Returning for refund via Digital River (HTC UK) - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

So I bought a Sapphire Blue 128/6GB Dual Sim U11 and discovered it does not have Wifi Calling and Voice Over LTE for the EE network in the UK.
I only bought this phone just before Christmas day and trying to get a response from HTC is like trying to get blood out of a stone.
I tried through the support pages on HTC UK and got no response, then tried through the Digital River page to contact HTC.
Eventually get a response and they want me to post the phone to Janki, ul. Falencka 1B, Raszyn, 05-090, Poland
Is this correct?
I then received a separate ticket with a sheet to attach to the order, I opened the PDF and it's for a repair! I don't want the device repaired as it is working perfectly fine, just not adequate for my needs and want to return it for a refund.
Tempted to stick the thing on eBay and cut my losses if this is how incompetent HTC are at customer service.

Digitalriver seems to be a software delivery company. Do not send it to them unless you bought it from them.
The problem isn't the phone. It is the carrier. EE only allow branded phones to use their facilities on pay monthly contracts. WiFi calling isn't available on ee payg.
As the phone isn't faulty you're not entitled to a refund. If the phone is capable of wifi calling in the advertising but you can't find *excluding ee* then it isn't sold as advertised under the Trade Descriptions Act. The seller would have to either make it work or refund you.
If you bought it from HTC directly then you'll have to contact them. You can contact HTC via their .com website and choose the support section, live chat. This is best at around 7pm UK time as this works out around 2pm Eastern USA, 9am Western. I spoke to them myself yesterday at that time for a question I had.
You could ask EE if there is any way that they can manually provision the phone to use wifi calling..

1. VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling works fine on the U11 on stock unbranded firmware. The reason it isn't there on the dual sim model is simply because EE carrier settings seem to be amiss on dual sim firmware. Wouldn't surprise me if op flashed custom ROMs that support dual sim firmware and managed to get both working.
2. You have 14 days to return any product or cancel any contract for ANY reason apart from personalised products or earphones

14 days only if it is faulty, not as described, not satisfactory or not fit for purpose and you must tell them in writing within 14 days but is not a given as it purely up to the "retailers" refund policy.
Please give correct information as you are another who doesn't know the law.

Also the 30 day contract cooling off period doesn't apply as he didn't get it on contract from ee or htc. He bought the device direct and loaded his own sim.

Firstly, your own link states
When you buy goods online, over the phone or by post you have 14 days' grace after receiving your order (or signing up to a service) to change your mind and cancel, and this can be for any reason.
You will be protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which apply if you buy something away from the seller's premises, such as at home or at work.

Secondly, I have returned many products purchased online within 14 days with zero hassle from everyone apart from very.co.uk who crumbled too once I mentioned the distance selling regulations.
It would seem you are the one who doesn't know UK law lol

Op, you're dangerously close to being outside of the 14 day window.

Let me explain myself a little better, I was in a bit of a rush when I wrote the original message. I already own a Black U11 4GB UK model and wished I bought the Sapphire Blue when I saw one in the flesh, decided to for a small upgrade hence the 128GB, 6GB memory and dual sim. My Black 4GB model is still within the extended return window from Amazon as I bought it in December.
After reading around about a lot of hassle trying to get a refund from HTC directly I may just stick with the Blue 128GB phone as I don't want to be chasing a refund for months on end, I can still send back my 4GB black model to Amazon. Plus I'm pretty much past the 14 day window seeing as HTC took so long to respond to me.
My 4GB Black model is unbranded and HTC_001 and supports Wifi Calling and Voice Over LTE as it popped up when I put my EE sim in.
I guess I could always root the dual sim model if I really wanted the network features, I've not had Wifi Calling before so that's not so much an issue but I had Voice Over LTE on my HTC One M9, it's a feature I would miss but it's not the end of the world.
Has there been anyone that has managed to Wifi Calling + Voice Over LTE working after rooting the phone, what firmware to flash etc?

Just thought I'd add an update.
Updated the phone to Oreo, Wifi calling and Voice Over LTE is now working
I will be keeping this phone.

T-Mobile Mda Vario 4. Woes of a incompetent company

Hey i thought i would share my experience with t mobile so far due to their upgrade blunder::

Due to recent as yet unresolved problems I have had from T-Mobile I feel I have no other choice but write this email. the staff I have spoken to have all being very nice on the phone and made promises that as yet have not being fulfilled and the majority of times nothing has being done.
I was informed by my local T-Mobile store on the 23rd of July that T-mobile had stock of the new ‘MDA Vario IV’ and this had being confirmed by other people (see this link   ((see this link   (by the way my user name on this site is spzero)) then the next day I rang up and asked if I could upgrade to the new Vario IV knowing there was some confusion I questioned the member of staff about this and was informed that they did have some in stock and would be sent one out, after posting of my joy on the same site above I read further that people were being lied to about this phone and sent the ‘MDA Compact IV’(  see further proof here in this same thread) I rang back T-Mobile and was informed I had ordered a ‘MDA Compact IV’ despite my conversation verifying which phone I was after. I spoke to a CSA who was helpful and tried to resolve the problem but the phone had being dispatched and all I could do was refuse the delivery she did also say that “many phone companies do similar things she used to work at Orange and informed me they purposefully placed early, incorrect due dates on there systems and website to entice customers, knowing orders could not be fulfilled and by the time a complaint had being made stock would be in and the customer would have got the phone they wanted.” It seams the same thing is going on here at the end of the call she advised she would call me back before the 4th of august as my next statement would be issued if not sorted out then that I would be charged for a higher Tariff that I had agreed to, in order to be able to get the phone I wanted and also would be charged for the phone.
I waited and received no phone call on the 5th of August I received two text messages from T-Mobile one advising my phone had being returned and one advising my available credit for the rest of the month. I rang up to enquire about this immediately as they was much talk time available than expected and assumed I had being charged at the new higher price tariff, I was informed that this was a mistake and my bill would be adjusted when I received it in the post.
A few days later on the 8th of August my Bill turns up for £106.26. This included a £5.95 charge for delivery which I never agreed to and am quite sure was never told about. I rang T-mobile and got thru to a Stephen the line was disconnected instantly and when I called back got the same agent who listened to my problem and then said I will place you on hold while I look at the account but he didn’t give me chance to agree to this or ask if it was ok. While waiting for Stephen to come back I managed to eat my tea that had being prepared and after 10 minutes I was still on hold. I rang back and spoke to Ashley who’s team number was 799. I was told that a credit would be applied to my bill to make up for their error and that it had all being sorted and asked if they could help further I asked what my bill would be with the credit and was told £99.27 I couldn’t understand this as I had returned the phone and had a text message to confirm safe receipt and the tariff had supposedly being adjusted (My previous tariff was about £35.00 a month and I rarely used any texts or calls above my free allowance. In fact the only charges outside of my price plan was for £0.68 for call charges.) and as I had previously requested a cheaper tariff knew they was no valid reason for my bill to be above £30.00.
My call was transferred to another agent I was told by Ashley she would advise what my call was regarding and give the agent my account details, I was transferred to a CSA called Mark in the Ready 2 team who had no idea what the call was regarding and didn’t have my details so I had to confirm security questions again, after this Mark was able to help I was told to cancel my Direct Debit at my bank as he was not sure if it would take the £106.26 or the new adjusted amount he was processing, I was also told to wait 3 days and my bill would be corrected and could pay the new amount with a debit card over the phone and cancel my account as by this time I was that upset with the service I no longer wanted to deal with T-mobile again.
On the 12th I received a call from T-mobile but as was at work missed it I rang back and was told there was no information on my account as to who had called or what it was in relation to I was also told my current balance still hadn’t being adjusted but as it had not yet being 3 working days I decided to wait. The next day I received a further call and answered this and was asked if I was interested in T-Mobile’s fantastic Mobile Broadband and declined to accept the offer due to all the problems I have had and that I already had a similar service from 3.
When I got home today (The 14th of August) as I was unsure if my account had being sorted I rang T-Mobile to check (this shows on my phone the call was made at 5:15pm) I was advised by the automated service that my balance was still at the £99.27. I then spoke to spoke to mark on team 718 and asked to speak to a team leader, he refused to put me thru and wanted to know what I was calling about. I advised that due to the way my problem had being handled I didn’t want to speak to a CSA again but I wanted to speak to a manager and I knew my legal rights concerning this as I work in a call centre he still refused to transfer me and continued to ask what it was regarding I said if he checked the notes it should indicate what the problem was regarding, he looked at the notes and advised the last two calls showed I had called up and asked for my balance and the second time asked for my Direct Debit to be cancelled but no other notes so he was clueless, as the two previous calls on the system were lengthy complaints and took some time I was surprised at the lack of any further information. He checked back at other notes and advised me that a credit was going to be applied to my account at my next bill date, I advised that this would mean in order for me to pay my account this month and not miss a payment I was having to pay for their error as the only reason I took the new Phone and Tariff was because I was lied to at the outset about the availability of a phone, I don’t mind paying for my call time and text usage but I don’t see why I should pay for T-Mobiles error. He didn’t respond to this and advised they have their processes and no one can credit my account before my next bill date. A asked why I had already being credited a refund that was showing on my account as my bill had reduced and again no real answer was given just that it was a credit for delivery and this was different to the credit of a handset and tariff adjustment. As I used to work for o2 and currently work in a call centre I know how things should work and I know some one can sort this problem out and place a credit on my phone account now, but I was told by Mark that it would not happen as no one was able to do this in the end after going in circles I again asked to speak to a team leader, manager or whoever could help me and was informed I would be called back by a Team leader as none were available, in between one and two hours. Due to these problems I asked for an email address I could complain to and was advised of the one above, then I was informed that this department could credit my account and sort all my problems out but no telephone number was available and all communication had to be by email or post. I advised Mark that I was going out and needed the manager call back ASAP. When I returned home my phone showed just one missed call which was made at 8:12 so again I was given wrong information as this was actually over two and a half hours after my request.
Due to the way I have being treated as a paying customer and the fact that I have repeatedly being lied to over the phone by and that my account has not being updated I find no other alternative but to send this email which shows the underhanded tactics that T-Mobile is using and despite myself and others advising of the lies in regards to stock of the new phone fact the blunders, thru either lack of training or blatant dishonesty, continue (just read the following forum threads in full from xda-developers.com same links as above) It also seams the same pattern of lies happened with the release of the Vario III and Compact III.
I hope some one can sort my statement out as at the moment I am being charged for a mistake that T-Mobile has made due to lies or marketing strategy and this seams to not just be an operator error but a marketing scam in order to hold on to customers and entice new one’s and I think this should not be tolerated by paying customers and I expect my account to be sorted out so I can have the privilege of never having to deal with such a company in the future. Also due to the now many hours of my time in writing this email and speaking to staff I expect compensation or this matter will be taken further

Looks like I'll be getting it with t-mobile- they seem like the only people that have half descent data add ons. will probably be getting it on "Combi 40 + web'n'walk (18 months)" for £40.50 a month + £5 extra for "Mobile Broadband Plus (3GB fair use)"
The way I justify spending £45.50 a month on a phone is that after the 18 months it'll have cost me £819. so if you take away the £500 cost of the phone it works out at £17.72 a month for; 1000 minutes, unlimited txt and 3GB of HSDPA- or does anyone see a flaw in my plan? lol.

3gb limit and restricted to fair use thats the worse deal ever go with o2 they have much better deals and i bet most other networks do too.
Now most networks offer unlimited data, 18 months ago only t-mobile did as far as i know which is why i moved to them from my o2 staff tariff with 50% off, but all the other networks do and i think at a better price. o2 do it as a add on for £5.00 a month or they were doing a deal on any 18 month contract you could choose a free add on so either unlimited data, texts or o2 to landline and o2 to o2 calls.. much better than t-mobile. o2 are releaseing the Raphael as o2 xda diamond pro... just a matter of waiting for release like i would be doing with t-mobile. long live o2..

O2 maybe good with the unlimited data but their call minutes are poor. I have been looking at all of the companies and T-Mobile's minutes are good and it will mean that I will have to change to a 18 month contract. But the only other provider that may come close is 3. But are they going to offer the touch pro?

I don't know I did some digging around and it looks like all the networks now have really bad fair usage apart from t-mobile atm.
O2's "Unlimited Web Bolt On":
A fair usage policy applies and average monthly usage is expected to be below 200MB...
Vodafone's "Mobile Internet and email pack":
Subject to a fair use limit of 500mb per month...
Orange's "Orange World Monthly Access":
The Offer provides 250 MB data browsing...
It looks like everywhere you go it's gona be useless data add ons for £5/7.50 a month :/

Personally I'm on Vodafone who are woeful in the UK for data packages, but I struggle for a signal in my little corner of London with other networks...
update! So my automated response from T-Mobile advised i would be contacted in 3 working days or an email sent.. well they have half an hour to sort out my problem. i did get a call this morning from someone in cust services bu as i havea job was not able to discuss my account she asked when to call back and i said i had a lunch break at 1.30 so at 3.15 or something i got a call again unabe to discuss but she appologised for the delay and arranged to call me back when i had finnished work @ 4.00 so no call im now on a train wit intermitent signal so unlikely to get a call even if she tries and i did advise i would be on a train and th time to call.. well the girl dealing Danielle finnishes soon so once agin seems like they are full lies and empty promises..... this is disgraceful and i am shocked at the disgraceful service or lack of it so far........ will up date if they ever sort any thing out

They did not try to con my into taking the wrong phone and the girl was well aware that it would be out late august at earliest.
Difference was that i was more interested in getting her number and the end of contract stuff.
Eventually i got the HTC branded version from an online shop.

Did you read that on the expansys site by any chance?... old information! I believe O2 have now changed their terms for this bolt on, and don't specify a limit anymore! Read page 2 of this thread and you'll see what I mean. It would certainly make sense for O2 to offer a good data plan so that they can shift their iphone 3G's!
I'm currently on a "solo" sim only contract with T-Mobile, but I'm in the process of transferring to O2 as they're currently doing a great "simplicity" pay monthly package, which at the moment has a special offer £5 off the monthly fee (offer expires end of August). It comes with the unlimited text bolt on, but there's an option before purchase to change it to the unlimited web bolt on, and if you do that you'll end up with 600 mins (any network), 1000 texts, and unlimited web for £20 a month I don't think any network can beat this offer.
Anyway regarding the fair usage policy, if O2 do claim my data usage is too excessive (which I doubt will happen), I'll just go straight back to T-Mobile again. The great thing about sim only deals is that they only have a 30 day contract, so they're easy to get out of. The downside of course is because they're sim only you won't ever get an upgrade deal from your network - you'll have to buy a sim-free handset or a pay as you go handset on your network and chuck away the sim card that it comes with.

I understand what your saying, but without a subsidy you are looking at £500 for the phone, that is equivalent to nearly £30 per month over 18 months. meaining your total monthly is around £50 per month ! where as on T-mob you will probably get the phone + unlimited data +more mins and more texts for the same amount

Hey yeah i got a call yesterday from Danielle while on the train so signal kept dropping couldnt have a real conversation. but
So far my balance has being wipped off and i am due a call back on tuesday to discuss my other problems in the email. i would imagine Danielle will read this as she is monitoring my account so what should i ask for in compensationto give her a heads up here are some ideas a pre-release vario VI??? a htc diamond pro (its the same phone BTW just incase you are reading this but its already released) lots of money??? never to have to speak to t-mobile again ?? Any better answers on a postcard??????
To be honest i dont know if i want to keep my contract even if they do offer me a great deal but i would have my price......................
Got a call today from Danielle again offered me an extra months line rental as credit and said if i stay with them she could offer a line rental discount for the future and a largely reduced handset, but when i said i wanted the vario 4 was told non in stock so i said i wanted to cancel my contract and was told i couldnt as i had just upgraded my phone..... i almost went mad with her she should know by now i didnt upgrade but that the company she works for had lied to me to agree to an upgrade and it was returned its quite funny really, she did say tho that my complaint had gone right to the directors and will be looked into so who knows maybe they will stop the madness,, by no means a great outcome but at least its something..

What does slightly concern me though is that my advertised upgrade price to the Compact IV is £100. What the hell does that mean the Vario IV is going to cost me?
I fear some hardcore haggling may be in order.
It's starting to get the point when I need a new phone badly. My Vario II is dying a slow and very apparent death. If the Vario IV doesn't come soon I might have to give up and jump to the Compact IV. Damn shame that would be - I love a keyboard on my phone. Had one since my O2 XDA IIs. What will I do without it?

Hold out my friend only a couple more weeks T-Mobile are building up hype for the phone so that they can sell more. I think that it will come out in September within the first two weeks they like to release at least one new phone a month and this one will be a big seller until they release the gphone the following month.
T-Mobile really have no business sense. I am due an upgrade and would like the MDA Vario IV / HTC Touch Pro. They can't tell me when the Vario is out and they wont cut me a deal if I get the touch pro off a reseller even though expansys seem to think it's worth their time offering it on my current contract at £2.50 cheaper a month for £110! Rather than give me a similar deal t-mobile'd rather lose a customer it seems ( and make me wait for my new phone ), they're even asking for £100 just to upgrade to the diamond/compact! I don't see the logic :S
I'm tempted to get it off vodaphone business when it's out later this month, if anything just to not stay with t-mobile! (Also although vodaphones coverage sucks they have good contracts and in some places support 6.8mbps 3g).
I feel sorry for anyone else trying to get this phone without paying the £496rrp lol
Just got woken up by a tmobile rep at a store to tell me the reason why the vario 4 isnt out yet is because the device is currently over heating and HTC need to fix this issue before they sell them
I don't know weather this is true or not but it sounds a bit far fetched for a device that's meant to be technically identical to the touch pro.
I dunno maybe there changing hardware specs as well...
Oh and exspansys deals are not fair the contracts are 5-10 quid more expensive per month for the equivalent deals on o2s shop and website.
And untill exspansys changes the details on the site i have to assume the data package does have a 200 mb FUP

best prepaid voice and data in Ukraine

I know there are few ukrainian forum members here.
I will be visiting the Ukraine this summer for a week and would like to be able to use my Touch HD for local voice calls and most importantly to stay connected to the web.
Which provider would you recommend to use in a sense of the low cost and reliable quality of service?
Any advise would be appreciated...

I have always used KyivStar http://www.kyivstar.ua/en/. I am from the US, my wife is from Ukraine. Will be going to Kiev on Wednesday. I have not had any problems using my HTC Kaiser. Auto set ups properly, calls and web access worked just fine. My current sim card has expired. Will pick up a new one in Kiev for a few dollars at many shops. If I bought from walmart.. can I do an exchange for a different one at tmo?

I'm having WiFi issues and need to replace it but all the walmarts that did have the sensation where I bought it are sold out.. can I get a replacement from tmo?

If you bought it at Walmart you can't ever do an in store exchange in a TMO owned store. If your past the return period at walmart, you can do a warranty exchange through Customer Care. It's still new enough you may get a brand new one versus a refurbished one.

Actually you can.. I work at walmart and yes there is a 14 day policy but if you read the fine print it is actually 30 days. Also if you complain enough at any walmart they will work with you. You can return anything at walmart.

Call htc technical support they will send you a box to send your phone and send you a new device . I bought mine from wall mart and sent it back no questions ask with my previous phone. As long as your phone is not physically damaged for a entire year you are covered for a replacement. I had the htc hd2 replaced four times and I didn't pay nothing.

I called htc they said they only repair phones and they don't replace phones.. I talked to them (tech support) for an hour ..after they said that indeed I did need a replacement he transfered me the warranty and repair and they said what I stated above... Hmmm? I'm confused..

I am a department manager at Walmart and you don't have 30 days. On Verizon and att you have up to 30 days to exchange. T-Mobile has always been 15 days no matter what. To the user who's store is doing different you are eating the cost and taking money out of your my share check. Each store will be different but at mine I do not do returns after the time period. I give them the number for manufacturer support.

T-MOBILE SUCKS!!!!! I have spent 3 hours on the phone and in store this evening trying to replace my Sensation that is eating SD cards.....
I went into the local T-Mobile store and was basicly told by the rep there that he couldnt help me at all, due to the fact of me purchasing the phone through Customer care..... I called customer care and after almost an hour (and getting disconected 2X) they agreed to ship a new phone out.... but it wouldnt be here till Tuesday at the earliest.... well this is the reason I went to the store, I am going to be gone for the next 1.5 weeks..... the reps solution was to ship it out and let it sit on the front step for about a week!!! When I complained I was transfered to an "Account specialist" who proceeded to interupt me several times, and say there was 100% nothing she could do.... I asked to be transfered back to the lady who was going to order the phone and she hung up on me!!!!
After calling back for a 3rd time the only thing the rep offered to do was to log my complaint.... no offer to place order phone, no offer to see if there was any way to allow me to pick it up in store etc....
T-mobile will not allow you to even pick up a replacement phone in the store if the orignal was purchased through customer care.... So I would HIGHLY DOUBT that you could exchange the phone at a t-mobile store if you purchased it at Wal-Mart! As long as you bought the phone T-Mobile DOESNT CARE about you, you are already locked into a contract so you dont matter to them!!!
Its also 30 days @ t-mo if you buy the phone off contract. I've gone through five sensations before I found the perfect one. So far so good.

#1 Each location (call center, online, corporate store front) Is alotted a specific portion of devices with traceable by location imei numbers.
#2 Having to return the device to the place you purchased it was included in the contract & receipt IN BOLD LETTERS. Try reading it again.
#3 Walmart purchases their devices directly from HTC or the OEM. NOT FROM US. This is why they can sell them cheaper.
#4 Eating a SD card seems like something you are doing, like buying cheap cards online. That is NOT our fault.
#5 If you are going to be leaving town we can ship replacement devices to where you are, not just your home. So your story makes littls sense.
We do care and i am sorry you had this type of experience. I don't work in customer care but if I did i would have suggested you ship to wherever you are going.

Bought mine yesterday at Walmart. We noticed on the forms it says 14 day, but 30days in California.
Ok, here's my story.
Purchased an upgrade from Vibrant to Sensation through Customer Care. Phone arrived last Wed, so I'm within the 14-day remorse period. This morning the phone died. Door nail dead. Won't turn on at all, no lights with charger plugged in. Went to TMO store, swapped batteries, nothing. Guy says since I ordered through CC I have to call them for a replacement and they would "ship me one over night" (his words).
Over an hour on the phone with CC, transferred to 3 different people, the best they will do is have me ship my dead phone back to them, once they receive it next week I have to call and they will undo/redo my upgrade deal, and ship me a new phone.
CSR told me all TMO stores are privately owned (not actually T-Mobile), so that's why the store wouldn't replace my phone unless I bought it at the store.
This is not what I would describe as great service.

If T-mobile can ship to any address why did no one at tmobile suggest this??? Maybe the phone reps need to be instructed of this.
Patriot memory is not a "cheap" memory, Kingson is not a cheap memory, they are both well known brands with excelent track historys.
If I test the SD card in a PC, and copy data to it, power off the phone, pull the battery, insert the SD, insert the battery, and power on the phone and then I receive a message stating the card is not formatted, click OK to allow the phone to format it, and then receive a message stating the phone can not complete the format.... how is that me doing anything wrong??? On our other phone I didnt even power off the phone when I put in an inexpensive SD card, and it is still working great.

That's been procedure though. Many times on my non-employee line i have to call in just like you do and if i am traveling they always ship to where i am going. Most outsource agents are not always trained the best like that and i am truly sorry for your experience.

[Q] Wanting to switch to the blaze questions

Hello all, and first off, let me say congratulations on getting official CM10 and CWM support!
Here's my story (and before anyone asks, I have searched the forums for an answer, but was unsuccessful with finding my specific questions): I am currently on AT&T (was Alltel before they were bought out) with an HTC Aria and my contract for a grandfathered plan was up long ago. It is time for me to upgrade to something a little more modern and I have settled on the Blaze because of its size (I'd like a GNex, but my hands are too small) and a number of reasons. But the biggest reason is that, as I understand, it has full compatibility with both AT&T and T-mobile's 3g (4g for t-mobile) and 2g/EDGE networks.
I don't really like AT&T as a company and I also really like the monthly 4g plans that t-mobile offers. My problem is that according to t-mobile's prepaid coverage map, I won't have data service for most of the area I travel back and forth in (upper midwest USA). And as much as I dislike AT&T, they have good 3g service almost everywhere I go. So, I'd like to be able to take my current sim card and switch it and a t-mobile sim at will while I test out both service providers.
Therefore, my questions are as follows:
1) Where is the best place to buy a blaze off contract? I'd like to get one on ebay because of the price (~$200 is what I have set aside for a new phone), but there aren't that many there, and even fewer that specifically say they are unlocked - which leads to question 2.
2) Can I unlock any phone that is not on a contract (basically anything I would buy used online)? I spoke with a rep from T-mobile and he seemed to indicate that I could only unlock a phone if I was the original purchaser of it and the plan (and account) to go with it. Therefore, according to him, I would have to make sure the phone I bought was already unlocked, otherwise there would be no chance of unlocking it in the future. I would think (possibly incorrectly) that as long as I have a t-mobile account (I plan on buying and activating the $30 monthly 4g plan as soon as I receive the device to compliment my current ATT service), they shouldn't have a problem with giving me the unlock code because they did not subsidize the phone. Could anyone clear this up?
3) There are a number of sites claiming to sell unlock codes for a myriad of devices. I would consider something like that if there was no other way to unlock a second hand phone, but only if I was sure it would work and the site was legit. Are any of these sites legitimate and have you had experience with any of them?
It would be considerably cheaper and easier to find a used device that isn't unlocked, but like I said, I'm not sure if that would bite me in the rear because there is a strong chance that I will stick with AT&T due to them having service where I travel. 1.) Good luck. Not many people are willing to sell their blaze, especially after the past couple weeks three weeks ago you could have had a lot of takers ebay would be your best bet
2.) Tmobile rep led to you like they're supposed to. anybody can request an unlock code for their phone. Naturally if you're on their plan, they'll verify that you are the owner of the account, but still. That being said, just because you can ask doesn't mean they'll give out. If you had a plan (not prepaid) for a year or two in good standings with no late payments and said you were going out of the country for a couple months and want to use your phone on a foreign gsm network, they'd bee more inclined. As a brand new prepaid customer, good luck. Best of buying it unlocked or getting the unlock code elsewhere.
3.) I've had success and failure here. Most places are what they say, but some won't deliver. Always do research. Google that site or business to see if anybody has complained. And use paypal when you can, you could always claim you didn't get the service you paid for. Same goes with ebay buyer protection.

Like the other reply. If you bought it from t mobile and said you had to go out of county for work. And would appreciate the unlock code to use other GSM networks. While away. They get commission, so if unlock is the deal breaker, they'll prob give it to you. Or if you ask enough pple. Nicely I'm sure someones bound to give it to you.

Have you considered a carrier like StraightTalk? StraightTalk is a MVNO which resells both T-Mobile AND AT&T service. You can specify what kind of SIM you want when you order it online. Their service prices are pretty good, and in theory their network is basically either AT&T or T-Mo depending on which one you pick.
I've seen mixed reviews on their service and whether or not they'd throttle you on excessive service... some great, some bad, so it'd be caveat emptor, but if your usage pattern doesn't change, you'll likely be fine. Either way, it's up to you to do your own research (as someone else mentioned).

I like eBay. Craigslist can be a little scary because the phone may or may not be stolen. T-Mobile and AT&T have already started disabling phones by their IMEI that have been reported stolen by the user or by the insurance. Soon they'll also start sharing that database, so the phone won't work anywhere in North America if that's the case. There are plenty of scams when it comes to craigslist where a "brand new phone" is purchased and then suddenly reported stolen because it was noticed missing from a back room.
This was my biggest fear in buying my S3. On eBay you get to see things like ratings on the sellers so you can find someone trustworthy, like I did Also, make sure to exercise common sense. If something's too good to be true, it very well may be.

You can unlock any phone you buy, legal or otherwise. T-Mobile has never cared if I was the original purchaser or not, and they shouldn't. They'll only care if it's an original T-Mobile phone or not. T-Mobile will give you an unlock code for a phone as long as you've had 90 days of uninterrupted service. On prepaid they want you to have 60 days (I think) with enough of a balance in your account to pay for another month's service. Not sure about the prepaid requirements, but you can look those up online.
Also, if you just wanna test service, I wouldn't do the monthly 4g $30, I'd do a daily. $3/day gets you relatively unlimited access, and you only need a few days worth to make a decision. Plus, you likely wanna switch to one of the better all-you-can-eat plans, and wouldn't want to be stuck for a month with the cheaper plan. It isn't easy to switch until the month is up.

I've had good luck purchasing codes from eBay. Never had them not work. But with everything eBay, make sure you're using someone reputable.

If it's cheaper to find it locked, then just get it locked and buy an unlock code later. If you aren't going to use AT&T service, then you don't need to SIM unlock the phone anyways. The phone will automatically work on t-mobile, unlocked or not. Finding a good carrier is difficult, I know.
If you decide to try straight talk, you could probably go with a T-Mobile SIM that wouldn't require unlocking the phone. If you find the service lacking, you could switch to an AT&T sim and then deal with unlocking the phone.

As for getting an unlocked device, I'll probably have to buy one whether it's locked or not pretty soon, after seeing how much activity has been going on here lately, lol. If it's a T-Mobile phone and you have T-Mobile as your carrier, you can call customer care and tell them you just got service with them and are going overseas and need it unlocked so you can use a foreign sim card in it. Thay usually works well.
If not, ask to speak to a supervisor. When transferred, ask the person if they are a supervisor or just an escalation rep. If they are not a supervisor, ask them if they can help you still.
If they won't, ask to speak to an actual supervisor and try again. If all else fails, you do have a window of time to cancel, so you can always tell them you are thinking of canceling and they will probably transfer you to a retention rep. That one's a gamble since you're bluffing.
If retention won't help, hang up in the middle of a sentence and call back. Chances are, you will get a different call center and you can say you got disconnected and try the process again.
That gives you up to 6 potential reps who can help... and they can. I was customer care for a couple years and then in corporate engineering for several years. They are flexible, you just have to play the game.
Probably not the answer you want, but it's what you will have to do to get it unlocked quickly

I have always stayed away from anything that requires a cable. If they can't get you a code based on your IMEI, I don't bother. I used one of those once and I don't remember if it ever worked or not.
The daily plans don't seem to be well advertised on the site. I found them this time around by going to the "no annual contract plans" and then scrolling down to the bottom for daily and other services. Check it out here. I believe their prepaid coverage map hasn't been updated in ages on the site. Supposedly their prepaid coverage map is about 98-99% like their postpaid one. The main difference between the two is that prepaid doesn't allow you to do conditional call forwarding. This is necessary if you want to use another service for voice mail instead of T-Mobile's crappy voicemail.
When I signed up for Tmo they gave me 30 days to confirm if I wanted the contract. You can get a plan and if you dont like it you can just return it before the first 30 days are up and only pay for the minutes you used. This was a big deal for me as I cam from ATT like you, but needed to knwo how well the Tmo service was. I would suggest getting the unlimited everything for $60 a month. Tmo I must say has pretty good customer service. I have had a few problems with them but all it takes is a little social engineering on the phone (saying sprint/whoever will pay your ETF) and you can get some pretty good stuff
I got $10 knocked off my bill for the duration (18months or so) off my bill for an overcharge I got. I also got two free blazes 2 months before my contract was up for free as well. Plus, when/if they are bought out there is a good chance contracts will be altered/changed allowing you to get out of your contract early

nope. there's not many devices out there that support SDXC yet. As time goes on, it'll gain more popularity, but lets face it, as awesome as it is, the blaze is only a mid range device. I wouldnt trade it for any other phone out there, i love my blaze, but still.

Well, that's mildly disappointing, but it doesn't affect my decision making about the phone. I'll have to somehow get by with only 32GB of storage. Speaking of which, how close is a solution to the camera only being able to save to the paltry internal storage? I do like to take lots of pictures with my phone, so this is obviously something I would hope to find a solution to.

Yeah. In a sense, CM9 has a bunch more features. When CM10 started, they basically started from scratch, and the focus was on project butter and some other things. Then they had to start forward porting their CM9 additions into CM10. There are a bunch of things in CM10 now that weren't there just a week or two ago. I think the camera thing will come, just like other features. It seems like the features are starting to come quicker too.
Keep an eye on the changelog. It lists the changes with each release

I bought a 64gig card off Newegg about 3 months ago and it's been working just fine in this phone. In fact, what I read online indicated that just about every "recent" Android phone had no problems reading them at all.
So hey, ther'es that.
And yeah, having 64gigs is nice, especially since this phone has such small amount of user storage on the phone.

all 64gb microsd are categorized as sdxc, and most of recent android phones do work with them.
I just switched to T-Mobile and got 3 Blaze phones. They should arrive today. I only took them because they were free, and I didn't want to pay for GS3's. I'll be selling one right away after the Note 2 is released. If your still looking for one in a couple weeks, lemme know.

Dude, can I ask a HUGE favor? can you not root them immediately?
I'm trying to help the dude that's been helping me with the CM access. He wants to get a copy of a partition in a virgin state (ie... not rooted or modified at all). He's trying to find a way to reset the flash counter. I'm trying to assemble a stock ROM that will be pre-rooted and won't trigger the counter.
If you can avoid rooting 1 (or better yet, 2 in case more testing necessary), I'd really appreciate it. And it'll help the community in the end

Interesting. So does this mean that the phone is technically "unlocked". This is going to play out a little differently with me because I purposely ordered a T-Mobile version for use on AT&T because of my experience with the Note 4. Now I am a bit worried because I wonder what routine the phone uses and if it locks the bootloader if I put an ATT sim in it first. I guess that is the risk you run when you want to step up to the plate first. I think I will wait before I stick a sim in the phone as I would hate for me to be locked out of it by ATT. Not sure if I am going to root this one or not, wavering on keeping it stock and will for a while until the brains get there hands on it and I get more information on the downsides.

Along these same lines is the question of whether or not the US S7's/S7E's have hardware support for all bands, cdma and gsm, and its just a software block that will be on them? I've seen posted elsewhere the FCC filings that seem to point to one US model of both phones that work on all carriers but nobody seems to know any specifics.
I'm blown away by the fact that all these major Android and Tech blogs go to these conferences and have Samsung tech people right in front of them and they don't ask these kinds of questions. If each phone was capable of working on all bands in the US, holy crap that's huge, and would mean that maybe at some point we would have a chance at an unlocked US phone that wasn't tied to any carriers. Wishful thinking, I know, with Samsung.

I want to buy an unlocked S7 Edge with a Snapdragon 820 to use in South America. I have a friend that can bring me the phone from USA, but there is no way to buy one.
1) Where can I check the bands used on the AT&T vs T-Mobile one to see which one is better for me?
2) I spoke with T-Mobile rep and he said phone must be tied to a plan for 7 days for them to unlock it (this is paying the full $800 for the phone), is it easy to have my friend make an account with T-Mobile to get the phone and cancel it? Will he have credit score issues or something? (Keep in mind I am paying the full amount not subsidized)
3) How soon (if ever) would a Factory Unlocked with Snapdragon 820 appear in Amazon or Best Buy?

T-mobile requires a device to be active for 40 days according to their terms of service. before they will give unlock code. The thread mentioned above compares the two carriers. The problem is that we don't know how ATT is going to modify the phone before sale IF they do at all. In the past ATT has been notorious for locking the bootloader which makes rooting difficult. T-Mobile usually doesn't. According to the above mentioned thread what I saw is that the T-M version is missing one or two bands. However, this might not be the case if all phones are created equal as the phone might have a built in routine that occurs upon sim insertion to install carrier specifics which makes me nervous because who knows if it can be undone. I am glad I have 14 days to return as if this is what Sammy has done, essentially barring me from and unlock then the phone is going back. I am not paying 800 dollars for a phone that funnels me to one direction.

That is weird, I spoke with online support (T-Mobile) and he said after 7 days if paid in full... but still, problem is I know no one that has a T-Mobile account where I can "link" my phone to have it unlocked. So that is the reason I want to know if it would be a problem to have my friend make a T-Mobile account, pay the phone in full to get it unlocked, and cancel T-Mobile. And yeah, from what I read, your statement about AT&T is the reason I want T-Mobile. I can't live with a phone that doesn't have AdAway. You should see my FireFox browser on my computer with Greasemonkey + adblock plus + anti adblock killer, and NoScript

Just spend another 10 dollars to get an unlock code from an app from the playstore. Screw waiting for T-Mobile.
I wonder if it's possible to just flash the appropriate carrier firmware then just activate with sim card.
The reason i ask is I am on verizon and sprint has a buy one get the second 50% off. I have friend on sprint and is pre ordering the s7 edge but asked if I wanted the second line for verizon, I had to turn her down, but that was before I knew about carrier sim lock. Am i completely thinking the wrong way?

I have friend on sprint and is pre ordering the s7 edge but asked if I wanted the second line for verizon, I had to turn her down, but that was before I knew about carrier sim lock. Am i completely thinking the wrong way?

AFAIK you can set it up but once the sim is inserted it will flash carrier firmware and you will have to set up again. You cannot choose which carrier firmware without the appropriate sim card.

On the S6, you could use odin to flash METRO PCS stock tar - it is the same exact firmware as TMOBILE but it didn't include the "UNLOCK AP". TMobile Unlock app made it impossible to unlock the device with an unclock code that you might have purchased from an online service.
So once you flashed the Metro PCS stock rom in Odin, you could buy and use an Unlock Code to unlock the device.

This is it isn't it.? The million dollar question? Does it matter who you buy the phone from? With T-M they have eliminated contracts. You don't owe them a dime if the phone is paid in full, they just require that if they are going to provide you with an unlock code you have to be with them for 40 days. Now, for me, that is 50 for the first month plus taxes etc and a pro-rated 50 for the second. So approximated 85 dollars all in give or take. On day 40 I call and they give me the code to unlock and then I cancel not costing me much more than a lot of unlock services and i get something for it as does T-M . Now, if I stick my ATT sim in FIRST then it becomes ATT carrier locked. I may then have to call ATT who could say that because the phone was not purchased through them they have no obligation to unlock the phone. Catch 22.
This may not be looking good for me as a consumer as it seems to be a loophole for the carriers. This is why. The carriers can say they are under no obligation to unlock a phone for you if you haven't done business with them. For me that is tricky because my phone service is provided to me by work and so I have no rights to claim I have service technically.
This is how it adds up for me:
1. The firmware on the phone at purchase is generic. It only becomes specific when it recognizes a carrier via sim and downloads or loads a routine already on the phone which installs a carrier group and then deletes everything else. ATT may have a say on what the contents of the routine may be and it may lock you out. You then become beholden to the first place of service, not the place of purchase. This is bad because I can tell you that if there is no warning that this will happen T-M might be getting a phone back that says ATT on it.
2. We can get a preimage first and essentially odin that image onto the phone resetting it back to factory before branding. In essence and unlocked phone from the jump. This would be awesome for us tinkerers, not so much for the everyman.
3. The phone is unlocked from the jump. Put whatever sim you want in it and it works. Not likely.
4. We I am over thinking this thing and things will be as they always have, T-M gets there phone loaded with the firmware they want with the safeguards as they see them in place at sim insertion. I have to wait my 40 days and then I get the unlock code and use it with whomever. This seems most likely. There may be other scenarios that I didn't consider.
I guess it's a wait and see proposition but as I have sold my Note 4 and am using a Skyrocket right now I will have to hold myself back from inserting a sim in that bad boy until we see what shakes out. This sounds like it could be the greatest or the worst or the same thing as ever.
The carriers could say that they are like DTV (Direct TV) if you want service it's a two year contract. DTV doesn't care if you have your own equipment or not. The service is tied to registering the card. They give you a new card to go into your equipment, it marries when you call to activate and you are locked in for two years. There is no discount for paying for your own equipment. I could see the carriers going in that direction because they can change their terms and get out from under the FCC says situation. When you activate a sim you agree to a 2 year contract. The phone is unlocked take it where you want but you owe us for two years or an ETF. Most people lock themselves in regardless but not good for me.
My credit card just charged this morning BTW the phone is on it's way I would presume.

While I hope the article that said the S7 would; be automatically locked to the carrier for the Sim card you insert first - I am having a little trouble believing that - not saying it isn't true - and frankly for me, that is the perect situaiton - but it doesn't make sense.
If this were true, a user who purchased a phone with month to month payments - could conceivably insert a sim from a different carrier and use it without having paid in full for the device. Carriers typically won't unlock the phone if you still owe them money - there may be exceptions, but I haven't heard of any.
Just seems odd to me - but then I guess stranger things have happened....
It'd be nice if someone found a way to setup the phone without having carrier bloat installed before inserting the sim.

There is another twist. I called T-M yesterday because my bank stopped payment because of the amount. I approved it but T-M cancelled the order. Just as well because I decided I wanted to switch to black instead of silver. That pushed me back a bit but they said I would still get the Netflix and VR set. and a phone by the 11th and overnight. I asked the agent about this issue and she had no clue. She did however say that because I had purchased the phone outright I could call in on day one and get the unlock code. I will believe if when I see it.
HOWEVER this is the twist which I never thought of. The phone is going to arrive with a SIM IN IT and ALREADY ACTIVATED. So I will have no choice. The only way to not have this happen is to purchase the phone on launch day and not let them put a sim in it. So all of us with pre-orders are going to receive carrier locked phones. Bare that in mind when you pre-order. Fortunately I have 14 days and can walk the phone back in if bad news comes.

US Cellular doesn't offer service in my area for one and two, there is no mention on their website as to the status of the phone being locked or not. The price is right but no year of netflix only VR set. May be an option for some people.

When I have done Pre-orders in the past with TMobile - the SIM was not installed. Now, maybe they will install it this time - but that seems unlikely to me. That means they would have to open thousands of phones - work the sim card away from the business card holder it comes in and and insert in the phone. I don't think that is likely - but like I said, it could happen. Maybe because it does lock to the carrier of the first Sim card inserted, they will take the extra effort to insert sim cards in every pre-order.
But think about it a bit - anytime you buy a phone from a TMOBILE STORE - they have to manually insert the sim card while you wait - and like I said, all previous pre-orders I had to manually install the sim.

I also noticed today that I have pending charges on the card I purchased the S7 on - my best reccollection in the past for every pre-order I have done before is that I didn't see charges show up on my card until shipping was imminent. I don't know for sure that this is the case this time, but it has me hopeful for an early shipping date for pre-orders....Fingers Crossed!!! :laugh:

Checked My UPS and discovered that a UPS Shipping Label has been created. (my credit card shows a charge today for the purchase price of my phone) looks like Shipping for my New S7 is Imminent!

TMobile has very clear policies about unlocking devices - If you have been a customer for more than a year, you can get it unlocked immediately, if you own the phone (paid outright)
If you have been a customer for less than a year, you have to wait 40 days
if you have a Pre-Pay account, you can unlock immediately as long as their is a minimum pre-paid balance of $100 on your account. (but, you can't pre-order an S7 for a Pre-Paid account. They won't sell it to you. You would have to start a different account and then move the phone to the prepaid account by switching sims.)
