, but if I look in the Friends list, some have old pictures.

If that is the case it could very well be a problem with facebook itself as you said.
Try to un-sync some random contact with a picture that didn't update itself and then link it to facebook again manually, see if that brings out a new current profile picture of that particular contact.

I've tried that before and it does work, but it's not a real solution.
I thought I'd give HaxSync a go anyway and it does seem to work quite well. The contact pictures are certainly higher resolution. Installing it also seems to have caused the Sense Facebook account to update all its pictures too. I'm not sure why that would happen.
However the pictures shown on the friends tab of the Facebook app are still incorrect. It's not as if some of them are recent changes either, at least a couple were changed weeks ago and they haven't updated.
I'll have to wait and see now what happens when a friend updates their picture. I expect the HaxSync version of the image to update, but the Sense version not to.
Weird

You have to edit the build.prop in system, I made a post somewhere on what to change in order to remove the legal restriction. I'll find it and edit this post when I get to a computer.
EDIT: I know this is part of what is causing the clickable links from contacts to be handled differently, your more than welcome to read the article but in a short summary Apple suid HTC over having direct linking from contacts to other account based links ( It's owned by Apple which means HTC had to comply in order to be able to sell the devices but here you go. I didn't find this but I did figure out how to get it to work for our device as it's in the build.prop differently. This will stop pics from adding to your contacts via facebook, thanks to apple!
I posted this fix over there as well but in Root Explorer go to "system/build.prop" and make sure to tap the box on the top right corner of the screen to "R/W" other wise this won't work, now copy the build.prop file to your download folder in "sdcard" and rename it ("build.prop.bak") for safe keeping and follow the instructions I posted below.
On line:"34" from the top of (system/build.prop)there is the first line named : "ro.da1.enable=true" make this line false and add the second line: "ro.da1.method=false" .
Now go to the bottom where it is listed as: "ADDITIONAL BUILD PROPERTIES" the third line is the same as above "ro.da1.enable=true"
so change this one also and add the second line again.
It should look like this:
ro.da1.enable=false
ro.da1.method=false
"ADDITIONAL BUILD PROPERTIES"
ro.da1.enable=false
ro.da1.method=false
Link posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27198692#post27198692 as posted this is for US consumers as this is passed legally here against HTC for linked contacts restrictions.
I'm confused. Are you saying that the mechanism for updating Facebook contact pics is controlled by the same booleans in build.prop as clickable links in SMSs? Does that mean that contact pics don't work at all for US users without making these changes.
Clickable links in SMS work fine for me (I'm in the UK), and contact pictures work the first time the account is added, but the problem is that they don't update when someone changes their profile picture.

EDIT: The noob found the answer 2 minutes after posting about it, after not finding anything in the hours of searching prior to posting. My bad.
You know I'm the top right corner of our device it will display your Google+ current profile picture whichever one is active when you first log on.
I've since changed my profile picture and wanted to know how to make up "sync" the only option I see is to go into settings and change the avatar locally but that just doesn't make logical sense to me setting how I didn't have to change or choose rather the first time
I have never gotten my own icon to be consistent. All I can recommend is both setting it locally and setting it on Google+.
That sucks, I don't keep photos locally on my device
Can't you save your G+ one temporarily? It's a dumb hack but an easy one.
Please close this thread. I figured it out. You go into settings all apps then contact manager and clear data, then go into Google plus settings and on contacts make sure it has the keep contacts stored checked then go out of it and it should sync your current
G+ photo
