SD Card instead of 2nd SIM? - HTC U11+ Questions & Answers

Is using a microSD card simply inserting it in the 2nd SIM tray in the U11+? (Assuming it is supported like the U11 does.)
256GB max capacity?
What happens when the card is added?
Suggestions on which brand to buy?
If these questions are answered elsewhere, let me know.

The U11+ is the exact same phone as the U11 in this respect.
128Go is great already, but you can add a SanDisk ultra if you want. I kept my 128Go SD I had with the U11.

Thanks for the feedback! I will check out the microSD card you suggest.

Hello, I would definitely go with the SD card. I dont know why though but I randomly get a SD card unexpectedly disconnected error. Don't know why it happens. Its a 128gb lexar card. Im starting to think there is something wrong with my phone.

Great idea

Anyone had an issue of the handset not accepting a card due to performance not being good enough
Just fitted a kingston SDCA3/64GBSP UHS-I with error message
HTC are denying any issue

I got Samsung 64GB 100MB/s (U3) MicroSDXC EVO Select Memory Card (long a** name) and all works great. No issues.
Now I need to figure out how to save photos and videos to it. I will update if I have performance issues.

There should an option in the camera app settings that lets you choose whether to save on the internal memory or the sd card.
That used to be the case at least.

Just go to Settings in the camera app, swipe up for more options and you will see the option to save to removable storage/SD card there

The max for the micro sd card is 2TB, but thats abit of an overkill, considering the amount of storage

[Q] Micro SD No Faith

I have tried both a 64gb and a 32gb micro sd card and if I try to save or backup my documents on it sooner or later a few weeks down the road my Note Pro 12.2 reports that I have a corrupt card. I never take it out so that is not the cause. I do not have any apps installed on the card. I am not rooted.
All I am trying to do is keep my music, videos, pictures, and a copy of word and excel files on a micro sd card but I have no trust that my micro sd card is going to work.
I have formatted these cards using my Note Pro. I have formatted these cards using my Windows PC. But several weeks down the road I get the corrupt disk error... please reformat!
Is rooting the answer?
Any help is appreciated.
Sounds like a bad card to me. What brand is it?
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
This usually happens with low-class or cheap-brand cards.
In general you're best off only using class 10 or above cards by Sandisk or Samsung. Anything else is highly unstable.
I have a San Disk Class 10 64gb but my other card is a PNY Class 6 32gb. I guess I'll look at getting a Samsung? I believe I had read somewhere about this device not liking 64gb cards? Or maybe I read something about it not allowing files to be saved to external storage. Something Samsung was doing.
Anyway thanks for the input. I would like to use a 32gb card as I really don't need 64gb so if my PNY isn't going to work I need to get something that will.
How does this card look?

If that samsung is as fast as it's rated that looks like a good card.
I'm using the Sandisk Extreme Plus 64gb but have only had it for a month and a half. So far no issues but I wonder if it too will be a time bomb.

There's no issue with 64GB cards. There's no issue with 128GB either. Some of the older devices had issues with SDXC UHS-I cards, but that was over a year ago.
There is, however, an issue with Android KitKat no longer allowing non-stock apps to write to the SD card. That's Google's doing. It has nothing to do with corrupt cards.
Samsung and Sandisk cards are both excellent. Just make sure they're class 10 or higher.

What is the best method to copy delete movies to/from my micro SD card? Should I unmount it and remove it or should I power off my tablet and remove it. Or will it be better just to copy them from a USB stick to the card while the card is still in the tablet? I'm hoping to keep 10-15 movies on my card and swap them off to put more on probably every 6 weeks and I want to know which way is the best way not to harm my card.

Unmount the SD card through Settings --> General --> Storage --> Unmount SD Card.
Or connect the tablet via USBcable to the PC and copy it onto the SDcard that way. (It loads as a network device in explorer)
I've got 11 films, two shows and a handful of concerts on my MicroSD and swap regularly, I usually use one of these two methods.
For me, I use a MacBook Pro which for some reason does not allow me USB 3.0 connectivity to the tablet (driver issue I'm sure but try as I might I have never gotten it to work). I therefore use a USB 2.0 cable and Kies to copy files to the tablet that way. I'm able to pick the external card as a destination and transfer at USB 2.0 speed.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Hopefully with the new card coming Wednesday my problem will be solved.
I have and use a 64GB SanDisk Micro SD Card on my P900 and can open, copy, move files from and to the sdcard using samsung's stock file manager (My Files) without any problems.

[Q] 128GB MicroSD support, problematic?

H2testw verified card (passed) caused my MT7-L09 to reboot spontaneously over and over again until I remove the MicroSD card. This started yesterday probably after I installed a few more apps. These have since been removed. Card has about 62.4GB out of 119GB, used 56.5GB. Formatted to exFAT on Windows 7. Working fine for about 2 weeks until yesterday.
I bit the bullet and hard reset the phone this morning. Clicked the MicroSD card back into the slot and loh and behold, it started to restart again!
Anyone have the same problem? Using a Sandisk SDXC-UHS-I card here. Its not hardware fault with the MicroSD card slot because replacing the 128GB card with a 64GB card presents no such problem.
Edit: Inserted the card into my Note 3. Card presented no problems at all.
Have u solved this problem yet? Im thinking of buying the 128gb sandisk ultra with the 48mbps read speed to be used in the Mate 7. Is this the same sandisk microsd card you are using?
I am proud owner of MT7-T10 who is having exactly the same problem after inserting newly purchased 64GB Sony UHS-I Class 10 microSDHC Card. In fact, I actually bought 2 of these type of sd - I have not tried replacing it with my wife's sd card - must do this test to flag out DOA (defective on arrival) sd card.
It was working just fine until the sd card is half full. I tried factory reset and reformatted the sd card and the issue reoccurs after transferring all my data back to sd card (i have not tried without removing sd card thou). Since the unit was still under warranty, I took initiative and brought the MT7 to Huawei service centre and even demonstrate the issue. They happily replaced with a new unit but even that had the same problem out of the box. I also asked if they have any list of compatible sd card supported on MT7. The front desk simply mentioned that it usually kingston, but there isn't any black & white papers or sites to support that statement.
I also came across forums emphasizing to use only popular branded sd card and sandisk was one of them. Since you are having the same problem even with sandisk, I won't be surprised if kingston too have this problem. Or may be it is MT7 sd slot defect by design. :fingers-crossed:
As overall, I'm happy with MT7. Extending the storage using sd card would have been a added advantage but this is not the case at the moment. :good:
No such problems on my Sandisk 128 GB Class 10 - had been using it on the phone for past 4 months

I did it twice but the problem persist.
i experienced that before, but in xperia and old s3. It happened due to runaway media-scanner process. somehow it kept running scan all the time from the start. It didn't cause bootloop / restart, but it literally hanged my phone that time
I'm not 100% sure but i read somewhere that Huawei recommended to use 32 gig capacity Max. Or you could experience bugs.

I had only about 11GB space left ... I don't think space usage is any issue. It boils down to quality of the card

SD card not showing.

Hi all, My S7 no longer sees the 32gb micro SD card. I have removed and cleaned it, gone into safe mode just to see if it's a rogue app was causing the problem. It's still under warranty. Before I go down that route any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
Did you install the "Prime" Kernel ? That was the same to me and this Kernel was "guilty"
Install another Kernel and your SD should be recognized
Sorry should have said "It's out of the box no root". Don't know when it failed to read but yesterday in the maintenance app it didn't show. I have also cleared the cache, just wondering if a Factory reset would fix it?
Does the card work in a PC?
If yes, back it up, wipe it (Delete partitions > create new primary partition > format to FAT32) try it back in the phone, if it works copy your stuff back to it
If it works in PC but not phone, try another card in the phone, if that doesn't work RMA the phone
When I get home from my sons in Bristol will do as you say won't be for a few days. I did a Google and looks like there are a few of us having the same problem. Not quite sure when but think after last SW update a week ago or so, just noticed after!
Thanks.
Just got home and found another micro sd card only 2gb but the phone now sees it. The old card was a genuine Samsung 32gb the only problem is that I don't seem to have a micro card holder to see if the PC will see it. As they are quite cheap now what is the max memory size that will work in the phone and any recommendations?
Thanks.

Good stuff, just going from what it says on Samsung's site, and Android Central
Have you managed to fill all 256GB and have it all readable?
Wow 256GB card could fit the whole of the world's populations data and then some. I am going for a 64GB card with the internal 32GB that will be more than enough for me.

Just ordered a 400gb micro SD.

Been using a 200gb that came free with the purchase of the V20. Gonna pass this off to my son. I'm running out of room and wanna carry more. This 400gb should give me enough room. ?
Anybody else using one in the v30/+?
All set up. 367gb free. I can pretty much use the internal 128gb for whatever phone wise (apps), and this for the downloads and music (I store mine locally). I do have a streaming account though, but prefer my collection on my SD card.

Wow. 400GB.
Here's the link you couldn't post for some reason, if other people need it:

https://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Ultr...21160&sr=8-2&keywords=400gb+microsd+card&th=1
Also, other size choices on that page.
My last three phones (gen3 Galaxy Nexus, LG Nexus 5, Moto XT1225) didn't have microSD cards, although the 2014 Moto XT1225 (unofficial smaller version of the Moto Nexus 6) did have 64GB internal storage. I ordered a 256GB card from that page -- which eventually will be in addition to my 128GB V30+ when it comes.
Now trying to decide what my wife's LG V30 will get. That 200GB is only $73 right now and looks very tempting for her phone.

$73 for a 200gb doesn't seem bad, it's actually a way better value compared to the 400gb. But I was going for size. My 200gb held up well for the time I used it though.

Using "A1 SD Bench" gives the results posted below. My PC doesn't have USB 3.0 yet as this spring is my lustrum update year for the motherboard, ram and CPU. So it's not really worth testing on there.
Edit: Results posted on the following post. I forgot to attach them and edit mode didn't give me the option of doing so.
Forgot results.
If anyone wants some stats on the card here is an post from the V20 forum and what I got of test:
Okay I got the Card of SanDisk Ultra micro SDXC UHS-I Card 400 GB "Well actually less then 400 GB because of companies continuously lies which seems to be of no end to it" and it is running much faster then my old samsung 128 evo or evo+. It's not running as fast as your 128 GB samsung pro+ but anyway il find the results. Iv made test with 3 programs on the V20.
First one is A1 SD Bench which you used:
Read 78.14 MB/s - Write 41,21MB/s
Read 78,19MB/s - Write 41,37MB/s
Read 79,45MB/s - Write 42,97MB/s
Read 78,50MB/s - Write 41,07MB/s
Then SD Card Test
Read 88 MB/s - Write 42 MB/s
Read 87 MB/s - Write 42 MB/s
Read 88 MB/s - Write 40 MB/s
Read 89 MB/s - Write 42 MB/s
and last without any advertising AndroBench:
Read 84.16 MB/s - Write 46,59 MB/s
Read 84.39 MB/s - Write 50,16 MB/s
Read 84.81 MB/s - Write 53,23 MB/s
Read 84.25 MB/s - Write 55,9 MB/s
As you can see the write is far from as good as the Card you had of 128 GB... But of cause this is 400 GB and still a good deal faster then my old ones I had. Put a lot of stuff on it already. I also found out my Laptop is getting old as it corrupts the image of the UHD video when playing.... My Mobile seems to actually have more juice in that department then my laptop as it runs fine on the mobile. I tested which quality I wanted to run on my mobile for best video results and used the Pagan New Year in the Winter for it. I did a look at it yesterday and It seems FHD and 60 frames a second gave the best results on the V20.

Flash memory has a finite number of writes to each page before they 'wear out' to some headroom is required to spread out the read/write cycles and manage the storage. This headroom is the difference between the actual size of the card and the amount you get to use. It's called wear levelling. An explanation can be found on Wikipedia.
400GB is a lot! If you use a program like Aftiss (which is on the forums, just give it a quick search) and use the setting "0" when formatting the card, that whole 400GB will turn into Internal Storage. I have it set up that way on my Verizon V30 with a 128GB microSD Card. Just do a backup beforehand just in case anything goes wrong (which it shouldn't.)

Probably not since the microSD becomes the internal storage where all of the "active" system & app files (user changes) are stored
edit:
the following should explain it
https://fossbytes.com/android-sd-card-internal-storage-adoptable-storage/
so it might be possible, but there are possible consequences (data corruption, system messed up, etc.) - a reject beforehand is highly recommended

Oops! Didn't see this reply. You are not able to remove the SD Card, well at least not recommended to, because if you removed it and some apps had placed necessary files on it, they won't be able to run. I would strongly recommend against it just because of the dangers that could come with it.

Most harddrive makers and memory card makers has always cheated with the real amount of space.
The last company I know that kept the rules of real storage was IBM who made the Deathstars as they sadly ended up being known by. They then sold there harddrive line to another company, Hitachi or something I think it was. But the thing is when you bought a 20, 40 GB or 60 GB harddrive from IBM you actually got those GB and no cheating.

I rather not as I many times pop it out and into my computer - I don't have time for the stupidity of connecting the phone to the computer and having all these issues with it which should not have been. So mostly because of frustration I end up just popping the SD out of the phone and putting it directly into my computer. Then you can do multiple things on it without any error popping up and have top speed.
I'm using the 400GB with my v30+ simply for Rom back-ups and storing my music.

SD Card Recommendations

Anyone use Samsung micro SD cards in their U12 (or other device)?
I've used SanDisk exclusively the last few years, and PNY before that. But, the Samsung Evo cards are consistently $10-$15 cheaper for a UHS-3 128gb card.
Just wondering if anyone else uses them, and how well they work for 4K videos.
the Samsung ones are the best, but the PNY 256GB is UHS III class 10 speed V30 A1, and works very well on my HTC U12+, for the price worth each penny

I got uhs samsung microsd 64gb. I got it from my previous phone note4. No problem. Very quick read and write.
I am using Sandisk's Extreme Pro 64GB UHS-II - https://www.sandisk.com/home/memory-cards/microsd-cards/extremepro-microsd-uhs-ii for my 4K recording and playback... very fast read and write speeds with no problems to report.

Do you save your pictures to the SDCARD or internal storage?
I'm getting the message my SDCARD isn't fast enough when I save to it from the photo app using this Kingston SDCA3/64GBSP 64 GB microSDHCUHS-I Speed Class3 U3 Memory Card so looks like I need to upgade my card. Just that Extreme pro is over £100 so want to make sure it works without any warnings before I pull the trigger on it.
Thanks

Yup, I save both 4K videos and pictures to the SD-Card with zero problems. Just make sure you don't encrypt the SD-Card as it impacts both read/write speeds which in turn results in the slow speed warning being displayed.
Cheers
Edit: I got mine at a discounted price of $95

Cool, think gonna have to buy this card as my old card that worked fine in the HTC 10 and u11 is not encrypted and still get the warnings.
Thanks!

I was getting the same message for my transcend card, I almost bought a new sandisk card, and stumbled onto the storage settings for the card on the phone. It gives me the option to format the card for the phone. It says that after formatting, the card will only work with the the phone. I am ok with that because it is for the phone and I like to store my pics on the external sd card to not waste space on the internal. Just go to settings > storage > portable storage (select the setting icon next to your sd card) > format
