Will an Xperia XZ screen work in the XZs? [Solved] - Sony Xperia XZs Questions & Answers

So I got a pretty sweet deal on an XZs for $35 with a broken screen, it was supposed to be an XZ but whatever I got a free upgrade, so I was going to get an XZ screen but now that I found out that it's an XZs I noticed the screens are a little harder to find, much less at a decent price, however it appears as if it uses the same screen in both phones and the the exact same body, so in theory I could just get an XZ screen right?
Can anyone on here confirm that? Oh and I did ask Sony support about fixing it/parts and they said they only cover manufacturer defects and straight up told me to go find a third-party, utterly useless...

Minor update, I found an ebay seller that listed the screen for both phones and I asked him for a confirmation on that, which he said yes, thus I decided to go ahead and buy the screen, so presumably it does in fact use the same screen on both phones, I'll try to remember and post an update next week on whether or not the screen works.

Alright well great news for you and anyone looking for replacement screens, I'm not guaranteeing anything but the XZ and XZs do appear to share the same screen, it totally works! (Pics below)
One thing to note, my screen didn't come with any dust filters and it's probably a good idea to replace the adhesive for the earpiece when transferring it over, but I didn't have either of those so I just took em off the broken screen.
Edit: Update, I just got some adhesive for my phone so the screen will stay securely in place, I was previously using electrical tape as a temporary solution which does alright but I can't recommend doing it, as it leaves sticky residue behind which takes a little more effort than I'd like in order to remove it, if anyone needs the adhesive and doesn't mind waiting 2-4 weeks, I can recommend this seller KevinTwoPlusOne Store because you can order 3 pcs for $1 which I highly recommend doing since if like me, this isn't something you do often then there's a good chance you'll screw up on your first try making extras mandatory, also I'd like to note that the adhesive isn't as strong as OEM, the screen can be pealed off again without heat, now that doesn't necessarily mean it's less effective at keeping water out but I'm obviously very hesitant to test out whether my new phone is water-resistant or not, especially with the reused adhesive around the speaker.
Edit2: Alright well 4 months later I have another update, the adhesive I recommended a while back is starting to give, after normal use and a few mild drops I can see a small amount of light from the backlight from under the left corner, I admit I may have messed up applying it in some way, but I might suggest paying a little more than $1 for something better or just use some double sided tape.
Edit3: Ok so I made the dumb decision to buy the same adhesive a second time and it appears that my issue had more to do with my phone specifically, as I applied adhesive again and it started to peel up in the same corner within just a few days so I took it off and this time I noticed that my screen doesn't quite sit flush except in one small spot, so possibly even a bad design for the frame? I dunno, it doesn't appear to be bent or anything but I applied the adhesive for a third time and it looks like it should be flush and should hold pretty well now, so if you want to save a few bucks it's not a bad option, it shouldn't be any worse than double sided tape however, I'm going to have to standby my previous statement and recommend just paying for something stronger, it'll just be less of a hassle later on AND make sure you place your screen into the frame a few times to make sure it sits flush, that said definitely still get some cheap stuff so you can practice it a few times before you try with something stronger. (just found out that this is actually a fairly common problem with xperia phones in particular the Z3 compact where the third-party adhesives don't hold, you need something on the level of OEM quality and not OEM compliant.)
Edit4: Alright this should be my final edit and I've come to the conclusion that none of the currently available adhesive stickers are strong enough to permanently hold the screen to the frame, if a HMG sticker comes along then maybe, but until then I'm going to recommend using B7000 instead, it's cheap and the main thing most people are recommending to use, I've also heard some good things about loctite vinyl adhesive but it'll cost a little more per oz/ml so something to consider if you run a repair shop.

It's a good idea to replace a new screen with cheaper cost. but xz
has no light blue color. black, white or dark blue maybe ugly.

That is one personal preference and two depends on the base color it came with, I for one think the dark blue looks nicer and looks beautiful on my black phone, now yes you could argue that it might hurt the resale value, but honestly xperia devices have pretty bad resale value as it is and as long as you're honest and provide pics I don't think many would be buyers will care too much.

thanks for your review

Cuts my hand?

Hi all,
I got my Nexus one and ever since I am bugged with this "defect"?. I checked with one of my friends and his N1 got this defect too. Do you all have it?
The defect is that; Right above the volume control buttons, the back cover doesn't fit. Part of the front casing (being hard and all) cuts my fingers when i try to hold this thing in my right hand. And that's my hand I use for reading stuff..
My questions are:
- do you have the same problem?
- if not, how can I order a back cover that fits perfectly? since I am really really annoyed with this?
- if there's another way of fixing this issue, what would that be?
best,
kirpi
I am from Turkey and one of my friends brought this n1 to me by the way, so rma is not an option [and I actually unlocked the bootloader already anyways]
mine does not have this defect
http://www.htc.com/www/support/nexusone/
they might still get you a replacement part for a hardware defect that cut you.. id call or email them and ask
Mine is fine.
My first Nexus One did not have this defect. My replacement does.
Call HTC and have them send you a replacement battery cover. If the replacement doesn't fit, have them send you a new phone.
Yes, I noticed it too and looked all over the web to see if it was normal. Seeing as others have noticed it to and some have even had one that fits properly and one that doesn't I think I'll try to call HTC and have them send a free cover. Has anyone tried this and been successful?
well, apparently it is not normal. so I asked htc how can i replace the cover.
i actually wait for any vendor /chinese etc/ to produce spare parts so that i can buy one in case htc cannot provide the cover to turkey
The back cover is off for me as well, however, I would suggest manual labor to toughen up your hands.

Did you speak to someone at HTC? Did they offer to send a replacement cover? The thing is I can't tell if it's the cover that is off or if the phone part is off.
The back case is a little off. And from all the pictures of nexus one... it seems to be the case for everyone. However, nothing that will cut finger. I rubbed my finger on it for 2-3 minutes..nothing.
Everyone else.. look closely.. the metal part between volume and power is slightly visible as compared to smooth side of left. It is very slight and looks like a design change HTC made for placing volume and power key.
Called HTC and they agreed to send out a replacement battery cover so we'll see if that changes anything.
My first phone did not have this. My second did. I am now on my third and it has the slightest of a lip. You couldn't even notice it unless it was up to your eye. However my issue is with the screen. The right side of the screen is not flush with the phone, and there is a jagged lip that is horrid. I've been waiting for them to close my current ticket ( It's been 2 weeks, and have my money back in my back, but it still says testing phone ( yes , it was unlocked =) )). My old phone had massive dust under the screen.
Anyone else have this screen to phone edge problem? I almost regret selling my iPhone as the quality control seemed better. But I love my openess
I have no edge issues on the back cover...

yeah if that cut him WOW!!! hahahaha
What kind of moisturizer do you use? Your hands must be silky smooth! Like buttah!
I just noticed this defect today! I only noticed it after dropping it though (while sitting on the toilet it fell out of my pocket) so no damage of course but didn't notice before hand
well i am not that silky smooth but my skin may be a little too sensitive, i admit (allergetic person here)
However, the off part is not that much small in my casing.
Also it might be related to how I handle the phone. I use my right hand to hold it and my index finger and middle finger hovers around that problematic edge all the time while using it. I changed my handling (since i cannot change jobs for a manual labor that easily )
anyways, HTC has agreed to send me a back cover without even asking too many questions (obviously to a friend of mine in america) It made me think that, this is a well known issue. If that defect is with the chassis than I'll just wait for HTC desire sell mine after that
I received my replacement battery cover today and unfortunately it also does not fit. I called HTC and they are escalating the issue to the accessories department to have them investigate the battery covers not fitting the recently built Nexus Ones.
cekle
it is saddening to hear that.. the rma life cycle is like hell for me (since i reside in turkey) well, please let us know if ever a fitting cover is sent to you and i will re apply.
I think all the N1s have this defect. Mine is about a quarter of a millimeter off just above the battery. It is actually common in electronics for covers to not fit perfectly.
Do I really care about something being .25 mm off? No.
The better question is, should that be enough to cut your hand or even scratch it?
In any manufactoring there is a "tolarence" that defects have to be under in order to be shipped out. In reality, everything has a defect.
The amount this cover is off is certiantly within most manufactoring tolarences. The N1 isn't going on a space shuttle so there is no need to have a tolarence of .001 mm.
There, you learned somethhing amount engineering and manufactoring.
In all honesty, do I think the tolarence for the cover was a big too high? Yes, but you are building something that costs $175 to make and then turning around and selling it $179 already, some corners must be cut.

Cracked Screen - Replacement part?

Well, I knew the time would come, I shouldn't be so picky on cases. I had my phone in my lap, hopped out of the car and heard my phone drop from my lap. Totally forgot it was there. One corner impact and it cracked my screen, which is disappointing because I drop my iPhone all the time and nothing happens to it. But, at least it's not the whole screen that's shattered, might even be a waste to replace it. The screen is responsive still.
With that said, anyone know where I can get a replacement screen or should I have a "professional" do it?
I'm looking at this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-Google-N...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item233373ec1c
That way there's no damage to the frame.
well yeah i want to know that too and how much it cost me to replace the screen

Ebay link looks OK. I guess you can replace screen yourself, if you have "straight" hands. Nexus 5 Teardown should helps you.
BTW, more Parts for Nexus 5.
Well, if you are going to try this one yourself, it's one of the "easier" ones. As long as you get the LCD assembly and frame that is already put together. On eBay, there are some vendors selling the the assembly + frame for $135. No really crazy tools are needed. Shouldn't be anything too catastrophic happen since you are changing the whole front of the phone. If you were trying to separate the top glass, I'd definitely advise against if you aren't a pro. If you absolutely don't feel comfortable with doing it and can be without the phone for a few days, then feel free to PM me, and we can discuss other options.
If you have steady hands, enough patience and some previous experience in disassembling phones (youtube could help a lot), it shouldn't turn out to be quite a big challenge.
I would advise though in some attention taking off the rear cover (it's not difficult, but if you apply too much pressure you might end up bending or breaking it). Same goes with the battery, which is attached to the back of the screen with some adhesive. Use a plastic tool for this, and try to peel it off with a strong and steady hand. Once you do that, it's only a few screws.
I think LG would fix it for $150 so $135 to fix it yourself eh. Unless you want the accomplishment, but I have never ventured into replacing a cracked screen.
Just got off the phone with LG, they said they can't price over the phone, they have to have a tech see the phone and they'll call with a quote. So, 2 weeks without a phone just to get a quote and maybe repaired if I want to spend that kind of money.
I am 80% positive that I have viewed a few post of them charging $150 for screen replacement. You aught to check in the thread "who dropped it" the answer might be there. Its in general. Hard to find with xda app.

Well, turns out once the screen is cracked it cracks easier now. As of now, the phone starts clicking on random things when the screen is touched.
I'm debating to either buy a new one and sell this one, should come out to the same price as buying a replacement screen once the cracked phone is sold.
What would you guys suggest? I can't send it in to LG as I need my phone and replacement screen + front housing is $200 to replace myself or $220 to replace by a professional.
I'm looking at this: http://www.etradesupply.com/lg-nexus-5-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly-with-frame.html
It seems to come with majority of everything and I just need to transfer over the antenna wires, motherboard and battery.

Can't you try the below? Quite easy to dis-assemble the phone, steady hands and proper screw driver + torx driver, use a hairdryer to warm up the glue connecting the battery + LCD to the digitizer
Sorry can't post external links to XDA due to post counter search Ebay for "Frame-LCD-Display-Touch-Digitizer-Screen-for-LG-Google-Nexus-5-D820-D821" results are between $108-$120 ...

Replacement screen&frame

Hey,
I'm in need of screen replacement, and I see they come together with a frame (which is great, since mine is slightly scratched, too).
Anyways, at the price of about 100€, should I expect them to be original? Anyone replaced theirs with non-OEM, is difference apparent?
My biggest concern would be battery life, since the screen is what makes this phone's battery last so long (very low on energy consumption, or so I heard).
I ordered one of those screens with frame off eBay for my t MO d6616 z3. It's not oem, and the install is a pain. It requires you to remove all the internals off your old phone. The heat pipe that's built in is not of the same quality of your original. I noticed my old headpipes felt more metallic, and slight thicker compared to the new one. My phone also gets much hotter. My phone hasn't caught on fire surprisingly.
The new frame doesn't come with the copper tape that's in the old frame so, you are gonna have to carefully remove them off your old one.
So, yeah my screen didn't come sealed well onto the frame. I end up squishing it everytime it pops out. Also, the screen is a finger print magnetic, and it's probably not using glass.
Final words, my camera button stopped working, and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. My WiFi has gotten worse because I no longer get Internet upstairs. Probably due to shoddy install job I did.
Some helpful tips if you are going to follow through with this. Get a heat gun. I was able to reuse the back without having to use new adhesive which I had ordered anyways. And lastly say goodbye to waterproofing when you have to switch internals to a new frame. I heard you can use some type of glue meant for this. I think the problem would lie in resealing the USB port, audio jack and speakers.
Hope this helps
---------- Post added at 03:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:37 AM ----------
And for your question on battery life, I haven't noticed any significant amounts of battery drain.
Some additions: my screen bleeds light on the edge when it starts to bulge out. That's how I know I need to press the screen in.
Also it might be the way I put the speaker(top) back in but it vibrates and rattles the sound now. At high volume it's distorted.
I went from a near perfect phone to being grateful that it mostly works.
My friend bought one, asked a technician to put on the new screen.
Quality aint the same, the frame is not resting well to the side so you can see light bleeding on the sides all the time.
I think Sony uses a special kind of adhesive for the frame.
It now looks ugly as hell I highly advice against it. Might as well sell it for parts and buy a new one.

Restore my Nexus 5

I'm wanting to give my old Nexus 5 a facelift. I love the old phone and not parting with it. Problem is.. The frame is cracked by the sim card tray. Do I have e to replace the screen or just the midframe?
Simplest way to deal with the issue would be a nice case. I use a spigen hybrid case to hide scratches on the back and minor frame cracks.
Frame can be replaced easily...but you obviously need to take it apart for it..
Found a frame for 14 bucks.. but it would be less Hassel to get the frame/LCD together wouldn't it?
I just don't want to mess anything up taking the LCD off the frame
An original frame and LCD are very expensive and the third party LCD and frame are definitely not as good as the original but they are much cheaper. I have replaced quite a few LCD screens using replacements from Aliexpress. The original screens are brighter and the colour looks richer. People for whom I replaced the screen can't really tell the difference until I hold a working party screen screen next to my phone which has an original screen.
A few months ago I spent a lot of time on eBay looking for a used N5. A large number of them had the SIM tray crack, and all of them without exception said it was purely cosmetic and had no effect at all on the phone's performance.
If you really love your N5 the very last thing you want to do is take it apart. Have a browse across the XDA forums to see how many people replaced just the battery and ended up with a dead device. And what you're talking about is no doubt riskier than a simple battery replacement.
Me, I'd just live with it, or if you really can't stand the sight of the crack then use a case as audit13 suggests.

Question Screen De-Lamination: That was Fast!

My Flip 3 is about nine months old. Enclosed are two pictures, one from midnight on July 4, the second from 11:30 the next morning (noon-ish, July 4). The device was left open overnight because I was backing up my files to a USB stick in preparation for Samsung's fix of the screen. You can see the de-lamination of the factory-installed screen protector spread overnight from one-half the screen, across then entire fold-area, to encompass the entire screen, in less than 12 hours. There was no damage to the screen before the de-lamination started two days ago (July 2). The first indication was a tiny spontaneous de-lamination at the far right edge where the screen folds.
The phone is lovingly cared for, never dropped, no tears, no scratches on the protective film, no water exposure, battery-saver (85%) on, slow-chaage always on, etc... The phone is otherwise in "like new" condition. Samsung support recommends a local "UBreakIFix" store for the repair. I'll let you guys know how the repair goes.
So the "cost" for using this phone, so far, is $100 a month. $900 divided by 9 months, before it's now so fragile it can't be safely used. Wow.
That sucks.
Another dropped ball from Samsung.
This was predictable. Samsung exceeded the limits of the plastics and adhesive system. It is a high risk technical venture and they likely will never have the durability most would like.
As long as the screen underneath isn't cracked/loose, it should be fixable by removing the plastic screen protector and applying your own

Yeah, the phone is in perfect condition, except for the protected coming off. If it were out of warranty I'd probablly try to fix it myself.
Interestingly, the local Samsung-authorized repair sites near me are taking one look at the phone and saying (even before they look at it), "No, we don't fix those. Check one of the other repair sites.... ." They say they'd need to replace the entire screen, rather than peel/apply a new protector. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with such an involved process being done by "just anybody." This phone is just so intricate it's hard to imagine a local repair store having the experience needed to "cut open the glued bits, avoid cutting the cables, replacing the screen, and gluing everything back together so it's secure and waterproof."
If Samsung has to fix it themselves then if the phone fails again they have no one but themselves to blame.
Does anyone here have experience with Samsung replacing their phone screen?
I took off the original screen protector about 4 weeks ago. It had no damage, but curiosity beat me and I wanted to try the real, naked screen
It felt sooooooo goooood! Smooth, no fingerprints, brighter, touch nav was better, no rainbow effect ect.
Went naked for over 3 weeks and no scratches or anything. But, a couple of days ago I applied myself the whitestone film. Easy to apply and It's better then samsungs.
So, had a nice adventure
I've read in many places that Samsung will honor the warranty even after removing the plastic screen. Double check on that, but I highly recommend replacing it
Had mine for barely a month before I couldn't deal with all the fingerprints and ugly feeling of the screen
YouTube videos are your friend for gauging the difficulty and seeing the process. Helped give me the courage to do it

That should tell you something.
Getting it right on the first or even second shot may prove challenging. Wet apply hydrocell's are relatively easy, one sided adhesive ones like the stock ones are a true pain.
Anyone who has removed the stock protector can tell you the flaw that causes it. They are using a rigid protector with a weak adhesive.
The folding aspect has allowed Samsung to make the process sound much more complex, but it's installing a protector like any other phone. The only difference is taking more care to smooth it into the crease. Let it sit open for a day and try to take it light for the next few. Almost any third-party protector that is decent as a screen protector will work.
The stock protector is poorly designed, but it's not some magical specialty item. It is a slightly nicer version of the film Samsung wraps all their phones with so they look new out of the box.
Screen is fine, right?
Just like peeling off a bandaid IMO. ;-)
I have decided to send the phone back to Samsung for the replacement of the screen protector. They did not require a phone factory reset for this work. I'll report the quality of the repair work when the phone is returned. I'm hoping it will look "factory fresh". But I've also ordered an aftermarket protector in case I need to fix the fix.

They may not have required you to do one, but I hope you did a backup. It doesn't always mean they won't end up doing one, planned or not.
Does anyone have a source to buy a new screen protector that isn't too rigid or thick? There are tons of options online but I'm not finding an OEM option to buy. But it sounds like some of you may have found a better option anyway. Any links would be appreciated!

I've used Skinomi since my Pixel 2 XL days. The wet application process makes sense and the self repair screen makes it always look new. It's what I'm currently using on the Zflip
When I had mine before I got rid of it, I replaced the screen protector with a liquid one. Worked very well up until the actual screen started cracking on the crease. Keep in mind no drops and everyday use. For the 3rd generation it's definitely sad to see

Thank you so much for this helpful hint. I previously purchased a Whitestone Dome screen protector with install jig. It went on perfectly, but when I folded the phone 30 minutes later it delaminated in the crease. I threw that $20 piece in the trash. Nowhere in the instructions or installation video did it say to wait a full day. Based on your input I installed the same kit again, waited a day before carefully folding the phone and, bam, works like a champ!

UV cured adhesive once fully cured is at its full strength. No additional time is needed.

Yeah I have never had an easy time with either of those types of adhesive systems*. Hydrocell wet apply works best on non-folding screens for me but may not be ideal for a foldable.
*Whitestone sent the wrong screen in the right box so I never did install it. They were a complete offshore nightmare to deal with. The "new" one I received had been incorrectly reboxed. They caused me quit a bit of trouble... and never even apologized for the inconvenience. So free advertising for them.

Glad to hear it worked out in the end. There is somewhat of a curing period with any adhesive, but rigid protectors will still separate over time. Given how flimsy those are, it will be a lot longer than the stock one anyway.
If you use a UV one, longer is not always better. The catch to UV activated adhesive is the same as UV resin. It is on a parabola where it will hit peak adhesion and then actually begin to break down. It's best to follow the exact times provided and then let it get some sunlight to finish off curing.
P.S. Whatever you do, do NOT use a liquid adhesive protector on this phone. It's not an S series or Note where the panel is flush with the case. It's an aluminum body wrapped OVER the screen. While they do claim it's water resistant, getting adhesive under that edge can eventually lead to pressure on the edges that will damage the screen and cause it to fracture.
