DRM keys in Sony Xperia smartphones are located in the TA (trim area) partition of the phone.
When unlocking the bootloader, the TA partition gets erased and you lose your phone's unique DRM keys forever unless you backed it up first.
Without the DRM keys you lose a lot of special functionality such as special camera features like BionZ, built-in noise-cancelling, X-Reality engine, Bravia engine, Track ID, Miracast etc...

Some content on your device may also be invalidated and cannot be accessed any more because of invalid DRM security keys. This includes content that you may have purchased through a 3rd party vendor and through HTC. HTC devices might have the DRM keys and that partition, but when unlocking you won't lose anything, so you're good to go with unlocking BL and do custom stuff

if you use sony, got to sony forum, afaik there is no real fix for that. there is some work, you can check it in xz premium forum

I have a rooted Z3. On the paper DRM keys should be untouched but I am not impressed with the camera's quality.
I flashed pre rooted rom and subsequent rom updates but wonder if something didn't go wrong along the way.
So, simple question : how can I test the effective presence of DRM keys / make sure the functions that come with it are present on my Z3?

Your DRM keys will be totally intact unless you unlocked the bootloader.
Are you sure? I thought that flashing a full 'home made' pre rooted rom could over right TA partition resulting in useless drm keys... Isn't there some part of the rom that has to be exclude to prevent just that ?

Do you see any difference in camera before and after installing preroot rom?
Having an awesome camera doesn't means awesome photo. There is many other things that makes a photo great.
Composition, subject, correct use of modes or manual settings, white balance...
I for one is not impressed with the stock Sony camera. But granted its much easier and better than other phone cameras available. I'm impressed with its low light capability, speed of autofocus, and all those amazing preprogrammed modes.
I'm no fan of manual control. If I need manual control, I'll need raw as well and for that I bought a dslr..
This Sony camera serves what I need. Quick, Good, camera to catch things at the right time.

Which version Z3 you have and which pre-rooted rom did you flash? The only version that has a locked bootloader is the T-Mobile Variant. And like all the other members stated, you can only lose DRM keys if you unlocked the bootloader. If your bootloader is locked then DRM will be retained even if you rooted and flash a pre-rooted rom.
I have a D6603 with current stock rom pre rooted. BL is locked.
Regards to camera (and not my photos) i am disappointed. I find the white balance dull/approximate, low light noisy and the overall sharpness quite bad. Hence I wondered if it was due to some messing about with drm keys...

To truly check open the phone dialer and type *#*#7378423#*#* then navigate to "Service Test" then "Security". If the first three lines says MARLIN [Key OK][Active], CKB [Key OK][Active], WIDEVINE [Key OK][Active] then your drm keys are intact, if it says unknown then the drm keys are gone.
All OK active under security test, so I guess I am fine.

This means that you are able to unlock the bootloader but that it is currently locked.
Unless the bootloader has been unlocked the DRM keys are intact

Many THX. I feel it uncommon because D6616 bootloader is told that cannot be unlockable and the keys has "unknown error".

If the bootloader was not able to be unlocked it would say
Bootloader unlock allowed:No
If it says bootloader unlock allowed:yes
then it can be
Ok sorry for idiotic question, but what are DRM and why do i need them? i backed them up on start before rooting, now i have tested few roms and stuff. But do i need to restore DRM for better photos or something? Or os not possible to restore DRM on costum rom. Its my first sony in years
I don't know that much on DRM and Development, I'm just a passionate guy, so what am gonna say is perhaps wrong so dont blame me
DRM (Digital Right Management) are keys used to "protect" the phone.
Those keys are sets by the firm (In this case SONY)
To enable some functions on the phone.
When you buy a new phone, DRM are already set up and everything works fine, but some phone functions require those keys to work (on the Z5 x-realty photos, bravia engine display needs them to work) .
If you unlock your bootloader, you delete by the same time those key located on the TA partition and so, X reality and Bravia cease to work,
I know that on the Samsung devices the fingerprint sensor is completely disabled if you lost DRM I don't know if it's the same on the Z5.
Once deleted you can't recover them, they're lost for ever, even if you relock your bootloader !
Actually I don't know if you can recover the keys if you have backed up your TA partition, but according to what I've read you can't, BUT you can emulate them.
DRM aren't only for phone, you can find some in video games protections, computer, or that kind of stuff
So is missing bravia noticable on phone?
Actually I can't answer, I'm waiting for a locked bootloader root in order to keep the originals DRM.
Guess you should ask someone who has unlocked his bootloader and lost DRM to see if there are some noticeable changes?
I don't see a big difference regarding X-Reality, but where there's a big difference is in the photos taken without the DRM keys.

I've got my XZ since one week now, and I'm missing the possibilities of rooting my device.
My Z2 was LB, so I never could ever try to unlock my bootloader. therefore, I don't know anything about it.
I've read a lot of thread here and there, and some points are not that clear to me.
Will the procedure of unlocking the bootloader erase everything in the phone (like photos, contacts, etc...)?
Unlocking the bootloader will kill the DRM keys forever, if I understood well. but flashing Androplus Kernel will recover them, right?
Is it possible to relock the booltloader after? if yes, will the DRM keys be restored?
Last thing, to be sure of what I should do.
1-unlock the bootloader with IMEI via sony site.
2-install TWRP via adb command
3-flash Androplus kernel.
Am I right, or do I miss something?

Hey sensei_sai,
Im unsure if unlocking will erase your data but its always best to backup everything in the internal memory just in case something goes wrong.
Androplus will NOT recover your DRM keys but kernels with DRM fixes try to replicate the features that are permanently lost as a result of unlocking your boot-loader.
In the future it may be possible for you to re-lock the boot-loader but even then this wont restore DRM keys, the only way to restore DRM keys would be to back up your TA partition (This contains your DRM keys) before you unlock your boot-loader but to do this you need root access with your boot-loader still locked.
How to backup TA
Unfortunately at this time nobody has figured out a way to get root with a locked boot-loader although a newly found exploit (Dirty cow) may help us do this very soon so if you care about re-locking and keeping your DRM keys I advise waiting until a locked boot-loader root solution is around!

Too bad for the TA partition.
So we have two possibilities. Take the risk of loose some features forever, but benefit of the root or wait till someone make some magic to use an exploit to obtain root without unlocking the bootloader.
Risk and go... Or wait and safe... Dilemma...

I think that the era of DRM lock is over, we've been using DRM fixes for all the latest xperia phones, the dirty cow is a bad exploit and it's more dangerous than useful.
I was unsure about unlocking the bootloader but now that I did it, I rooted and I regret nothing, the only downside of unlocking is the warranty loss, but who cares as long as the phone doesn't magically explode.

Good news is that there are work-arounds The best solution is to downgrade to MM with flashtool before unlocking and backup your TA partition and keys. Then you can use TA POC tool to inject your TA and modify the stock kernel to keep your bootloader unlocked with all the features. You can also restore the TA partition if you ever need warranty support, and the bootloader will relock like you never unlocked it
If it's too late for you to backup the DRM keys there are kernels that include DRM-FIX, you'll get pretty much all the functionality back, but your unique keys will be lost forever and warranty too.

XZ has DRM FIX in KERNEL LEVEL so even when drmkeys are LOST you can MOCK it and ALL PREMIUM FEATURES will WORK!
you can however
1. downgrade XZ on Android 6 ( MM ) and user UNIVERSAL TA BACKUP V2 script (AKA dirtycow scrip) to EXTRACT drm keys ( A file with .img extension having filesize approx 2mb )

I unlocked the bootloader yesterday and checked for the drm key in the hidden menu.. and I found out that anything was changed... =)
EDIT:
unexpectedly I notice that the booloader was not unlocked when I tried to install the twrp recovery. Doing again the oem unlock results in DRM Keys LOST... sorry for the inconvenience

If it was lost before I do'n't know because I bought the phone like new but the drm keys was provisioned and in other threads I read that this mean the drm keys are still there.. Of course the camera quality still is the same but sony removed this "function" (and for "this function" I mean the fact that if the drm keys are lost your camera won't works) with Android 9 and I already tested this with the XZ1 compact.

I didn't say that.. I said that unlocking bootloader on Android 11 on my XZ2 compact didmn't break the camera and seems that the drm keys are still there. Furthermore Sony has removed the drm keys camera dependency since Android 9, so if you run Android 9 or newer you camera will still work even if you will unlock the bootloader.

I don't know if the keys still remain there after flashing custom roms... I think that they will be wipe because when you flash a rom you need to wipe everything but you can make a backup before doing some destructive operation. But I'm not sure about the backup and other stuff to preserve the drm keys...

Uhm, how slow is capturing photos after unlocking the bootloader? I read somewhere that it becomes much slower. And that super slowmo video doesn't work after unlocking. Could you confirm that, or did it only happen on android 9 or older firmware?
