Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.0 Oreo FAQ / How to install the latest update for MI A1 - Xiaomi Mi A1 Guides, News, & Discussion

Q: I haven't received the lastest security update, how can I get it?
A: Just wait. Updates may take up to two weeks to reach your smartphone.
Edit: there's now an official way to force install updates:
Download and install the latest version of Google Play Services - it's an official signed version, 12.2.17 (448-186052348) (12217448).
Check for updates - you'll receive an update immidiately.
Q: What's the current build number?
A: As of March 1, 2018, the current build is OPR1.170623.026.V9.5.4.0.ODHMIFA Security patch level: February 1, 2018. Kernel version: 3.18.66-perf-g90e3040 [email protected] #1 Mon Feb 26 11:58:45 WIB 2018
Q: Does Picture in picture mode work?
A: It does but only a few apps currently support it: e.g. VLC (it must(!) be enabled first in VLC settings), Google Chrome (for desktop mode), YouTube (YouTube red subscription is required), Google Maps (only in navigation mode) and WhatsApp (during a video call).
Q: What are the known bugs?
A: Check this topic.
Q: Where can I get a firmware image to flash offline (fastboot ROM)?
A: Check this page for updates.
Q: Are there EIS or Camera2API? Has low light camera performance been improved?
A: Sadly, both are still missing and low light camera performance is still horrible.
Q: How can I improve low light camera performance?
A: Root your phone, enable EIS/Camera2API, install Google Camera with HDR+.
Q: Can I use/install Google Camera with HDR+?
A: No. (Yes, if you're willing to root your phone and enable EIS/Camera2API).
Q: I've heard about Quick Charge in Oreo, is it indeed present?
A: No, this has been verified by many people, some of whom used multimeters.
Q: What about the Google Phone (dialer) and Google Messages apps?
A: They are now both stock straight from Google.
Update: The latest version of Google Phone is incompatible with the MI A1 for unknown reasons but it's Google who made this decision.
Q: How can I hide the X mark for mobile networks?
A: You can disable WiFi or you can install a substratum theme, "Hide X".
Q: My favourite app or game crashes under Oreo.
A: Factory reset your phone, install just this game/app - check if it crashes. If it does, contact its developer. If it doesn't then some other app or your settings have broken the app/game.
Q: How can I disable/hide/remove App is running in background notification?
It's a "feature" of Android 8. There are three methods to get rid of this nuisance.

No. If you install Magisk you will be able to receive and install OTA updates. You'll just have to reinstall Magisk after each update.

There is not fully working TWRP for Oreo as of now.
Magisk can be used by flashing patched boot.img, which already contains Magisk or follow a bit complicated TWRP guide.

You have to restore stock boot before OTA installation, currently that's possible probably only manually.

Oreo changed the encryption scheme, only the latest TWRP version or Oreo system supports it. Nougat system and older TWRP versions will have problems with decryption.

I tried flashing my phone with latest Nougat, both locked and unlocked bootloader. All fine and good, then I updated to Oreo on my partition B. Worked just fine but I cant boot into partition A as the encryption failed.
Not sure what I have to do on my phone.

Has anyone noticed this thing where if we open a slightly darker or dark image, the display boosts up the brightness in the dark areas ? Sort of like the sunlight display on some phones. I tried to record an instance but it doesn't show it clearly.
https://gfycat.com/MemorablePotableKarakul
Is it just me or Has anyone else noticed it ? Is it something that's built-in or can I disable it ?

Ok so my A1 is rooted bootloader unlocked but for some reason the google camera is not working on this and it used to work on 7.1.2 i enabled HAL3 but still no result can anyone help me

What are you trying to do? Once you upgrade to Oreo, you can't safely boot Nougat system. Even if data wouldn't be encrypted, many apps would force close due to changes between these systems. If you want to downgrade, factory reset is probably inevitable.

There are still A/B partitions. Could you describe what are you trying to achieve? I simply don't understand why do you try to boot into Nougat once you have successfully upgraded to Oreo.

I'm not on the beta program and I just got the update tonight.
No change log or any message telling what was the update beside saying it was a security update.
The battery percent indicator has been removed from the accu-settings?
Please, run from it
I got that update on OTA (the 10.0.4 version), and now I have a crippled phone. Low brightness, poor battery life, troubles with WiFi networks above 2.4Ghz (now I miss my 5Ghz WiFi on my modem), and some apps doesn't even work fine. Also, finger scanner got slow, and I have troubles with mobile network. I'm afraid of finding more failures as I use it.
So, if someone is reading this and get the notification, please scrap it and don't install the updates unless you hate your phone.

You need to do two things: change slots and wipe dalvik.
Code:
fastboot set_active a
1. Change slots can be done with fastboot or twrp
2. Wipe dalvik can only be done with twrp that can decrypt your internal storage...
If you are really lucky, changing slots will be enough.
Background: Daisy has two slots. In every slot there are all the partitions, the phone needs to boot - so you have some kind of backup.
Only data is not double. Normally you are on slot a. When you get an update, it will be installed to slot b and after that it changes to b to boot the new partitions.
I changed the slots after updating to 10.0.3.0 and wondered, why my phone was again 10.0.2.0... So, if you are lucky, you can just change slots with fastboot.

Anyone figure out installing Netflix from PlayStore after bootloader unlock?

I would like to install Netflix from the PlayStore and have it update from there like other apps. Is this possible after unlocking the bootloader? In case it isn't clear, I don't want to sideload it so please don't suggest that.

Obvious that is possible , I have Netflix and unlocked bootloader 1 thing don't have nothing to do with the other thing
Have you done anything other than unlock the bootloader? I'm not on a custom ROM or anything, I just mixed some stock firmware so I could get fingerprint sensor in the US. I also installed a kernel that hides bootloader unlock but in the PlayStore Netflix is listed as not compatible with my device.

Don't worry about that, it's working
I installed the Magisk module 'liboemcrypto disabler' on Android Pie to be able to even see Netflix in the Playstore. Now Netflix works and updates from the Playstore as well. But I can't watch content in HD.
On Oreo Netflix worked in HD and HDR mode, but I had to install a DRM fix to achieve that.

Thank you for the suggestion, but janjan's kernel only has a drm fix for Oreo if I understand correctly. I don't believe there is a DRM fix for Pie available (yet). I also don't think anybody is going to spend the time needed to create one, because now that the camera works, most people don't even notice that a DRM fix is necessary.

I actually love Pie. I removed most of my rooted apps because Pie has functionality built in that I really wanted on Oreo. Like choosing dns servers, dns over https, rotation icon in navigation bar, bluetooth device battery percentage and more things I can't remember. Battery life is good.. phone is stable... My only complaints are that Sony took out some of the things that make Pie more usefull. But besides that I'm happy.

This didn't work for me, still the same issue. I also tried flashing janjan's kernel but it didn't make a difference either and the ctsProfile is still false. Does anyone know if the ctsProfile being false would cause this?
Another thing that I think is separate but strange is that I have Magiskv19.0 installed but the Magisk Manager tells me Magisk is not installed and that v18.1 is the latest version.

I think something went wrong flashing your system. I have magisk installed and ctsProfile: true. I would concentrate on that first. Fixing magisk and ctsProfile will probably fix Netflix as well. Good luck!
Ya, so before I flash the tmobile volte/wifi calling zip or flash my kernel .img the ctsProfile is true and I am able to install Netflix from the play store. As soon as I flash one of those though the ctsProfile check turns to false. I need to flash these though or I'm not able to get VoLTE, WiFi Calling, and without hiding the bootloader unlock with the kernel some of the Sony features don't work.

Worth it to upgrade from Android 10 Sept 2020 to Android 11 right now or wait?

Or wait a couple of months for them to tweak it a bit?
I only run Magik and not Xposed, not that it matters!
I'm not rooted, but I've been running R since the first public ßeta.
It's been the smallest update so far in a long time for Android. Very little has changed, compared to previous major version upgrades.
If you can root (and from what I read i think you can with Magisk), make a full backup and try it.
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
I don't really know what you'd be waiting for. I don't think a non-rooted person would notice much in terms of drawbacks. Magisk modules level, there were some issues... but I think most things are getting worked out. Xposed technically works, but more than half of my modules broke in a way that probably won't be fixed for a while. I still feel like I'm at a net-negative in terms of phone features. A11 brought little and broke a lot of my QoL tweaks that used Xposed.
I make no claims about SafetyNet as I use no apps that even check it.
I think A11 has been released formally by google and most of issues have been fixed or addressed.
I used magisk and edxposed. That's not a problem for me(I used Edxposed for fingerface only). Regarding of safetynet issue, it also has solution to make it pass by magisk modules and kernel side.
Until now, I'm happy with A11.
I ended up doing a full wipe and upgrade to Android 11 Oct 2020.
I have Magisk running with the SQL Lite mods for Google Pay and obviously I have root so I'm basically back where I was on Android 10.
I hadn't use Xposed yet and I don't know if I will yet. I was using Viper Audio mod but I don't know if I noticed a major difference, mostly I just stream bluetooth in my SUV.
So far, so good.
I tried it and reverted back to 10 - as mentioned didn't gain much but broke a lot. Even in stock form I can't get videos to load a subtitle file because of storage permissions and what not. A tweaked out install of 10 is faaaar nicer imo so that's what I'm running, probably until a new phone comes out sadly.

can i ask how you upgraded to A11? Im on 10 rooted with magisk and keep hearing mixed messages on upgrading. And is it necessary to wipe? I really don't want to.
A11 is not too bad, but as others have said little things here and there that break. Like for me I listen to SiriusXM app on mobile and for some odd reason it will stop playing all of a sudden and close. It's like the aggressive memory management kills the app for no reason. I even have battery optimization turned off and still does it.
Thinking about moving back to A10 from August, not really much I have to have to stick with latest A11 updates.

Ok so I shouldn't install it via the ota? I keep getting the pop up to update every day.
Does using Magisk to dl / install the OTA, then patch the non-live and newly flashed partition, then finally rebooting not work?
When I was rooted that was always the easiest way.
And based upon the post 2 above this one, Magisk now supports A11 without ẞeta, right?

ROM ❯ PIXEL 5 ❯ OFFICIAL ❯ ProtonAOSP 11

ProtonAOSP
Android 11 ROM
ProtonAOSP is a minimal Android fork (custom ROM) focused on UI/UX and performance, with a touch of privacy.
Usage with my Proton Kernel is recommended to get the most out of your phone. The ROM does not include Proton Kernel, so you will need to flash it yourself. The ROM will still work with other kernels, but you will not get the benefits of Proton Kernel.

Screenshots of the latest version
Installation
This ROM is currently distributed as factory images, similar to stock. Flash it the same way you would flash stock factory images. Don't forget to wipe all data using "fastboot -w" before booting the ROM.
Firmware is included, so there is no specific requirement for which version of the stock ROM you are coming from.
You can also use the quick & easy web installer, which allows you to install and update the ROM from any computer or phone without using the command line. The installer works entirely within your web browser and completes in as little as 4 minutes, depending on the speed of your internet connection. Consider using the web installer instead of installing manually.

I was able to set up my main card on gpay with root and magisk hide (though not using magisk hide props). I've not been out today so haven't tested if it works but given that the card registered okay I would say yes.
A hotfix update has just been released to fix issues with a botched SafetyNet fix that caused most apps using HTTP outside of a browser to break, including Google Translate, SMS/MMS, and many others. I've figured out a new way to fix SafetyNet that doesn't come with those pitfalls, so SafetyNet is still passing out-of-the-box and apps will no longer break.
Re-download v11.2.0 from GitHub for the fixes. I've decided to re-upload it rather than bumping the version because the previous SafetyNet fix was very broken.

Tethering works, and I can see log messages about successful hardware acceleration setup.
VoLTE should work with all carriers supported on stock — it's Wi-Fi calling that's finnicky, and I converted the carrier configs from stock for use in AOSP — but your mileage may vary. It works for me on a T-Mobile US MVNO, as does Wi-Fi calling.

In short:
Install Magisk Manager Canary from GitHub
Extract the boot.img file from the image-...zip file inside the ROM's factory images ZIP
Push it to the phone
Patch it with Magisk Manager
Pull the file to your computer
Reboot to bootloader
fastrboot flash boot magisk_patched.img

Thank you very much for the first rom for the p5.
I have 2 questions about this.
At first, exists their some screenshots which shows the ui or the difference to the stock p5 ui ?
The second question is more important for me.
Can I dirty flash the rom on my p5, so I can use the data which is currently installed. Or must I wipe the phone and start from scratch?
Best regards,

You must wipe if you are coming from another ROM. Future updates to this ROM will not require subsequent wipes.
Screenshots are available on the Telegram channel, here is a public link that doesn't require login: https://t.me/proton_p5_builds/6
Just to clarify if anyone is confused: this is an Android 11 ROM, not Android 10. XDA DevDB has no option for 11 so I had to put 10. I've just edited the DevDB info out of the post now and added 11 to the header so there should be no more confusion.

Question Xiaomi 12 cupid no OTA update

Hi,
My Xiaomi 12 still hasn't gotten an new update and is stuck on MIUI 13.0.27.0( SLCEUXM) with security patch of oktober 2022.
I would like to get to the latest miui 14 and would like to know what is the best way to manually update this safely with a original ROM?
Should I do this incrementally start at MIUI 13.2.6.0 and then go to the next till I get to the latest or can I just update to the latest MIUI 14 directly?
Tnx
Gradually is the safest method.
Skipped the Beta stables.

Thank you for the quick response.
I downloaded the MIUI downloader app are those ROMS good to?
I need to choose for a recovery ROM and then I can install it with the updater app right? So starting with version MIUI 13.2.6.0 would be the safest?
Downloaded from the site I told you, if the downloaded choice 'incremental update in yellow'.
Then go to OTA, 3 points at the top right, install update (if this does not appear, tap the Miui logo several times).
If it works, try OTA first.

You mean this one right?
It says it's only around 80mb is that correct?
When it's for a update from Android 12 to Android 13.
Error on my part, take the full rom.
it's the first A13 before yours.
If that doesn't work, download the incremental update of the current rom and then check if an update is offered.

So I tried to install the stable recovery ROM MIUI 13.2.6.0.TLCEUXM but it didn't work I keep getting this message "can't verify update can't flash this stable rom"
Then I tried a newer version recovery ROM MIUI 14.0.5.0.TLCEUXM but same message.
Also tried your suggestion to use the incremental update of the current ROM V13.0.27.0 but then I got the message "can't verify update can't downgrade ROM version"
Do you have any other ideas on how to fix this problem?
Try to change region (Belgium/Usa/change continent/country) and restart afterwards.
Then turn on WiFi and check for updates.

or unlock the bootloader and you can install any stock or custom rom.

Tried changing the continent/country and turn wifi back on after restart but no updates were found.
I really didn't want to try messing with the bootloader because of the warranty. I also read somewhere Google play services and bank apps not working when its unlocked.
Anything more I could try without unlocking?

Nope, you can re-lock the bootloader after installing the stock rom.
No need with a Xiaomi Eu rom (certified play store, everything works).

Only thing I haven't tried, is using the incremental update of that version V13.2.6.0 because it was only 80 mb. If I try this update and it works will it then download the ROM information on it's own or something?

Nope,only solution unlock the bootloader.
Just to be sure I downloaded the 2 latest versions that I hadn't tried yet.
The recovery ROM of version MIUI 14.0.7.0.TLCEUXM and 14.0.8.0.TLCEUXM.
And they both seem to work
Since I'm still on Android 12 now and missed so many updates in-between these 2 latest versions. Would it be safe to install one of these?
Doesn't matter, it will work or not.
Note that if you have a bootloop afterwards, with the bootloader locked you will have to pay to recover your phone (this sometimes happens).

So it's not safe to just install one of these recovery versions manually with the updater?

Never at 100% with forcing.
EDIT:moreover, even regular updates via OTA can lead to a bootloop.

So it's just a risk of updating no matter what version I use. I never had a boot loop before.

Zero risk does not exist and this risk increases when you force the update by skipping versions.

Oke, yeah I wanted to do it step by step till I got to the latest miui 14 and still don't get why the older versions don't work.
The only older version I could find that also worked was version V13.0.33.0.SLCEUXM but can't find much about that update.
