Verizon pixel 2 locked bootloader stuck on bootloader screen, can't get into recovery - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
My phone is bricked now and there is no solution yet, I think but it won't hurt me to ask
With the latest news, I could unlock the bootloader of my Verizon pixel 2 successfully (fastboot flashing lock_critical) then I flashed a custom kernel to it. Somehow it won't boot. I stupidly relocked the bootloader while the custom kernel was still on it.
I tried to unlock the bootloader again using the command fastboot flashing lock_critical but it never worked again.
Now my phone is stucked on the bootloader screen, when I select recovery mode, it would take me back to the bootloader screen.
I can't use flash-all because the bootloader is locked. adb sideload won't work for me because I can't get into recovery mode.
Please let me know if you have any suggestion. I really appreciate it.
Otherwise, I will keep it for a while and pray there will be a solution to unlock the bootloader again.
Thanks everyone and happy new year.

I contacted Google asking for a warranty. They asked me to provide the receipt of purchase which I don't have. I bought the phone on Craigslist. So no warranty. Google sucks. Apple never asks for a receipt

Can't do anything but sideload with a locked bootloader. But he can't get to recovery so no sideload for him either.

Tell them that it was a gift and ask for warranty again (be polite) !
How come your stock recovery is not working ? You said you flashed kernel only. Not even TWRP .... You need to hold power and then press volume up and immediately release both of them ...

You said you typed flashing unlock critical. You should not even using that. You should have used flashing unlock. It says on Google page specifically do not use that command unless you have the pixel 2 xl. My guess you did not fully unlock the bootloader. For the pixel 2 XL you have to type into commands flashing unlock critical in flashing unlock for the regular pixel 2 it's only flashing unlock.
Try typing flashing unlock only and see what happens if not you may have bricked your phone

You are correct that Google says specifically not to do that, which is why I did it. Previously on It's Always Sunny, that brought up a menu asking if you want to unlock. It seems OP messed up Kernel somehow.

Chinese Fastboot Mode?

Hey everyone!
So, I flashed dalvik and bionic optimizations for the OnePlus One that I found over on the Nexus 5. When I booted back up into Android, all of my apps were missing, and everything kept on crashing. So, I booted into Fastboot Mode, but instead of the Cid logo which is usually presented, this message came up:
己进人fastboot...
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
The English translation is roughly "You have entered fastboot...". Everything still worked fine. I flashed my system partition back, and everything was okay. But, strangely, the Chinese fastboot message still appears instead of Cid. I kinda want Cid back...does anyone have any solutions? And yes, my phone is the international model.
i also have the same screen for fastboot. to make it worst i dont have root access but have a chinese version of cwm on the device. donno what to do.

Well you can also try flashing the logo.bin partition from the CM11S image cyngn has at https://cyngn.com/products/oneplusone/, but if your bootloader is already in chinese, you might just want to flash the device back to full stock using the fastboot image.

Yeah, it will fully revert your device to the factory image. Once you are done, if you have the 64gb model, make sure to flash the userdata_64gb.img manually after otherwise your system will only show as 16gb.

[Q] Flash Stock and Unroot without USB possible? [SOLVED]

Hello Nexus friends!
Hope someone can help me:
Is there a way to flash my nexus 5 back to stock and unroot without USB?
I think my USB port is dead, it doesnt load and I m not able to connect it with any computer. I wiped it but nothing changed.
History:
I flashed and rooted my phone with Nexus Root Toolkit from stock (4.4.2 (KOT49H) i think) now after OTA updates its runnig 4.4.4 (KTU84P).
plz help!
regards
Mike
You could flash a stock recovery flashable ROM....would need root for that obviously.
As far as flashing stock recovery....not sure about that one. Maybe flashify can help? Never used it myself. You need a flashable stock recovery tho.
Also, the boot loader will be unlocked still, so that's kind of a dead giveaway. Nothing you can do about that without connecting to a computer for fastboot.
Need to know the full situation.
If you've lost root you NEED a custom recovery. If you have stock recovery, you NEED root.
OTA removes root and custom recovery.
Please give situation report.

I can walk you through it but I need to know for definite your current situation.
I need you to have either root, or a custom recovery.
To check custom recovery, hold vol down + power to boot to bootloader. Then use Volume up / down to navigate to "recovery" and press power to select. I want to see the recovery screen. Usually OTA will remove root and custom recovery.
Also, use root checker to check if you have root - I expect you will not have it.
First install SuperSU

Then install root checker

Google will not reject warranty of hardware failure due to unlocked bootloader. LG might. If you bought it from google, it usuall goes to google, but not sure if changign country changes things. Best to ask google.
Only chance to lock bootloader is to get root by using towelroot. It may or may not work.
https://towelroot.com/tr.apk
Run the app. It is supposed to reboot but sometimes it does not. If it does not, reboot yourself. Then ipen SuperSU and check if it has root.
If it does have root, install bootunlocker https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker&hl=en - and reset tamper flag and lock bootloader. Then unroot using SuperSU.
If towelroot doesnt give you root, you cannot lock bootloader

I can look into it, but any features I add to the toolkit would have to be compatible with all of the devices I support, which is over 90 now. It may not work with every device correctly.

Can confirm, unlocked using htcdev.com and flashed TWRP the old fashioned way (fastboot flash recovery twrp.img) and received this message:

OKAY [ 0.945s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: cannot flash this partition in s-on state)

So it looks like we might need s-off first? That would suck.

Actually I misspoke. In bootloader mode it says that, but in download mode, the one with the black background instead of the white background, it works like a charm! That's a relief.
What works like a charm? It's not letting me install recovery because s is on. How did you get past that?

Temp Root Question

Sorry if this question does not belong here, I'm a noob. A few days ago I was trying some things with the sunshine free apk and after a few minutes I got a message that said "congratulations now you have temp root", then I installed TWRP through google play, rebooted into recovery and it worked. At that time I did not try to install a Custom Rom through this method because I wasn't sure about it, my question is Can I install a custom rom doing with this method? (like the google play edition sensified rom)

I'm not really sure what to tell you. If you managed to install TWRP without getting S-Off and an unlocked bootloader (never heard of this) I would think you could flash a rom. However, I don't know if it would work for you or not. If the rom comes with a boot.img file, it would almost certainly fail to flash that part of the rom. You would need an unlocked bootloader for that to work. If the system part of the rom did flash, it might be nothing but headaches if it relied on the boot.img. I'm not even sure if the system would flash without an unlocked bootloader. My guess is probably but I think you might be in for a world of headaches if you do it. I would recommend just running sunshine and paying the piper . Maybe somebody else more knowledgeable than me can answer and tell you for sure. I'd tread lightly on this one if I were you. I just don't know for sure. All I know is that boot.img isn't going to succeed.

Thank you, then I'll have to buy the full version of app

Sorry if this question does not belong here, I'm a noob. A few days ago I was trying some things with the sunshine free apk and after a few minutes I got a message that said "congratulations now you have temp root", then I installed TWRP through google play, rebooted into recovery and it worked. At that time I did not try to install a Custom Rom through this method because I wasn't sure about it, my question is Can I install a custom rom doing with this method? (like the google play edition sensified rom)

I suspect you haven't accomplished as much as it sounds. I don't believe you can flash a custom recovery with s-on and a locked bootloader. When you ran sunshine, did you go all the way and pay for it or did you stop after gaining temp root? Temp root may allow something like the TWRP app (different from the actual TWRP recovery) to think it's done it's thing without the flash actually completing. When you say "it worked" do you mean you booted all the way into TWRP recovery?

Yep, I installed the app from google play and then it asked me if I wanted to reboot into recovery so I did it. I was able to use TWRP but I didn't try anything because I wasn't sure.

But you're sure that you still have s-on and a locked bootloader? What happens if you turn off the phone and then enter the bootloader (volume up + power) and enter recovery from there? Does it take you to TWRP or stock recovery.

Ok, but if you enter recovery from hboot as in your picture do you actually go into twrp? I wonder if either the TWRP app (with temp root) was somehow able to boot twrp instead of flashing it to the recovery partition and booting to recovery or perhaps some previous owner flashed a spoofed hboot and you actually do have an unlocked bootloader but don't know it. Did you buy the phone new with this being the first time you've tinkered with it?

I went to the States a month ago and I bought it pre-owned in Gamestop, so maybe as you said it is modified. And answering about the TWRP I tried to boot into recovery yesterday but I had no success (I got to the default android recovery).
Summing up I'll just buy the full version of the sunshine app and do this thing in the proper way, thank you for your help and time.

Why not verify first you are truly s-on with a fastboot getvar all
That way we can make sure someone didn't flash a faux hboot.

Sorry for the delay. I checked it with fastboot getvar all and it is stock, there's nothing wrong with it. S-ON and locked bootloader.

Thanks, I'm trying to get the stock partitions for an LG Phoenix 2 but the phone can only get temporary root with Kingroot. The Kingroot also gives random reboots.

Get in a root shell, do this
Code:
cd /dev/block/platform/
ls
Whatever ls gives you, run
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/platform/"whatever it gave you"/by-name/recovery of=/recovery.img

Nope, had to delete LAF, and then the fastboot mode was neutered, no command was recognized. I bricked my device flashing an aboot from another variant of the phone.

For mine, it said it was in Download mode after deleting LAF, but I could run fastboot commands. Just run fastboot devices whenever it says download mode and see what happens

awesome thank you for your help ? I've been working at this phone for 6-7 months and we are finally starting to get info on how to unlock and root but this phone has been a difficult one ? so basically download mode is masking fastboot but fastboot commands can be used in download mode, was this after or before you bricked? I just don't want to brick mine, i don't have a dev phone yet for the tribute hd except my daily driver

Before, I flashed my bootloader with a copy of one from a different variant of it. You should be fine. When you're in fastboot try running fastboot oem unlock and fastboot flashing unlock and see what you get.

I am at a brick wall again adb devices works for me and returns my authorized devices listed but when i put my phone into download mode and enter fastboot devices i get a blank output and if i enter either unlock commands it says (waiting for devices) forever whether i unplug it or not, no response. I BELIEVE i have the right device drivers and i have the latest fastboot/adb binaries and system wide adb and fastboot drivers installed. I'm pretty sure i still have to nuke laf. I've been unsuccessful with every other method
