[GUIDE] Root Huawei Honor 8 Lite and install TWRP custom recovery (EMUI 5.X) - Honor 8 Lite ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other De

Note-
Applicable for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10
Similar steps are applicable for EMUI 4.X as well but TWRP file will change.
Hi Folks,
Just adding this guide for rooting method for Honor 8 Lite. This was tested by one of the user referring my original guide for Honor 6X and confirmed this is working absolutely fine. I will just simplify the steps so that any new users can do this without any problem and without any prior experience to rooting, it may be long but will be the simple enough for all the users.
Prerequisites-
Enable the developer option in settings-
Go to Settings--> About Phone-->Tab build number 7 times to enable this setting.
Go back in setting page, just above system update, you will see a new menu as -Developer Options
Scroll for the debugging section and enable the USB Debugging
You will be prompted for the confirmation with RSA key, just accept it.
Enable OEM Unlock in Developer Options (just above the USB debugging option) – Most probably this option will not be there on EMUI 5.0 (only few have seen on EMUI but it was there on EMUI 4.1 for all but rarely on EMUI 5.0)
Please note down you build number, this may become handy in case something goes wrong to restore your phone via DLOAD. In Settings- About phone- Build Number
Installation of required Drivers.
Connect your phone to PC and install Hi Suite on PC and it will additionally install all the necessary drivers to PC and HiSUite on Mobile.
Download and Install ADB from Link
Accept all the prompts and install ADB drive system wise.
Once installation is completed, if default options are chosen, it will be under C:\adb
Downloading the necessary files.
Download TWRP from Link Thanks to @OldDroid for his Original Thread and @surdu_petru & @XePeleato- This was not possible without their excellent work.
Move the downloaded file under C:\adb or wherever you have installed the ADB.
Download the SuperSU file from this Link and put it in SD card or keep handy on PC so that you can copy to internal memory later.
Get the unlock as mentioned in this thread
Actual Procedure
Unlocking the bootloader-
Backup all your data as unlocking the bootloader will reset the device and all your data will be erased.
On windows machine, go to folder C:\adb or wherever you installed the adb drivers.
Press shift+right click together and select Open command prompt here (it will be open PowerShell here on Windows 8 and Windows 10 machine)
Run - adb reboot bootloader (this command may prompt for acceptance of RSA key if not already accepted)
This will boot the phone into bootloader mode.
Run - fastboot oem unlock <16 digit unlock code- Put your actual code you obtained from Huawei site > (This step will unlock the bootloader and will erase all your data)
Phone will restart automatically.
Installing TWRP
Once on the system, open the PowerShell or command prompt again in ADB folder (can use the previous instance as well)
Run - adb reboot bootloader
Once in bootloader, Run - fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-berlin.img (This will install the TWRP recovery for EMUI 5.0 on your phone)
Once done with the flashing the TWRP, Run - fastboot reboot
Rooting
Once booted to system, open the PowerShell or command prompt in ADB folder (can use the previous instance as well)
Run - adb reboot recovery
And your phone will boot into the TWRP recovery by Open Kirin Team.
Copy the SuperU file downloaded to SD card or Internal memory.
Install the SuperSU zip.
Reboot and enjoy the complete ownership of the device with root permission and happy Flashing the custom ROMs
Video tutorial by @PaulR11 here for 6X, this will remain the same.

Its now showing Huawei eRecovery but am getting the message "Getting Package info Failed". How do I recover from this???

Can you move apps to SD with rooted Huawei Honor 8 lite?
I am deeply unsatisfied that you simply cannot move apps to SD on this phone, and now I can't even update my system because there is no enough space to download the update...

Honor 8 weird glitch wont let me pass setup

Hi I just bought my honor 8, i unlocked my bootloader, then tried flashing twrp, it said it worked, but it just went to EMUI recovery. I must of flashed the wrong one, it was the american one from twrp.me. I am on emui 5.0. So then i went to developer option and accidently clicked revert to default settings, which turned off my oem unlock. so this turned FRP lock back on. I had the bootloader still unlocked so i tried flashing surdas twrp this time, and it failed. so i rebooted my phone and it went to the recovry and said it got seriously data corrupt or something and said to repair so i did, then i rebooted and it went to setup. but now it wont let me get through the setup because i cant type.. it just brings up google voice typing. So somethings messed up.
Model is FRD-L14
Emui 5.0
the bootloader is currently locked.
FRP lock is on.
I can get to fastboot, recovery and it boots up to setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don;t know how i can fix this.
Is there any way i can flash stock rom and recovery in like download mode or something?
I have simlar issue to this https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/help/help-keyboard-google-voice-t3629372

I dont understand how I downgrade. I have a locked bootloader and no custom recovery.
Use a sdcard and create a directory "dload". In this directory first place the rollback UPDATE.APP. Use the 3-button combo to enter dload mode. Then once done change that UPDATE.APP with the B130 (EMUI 4.1) UPDATE.APP of your device. Again enter dload mode and you should have successfully downgraded.
You can now upgrade from software updater to EMUI 5.0.

Download the rollback from above and after extraction copy the UPDATE.APP file into the dload folder. Once done replace this with the B120/B130 UPDATE.APP.
You don't need to extract the UPDATE.APP but extract the update.zip which would give you the UPDATE.APP to be copied into the dload folder.

For your model the EMUI 4.1 version is B162 which you can download from http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G1201/g88/v66294/f1/full/update.zip

Thanks alot man :].
once i do all of this, and then after i update my emui to 5.0. How exactly do I properly install twrp? lol.
I figured out how to unlock my bootloader, but i don't know how to install the proper twrp version without bricking my device. Then i'd be installing a lineage os rom after i have twrp, which i know how to do from using my galaxy s4 .

Once you are on emui 5.0, make sure you enable developer options and keep the oem unlock option ON. Then enable usb debugging and reboot to fastboot using your PC and typing "adb reboot fastboot".
Once in fast boot mode, first unlock your boot loader using "fastboot oem unlock CODE". This will prompt for a factory reset and once done repeat the above in developer options and enter fast boot mode again. You can simply type "fastboot flash recovery /path/to/recovery.img" where the recovery.img is the one you download from https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/development/twrp-t3566563
Voila you have successfully flashed twrp and now can flash whichever rom you want.

I've come into a problem. I've installed twrp and everything, but now im trying to flash a lineageos rom. when i try to wipe and format the data it says it failed: failed to mount /data device or resource busy unable to mount storage.
I went into mount and i have cache, vendor, and micro sdcard selected. also "mount system partition read-only" selected aswell. my storage selected says 0 MB.
Any idea what to do?

Make sure you turn off FRP lock.
If you have FRP locked it is because you didn't enable OEM Unlock in EMUI 4.1

I fixed the issue. FRP was already unlocked. But I just advance wiped the data on those and it fixed the issue. Thanks man. Do you know what the most stable 7.1.2 ROM is? Cause I just used the lineageos 14.1 one and it randomly reboots on me when I have music playing, actually its just random in general.

I have come into a bit of a problem. I turned off or unlocking in developer options, then I rebooted my phone and it just bootlooped. So I did the thing you told me to do before with the roll back and the 4.1 emui. That all went fine, but after it finished installing 4.1 and restarted it's in bootloops still :/

Rebranding Honor 8 FRD-AL10 to FRD-L19 is Easy
I converted two mint FRD-AL10 to FRD-L19 versions yesterday. They have since both taken OTA updates over WiFi. One is at FRDL19C432B360 and the other took an additional update to FRDL19C432B380. I am in the Western United States, the phones know they are here too, but believe they are destined for Europe. When I take a local call, a +1 automatically shows up in front of the number on the call log. When I browse to Yahoo the phone goes to the Yahoo United Kingdom and Ireland home page. The FRD-AL10 phones were both at EMUI 5.0 and Android 7.0 and still at EMUI 5.0 and Android 7.0 after being rebranded to FRD-L19 UK. Everything works including dual SIMs. There is no remnant of Chinese apps, no pinyin characters anywhere. There are absolutely no problems. You do not need to root your phone with this method and you will end up with factory new like European firmware load.
Search these forums and obtain the following files:
Huwaei USB Drivers
DC Unlocker client
Minimal ADB and Fastboot
TWRP-3.1.1-1-frd.img

FRD-L19C432B131-hw-eu-OPU_TWRP_FRD.zip
Format an SDXD memory card. Make sure it is class 10 speed.
Unarchive the rollback package and copy the entire dload folder to the SD card root directory.
Copy FRD-L19C432B131-hw-eu-OPU_TWRP_FRD.zip to the SD card root folder.
Install the Huwaei USB drivers on your PC and phone.
Install DC Unlocker client on your phone.
Install Minimal ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
Copy twrp-3.1.1-1-frd.img into the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder.
Enable USB debugging on your phone. Enter the system app and tap your build number 5 times and the developer mode becomes available.
In developer mode enable USB debugging and if OEM unlock is there, turn it on. It will likely not be there on the Chinese version, so if you don't see OEM unlock don't worry.
Accept the USB prompts on your phone. Reject communication with Huwaei Suite, Huwaei App, etc., and close them.
Follow the DC Unlocker instructions, buy credit with PayPal, and write down the bootloader code when you see it.
Unlock the bootloader. Open a command prompt in the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder.
Enter
adb devices
The response should return the serial number of your phone proving USB communication
Enter
adb reboot bootloader
Your phone should now display the fastboot recovery screen
Enter
fastboot devices
The response should return the serial number of your phone
Enter
fastboot OEM unlock [your boot code here]
Your phone will factory reset and is now unlocked. Power down and reboot the phone.
Go to system app, developer, and turn on USB debugging, as before accept USB prompts, and reject and close Huwaei apps.
Open a command prompt in the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder.
Enter
adb devices
Enter
adb reboot bootloader
The phone should now once again be at the fastboot recovery screen
Enter
fastboot devices
If your phone’s serial number is returned, you have communication.
Now install TWRP.
Enter
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-1-frd.img
When the flash writing is done install the SD card and enter
flashboot reboot
Hold down the volume up and power buttons as the phone boots up, you can release the power button at the blue honor screen, but continue to hold down the volume up until you see TWRP.
Tap the install button
Tap Select storage and select the SD card.
Select the FRD-L19C432B131-hw-eu-OPU_TWRP_FRD.zip file and swipe to flash.
When the flashing is done, your oem.info has been changed to Europe.
Select reboot to system.
Hold down volume up, volume down and power simultaneously while it reboots, continue to hold until the phone is in Huwaei erecovery mode.
Erecovery will force the phone to install the update.app file in the dload folder from the sd card. It will take several minutes.
When complete let the phone reboot on its own and hookup WiFi, enable USB debugging and let Huwaei apps hookup. Your phone will appear to be a legitimate European model to the network and will immediately begin to take OTA updates. Your boot loader is locked again, you are not rooted, TWRP is gone and you have a stock UK European version FRD-L19 in your hands.

It looks like you are trying to flash a stock recovery cn.img
If you are at EMUI 5 and I think you are, use the twrp-3.1.1-1-frd.img
It will decrypt the encryption. Other recovery images here cannot decrypt and you must reformat the data partion to use them with EMUI 5. Also, if you root use the SuperSU vesion available from these forums specifically for use with EMUI 5 in the file name. Search for it. Again encryption is involved.
If you can get into fastboot you can fix it. At the bottom of the fastboot screen it should say phone unlocked. If it says locked you will need to unlock the bootloader again.
Always make sure you have USB communication between fastboot and the phone. For some reason Huwaei phones will sometimes disable USB debugging with power down and power up. You need to check each time.

Rollback to EMUI 4.1 C900B300 UK
Search for EMUI 4.1_C900B300, find and use the update.app in this file
Honor%208_Rollback%20Package_FRD-L19_from%20Android%207.0%20EMUI%205.0%20to%20Android%206.0%20EMUI%204.1_C900B300_UK.rar
This is the official Huwaei FRD-L19 rollback package. It rolls your firmware back to the first UK European release of the FRD-L19. It is a full firmware load and will replace everything.
If you get this on your phone, before erecovery is complete or immediately after, your phone will begin taking OTA updates and all will be fine.
If you can get into flashboot, you should be able to get into erecovery, put dload/update.app in the root folder of your sd card, hold volume up, volume down and power throughout bootup.
If erecovery fails the oem info on your phone is not set to europe. Find and install the MT Huwaei Multi-Tool version 7 from the MT forum. Use it to change your oem info and try erecovery again.
The Multi-Tool can do much more without the need to type individual lines of adb and fastboot commands. To run, you execute one of the .bat files in a command window. You will only have two command menu language choices, Russian or English. Choose ru.bat or en.bat accordingly. Try the menu commands without your phone plugged in first.
Thanks friend. I will try id after work. Today in night i tried install rollback(al19 UK) and romC432B131-UK downloaded by hihonor.com. Install by DLOAD folder not work :/ while i pressed three button Phone switch on and stop on (HONOR ON BLUE SCREEN). Install not opened why? Next i tried install only ROM by fastboot. All files install successfull, but recovery.img not work. (maybe file is damaged?) Finally i repeat installed successfull chinese marshmallow b135.
Anyone have good download link working Al19 rom for my AL10?
Sorry for my not good English and very low experience

Request for a Guide

I'm not so happy with EMUI 8/Oreo on my Mate 9. Several widgets don't update, requiring me to change the screen resolution during the day (weird temporary fix). I'd rather run Nova but EMUI pushes against that. I have a pretty good backup phone (ZTE Axon 7) so I thought I would give a generic system image a try. The last time I rooted and installed an alternative ROM was 2014, so I'm rusty. I successfully put minimal fastboot on a PC, unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP 3.2.1-0 (something may have gone wrong already at this point since I accessed it by vol up + power, rather than vol up + vol down + power). Then I installed the generic system image. It booted, but gave error messages at boot. Perhaps all I needed to do was install it a second time, but instead I tried installing a different image, achieved bootloop, made matters worse, and was rescued by the amazing and wonderful FunkyHuawei.
I am thinking about trying again, but I wondered if an expert would write a more patient guide that provides the exact steps to flashing a generic system image. By the exact steps, I mean with links to files and what you type in minimal fastboot (if indeed that is the right program), or when it is best to install from an SD card. I'm sure such a guide would get more people to try other ROMs besides the generic ROM.

Oh...You're already bootloader unlocked that makes it even easier.
I'm using the system.IMG form the thread below this paragraph. Tried a few different aosp ROMs and it seems to be the best so far. Aside from a couple things of course. And the honor 8 Pro is the same CPU, GPU found in the mate 9.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8-pro/development/rom-t3758564.
In the main post of that thread, just follow step 2 and 3 and you'll be good to go for having an aosp ROM.
As for magisk/root... You can follow my guide below that I posted the other day. Just let the aosp ROM boot up once first. Also I can extract the ramdisk.IMG you'll need if you can't once you check it over.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-install-magisk-mate-9-running-t3773878
Basically in a nutshell to get setup on an aosp ROM is as follows
1 Download the ROM from the first thread i posted
2 Extract the system.img to where your adb folder is
3 Run command prompt from there
4 With your phone powered off. Hold the volume up button and connect it to your computer (fastboot screen)
5 Run command fastboot flash system system.img
6 Then type fastboot reboot but when you goto run this command get ready to hold the volume up button when the screen goes off so you can get the phone into stock recovery
7 Once in the recovery, perform a factory reset
8 Reboot the phone and should be good to go
Need to do first boot on its own before rooting
Thanks!!!
It will be about a week before I can try again but I'm looking forward to it. Are you pretty happy with it?

Yeah, fairly happy about it. A few bugs though but nothing major. Get better standby drain and about the same SOT time as EMUI. The only thing that is lacking is the camera in aosp doesn't use both cameras.
There is the stock camera port (works with magisk) but it's lacking a few things like video recording doesn't work... And umm not sure what else.
I needed to install an update, enable developer options and enable OEM unlocking (which was greyed out) before it would install. Here is my earlier post:
Dang, didn't work. Here is what I did.
-reset phone, but did not enable developer options.
-extracted and placed system.img in the minimal fastboot and adb folder. Ran a command prompt with administrative rights (win 10)
-shut off and connected Huawei mate 9 by USB, holding vol up
-vol up brought the EMUI restore screen. Shut off and tried again, same outcome. So shut off and tried vol down, and that brought up the fastboot screen. It reported phone unlocked but FRP locked.
-ran command "fastboot flash system system.img" and get:
target reported max download size of 471859200 bytes
sending sparse 'system' 1/4 (460796 KB)...
OKAY [ 11.167s]
writing 'system' 1/4...
FAILED (remote: Command not allowed)
finished. total time: 11.183s
I suspect this is due to the FRP locked condition.
Now I've run into a different problem: the EMUI screen gives me the options of
Download latest version and recovery
Reboot
Shutdown
It does not give me the option of a factory reset. What seemed to work was holding volume down through a couple of boots, when EMUI gave me the option of a factory reset. This gave me what appears to be a fully functioning system!

Yeah, the FRP lock would prevent fastboot commands from working.
So, your system is back up and running?
OK, now that I have it up and running, here is the procedure I used, fixing what are either typos or variations because my system was slightly different. I unlocked the bootloader using instructions from:
http://www.teamandroid.com/2017/04/08/huawei-mate-9-unlock-bootloader/
I used Minimal ADB and Fastboot from
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
I downloaded and extracted the system image from the link Wirmpolter provided:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8-pro/development/rom-t3758564
Here is a slightly edited set of instructions that worked for me:
a. unlock bootloader
b. reset phone
c. enable developer mode (settings/system/about phone tap on build number until developer mode is enabled), enable OEM unlock and USB debugging
d. check that FRP unlock and bootloader unlock worked by booting into fastboot screen (for me, hold VOL DOWN while booting)
1 Download the ROM from the thread above
2 Extract the system.img to where your adb folder is
3 Run command prompt from there (or use MA&F's desktop icon, which does the same thing)
4 With your phone powered off. Hold the volume DOWN button and connect it to your computer (fastboot screen)
5 Run command: fastboot flash system system.img
6 Then type fastboot reboot but when you goto run this command get ready to hold the volume up button when the screen goes off so you can get the phone into stock recovery
7 Once in the recovery, perform a factory reset [eRecovery didn't have this option, so I rebooted a couple of times while holding vol up and it eventually gave me the option to factory reset]
8 Reboot the phone and should be good to go

I'm up and running. Thanks! So far, the only glitches are:
While Android can see and format the SD card (a Samsung 64GB), the SD card is invisible over a USB connection and Google Maps and my music player can't see it. File explorer and copy files to the SD card, so the SD card works.
The camera is terrible, but you have a fix for that.
I'm quite lost about how to install Magisk and a camera module
At the risk of asking too much, I have another request. I'm looking at how to install the stock camera on my Mate 9 with the AOSP, and here is my pathetic understanding of the steps.
First, I looked at your (Wirmpolter) instructions:
1. Install latest Magisk Manager from the Official Thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
Follow the instructions of "Install Via Magisk Manager" in the main thread, but instead of providing the boot image (which these devices do NOT have), provide the stock ramdisk.img extracted from your Update.app using Huawei Update Extractor.
2. If you are using Mate 9 with model MHA-L29636 running on firmware ending in B362, you can download the stock ramdisk.img I extracted from official OTAs in the attachments
If you have stock ramdisk images for other devices, please share them and I'll add them to the OP.
3. Pull the patched image with adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img, and flash the patched ramdisk via fastboot:
fastboot flash ramdisk patched_boot.img
Reboot and you shall have a properly rooted device passing SafetyNet, start playing with some Magisk modules!
Here are some questions:
1. Huawei update extractor
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2433454
I probably need help using this. The item I need extracted is the update.app, but where do I get the update.app that I extract from? And I'm extracting ramdisk.img?
2. download file for my phone that will be the source of the update.app in #1 (MHA-L29 8.0.0.366(C567)) from FunkyHuawei? Firmware finder? or from the phone itself? (see, I'm pretty lost)
3. install magisk manager (from https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445):
This method does not need root, and also does not require a custom recovery.
However, you MUST have a stock boot image dump beforehand, and you also have to be able to flash the patched boot image, either through fastboot/download mode or ODIN
Install the latest Magisk Manager -- this is an android app? Do I sideload it?
If you're planning to flash the patched boot image through ODIN, go to Settings > Update Settings > Patched Boot Output Format, and select .img.tar. For normal users leave it as the default .img
Press Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File, and select your stock boot image file
Magisk Manager will now patch your boot image, and store it in [Internal Storage]/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Copy the patched boot image to your PC. If you can't find it via MTP, you can pull the file with ADB:
adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Flash the patched boot image to your device and reboot. Here is the command if using fastboot:
fastboot flash boot /path/to/patched_boot.img
Magiskmanager is an android app. How do I install on my phone? I was expecting this to be a windows app that would install magisk on my phone, so was thrown when it was an .apk.
Finally, the camera image is here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75848917&postcount=2
It isn't clear to me how to flash using Magisk, but perhaps that will be obvious once I have magisk operating.

Firmware Finder (they have Windows desktop and Android apps for it, and there's also http://pro-teammt.ru/firmware-database/ which does the job just as well, though it's all in Russian.)
Find the FullOTA-MF firmware that corresponds to your model, download the 'update.zip' that goes with it - on the website, it's under the link 'update' in the same row. If you do it on your phone in the Firmware Finder app, hit "Download" on the relevant detail screen and it'll prompt you for which files you want.
Once you've got the update.zip, extract it, you'll find a file UPDATE.APP, which is what the extractor wants. If it throws up an error, disable CRC checking of the extracted content. (I don't recall what the label for it is and I don't have it installed on the machine in front of me...); and yes, you'll want RAMDISK.img from it.

Magisk Manager wants to create a patched ramdisk image. When it updates, it'll want to update the ramdisk image on your device (which it'll be able to do since it's running with root privileges itself anyway), but for the first pass, it needs that image provided and for you to manually flash it.
Thanks!
That is perfect. I downloaded the correct file from FF and I will try installing Magisk tomorrow or Sunday.

The magisk manager app apk you just run on your phone to install it, no side loading required.
Thanks! Magisk installed! To flash the camera app, I first extract and flash kernel.img from update.app with fastboot, put the camera zip (extract first?) in the magisk folder on the phone to install it with magisk?
That worked

Root Guide

Found this while trolling through the Chinese forums, none of this is my work, I have translated the instructions as best I can.
Disclaimers; I have not tried this, it may brick the global rom, the custom recovery is likely only in Chinese language.
You need:
Boot Loader unlock code (currently probably not possible to get)
Huawei USB drivers
Recovery image (attached)
Magisk package (attached)
files: https://mega.nz/#!PM0EmYLA!384hZjmJ9ExNc7Q8rSqssHunWSO7AxQ3GA4qet6RX4E
Extract files to a folder, open command prompt and change into this folder.
Unlock bootloader (BL unlock will clear the phone data, please do a backup)
- Obtain an official unlock code
- double-click to open the "Huawei Toolbox.exe"
- click "unlock bootloader "
- enter the unlock code in the pop up window , click OK, and wait for the phone to unlock complete restart.
Flash the third-party recovery
- Turn off the phone and connect the computer. Press and hold the “Volume Down” button and “Power button” until the phone displays the android page and release your finger.
- open command prompt and run:
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp.img
- after seeing the two OKAY feedback from the command line, the flash is successful.
Enter recovery to flash root image (this step will clear all data of the mobile phone including memory card, please make a backup in advance)
- long press “Volume Up” and “Power” ", until you see the a twrp logo, release the keys and wait to enter recovery mode
- After entering recovery, click the second item “Clear”, click “Format Data Partition” in the lower left corner, slide the slider to enter the clear, wait for the progress bar to complete
- Return to the recovery homepage, click on the last item "Advanced", select the last item "Remove data forced encryption", slide the slider to release, wait for completion
Copy the root package to the phone
- In Command Prompt type or copy the following commands
adb push magisk-installer.zip /sdcard
adb push magisk.apk /sdcard
Install Image
- Whilst still in recovery mode, click the first item to install the magisk-installer.zip package from the sdcard , slide the slider to install, wait for the flash to complete, and restart the phone
- After reboot is complete, click “File Manager”, select the apk file “magisk.apk” just copied from the memory card when install is finished, open the magisk app and click “No, thank you” in the pop-up window
- Return to the command line tool, type the code to execute, and wait for the phone to automatically restart
Fastboot reboot recovery
- after the restart, open "magisk", it should show that the installation is complete, that is, ROOT is achieved.

But none, problem is the v20 (china version) seems to get OTA way before us, they all got v143 2 weeks ago.
I did find the menu to do it, but it only supports if the image is stored on an sdcard, and when I click it it says no sdcard found. so its impossible.
Tried same with similar results. One day eh? ?

Does that mean you rooted you device (with the files from above) or you just unlocked the bootloader?
I was able to unlock my bootloader with a code from funkyhuawei (about 18 €, site seems to be down currently). I did not use the unlock tool above, mainly because its chinese
- Enabled "USB debugging" and "OEM unlock" in developer settings
- Connected phone to PC, opened adb and used "adb reboot bootloader"
- Unlocked via "fastboot oem unlock *16digit code*"
This worked out fine. However, as far as i understand it magisk is installed over twrp (recovery_ramdisk), removing twrp but granting you root. This makes me kind of nervous since twrp has been a nice safety net on several occasions. This is why I stopped after unlocking the bootloader. Maybe someone has more experience on this? Why is there so little interest in rooting this phone?
Regards
root achieved
I don't know if nobody's interested or nobody wants to try rooting this phone. However, I just went ahead and tried it. I used this guide: https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#emui-9 (posted in https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-view-20/help/root-t3900266). https://androidhost.ru/search.html is were I got the firmware from (posted in https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-view-20/how-to/honor-view-20-ota-march-patch-t3909075/page12). I downloaded the 9.0.1.137 firmware, since this corresponds to the one currently installed on my phone.
In summary:
I extracted recovery_ramdis.img from the update.app with the huawei extractor. In order to see this image file, I had to uncheck "verify header checksum" under settings->extract.
I then transferred this file to my phone (download folder), downloaded newest magisk manager and installed it. I then pushed INSTALL next to magisk (which was not installed of course), Install again and then Patch boot image file. Choose your transferred recovery_ramdis.img and go ahead. Transfer patched file (now called patched_boot.img) back to PC.
For the next step, bootloader has to be unlocked already! Turn on "Enable OEM unlock" and "USB debugging" in the developer options and reboot to fastboot. Open ADB as usual and connect cable to phone. Type "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk *path to patched_boot.img*" and wait for success.
A few things to keep in mind:
-Had a bootloop with the newest version of the viper4android module!
-The root was done without custom recovery, therefore a magisk module leading to a bootloop requires you to factory reset and do everything again if you want root to work (at least i couldn't get it to work again by reflashing orginial recovery_ramdis.img followed by patched_boot.img).
-For rooting to work you have to boot phone to recovery (in this case resulting in a "normal boot"). This means pressing volume up and holding it when booting the phone. For restart you could use an app which lets you boot to recovery automatically.
-While the above my sound annoying, permanently gives you the chance to boot you phone unrooted. This is nice, especially when you have a bootloop due to a magisk module (which I had).
-According to the first link, you could install a custom recovery into the second recovery partition of Huawei/Honor devices (erecovery_ramdis). there is no official twrp available for Honor View 20 at the moment.
-After unlocking my bootloader (see post above) I had "device not verified" in google play store. After rooting, my device is verified again

I get recovery-ramdisk from firmware PCT-AL10 9.0.1.129 . my phone is on version 9.0.1.144 but it worked:good:
After root i can not auto update software. 9.0.1.166 version is seen on ota but after download it says update is unsuccessful. Do you have any suggestion?
I think thats to be expected when rooted. Go for manual update I guess (https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-view-20/how-to/honor-view-20-ota-march-patch-t3909075/page12). Personally I wouldn't bother with every update unless theres interesting new features and/or security updates. just to be on the safe side I would reflash the original recovery_ramdisk before updating! And backup your data!

Hello !
Unless I'm mistaken, the View20 must be able to use nano sd cards (NM Card)

LOSQ/LiR - LineageOS 17.1/18.1-UNOFFICIAL-GSI

For those who want to try LineageOS 17.1/18.1-UNOFFICIAL-GSI . IMO stable enough to be used as your daily driver.
LOSQ/LiR is not developed nor maintained by me!
Credits: @eremitein
Requirements: basically full stock EMUI 9.1, with stock recovery_ramdisk.
Note: I prefer to install in fastboot mode, it's quick, easy and most importantly, safe.
IMPORTANT! Before booting up the ROM, you will need to perform a factory reset in stock recovery!
Install arm64-b.. only!
1. LOSQ - LineageOS 17.1-[10]-unofficial-GSI
with the GAPPS
GAPPS
without GAPPS
Vanilla

Download
2. Extract the ROM .img file from the compressed file.
3. Flash extracted losq/lir... .img from fastboot , use command
fastboot flash system (file_name).img
4. Run command fastboot reboot, unplug your phone, when appears on screen yellow warning, press and hold for 3 sec Volume Up . In eRecovery select 'Wipe data/factory reset'.Reboot .

Magisk root (23.0):
(Note: If you don't plan to use TWRP, simply install patched Recovery_ramdisk in fastboot mode. Run command
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk magisk_patched-23.img ),
- download and install Magisk manager-23.apk:
https://mega.nz/file/go0m2RiR#M5UTv6FPjWPtDaGPr-u2tpJMCwdf8uwnniZg69LiGfw
- Install TWRP-9.1
https://mega.nz/#!tkcTlATI!A8UJGPBGtxJbLcUOJoxCGJj5PFZXzCnjbb3OkwqKTP8
over eRecovery (it's necessary on EMUI 9.1):
- copy TWRP file to the SD card, and also copy to the SD card patched Recovery_ramdisk:
https://mega.nz/file/lp1kHLxJ#htCMaPjSsg_dy0w_jNOft-t_DZRAPwhOvwy_Wr2cjX8
- flash TWRP - run command
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk (TWRP's_name).img
- boot into TWRP, select storage - SD Card, select "Install image", find TWRP-9.1.img file and mark eRecovery, swipe. Go back, find magisk_patched-23.img file, mark Recovery, swipe. Go back to the TWRP's main menu, select Reboot > Recovery. Done.
Note: you then need to boot your phone every time via Recovery. It'll boot into android as normal but with root.
( Note: for those who want keep the erecovery as a fail-safe:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-erecovery-with-twrp-installed-on-it.4357127/ )
To remove Magisk reinstall stock recovery_ramdisk via TWRP or fastboot , download Here
How to boot into TWRP:
- Turn off your phone, connect to the PC (or charger), then press and hold Power + Volume Up, device will reboot into eRecovery (= TWRP).
How to boot into patched Recovery :
- Restart your phone, when appears the yellow warning on the screen, press and hold Volume Up for ~ 2 sec,
release the button and immediately press and hold again for ~ 2 sec. Repeat it 6-7 times, the device will reboot into Stock Recovery (you can perform Wipe cache or Factory reset).

I have tried this rom - but without the magisk as I don't really care for root.. However.. This rom still has one big missing feature.. Fingerprint unlock. I can go to register fingerprint. Add the finger multible times to complete the circle.. however.. every time it misses just the last part - it will fail. If anyone has a fix for this I would be happy to use this as my daily driver as it works just fine.

I'm afraid you're wrong... It works perfectly for me.
Can confirm that so far everything works flawless. Fingerprint sensor is working on the phone too.
Thank you Alf.
Just two additional questions:
How will updates be perform in future?
How to switch from LOS 16 to this rom - the other P20 lite we have is still on v.16?
Cheers

Install Service ROM using dload method (9.1.0.132 recomm.) , then you can safely flash 17.1 GSI. Dload method will erase all your data and will lock the BL again!

Ugh, is there a way to install emui 9 without it locking my bootloader? I unlocked my bootloader via the @huaweihax method.

OTA update, via HiSuite, you can try also through eRecovery ...
make sure to have the stock recovery flash.

Idk how huaweihax method works, but the BL unlock
code is permanent, it wont expire, you use the same bootloader code to unlock if your device is relocked.
Btw, with EMUI 8 installed with May 2018 security patch you should be able to use DC-Unlocker or hcu-client to get BL unlock code for 4euros.
Or, you can also unlock BL for free using
PotatoNV method

There's no way I'm paying for unlocking!
The huaweihax method works this way: you give some information about your device and you flash a slock file to the ramdisk. It unlocks your phone.
To prevent EMUI 9 from re-locking your device, you can flash a zip file to have a custom bootloader unlock code.
Btw, I have hyperlinked the thread that describes this in the "thingy" word.
I guess that custom code should work even if my device is re-locked.

Sorry, this is not the DC-Phoenix support chat, let's please remember to keep conversations and comments in this thread about LOSQ - LineageOS 17.1, thanks...
Thanks @-Alf-
I followed all your advice in the LOS 16 thread to get 16 installed, but couldn't get gapps to work. So I thought lemme give LOS 17 a shot since it includes gapps, and it works great! However I get the same issue with fingerprint as @whitetigerdk. During fingerprint enrolment it works up until the last time you have to finger it, after which I get popup "Enrolment was not completed: Fingerprint enrolment didn't work. Try again or use a different finger". I can provide a screenshot but it's literally just that text.
Apart from that everything seems to work fine. Haven't installed magisk yet, will do that next.

Most of custom ROMs require lower build number, on latest build number may or may not work correctly.
If you have followed this guide to the letter and it didn't work, i'm afraid I cant help you .
I've not had any major issue with this LineageOS.
P.S.:
If all this has worked on my device, it does not mean that it goes with everyone else, and vice versa (we are talking about Huawei devices ).
@-Alf- Thanks, that might be it. I'm on firmware 9.1.0.200(C185E4R1P8T8) as that was the recommended one for LOS 16. Let me give it a shot with 132, will update with results.
Edit: With "Clean OS" I assume you mean a clean install of the stock ROM? My approach is to install 132 via dload, unlock bootloader, then follow your installation steps.

Yes, but I'm afraid there's no .132 build number for region C185 on androidhost.ru
IMO you can get it via paid service only, for 17euros , hm...look here
.132
The difference between .132 and .200 is google patch - may 2019 vs. july 2019.

What about this one? http://huawei-firmware.com/rom/huawei-p20-lite/ane-lx1/42056
It doesn't have a dload folder, it's just the update.zip basically, so I'm not sure how to flash it only unlocked my phone yesterday, not used to huawei roms yet.
Edit: they explain how here, you create the dload folder manually.

What do you mean really reliable when the guide is for Android 6? Is there a way to flash the 132 ROM from huawei-firmware?
Also, magisk installation worked perfectly by following your instructions. I can pass safety net with the universal safetynet fix module and got google play certification with the props module.
Is there a way to now boot into TWRP (erecovery)? Currently when booting it doesn't show the option to hold volume up to enter erecovery, it immediately says your phone is booting now. The only way to get into TWRP is to fastboot flash recovery twrp, do stuff there, then flash magisk_patched-ane-v21 over recovery and reboot.
Edit: I captured a logcat while getting the fingerprint enrollment error, there are some exceptions about the enrollment, not sure if that could mean something to the devs to help fix it?

Oops I thought I mentioned it in my post, mea culpa.
You have two options:
1. Turn off phone, connect to PC (or charger), then pres and hold Power + Volume Up, device will reboot into eRecovery (= TWRP).
2. Restart phone, when appears the yellow warning on screen, press Volume up, hold for ~ 2 sec,
release the button and immediately press and hold again for 2 sec, repeat it 6-7 times, the device will reboot into Stock Recovery , then you can do normal restart - Reboot system now.
