Smartwatches still worth it? - General Questions and Answers

Are smartwatches still worth the money? Apart from notifications, what else do you use your smartwatch for? Also, is there also any modding that can be done for Android Wear?

Yes. Show new notifications. Thus, you do not need to constantly get your phone to see what's come to you. It is enough to look at the clock and decide whether this message is important or not.
Trackers of physical activity. Many smart watches can track your physical activity by measuring the pulse, the number of steps passed, the speed of running and so on.
Time. And we will say thank you for that!
Other. This includes voice control (not too usable yet), camera, weather, calendar events and other small functions

It's worth, if you have tons of money to waste

I agree with jamesdon I bought one thought I would love it but for me it was a waste of money and impractical.

[Q] What phone would you recommend?

EDIT! I just realized there was a thread/discussion dedicated to this, if a mod could merge me over that would be great! Sorry guys!
I have read a ton of threads but I figure I am better off making a specific post.
I get to upgrade next month - and I probably won't use it right away but I am wondering what phone would be the best for a heavy user that likes Cyanogenmod.
Things I like to have/do:
I play ingress, a lot.
I browse the web, a lot.
I rarely play many other games
I do use my phone all day for work - mainly for remoting into servers and testing wireless connections.
Google Maps pretty often
CM11
Good GPS
Will be somewhat easy to root/unlock the bootloader
Awesome battery life is a plus, but I have gotten use to carrying a spare pre-charged battery or my anker so that's at the bottom.
Screen size is a "whatever" thing, but I have been wanting to try something larger than my S3
I would like to get the note 4, but I feel like it might be really hard to ever install a different rom because of knox? Not really sure.
Is the new Moto stuff gonna be simple to load new roms to?
I'm lost with trying to decide where to blow some money.
Good on you for realizing it, I'll just leave my normal message here for the next person that won't read it and start their own thread. Good luck!
"There are 3 threads devoted to discussions about devices, please repost your question in one of these three threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread."

What's good in the appstore?

So, I'm creating this thread for a couple reasons.
1. I have an abundance of google play credit, but have everything I really need already.
2. Hopefully other newbies or seasoned vets can come here to find hidden gems.
I have some excess google play credit to spend. Question is, what do I want? Maybe a bunch of games? I'm really considering just spending it to help support some committed devs. Question is, who or what?
Maybe there's an app that I simply overlooked that I'll be kicking myself over if I spend it foolishly.
Recommendations please

most of it is s*** games.
i only use apps in the utility section. most seem like there for little kids.
Use AppLock to lock apps so nosy people cant open them.
I don't buy a lot of apps but like the previous post I mainly use utility apps.
Network signal apps are always handy when you're trying to figure out which tower you're hitting and the signal you coming through on. This information is especially useful if you are have a technical issue and need to get tech support involved. I find they do push back a little when you start overloading them with a bunch of information the average user doesn't have but being armed with information helps expedite resolving issues.
I recently started using a TV app. It's a preloaded app that has a built-in channel guide. The app also lets me use the phone as a TV remote.
With the number of available apps you just need to think about your daily life and see if there are any things you do a lot that there might be an app for that.
It looks like a little strange to me. Many many people don't buy paid apps because of the money and the payment policy. But, you are here looking for "How to spend my Google play credit to something worthy". Sorry I can't help you. There are few suggestions but I guess you've already check these out, Dynamic watch, Better battery stat, smart keyboard, pro compass, some launcher maybe....

Smartwatch research: Samsung users needed!

Hi everybody!
First off, thank you to Mike Channon for approving this post.
My name is Sam Penny and I'm conducting research with the University of Manchester. I'm looking at the attributes of smartwatches that users consider to be most important. We're hoping the research will help smartwatch companies to refine their products!
If you own a smartwatch and you could give 5 - 10 minutes of your time to do this questionnaire, I would be very grateful! You access the survey here: https://goo.gl/NMMsze
Most of our respondents are currently Apple Watch users. So anybody with a Samsung Gear that's willing to contribute would be making a big impact!
I'm also giving away some Amazon giftcards as a thank you, if anybody likes giftcards
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a message.
Thanks in advanced, and have a great day!
Sam
Just finished the survey. I currently own a Huawei watch and should have a refurbished gear s2 classic in the next day or two.
Hi Vicvon!
Thanks a lot for going through my survey.
I really should add an option for if people own more than one smartwatch! Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, I have several but responded using my gear s3
Samsung Gear s2 Classic uses a proprietary cradle to program with, so unfortunately it's impossible to get inside the watch save for screen and buttons (that I am aware of).

Thanks everybody! The survey will be open for a few weeks so if you know anybody that you think would like to contribute towards the research then feel free to share the link.
Like I said, if anybody has any questions send me a message any time.
Done.
Now that I think about it, if like to have seen some questions on why users have a smart watch.
Mine is the s2 3g. I bought it not for the fun of a smart watch, but for the safety and convenience of having a phone on me at all times. Instead of buying a phone for our kids so we can keep in touch, I've thought how much better and cheaper a watch is.
Anyway. Sorry for the digression.

Hey Merlin!
Digressions are great because they feed thinking! Especially from somebody that clearly has experience with smartwatches.
I'm testing a sort of older theory in a new context – which may mean some of the questions are not 100% spot on for smartwatches, which is a limitation of my research.
Safety is an interesting issue, and definitely something I'll look into.
Thanks again to everybody that completed the survey. The response from everyone has been awesome.
Just finished the survey.
Done
Currently i use the Gear S2, dont like very much tizen but i like the idea of using a smartwatch as a shadow of my phone, or even replace my phone in event of an emergency
Finished and thanks for the interest. I would suggest questions about reasons for and benefits of usage - check email, health device, etc. For example I first bought a smart watch because I am hard of hearing and was missing work emails. Now Im retired and its more of an emotional thing as I like the technology and I use it to track my workout. Also a question about what more is wanted, say longer battery life or better waterproofing. Just a suggestion.
Finished survey. Was expecting questions about most used functions, what are actual perceived benefits, etc, Found the survey pretty generic and wonder what the objectives related to survey are.
Hi guys! Sorry for the delay... it seems the XDA emails have been going to my spam folder

Thanks for feedback Roger. A few people have suggested looking into benefits such as health apps. This is a really interesting area and might make up my next paper!

Hey OnnoJ. I'm testing a specific 'technology acceptance' model called UTAUT2. It's the universal theory for the acceptance and use of technology, 2!
You can find the paper here: http://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.ed...e=Unified_theory_of_acceptance_and_use_of.pdf
I've mentioned before, it doesn't get into the specifics of smartwatches. It is a very general overview. However, it's never been done in a smartwatch context before – which is why I wanted to test it.
Survey was completed
Done.
Did the survey. Glad you mentioned the model you are testing. I have the S2 Classic and for me it's a useful tool not particularly fun or entertaining. I can keep my phone on silent, track health and...tell time! Now that I'm using android pay I don't use it for loyalty cards like I used to.

Shopping for an Android Tablet (Advice Plz!)

I tried using Google without much avail.
Currently when my wife and I travel we use our laptop to binge watch multimedia while sitting on an airplane. We figured for smaller space and longer battery life a tablet may not be a bad idea. I haven't owned a tablet since the NEXUS 7 (2013) and don't know much about them these days.
My quick searches online show tablets with Android 4.4, 5.1, & 6.0. That's crazy!
I'm looking for one that is mod friendly. (e.g. custom ROM for Nougat/Oreo with Magisk/SuperSU support). Most of the models I look for I cross search in Google with XDA and don't find much.
Obviously want a decent screen and decent headphone jack for audio. Likely need an SD card for additional media storage.
Lastly not looking to spend a ton of money on it to the point it would be cost prohibitive (e.g. just go buy a new laptop at that point).
Thanks!

Any off the shelf mobile with true system wide equalizer?

Hi,
I have a hearing disability and have had a problem finding a true solution to a non-rooted phone with a complete system-wide equalizer.
The closest I came was with my old LG Nexus 5x rooted with Arise EQ.
I "thought" Sony was famous for their music part of the phone and purchased the XZ1 Compact but of course ended disappointed. I also have waited to root it based on all the "green screen" camera feedback.
I read somewhere that the LG v10 had a true system-wide EQ but I am not sure; and it is too expensive to continue buying phones for this purpose.
It baffles me that even an iPhone has not gotten to the stage of a true EQ. They "own" their own ecosystem and it would be super simple for them to "disable" local EQ (app EQ) if the global one was selected. They have had EQ profiles from the start but no development has ever been done to further support hearing disability. For Android is a no-brainer.
Many apps have now a built-in EQ, but not all. I listen to for example audiobooks and here is the worst support ever. Amazon, and all the rest lack any EQ support, and on Android even do not support the vendors EQ.
So to my Q: I really dream of a phone series with complete system-wide EQ. Like off the shelf "integrated" Arise or something. On that level.
Thank you so much if you know that you have a phone that works with any audio app and can reply back. I know I always can "root" and get a nice-to-root phone; but I find it stupid to having to root, skipping version updates etc only for this feature - so hence my Q
