Recovery not working - MTCD Android Head Units Q&A

Hi,
after flashing a custom ROM my recovery is not working. The ROM is working good but when i try to access to recovery it appears a black screen and nothing else, so i can't flash any other ROM. How can I flash the recovery so it works again?
I tryied to make and update from settings (the nupdate.img) but again it reboots to recovery and the black screen appears.
Thanks

the file is "update.img" not nupdate.img

I solved that:
In a terminal type (you must be root):
su
dd if=/storage/ext_sd/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 (you must replace mmcblk0p4 with your recovery partition)
To obtain recovery.img i unpacked any PX3 ROM (with imgrepackerrk tool)
To know which partition recovery is i did:
ls -la /dev/block/platform/emmc/by-name
(and you can see a line with recovery partition)

Trying to flash an insecure boot.img, no luck.

I am desperately trying flash an insecure boot image on my TF300T, and I am just about at my wit's end. I have gone through the following process. (this is on a .29 TF300T btw)
Unlocked my TF300T with the ASUS tool, and then flashed CWM and got root using this guide.
Obtained .29 US firmware zip from the ASUS website.
Unzipped the "blob" file and then extracted all of the firmware components from it using BlobTools.
Renamed blob.LNX (one of the extracted files which is apparently the boot image) to boot.img for convenience.
Split boot.img into kernel and ramdisk using this set of scripts made for that purpose.
Changed the ro.secure=1 line in default.prop to ro.secure=0.
Packed everything back up again using that set of scripts.
flashed my new boot.img using the line fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash boot boot_new.img (boot_new.img is generated upon repacking)
and finally, I run fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot only to find upon booting that absolutely nothing has changed! adbshell getprop ro.secure still gives a 1! I'm almost positive that I've done this all correctly, as I was able to get an insecure boot image onto a kindle fire just a few days ago. Could anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Please
One thing to note, for some reason I could not run fastboot -i 0x0B05 boot boot_new.img to try out the new boot image as it would cause fastboot to give me an error and a red line of text to appear on the TF300T's screen detailing something about it being unable to find the command. Perhaps that is related to my problem?
I'd try taking the 'boot.img' file and putting back to simply 'blob' with no extension, then flashing via ADB or terminal emulator with root.
Code:
adb push blob /sdcard/ (Just place on root of Internal Storage if using term emulator or have easy MTP access. )
adb shell (Don't need if using emulator)
su (Give ROOT permission)
dd if=/sdcard/blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
reboot
See if that'll flash it for you.
"dd if=/sdcard/blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4" This part I am NOT 100% sure about, you'll need the TF300's partition table, I know mmcblk0p4 is the Staging partition on the TF101, but not sure if it's the same on the TF300, just replace mmcblk0p4 with the STAGING partition label
Hope it helped.
Needs Root and BusyBox installed.

Whoa! You don't delete a recovery Just install TWRP and it will overwrite CWM.
Follow the instructions in the TWRP thread using goomanager or download the CORRECT version for your device form the teamwin web site and use the following from a PC
rename the downloaded file to twrp.blob and reboot to the bootloader / fastboot screen
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot
or from a terminal emulator on the device:
Save it to the root of your /sdcard directly (internal memory only) and rename it to twrp.blob
Launch terminal emulator or connect to your computer and open an adb shell, then type the following:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Then reboot to complete installation.

You can just flash the update file from TWRP. You will loose your custom recovery and root if you flash the stock rom. So you would have to re-install TWRP and root again.
If you come from any kind of custom rom it's highly recommended to do a clean install of the stock rom. Wipe everything, don't restore apps from a backup (their data should be ok to restore), install all your apps from the Play Store.

[HOWTO] Unlocking i9505G bootloader

This will Wipe every thing on the internal storage SO BACKUP your stuff on the SD card and maybe the onto computer too
This is for the Google edition of the Galaxy S4
Go To setting / about phone /
Tap "Build Number" 7 times
Go back to Main Settings Menu and under now shown "Developer Options" enable "USB debugging"
Download this
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html#download
extract to the C drive in the folder adb (you can move it anywhere just adjust the path)
run "SDK Manager.exe"
in the extras select "Google USB Drivers"
click "Install 1 package" and accept license / Install
now go into the device manager on you PC and change the "Samsung ADB driver" to the
"Android Composite ADB Interface" located in this folder
C:\adb\sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
you will have to force that driver to install by selecting it
let it finish installing the drivers
then
unplug and then plug in the USB on the phone
your phone will ask you about "Allow USB debugging?"
check the box "always allow from this computer"
click OK on your phone
If this doesn't work the some thing is wrong with the drivers and reinstall the drivers make sure you select "Android Composite ADB Interface" and not "Android ADB Interface"
Now open up a command prompt (I did this as "run as administrator")
type "cd C:\adb\sdk\platform-tools" (or what ever the directory you extract your files)
enter this command
adb reboot bootloader <enter>
Once in bootloader,
In the command prompt type:
fastboot oem unlock <enter>
It will ask you to unlock you phone and this may void you warranty
Use the volume buttons to change to yes and the power button as enter
At this point everything gets wiped on your phone
The phone rebooted back into bootloader and it now said "bootloader=unlocked" and the bottom left of the screen
Reboot the phone and the unlock icon will appear on the 1st Google screen.
the phone will boot into android like it was new
I have not done any ODIN on my phone so i don't know how this affect it
I am trying to avoid ODIN and get the phone rooted and have a custom recovery on it.
I just did this on my phone and typed this up i think everything is accurate let me know if i need to adjust anything.
fyi the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" don't work because the system is still secure boot enable.
Thanks and Questions
Thanks. Could you please tell where you found this info?
Also, I'm not that experienced and don't understand why this is necessary. Don't our GT-i9505G phones come with unlocked boot loader?

It still needs to perform fastboot oem unlock just like nexus device does
Sent using GT-i9505~
This is what i did on my galaxy nexus device (nexus 3) and my friend nexus one
I made this from my notes of the old devices
my experience is that i could mess up my phone and lock me out of it it, so i wanted to be sure i could fix it, that is why i did this
I did not try to use fastboot beforehand, so it could work.
but i have a feeling that the ODIN flash changed the bootloader (probably not)
but i have been screwed buy a odin flash messing with the bootloader on the vibrant( but for some reason there looked to be 3 bootloader on that device)
if some one want to try it
just put the ClockworkMod 6.0.3.3 recovery file the
C:\adb\sdk\platform-tools
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot recovery.img
this dose take 1 minute after the file is sent to reboot and load
I have tried TWRP but it don't load past the first screen.
This just boots into the file and doesn't change anything
access to the sd cards don't work
I am tempted to flash ClockworkMod but i would like to pull a copy of the recovery first.
BTW after paying $700 for a phone i want to be sure to be able to reinstall the OS, like on a PC.

Maybe you can do a full dump for the community.
before you install custom recovery, I'd like to ask if you could do complete system dump of your device, including stock recovery (recovery.img), stock bootloader (boot.img) and system.img . It would be a big help to the community. You can do it simple after rooting with for example Motochopper exploit (described here http://whatswithtech.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s4/ )
Then something like this:
Code:
for gaining root access type: su
then:
copy BOOT -> dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p20 of=/sdcard/boot.img bs=4096
copy HIDDEN -> dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p27 of=/sdcard/hidden.img bs=4096
copy PARAM -> dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p19 of=/sdcard/param.bin bs=4096
copy RECOVERY -> dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21 of=/sdcard/recovery.img bs=4096
copy SYSTEM -> dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p16 of=/sdcard/system.img bs=4096
Thanks a lot!
System Dump
Plus One on the system dump. There are a lot of knowledgeable people waiting to help as soon as they have this. I don't know enough to do it and did try CWM (which doesn't work, by the way.)
Hope you are able to help. Thanks

cool thank i was looking for that info
Just i couldn't get su to work in adb
I have been able to get Supersu (also tried superuser) on the phone but it complains about the su binaries (busybox in superuser) not being installed i have tried to install it using the market app (which said i am rooted) but i get no popup on the system.
i might try a wipe to see if that fixed it. (i did flash root to the system so it should still be there after a wipe)
first root, then system dump
unless someone knows how to do a system dump without root? or temp root solution.
I will look into the motochopper later today
you don't need "su" to work in adb shell, if you run "adb root" and "adb remount" with a modified adbd binary (inside CWM for example) you will have root access.
pls try out this root zip I just made, maybe it will work

I have root
Thanks broodplank1337
download the root that "broodplank1337" made
and put it in "C:\adb\sdk\platform-tools" (this is my adb.exe folder)
Download ClockworkMod 6.0.3.3 NORMAL from below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359132&highlight=recovery
aka Miustone_CWM_flash-NORMAL.zip
extract the recovery.img to the folder "C:\adb\sdk\platform-tools"
Now open up a command prompt (I did this as "run as administrator")
type "cd C:\adb\sdk\platform-tools" (or what ever the directory you extract your files)
enter this command
adb reboot bootloader <enter>
Once in bootloader,
In the command prompt type:
fastboot boot recovery.img (this takes 1min to load after the file is sent)
This will boot into ClockworkMod
goto "install zip"
goto "install zip from sideload"
in the cmd type
adb sideload root.zip
This sends to the phone and write to the phones Rom.
Now reboot and we have root without ODIN on a I9505G
BTW my file was missing busybox in the xbin i was playing around with "CWM-SuperSU.zip" as a base
It is kind of late so i may have missed some things in this write up.
Now off to the system dump.
I will repost this later as a new post to keep this clean.
ok i had some issues with viewing the files on the phone
i moved them to the sdcard and then pulled them off the card on my pc using a "sd to usb"
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p20 of=/storage/extSdCard/dump/boot.img bs=4096
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p27 of=/storage/extSdCard/dump/hidden.img bs=4096
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p19 of=/storage/extSdCard/dump/param.bin bs=4096

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p16 of=/storage/extSdCard/dump/system.img bs=4096
Is there any other mmcblk0p i should backup
and is there any issues with posting this info on this forum
so far this only has root
i did notice that clockworkmod did give me access to root but i couldn't find the sd card while fastbooting it.
I don't think that the whole bootloader is part of what i backup, I thought there was a sbl.bin that i need too.

I maybe wrong in this, but I have played with fastboot on my ex HTC device. the proper command to flash recovery is
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
the proper command to flash kernel is
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
with
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
, the recovery isn't permanent. it will be only be there for the current session. after rebooting, the stock recovery will overwrite the custom recovery. the same goes to kernel.

NONE of this would pull anything of relation from the I9505G (except System - mmcblk0p16) as our partitions layout is completely different. And more so, it would softbrick your 9505 if you tried flashing.
Check out here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360346 - for a system dump from the i9505G. It has SYSTEM/BOOT/RECOVERY. Param and Hidden are both empty on our phones. This has already been used a couple times to cook roms for other S4 devices.

[Q] CWM Recovery loading at startup and infinite boot animation issue

Hello,
I have nerve-breaking issue with CWM Recovery wich loads up every time i turn on my tablet. So if i wish to restart or to go to CWM i have to hold volume down button to get to bootloader and then select Android to get back to CWM.
So my first question is how do i resolve this problem with constant booting into CWM Recovery? so it would go to recovery only when i select reboot to recovery option in CWM
My next issue is that i have tried to install Ubuntu Touch for TF101 (from ubuntu touch wiki). And in installation guide it says you have to download cm-10.1-20130404-UNOFFICIAL-tf101.zip, and then quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip. The fist zip i got successfully but the second link did not exist, so i checked their repository and found similar zip named saucy-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (i tought it's a newer version) well, then i made data wipe and installed both as stated in guide, i also deleted cache and now when i try to boot my tablet i get to blue spinning CWM logo and it stays there for eternity.
So my second question is how to put some other rom on SD card so i can install another rom? or what i have to do to make Ubuntu Touch work?
My third thing that i noticed (for me it seems wrong) is that with every data wipe it makes new 0/ folder and it keeps everything before wipe in it. I made couple of data wipes and now my data structure looks something like this:
Code:
0/
0/
0/
0/
ASUS/
Alarms/
Albums/
AndroZip/
...other folders (apps and data from stock rom)
Alarms/
Android/
Autodesk/
DCIM/
...other folders (probably from first wipe)
Alarms/
Android/
DCIM/
Downloads/
...other folders (probably from second or third wipe)
legacy/
obb/
obb/
So my third question is if this is the correct data structure because it seems wrong for me? And how to resolve that issue?
My un-educated guess is that all three problems are connected, but my android experience and knowdlege is far to small to have a clue how to begin resolving this twisted problem.
I did some researching and as far it goes with second question i think i have soft-bricked tablet (maybe there is still hope?). So i would like to make it back to original rom or 4.2 jelly bean as i had till now without CWM Recovery issue, if possible of course
(Using ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.3.4 now, and i think at beginning there was ROM Manager used, i bought used tablet)
Please help, thx
The issues are somewhat intertwined, and run back to using CWM 5.8.X.X
The first thing you MUST do is stop the CWM bootloop or you will not be able to install any other ROM or recovery.
If you can boot to a ROM, run a terminal window with SU permissions. If you cannot boot to a ROM, you will need to run from an ADB Shell from a computer when booted to recovery:
Code:
echo boot | dd of/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0
Then reboot normally and your bootloop to CWM should be fixed.
Next, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend upgrading to TWRP 2.3.2.3 or higher. The /0/0/0/0 issue has to do with the new directory structure of Android 4.2 for multi-users. CWM 5.8.X.X cannot handle multi-users properly.
TWRP 2.3.2.3 can be updated using the GooManager app (tap the menu key in the top right and choose Install OpenRecovery Script).
IMO, TWRP is far superior to CWM as it has a file manager and terminal emulator.
I am running SidneyK's TWRP 2.6.3.0. He has a zip that can be flashed from CWM to update, however you have to have the boot loop issue resolved or it will not flash.
Ok, as you said i cannot boot to ROM so i tried with ADB Shell but it says
error: device not found
I have device connected on keyboard dock and cable from dock to pc
Any advices how to reslove that issue? Am i missing some drivers?
In device manager i can see that there is a Transformer device with yellow exclamation. I tried to install drivers from asus webpage but it wont install.
Should i get copy of live linux and try from there?
EDIT:
I got the connection working with ADB Shell but i got this response from code you provided
Code:
~ # echo boot | dd of=dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0
echo boot | dd of=dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0

5+0 records out

Ok now i'm not getting to recovery after restart, but now my tablet is constantly restarting... after Asus eee image there is few secodnds of black screen and then it restarts itself.
Could this be due to my Ubuntu Thouch installation attempt?
Or how can i remove CWM Recovery and install TWRP whitout working ROM on tablet?

Damn, yeah, it should be ...of=dev/block/...
D'OH!
I made few more edits on previous post as i was trying diffrent things. So currently i'm at this position:
Code:

echo boot | dd of=dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0
5+0 records in
5+0 records out

Ok now i'm not getting to recovery after restart, but now my tablet is constantly restarting... after Asus eee logo there is few secodnds of black screen and then it restarts itself.
Could this be due to my Ubuntu Thouch installation attempt or should i push some basic ROM from asus webpage to tablet and replace it with Ubuntu Touch in order to proceed with your instructions?
Or how can i remove CWM Recovery and install TWRP whitout working ROM on tablet?

I made few more edits on previous post as i was trying diffrent things. So currently i'm at this position:
Code:
~ # echo boot | dd of=dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0
echo boot | dd of=dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0
5+0 records in
5+0 records out
5 bytes (5B) copied, 0.006079 seconds, 822B/s
Ok now i'm not getting to recovery after restart, but now my tablet is constantly restarting... after Asus eee logo there is few secodnds of black screen and then it restarts itself.
Could this be due to my Ubuntu Thouch installation attempt or should i push some basic ROM from asus webpage to tablet and replace it with Ubuntu Touch in order to proceed with your instructions?
Or how can i remove CWM Recovery and install TWRP whitout working ROM on tablet?
Thx

There are a few ways.
You can use ADB to push the TWRP.zip from sidneyk's thread in the dev section, install that from the internal storage.
If you have a TF101 (non 3G) you can use one of my repacked EasyFlasher in APX mode to push TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43986513
Another option is to use the .blob file (extracted from the zip) and use adb to install when in CWM recovery.
Push the blob file to the /sdcard/ (called twrp.blob for this example)
Use adb shell and execute:
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Then reboot normally (you need to see the progress indicator complete before rebooting to recovery). What I do is just hold the power button for 10 seconds, once the progress bar completes and it flashes black, hold VOL DOWN until you see the RCK message then tap VOL UP to boot to recovery. With any luck you will see TWRP.
Now i downloaded TWRP 2.6 for TF101 from teamw.in page and i got that twrp.blob file.
Then i executed adb push and it says it successfully copied file
But when i check in adb shell it says i cannot go or look into sdcard.
Am i missing some sort of permissions? or would live linux still be better option and using it with su might help?
Or is it ok and i should just run dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4?
Code:
C:\Program Files\Android\sdk\platform-tools>adb push C:\Users\BoonZ\Downloads\twrp.blob sdcard
1322 KB/s (4984908 bytes in 3.682s)
C:\Program Files\Android\sdk\platform-tools>adb shell
~ # cd sdcard
cd sdcard
/sbin/sh: cd: can't cd to sdcard

Try doing cd /sdcard/
If that does not work, you can also just push the twrp.blob to the / directory and push it from there too.

Ok superb, i have TWRP it says v2.3.2.3
How do i perform something like format or delete everything (so there will be no 0/0/0/ folders or whatsoever) and make my tablet usefull again. I would like to run jellybean again because i'm pretty used to it and delete that Ubunto Touch mess i made. Maybe little help here, so i don't mess anything up?
Thx
Go to the Wipe section.
Wipe the system, davlik and also the cache.
Choose the FORMAT DATA option to completely wipe the /data/ partition (this deletes everything in the /data/media/ aka /sdcard/ directory)
Then I would reboot back to recovery (suggested after a format data) and then install your ROM, applicable GAPPS and kernel if necessary.

Lollipop and TWRP/CWM Recovery Problem

Hi everybody,
I upgraded to Lollipop using the original image. Everything was fine. No problem of any kind. Then I decided to flash the TWRP recovery. At the first run (just after installation) it was there and worked fine (I even made a backup). However, after a reboot when I went to the recovery I found that it was the stock recovery and TWRP was gone. The back up is also gone from my internal storage. The same thing happened when I flashed the latest version of CWM. After a reboot the flashed recovery is gone.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

well, if you used boot instead of flash, itll only boot the recovery for a one time use. flash should make it stick. if not sticking, flash a recovery 2 or 3 times, itll stick eventually.

Thank you, I will try that and then report...
Do you have the latest version of the recovery and the root files?
I used CF Root as Chainfire is the man. I ran it first, then I added the recovery.
It stuck for me.
Remove the scripts etc that install recovery such as inatall-recovery.sh and recovery.boot.p in system and system/bin
Just double check your install-recovery.sh isn't one used to call su because you don't want to remove that if it is.

I flashed ( flash .img ) the recovery 2 or 3 times (even more) but it won't stick. If I do not reboot to system it remains there but as soon as I reboot to system it is gone.

you want to find and rename or delete install-recovery.sh in /system/. thats whats replacing your recovery with stock.

I actually tried that, but had the following problem:
Code:
sudo adb shell mv /system/bin/install-recovery.sh{,.bak}
mv: rename /system/bin/install-recovery.sh to /system/bin/install-recovery.sh.bak: Read-only file system
Do you have an idea how I can come around this issue?
edit: I have figured that out, check post #15

I do not want to root. Is it possible? I just want to have recovery. The problem is remained.

From my understanding you need root to be able to edit files in /system. And in there is the script that "misbehaves" for us.
But I've not quite understood how to come by the read only file system problem

Does it mean that lollipop behaves differently from KitKat? I could have recovery without root there. It stuck at the first flash. But now it is removed every time I boot to the system.
I've ran into the same problem except for me I'm not even getting stock recovery. I don't even have one lol
Okay guys so I figured out how to get it to work (and the recovery to stick!)
First of all, get root. CF Auto root is your friend here.
Now to the problem: The recovery seems to be "reflashed" at every boot. (with an "empty" recovery).
To fix it, boot your phone up and connect it to a pc that has adb installed.
remember to not use sudo under windows, just keep that part out
Code:
sudo adb shell
Now you are on a shell in your android. Since /system is mounted readonly, we first have to remount it:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ su
[email protected]:/ # mount -o rw,remount /system
now change the install script (I just added a .bak to the name so we do not have to delete it) and remount the filesystem and read only again:
Code:
[email protected]:/ # mv /system/bin/install-recovery.sh{,.bak}
[email protected]:/ # mount -o ro,remount /system
Finally flash the recovery as you are used to, it will now stick:
Code:
sudo adb reboot-bootloader
sudo fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-hammerhead.img
sudo fastboot reboot
From here on, you are back in android and your recovery should have sticked
Maybe you should go to system and find a file like this
recover --from--boot
then delete it
Alright, well the above solution definitely helped, but now when i try to enter super su, it tells me the binaries arent updated and the root needs to be done manually.....but didnt i just do this?

You can have a recovery without root. Also root is only "in" android. If your recovery has a file manager, it can edit /system files without root because android isn't running lg, ergo no protection. Its just like taking a hard drive out of a computer and adding it as a 2nd in another computer. You don't need that computers password to get the data.
So flash the ROM and see if you can delete them using the recovery file manager or adb whilst booted into recovery

This was all unnecessary.
boot recovery
Flash ROM
mount system
adb shell
rm /system/blah
That was all.
Re
I had the same problem yesterday except that i was intending to install both root and TWRP recovery. I flashed TWRP and ran it then installed supersu, the root did not work and TWRP was gone after rebooting the system.
I used the "cf auto root" utility made by chainfire. It worked (even though the root has few bugs)
I noticed that cf-auto-root flashed some boot img before installing root and twrp. I think you may want to give it a look.

This is what I did:
Boot to recovery-->
Flashing TWRP img-->
Then immediately going to TWRP file manager-->
Changing install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.old -->
Then immediately made a backup --> reboot to system, turning the cellphone on and off several times
TWRP is there BUT:
The only point is that I cannot see the backup folder in my internal storage. It is clear that it has taken some
space (almost 2GB) but I cannot see the TWRP backup folder.
