Did anyone else get their free Google home mini - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Received an email yesterday informing be that since I had purchased a Pixel 2, I was eligible for a complimentary home mini. Chose the coral over, even though it doesn't match anything in the house. Good way for Google to start the robot home invasion.

I think most people got one. Here in the UK I think the promotion is still ongoing.
I tried to refuse it, on the grounds that I had no use for it so it was just a waste of resources to send it to me, but that was clearly too complicated a concept for the corporations. I ended up giving it away to a local charity to use as a raffle prize.

Received mine in October. I already had one already and 3 Echo dots. Use it for switches and general info. Now use the Home Mini's about 90% of the time and will be removing the Echo dots eventually.
As for Home invasion?? I have watched traffic from both the echo dots and the home mini's and I don't see anything not expected.
They do a significantly less than your smartphone does and you most likely take that everywhere you go, including your house.

It listens for the keywords before it acts. It doesn't listen or communicate until then

Yes I received one too. I believe they decided to do this as other shops were offering it free with each purchase of a. Pixel 2

Push to Talk For ANDROID!

TiKL for Android is a Push to Talk app that uses Voip. Just found this today on the market and have been playing around with it with some friends. Has great potential! I cant post links yet, (if someone could help me out and post one) just do a search for TiKL in the market.
Great app love it has g great potential. Love waking my wife up in the mornings with it. Needs a contacts widget so all you have to so is click on their person to chirp them

Ok
someone please explain to me the usefulness of push to talk. I really never got it, and seriously want to understand how it is used and why it's different than calling someone? And I'm not being sarcastic. REALLY I AM NOT!
Is it just a "doesn't cost minutes" thing? Just a real world scenario where you would use this instead of calling would be great.
We run UPS and Generator tests at my job and there are like 5 of us that need to stay in constant contact with each other while the tests are going on. Some of us are on the first floor of the building, some are on the fourth floor and its way easier to just push to talk rather than dialing every time.

two things it needs
1. widget
2. some type of contact list instead of the pop down menu
thanks OP!!!!!!!!!
any way for me and my buddy to communicate with push to talk? he is on WM and IM on android.
Not at the moment. TiKL is only for android.

Worth it to buy?

So I have that urge to buy something new and I've stumbled across the sony SW2 in my looking around and I was wondering if this would be worth it to buy? Those of you who have had one for a while, do you think I should get one?
I think it all depends on its use per the individual, it is very handy for me when I'm at work and in a meeting I can see who's calling and read messages etc and also when I'm on my motorbike also saves me having to pull out my phone to see whoa calling messages etc. I would say though if you have a Samsung phone then probably have a look at the gear

If you can get it for less than $150, that's a decent price... However, there's LG's and Moto's watches coming out this summer if you can wait a few months - but those are rumored to be around $250.

If you need a device to remote control your smartphone, then yes you should get it. If you are happy just taking your phone out of your pocket and using it, then you dont need the Sony Smartwatch 2. It is not an indepedent device. It can do almost nothing by itself, it is 99% dependent on your phone.
The best way to describe it is that it is a second screen to your smartphone. To be able to use it you must have your smartphone on you, at all times. It not autonomous working at all.
Hi all,
can this Sony SW2 keep the time by itself if I go running to the park and leave my phone at home? Just keep the time.
I know it would be more useful to take the phone in my pocket and probably try to have an Endomondo's Sports Tracker widget on the smartwatch.. does anyone knows about a good sports tracking app like Endomondo's ?
Thanks.
Sure, why not. It's only money.
I have had mine for 8 months and love it. I had not worn a watch in perhaps 20 years. (I'm a reformed pocket watch user.) If you like to know who is emailing and testing when it happens, covertly, it is great. There are other things it is great at too, but those are the #1 use. I like the color screen v.s. monochrome screens, but battery life suffers. Price is reasonable, relatively speaking, but if you are an Android user and have a little more $$, I'd wait until summer to see what the new Google based watches bring. They appear to be a step up. The only thing I'd wish for is voice transcription to reply to email or text and I believe that's coming in the Google OS watches.

Yes it can. And your SW2 comes with Runtastic, which is pretty okay for me.
Sw1 can keep time only till it has battery or has not been switched off. If you switch it off or battery finishes, you need to connect it again with your phone to get time.

Not on your Nexus it doesnt..... it doesnt have an answer call button, though theres a fix if you are rooted.
Also it has no speaker or mic so youd need a bt headset. Which can already be used to answer calls.

Because the calling app that Sony offers to you onli offers the 'answer call' button on Sony phones. Unless you move it to the system partition, which requires root.

LOL It's a fair question, I joined this forum when I have a Qtek 2200 (made by HTC and also known under the brands XDA, O2), and after a Qtek 2020i, and used this forum just to get some informations. When this devices become obsolete I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5830 but I didn't like the Froyo GUI so I change to iOS devices that aren't supported here. But since a few months ago I become tired of it, always the same and without big changes, and planned to switch again to android that had a big improvement since froyo and its know more appealing to use.
One of the thing that I found out immediately was the different ROM's available to install, and I have been playing with them in my devices.
So it's natural that now I had reasons to post, to clear my doughts.
I don't use to write just to make number, I hope that you'll be clear.

I see in the call extension app description that "answer call" is for Xperia Only. I have a rooted HTC One M8, but I did not move the app to the system partition (I doubled checked just to be sure); however, I can answer calls with my Sony Smartwatch 2. Not sure if it is because I am rooted or not, but I wanted to pass along my experience with my phone and the call extension app in question.
Rob
I've found that the lack of a 'Call Accept' button is not a major deal breaker for the Call Extension program. Wired or BT headsets have the action button, so the SW2 is still good. PLUS, with the recent upgrades to the core program, it's perfect to setup for a 'idling watch-face' that contains the pertinent information that I need.
Remember, the watch will allow you to tuck the phone back into the pocket or holster and leave it there. I myself enjoy starting an album as I leave the house to catch my bus for work, then just use the SmartMote Extension to change the song or tweak the volume on the sly.
Oh, and with the phone settings extension I found, I can cut the phone's Wi-Fi when I leave a well, so it doesn't draw extra power looking for a connection - without going fully into the watch apps, because it's latext update puts a shortcut directly into the watch-face itself!
Yeah, I'd recommend getting this watch, if you need a new watch. Once you have it, you find reasons to have it.... (Not the least, because it reduces the need to turn on the phone every five minutes to check it.)

Can't believe Verizon is doing this to me!

I am so pissed. Long story short. I ordered the s6 through Verizon, got the phone and it was great until the 10th day. I started having issues. So I told them and they said they'd send me out another. I told then I absolutely do not want a refurbished phone and they guaranteed me it would be a brand new one. Wtf do i get the next day? A refurbished piece of crap that had scratches all over when 3 different reps assured me they'd be sending me a new one. I called them back pissed.
So after hours of talking on the phone I get them to send me a brand new one that would come in the white box. They told me it would arrive on may 29th(which was 10 days away) because they were all on backorder waiting for the shipment from Samsung. So I've literally been calling every few days asking them what the update is and every time a diff rep just tells me that the order is placed and everything but it's still on backorder. This has happened 3+ times now.
It's been 3 weeks now and I just called again and told them this is it I've had enough and the guy tells me for some reason the order never processed because of some terms and conditions crap so he said he has to figure it out with his supervisor. I can't believe this seriously. Are the people at Verizon the dumbest individuals in the world or am I being toyed with here?

I haven't been impressed with Verizon customer service, either. The first phone I got was never activated, and when I called to get it activated, the rep just redid my order and sent me another phone lol. I had to reject the 2nd phone, and I finally spoke to someone that knew what they were talking about.
It seems as though 1 out of every 3 reps know their stuff, the rest have no clue.
I'm still waiting for my $100 port in credit, and I know it won't be on my 3rd billing cycle, so I'll have to call them again :/
Never even talked to a rep. did everything online. Ordered phone on Friday, arrived Sat, activated without doing much other than turning the phone on (SIM card was already installed). I didn't port my number until I checked out the phone and ported the number on Monday morning, took about 20 min and about 1/2 hour after that to get the SMS texting working right.
No communication with a rep at anytime.
Sat night when I realized I already had the latest build (was waiting for an OTA), I rooted the device with PingPongroot. Had to do it twice but it stuck and was very easy. never connected the phone to the computer (yet).

This is literally the only way to do it. Companies like VZ and Comcast intentionally provide sucky service so that you just give up because who wants to spend hours on the phone explaining your problem to people who are intentionally making it harder for you?

Well, maybe back to Android Wear

Just updated my Huawei to AW 1.4 (Marshmallow), and now have calling capabilities on my wrist. For me, this is a high-value feature, and the reason I put the AW watch back in the drawer after 6 weeks with it and went back to Gear, buying a Sport 3G. I've since upgraded to a Classic 3G (Verizon, always hated the swatchy sport) to have calling features again (I've been on Gears since the first one).
No standalone 3G may still send me back to Gear S2 in the next days or week or two, but we'll see. Everything else on the AW platform is so superior (with a few exceptions), and of course "OK Google" -- the functionality, accuracy, etc. of this feature alone is almost enough to keep me from going back. May turn out to be enough.
It's sad. Samsung, IMO, has made a huge strategic error in failing to make S-Voice a higher priority. The customer base has been complaining from the beginning with the first Gear, years ago. Back then, "OK Google" was far more rudimentary, error-prone, etc. In that time, Google has invested enormous resources in making this "personal assistant" actually useful rather than annoying. Something you actually think about invoking to do something, because, like flipping a lightswitch, it "just works".
I think these voice-activated, hands-free "assistant" features are going to become the sine qua non of "wearables" in very short order. Samsung, with their neglect of S-voice are going to find themselves stuck in an uncompetitive posture regardless of how innovative their hardware and UI inventions are. The rotating bezel is cool, and it is a better way to do things than swiping around; however, simply telling your watch what to do while your hands are occupied (like driving) is far, far more useful.
Anyway, I'll post again in a week or so to reflect my plusses/minuses going back... I have a feeling I'll put the S2 back on my wrist, just because of the 3G -- I've come to really depend on that luxury, forgetting my phone somewhat regularly (or deliberately leaving it behind). I created a Tasker task that sends me a notification when the watch disconnects from BT to remind me to forward calls. Works great if I forget my phone. Once the 3/4G AW watches hit the street, I'm gone from Gear. Samsung clearly isn't going to improve S-voice.
Ok good story ,bye ,if you read this, post clips

There are already 4G AW watches.
I am torn, AW is a larger ecosystem, but Tizen is a more robust system, it has actual apps that run independent of the phone (though not as many as I'd like). It's different, but honestly each are good in there own way, it's an opinion as to which is best.

I tried the LG urbane 2 LTE. And it's awful. The gear has much better thought out 3g implementation. Even with Ok google, I returned the LG and went back to my s2.
Well, that didn't take long. One day.
The phone implementation is buggy, and the UI awkward.
I missed the Gear's much more sensible, usable UI for SMS/MMS immediately, the general notification mechanism and UI, and many more usage aspects that are routine every day with a smartwatch.
Then there was the 3G... my Huawei doesn't have a cell radio, so I couldn't compare apples/apples, and unteather. Still, that narrow feature/capability wouldn't be any different -- i.e. being away from the phone. The calling UI operates the same regardless, and that's what I found annoying.
Of course, the digital assistant ("OK Google") was brilliant, almost enough to make me suffer with the other problems. For now, I'll stay with the S2, and see how AW bakes over the next six months. Those damn cards are one of the most annoying "features" of all.
Very interested in the Tasker app you described above. Would you mind sharing the details please?

Yeah, I mentioned this in another thread, and was asked to share.
I need to polish one piece of it before I share (the automatic notification when you're back in BT range to remind you about the Forward All), then I'll zip up the profile and tasks and post it.
Not at the top of my list, though, so don't expect anything for a few days, maybe a week.
That's great, thanks. No tearing hurry, I'm using the Brrr app which does a pretty good job but am interested in other options.
Heard from standalone apps in wear at Google io this week.
It's the same for me. I had aw from the beginning and switched to gear s2 in autumn last year. There are pros and cons in both systems. After a few month now with the gear I feel the urge to go back to wear after the new features where announced this week. I'm probably going to wait till fall when the updates actually hit. And maybe hope to see similar feature like the bezel navigation. I absolutely love this. But also miss the hands free navigation from aw.

It's utterly ridiculous that completely innocuous "internet things" don't simply work anywhere one has an (unrestricted -- think China) internet connection.
It's all about mandarins. They must have control over you simply to have control.
About the timer: There is a rather nice timer app on the watch, and it can easily be invoked via S-Voice. Just say, "set timer 15 minutes", and it will set and start the timer app for 15 minutes.
I use it all the time. No meaningful difference from AW, other than S-Voice is, of course, not as reliable in reading your voice in the first place.
I'm not trying to launch nuclear missiles or solve the national debt from my watch. I want a face that looks like i want it to, the data I need, battery that lasts at least one waking day, and that's about it. And the GS2 does that. Does another? Maybe, but I HAVE the GS2. I've found that the more whistles and bells on anything and the less reliable it is.

I don't get why they can't see that a well functioning S-Voice will make or break wearables for the company. Its that simple.

S-Voice has never worked for me, it always just says "please try again later"
For those of you who have a 3G version of the Gear S2 and don't want to fuss with manually call forwarding anymore, allow me to recommend an option many seem to have forgotten over the last couple of years: Google Voice
I've been using GV for years as the VM on my phone. Now, I have added the Gear S2 3G as another phone on my GV account. This gives two great benefits:
1. Calls automatically forward from phone-to-watch OR watch-to-phone if I don't answer on the originally called device, eliminating the need to enable and disable call forwarding phone-to-watch manually and giving a two-way solution if I leave the watch at home for a change.
2. Gives one unified voicemail box for both my phone and watch numbers. While only a few important people have my watch number for emergency purposes, I don't want people to have to remember multiple numbers to call or worry they are leaving a VM in the "box I rarely check."
To forward the watch's calls, just follow Google Voice's instructions with the manual call forwarding dial codes for your carrier and dial them on your watch AFTER you set the number up in your GV account. And, of course, this is only going to work for those who live in a country GV services (US & Canada, I believe). If you are outside the US & Canada, I'm sorry that I have no similar alternative to offer you.

+1 Im keeping mine. You have more of a chance of dying in a car accident or even being murdered than your Note 7 catching fire. Besides, ALL phones carry a risk. Just google "iphone catches fire" and find the numerous "local" reports. Some even on planes in mid flight. The "National" media won't run these. Wonder why? Make no mistake, this was a targeted attack on Samsung for steadily taking the market away from America's precious Apple and to make way for American juggernaut Google. Btw, you can google "Nexus catches fire", or practically ANY phone model/brand and find recent news reports of said phones burning up. Sorry, I'm not drinking the Kool-aide. Samsung made a kickass phone and I'm not ditching them or the phone because the American media and American mega-corporations don't want them to have the bulk of the cell phone market.

Yep, you can be fined up to $150,00+ USD for each day you have it on your person if you try and fly with it.
Still rockin mine

I didnt want to either but i got an s7e today its running wayyyy smoother
Still have mine, im supposed to be flying in 2 weeks so may switch back to my S4 for that weekend and go back to the note when i get back if they allow me. Hoping they come up with some solution to check the phones so the rest of us dont have to turn it in. I rocked my s4 for 3.5 years and really dont want to go back to it, but the NOTE was the best phone ever and not settling for s7e for next 2 years when S8 will be avail in few months. So pissed!!!!
I bought an S7 Edge off a friend and was going to return my Note to Sprint. Had the 7 Edge for 30 minutes and gave it back to him. There's just nothing like the Note. I'd rather take my chances.

well if you are willing to pay this.
"Now here’s where things get interesting. If a passenger does not comply with the above rules, which is to say that a passenger brings a Note 7 on board and refuses to power it off and store it appropriately, he/she will be subject to a civil penalty of up to $179,933. Additionally, the penalties state that a person violating the above order is also “subject to criminal prosecution” which can result in fines and “imprisonment of up to ten years, or both.”

Then don't fly with a Note 7. I plan to use an old phone for flights and switch back to the Note 7 when I'm back.
I will be waiting this thing out so long as the recall is voluntary, until my phone explodes or the note 8 or an equivalent comes out. I think it's a conspiracy. How could this happen to the best phone ever made. It is a perfect work of art packed with all the best and latest new tech and you mean to tell me that they cut corners on the battery. The battery. I don't think so.

Went to Best Buy tonight (Las Vegas), mobile sales rep stated that Verizon will begin black listing/deactivating their devices soon. Anyone else hear anything like this?
I wouldn't believe what any rep at best buy said.... They told me that I HAD to shut it off and return it right away.... I walked away and laughed and said "why so u can sell me an iphone"
