ID/name of external SDcard - HTC U11 Life Questions & Answers

With every reboot the SDcard in my U11 life gets another ID/Name like
33304636-2d36-3746-4200-00db95825059
or
41363737-2d45-4144-3200-84bb899f1ab0.
When setting storage settings to the external SDcard in apps an the app uses this ID/name as identifier, after a reboot the app sets the storage settings back to internal storage.
I checked this with 4 different cards. With a 128GB SanDisk extreme, a 64GB Samsung evo+ and a 32GB SanDisk ultra I have this problem.
I also used an older 32GB card from Trancent. This card got a shorter name (only about 10 signs) which didn't change after reboot and all worked fine. But this card is to small and slow.
Where's the difference between these cards in naming scheme?
Does anyone know this problem and has a solution?

Where do you see these SD Card names? When you access through "Settings" then "Memory"?
I have only "SD Card from SanDisk"
Or when you access via a Computer/Notebook?

I see this name in storage settings of some apps. For example in Here WeGo or in Beyond Pod.

Ok, just installed Here we go and have this cryptic name of the external Card as well. First time I'm seeing that.
In Total Commander I see the same cryptic name after the storage Folder like
storage/42463043-2d39-3745-4400-8d8e8d9117a7
In Total. Commander it would offer the option to rename this folder, which I tried, but nothing happened. Didn't even get an Error message but it still won't rename the folder.
Another thing I see, is the Timestamp from the storage card. It shows 1.1.1970 which is always used, if no exact date is found.
Trying to set a different Date caused an error message, saying it is not allowed.
I will try to reformat my SD Card with Windows and check back, if that did any good [emoji4]

Back again. Formatted exFat using Mini Tool Partition Wizard on Win10.
Back into phone. Card is recognized but has a different name as before.
The same behavior, as you mentioned initially.
As I have problems with saving apps on my sd card in general which I posted as a reply in https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3720823
SD card write permissions
I will wait until the Folks from HTC write back if this is a common bug, or something specific.
Somehow I think there are general issues with the U11 Life and SD Cards.
If I find any other solution for the naming issues, I will post it here!

Why? Please don't tell me, this ain't possible anymore with Oreo? [emoji15]
I mean, I can tell Spotify and Apps like the Camera, to use the SD-Card as Memory, but Apps can't be transferred.

Ok, the naming convention might then be so, as long as it doesn't affect the capabilities of an external Card to work as a real extension of the internal memory!

If I need to re-set storage changes in some apps after a reboot, this "feature" in Android O is a fail!
But: I also tested an older Card from Trancent which is too slow and small for my needs. But this Card got a completely different, shorter name, which doesn't change it's name after multiple reboots.
I think the name change does effect only with some card types.

What is actually the real problem behind this issue?
As I have found out, Oreo has a different naming convention for external Cards, but that shouldn't decrease functionality.
I know, it looks weird, but as long as you are able to write onto the card, it is simply an "optical" problem.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/android-8-0-oreo-thoroughly-reviewed/8/
If you scroll down a bit, you'll find The new "SDCardFS"*file system wrapper
There it is being mentioned, that the Naming convention has been changed with Oreo.
Hope that helps.

In about 5 apps I set the storage to external SDcard. When, after a reboot, the card has a different name, the app changes the storage back to internal storage. And then I need to set back the storage settings for all these apps.
OK, there are not really many reboots. And it's not much to do with setting up the storage settings. But when I forget to do that and use for example the camera, I have images in 2 different places.
And in Resilio Sync (maybe you know it) I am not able to change the settings back. In this app I need to completely re-config folder sync settings after a reboot. And then I completely need to re-sync these folders.
In summery this "feature" sucks!

Really wondering, as in my case at least Spotify and the camera don't care about the Card Name, but my problem is, I can't format my card as internal Memory and hence can't move apps there, only tell some Apps they should use the Card as Space for saving.
Bugs me, as I have some bigger Games, which could normally be transferred and some Apps keep getting bigger and bigger with the time.
The system uses 11GB as well, then 32 internal won't be sufficient in the long run

I think this feature bug is fixed with latest update (December security fixes). The card gets a much more shorter name and it doesn't change after reboot.

So, new Atrix 2 today... And some problems as well...

Well, today I got my new Atrix 2. Great cell phone so far. It's my first Android, yay!
But here is my problem:
1. It came with a 2gb SD Card, working and everything, but when I take pictures they go directly to the SD... Does anybody know how do I change it so they go to the internal memory?
2. Some applications seem to install on both, the internal memory and the SD (like Skype or Whatsapp). Somebody knows why?
3. Does anybody know how to access the internal memory at all when connecting the phone to the PC?
Thanks a lot for your help!
P.S: Please, forgive my noob-ines and Language.

1. Can't...internal storage is for apps only
2. Not too sure that's the case....the way you can tell is go to settings/applications/manage applications and click on the "on sdcard" tab, apps will show up here regardless if they are on the sdcard or not so the way to tell if said app is truly installed on the card is to check for a green checkbox on the right hand side next to said app. The box will be there on all of them, but only the one's that have a green check mark are actually installed on the sdcard.
3. Internal storage is for apps only and is not accessible

i don't think motorola meant it to be that way honestly, since all the specs released specifically say 8gb internal storage, which in the smartphone world means you can use it for storage. however, this isn't the case.
i think that they have their mtd/partition tables setup wrong and it could be fixed with an update. however, no one knows when an update will be coming and what changes it will bring. i think motorola has placed all their focus on the razr. so we get the shaft.

Yeah, that's really bad. It's a very capable cell phone, it shouldn't have as many problems as it has (I read a lot about SD card problems, etc) but you are right, they are focusing more on the Razr (as I read in other websites) which is a bummer...

honestly, it doesn't have that many issues. and i think 1 problem is causing multiple issues.
for example, i think that the partitions are not setup correctly, which is causing:
sd rear/write issues
apps 2 sd issues
sdcard pc mounting issues
internal storage being inaccessible issues
app storage memory low notifications
camera write image to sd issue
these are the major issues, but i think they are all tied to 1 single problem. other issues like the can't stop email sync, i can hear myself in my own earpiece and other non-critical problems are just small bugs that can easily be fixed and lived with until said fix.
most other issues i've read seem to either be account related or just user error

If you read the specs it specifically says
Memory (9)
8gb
The footnote for (9) says
Available user memory varies due to the configuration of the phone, which varies by service provider.
Furthermore
Motorola goes on to say that the device does infact have 8gb internal storage, 4 of it is for downloaded apps, the other 4 is for the OS, Webtop application and the other preloaded apps.
https://motorola-global-portal.cust...71812/~/internal-and-external-memory-(atrix-2)
So if Moto is saying the above, it seems to me they did infact mean for it to be like that. Just trying to clear up the misinfo so you guys aren't raising hell about nothing. But I do understand where you guys are coming from, I completely expected to have 8gb of internal storage as well and I think it's bs for Moto to advertise internal storage space by including the portion of it that's not accessible or useable to us. Agreed 100%.

How can I have more storage?

I've got a Sony Xperia m4 aqua (E2303) with 8gb of internal storage with a Sd card of 32gb, but I can't transfer everything to the Sd card.
How can I do it and have 40gb reals (fusionate the internal storage and the Sd card)?
Do I need root?
If it's impossible please also answer.

What do you mean you can't transfer anything to extsdcard?
Are you trying to move apps to SD card?
What android version do you have?
You can't put the 8GB and the 32GB together as one, it doesn't work that way.
If you're trying to do what I think you're trying to do, yes, you will need root to do it.

Adoptable storage option was introduced with the android marshmallow release. Infact you can use internal + external sdcard as one combined storage.
Because mixing the storage, especially with cheap and slow sd cards, may slow down the phone and result in data loss, some OEMs have removed the adoptable storage option.
If you have a rooted phone you can set up the storage manually jusing adb shell.
The guide is written for a Samsung device but should work on any compatible phone with android 6 or higher.

Yeah, I know of adoptable storage, that's the point of asking what android version he have, if he had marshmallow I was going to tell him to use the adoptable storage feature.
But still, the adoptable storage let's you use extsd as internal but it doesn't technically make them "one" seamlessly or without issues in other places, that was my point when I said you they couldn't be made into one.

I didn't mean the physical sense, I might that adoptable storage doesn't act as internal storage in every way, there are some things that don't quite work the same between them.

I wouldn't call it restrictions. By design it's considered to be combined space but in practice, I'm just saying that they aren't used as one issue-lessly, some things don't like playing well with adoptable storage but work just fine with the actual internal. Basically I guess I'm saying it acts as the same but doesn't work as the same. On its face it's the same but under the skin it isn't. Details that don't have much impact on its usage but "can".

How do you know? The latest official release for his phone is 6.0.1.
@daninguno
We produced a bunch of text while discussing the feature itself whitout answering your question.
- If your phone is running Android 6 or newer you can adopt your external sdcard
- If the feature isn't offered in Sony's menu interface you need to root your phone and set up the storage using adb shell following a guide
- class 10 sd card means write speed of at least 10MB/s - your phone's CPU could handle much higher speeds - a faster sd card would be a good option e.g. SanDisk Extreme
- if your sd card bricks you will lose ALL of your data without the possibility to restore it as files may be stored splitted to both storages
- You need to know if you really need the storage. Its only necessary for installing apps. All other files like photos, videos, music, movies can be stored on the ext sd card directly.
- rooting your device will grant you some usefull options if you need and know how to use them but you should spend some hours to understand the process and possible (side-)effects
- rooted or not - delete all non needed crap from your phone. Installing only apps you really need urgently greatly improves the user experience on every phone - nothing is worse than a lagging user interface
- keep in mind that every app that suggerates you to speedup your phone and improve security will do the complete opposite which means slowing it down, and collecting your personal data

Using the method mentioned by me called "adoptable storage" you can't. The full storage capacioty is handled as once.
May I ask if there are specific apps you like to store to the sd card?

I prefer to store in the Sd card the apps that require lower resources and more powerful apps (like games) in the internal storage and have a better performance

With adoptable storage, you won't see a difference in where you store your apps. It treats internal and external as the same thing.
Adoptable storage gives you more space to use as internal but it makes everything a little slower in the process. It doesn't improve performance, it actually loses a bit of performance, it only gives you more internal storage and that's it.

Messing with my icons !!!

Hi,
I have a problem with my icons, everytime I reboot, or turn off and start again my phone a lot of my icons are amess and they are "shining" like a newly installed app.
The problem happened when I was in B381.
I just update to B389, with factory reset, and the problem still there.
Really annoying.
Am I alone with this bug?
Thanks
A screenshot pls?! Or a photo is better
To understand more, so I can help

Yes, I just made two videos, I had to paste links, I couldn't embed them ( if someone could help me on this too... :silly: ) :
- One with partially reorganised icons (only on the first page) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq-4uJTvlY0
- Second, after the normal restart. At the beginning, just after the restart, some icons are missing, then at 0:27 magically disappeared icons reappear, not where they should be, and blink like newly installed apps :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm8Cppe2h5k
Maybe one hint, I Have a 64go SD card installed as adopted storage, is it possible that missing apps at startup could be the apps installed on the sd card? Because the sd card is "mounted" after the internal memory, or because the sd card is too slow, that could cause the problem.
If it so, How could I know where are really installed my apps, and is there a way to change it?
thanks

- Second, after the normal restart. At the beginning, just after the restart, some icons are missing, then at 0:27 magically disappeared icons reappear, not where they should be, and blink like newly installed apps :
Maybe one hint, I Have a 64go SD card installed as adopted storage, is it possible that missing apps at startup could be the apps installed on the sd card? Because the sd card is "mounted" after the internal memory, or because the sd card is too slow, that could cause the problem.
If it so, How could I know where are really installed my apps, and is there a way to change it?
thanks

I too think that sd card makes this problem.

That's even better
I will try different test with my sd card, but not so sure it is really the cause, look at this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSkYvI3mefs
I rebooted without mooving any icons this time, and I noticed that the 3rd icon, first line, first page, "calculatrice plus", and the amazon one on second page, also mooved this time, and wasn't after the previous reboot.... they are on screen right after reboot, and don't blink like the other apps that appear a little bite after reboot... really strange...
That's weird, I don't know what to say.
I can't assist you any further

Strange phone .
Ok, some news, a good and a bad one...
I installed appmgr III, so I can see where my apps are really installed. And everyone bugging on reboot , was installed on the SD card... I moved them to internal, and after many reboots and icons rearrangements, I concluded that was the problem. That's the good news.
The bad news is that I, now, have to move all my apps to internal, so there is not really any advantage using my SD card as adopted storage any more...
Do you think a faster, big brand one, should solve the problem?
Mine is supposed to be a adata 64go class 10, do you know an app to really test it, on my phone?

I don't know if a better SD card will do the trick.
Anyway, good to hear that you solved it

setting up the sd card as adopted, allow system to consider the sd card and internal memory, as a unique big internal memory, so apps can be installed directly by the system anywhere.
I don't think that you need to be rooted for that, but yes I am.
You can still manually move apps between internal and sd with appmngr III (available on the play store), avoiding moving apps with widgets (widgets wont work), or apps that need speedy memory like games that could be slowed. and dont remove the sd card or you will loose everything...
Depending of your system version you could adopt an sd card via menu option, or connecting to a pc, via adb command line, some infos here :

SD card write permissions

It may sound like a silly question, but where I can enable write permissions for SD card to some applications? I'm not able to delete photos from the Camera app, Google Photo, and Open Camera?
There is no possibility to save Apps on the Card, at least I have the same issue.
After choosing "Memory" from any given App, I have no button which says "Change", even if that is mentioned in the official Manual from HTC. I wrote HTC, if this is a wanted behavior, a common bug, or something individual. As I wrote them yesterday, they haven't answered yet.
Has anyone else this issue?
My Specs: Oreo 8.0.0 Patch Level November 2017, European Version (Bob/Austria)
SD Card is a SanDisk Extreme 64GB UHS 3, so that shouldn't pose a problem either.
Even AppMgr III says, there would be Apps which I could transfer over my SD-Card, but not possible, as there is no "Change" button available in the Memory Section from Apps. I tried preinstalled, new ones, nothing worked.
Had the same problem until I formatted the SD card (using the storage settings menu). Now it's working as expected.
I put the SD card from my old phone (Marshmallow) right into the U11 Life - maybe the old DCIM folder was reused and had some weird access permissions or something

Thanks, although my card was in my Vernee Apollo before and it didn't work with, or without formatting.
Had Marshmallow on Apollo as well.
Have meanwhile tried a different card as well.
W/o formatting as well as with. No difference.
According to that and the fact that HTC is not responding on Mail or Live-Chat, I'm thinking of setting back my U11 life to factory settings.
In all Manuals that I could find, it is never being mentioned, that using Sd-Cards as an extended internal memory should oppose any problem, but I still don't have a "Change" Button in the Memory Settings from any given app.
It's annoying, as my free internal memory gets smaller and smaller each day.
I didn't get a new phone to have problems that are pre-marshmellow.
I am aware it is a new phone and not all occuring problems have been solved, but if one doesn't even get suppot from the supplier, it is even more annoying

Made a reset of the Phone and installed all the Apps but still no possibility to transfer Apps. HTC won't answer either. Their support sucks.
Not answering to Live Chat nor Mails.
Have no clue, how to go on. Space on the card will not be sufficient after a while.

Finally got an answer from HTC.
With the HTC U11 Life it is NOT possible to install Apps on the external SD Card.
This seems due to the Android One Conception, at least I'd think so, because Pixel Phones don't support SD Card either.
If it will be changed for App storing in later OTAs they couldn't say anything.
Took them more than 3 weeks to answer a Ticket.
The hotline though was kinda quick, which I wouldn't have expected.
They had a system issue, which caused the Ticket delay, at least the Lady on the Phone said so.
No mentioning about that in the answered ticket.
This fact really sucks, with the 32GB Version.
Is not full yet and with the Stock Cam App one can automatically save Pics on the SD, at least something.
I'll handle it, as I'm not installing tons of huge games and even Spotify can choose the Card as the space for downloaded Songs.

Link2SD in Mobile Legends

Hi guys! Since my phone has really not enough storage for Mobile Legends, (Samsung J2 Prime; SM-G532G), I rely on Link2SD. The app seems to be working as intended to. However, whenever I transfer Mobile Legends to the SD card using Link2SD, it messes up the game. After I transferred, I launched ML and the UI is f'ed up. Lots of missing textures on the UI. I figured that ML looks for its downloaded files on a specific location. But since I transferred it to the SD card, it's confused on where it should look for all of its files that's why it displays missing textures (black boxes). Is there any way to make ML locate its downloaded files on the SD card?
i already tried that and got the same problem. well i guess the only solution is clear some internal storage and install it on your internal storage

What do you mean clear some internal storage? So you're saying I should install it on my default device storage?
EDIT: Nevermind, I get it lol. I'm hoping for someone to tell if there's any other way or software that is able to modify the app's post install location.

If your device has android 6.0 Marshmallow, you should try using the Adoptable Storage feature that is built in to Marshmallow instead of Link2SD. It should work better than Link2SD and you won't have to do anything special because the device will see your internal storage and your external storages one continuous "drive", then it won't matter "where" the app is actually stored because the device will see no difference between the two locations.
