Voice Over Data? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

Is it possible to get the voice over data working on this phone?

Yes. I have it set up. Sprint's calling plus options allow for VOLTE and VOWIFI. They are both pretty nice, with only a few small issues.

So how would I get this going and what are the issues? Thank you.

Oh, never mind. I see they turned the VOD back on for this phone! Sweet! What are the issues though?

The issues I saw were WiFi calling related, not VOLTE. I have my phone set to kill wifi when the phone is in sleep mode. This also happens on a wifi call, but requires that you press the power button to trigger the sleep mode. I havent done a whole lot of experimentation beyond that one instance, though. I have had no issues with VOLTE, however.

How to Use WiFi Calling

I've posted about this throughout the board, but I figured it would be better to make a thread since everyone keeps asking about it.
You'll need to install Google Voice and Hangouts Dialer and set them up. That's it. Just use the Hangouts dialer when making a call and it will do it over WiFi. If you wish to have people call you over WiFi, they'll have to call your Google Voice number.
This is a workaround, so you will be dealing with two numbers. Your carrier assigned number and your GV number. In my GV settings I have chosen to use GV for all calls, now I just have to get the number out to people. The other option is to port your current cell number over to GV, and then you won't have to notify anyone.
The VZW signal at my house is terrible, so this is what I do, and I can tell you it works perfectly. Hope this helps some of you with poor wireless reception.
Cheers.
This works so well, and I love the features that GV offers, call screening, texting from your computer, etc, plus the fact that I plan on buying unlocked phones going forward, that I decided to port my number over to Google Voice. Now it doesn't matter if the phone I buy supports my carriers WiFi calling or vice versa, and I'm only dealing with the one number I've had for years. Couldn't be happier.
Yeah, I just called ATT for help provisioning my daughter in law's replacement iPhone and while I had support on the phone I asked them about Wifi Calling and she said that our phone is not on the BYOD list for wifi calling. She said that very few phones are, it;s pretty much the iPhone 6 and 6s at this time.
Which is weird, because wifi-calling isn't even going through their network. That's the point of wifi calling, that you are using your phone on someone's wifi, so why does AT&T even give a rat's a$$ if you do that? So weird...
So if my network provider has WiFi calling as part of my deal as standard will it work without the work around?

If Wifi calling shows up in the settings menu, you should be all set, and won't need this. However, if you're on Verizon, like me, or AT&T like the poster above, chances are it's not showing up in your settings menu. So, if you want to make calls over Wifi, this is the way to go.
In the UK on EE ,importing it via the outrageous Amazon cyber Monday deal

That's a fine how-do-you. I guess that's another case for GV.

I'm on Verizon so I can't speak for AT&T, but in my case I don't have the option in settings.
Frankly, I don't care about Wifi calling except for that once or twice a year I am both out of cell coverage, but somehow manage to have wifi and need to make a call. With unlimited minutes and data, the need for wifi calling is pretty slim, but it would be nice for that once in a blue moon where you do.
I don't see why AT&T has to "support" the one feature that doesn't go through their network anyway...
After using Google Voice for free home service for about eight years now, I've also gone all in with it on my cell phone. I ported my cell number over to Google Voice, so I don't have to alert anyone of a number change, and I love all the features it offers. I can make/receive calls from my cell, computer, or home phone ( my Wifi ONLY tablet, too, if I want). All using my cell number. The lone home phone will receive calls to both our home phone number and my cell number. Texting can be done from my cell or computer. It offers call screening, call recording, conference calling, visual voicemail, and do not disturb. Finally, it makes all my calls as VOIP (internet) calls. So as long as I have a data signal, be it from my carrier or WiFi, it makes crystal clear calls. I absolutely love it. I wish I had made the switch years ago.

This is Voice over IP (VOIP), not WIFI-Calling. WIFI calling is when your phone can seamlessly transition between cell network and WIFI, so you can receive network calls over wifi.

I don't know. I'll try when I get home tonight.
I can confirm that Wi-Fi calling works for T-Mobile on Oreo beta 1.
I can confirm that too... it works also for t-mobile on 7.1.1 :good:
Works on EE in the UK ,had to switch it on in call settings but working fine

Figured it out... Call *#*#86583#*#* to switch it on, although the confirm msg is a bit confusuing. It talks about disabling the VoLTE check. It works fine now even tho my phone info is still show VoLTE not provisioned

Yes, you may see that unless you have the feature turned on in your VZW account. I was going to try to reply to this yesterday to tell you to dial *#*#VOLTE#*#* to turn off the auto-carrier check which does not work with VZW (they probably do something stupid to make it not work). Then you can toggle on in the mobile options in settings, which works.

This is not working for me. I have the phone active on VZW and I can disable the carrier check using the above dialer code and toggle VoLTE on, but when I try to make any call I get "SERVER ERROR. TRY AGAIN LATER." in the dialer. Confirmed with 2 separate VZW reps that "HD Voice" is enabled on the line. If I toggle VoLTE off, then I can make (presumably regular quality) calls again.
What am I missing?

If you dialed *#*#VOLTE#*#* and then toggled it on manually in your settings, you should be good to go. I have had two different Mix 3 devices and 3 different Mix 2s devices. This worked on ALL of them. The SIM I am using is ancient, it's from my LG G3, hand cut yolo style with a pair of scissors, so I don't think it's the SIM card causing your issue. It may be worth logging in to the VZW website and trying toggling off HD Voice and then toggling it back on.

Network Type/VoLTE Problem

Not sure if I'm being stupid here....and did search but couldn't find anything quite like the issue I've got.....
I live in an area with pretty flaky LTE coverage and because of that, I struggle with VoLTE....basically it's rubbish and can't hold a call very effectively.
On my old 6T I could switch off 4G in the preferred network setting menu thereby forcing the phone to 3G and a circuit switched call.....no problem. With my OP7 Pro, I only have the option in that menu of "4G/3G/2G (Automatic)".
Is that right? Or should I be able to select "3G/2G (Automatic)" like I could on my 6T?
Or is there a way of turning off VoLTE that I haven't found yet?
TIA!

So now you have two issues. You can't change to 2G/3G and you have no VoLTE toggle. You may need to reflash latest Full OTA zip. You should have those options. Are you on T-Mobile?
Through phone app, general settings/sim&network the network type is there. Then sim settings (sim 1) toggle is there

Well, this is weird.....have reset to factory, flashed the 9.5.7 full ROM and still have the same issue.....
I suspect their is a SIM card provisioning flag that the phone is respecting......i.e. EE have said they want the phone to prefer 4G always and therefore can't deactivate the ability to use only 3G/2G.

I am also on EE, EE is the only network in the UK that had volte on by default. I have spoken to them about this same thing and the reason the toggle to switch off volte is missing is because EE can't switch off volte on their end without disabling 4g too. So it's normal if using EE, if you use a sim from Vodafone for instance the volte toggle should reappear in the settings.

OnePlus Google Fi

I am interested in moving away from a Pixel and getting the OnePlus. I am on Google Fi and I understand that moving to something other than a Pixel (or the handful of other "for Fi" phones) will leave me without network switching, and Google says no more WiFi calling or messaging. I am wondering if anyone has gotten the WiFi calling working on OnePlus on Fi, or the messaging. Thanks in advance.

I thought about that too with the switch to RCS messaging. I'd seen threads regarding wifi calling on OnePlus 7 on other sites but nothing about Google Fi, so was hoping someone here had experience. Thanks.

WiFi calling works, and it hasn't on plenty of my devices.
Looks like Fi app has option for wifi calling now, have yet to test it out. No idea if device needs a reset Fi app uninstall to enable the toggle, if it's actually necessary. Installing Fi app always removed the option on activation and defaulted to the wrong apn on the first stable 10 build.
Cheers

No, I have Optimum, I don't know anything about GF.
Custom rom? Are your enhanced network toggle and WiFi priority settings on the device? Fi seems to remove mine upon activation.
No such luck in airplane mode wifi.
Are you getting the VPN as well? None here.
I have to select the second apn after activation , drops mobile signal from tower to tower. Who knows if it's all correct I can't verify with tech support.
Thanks

Asus Zenfone 6Z wifi calling activation

Here are the steps to activate Jio wifi calling on Asus 6Z. You need to enter code *#*#3642623344#*#* and this will activate special menu under Network settings. You need to deactivate Volte/Enhanced calling switch first then activate wifi calling and after getting wifi calling symbol again reactivate Volte switch. You need to repeat this after every restart of phone.

Does your operator support wifi calling? In India this method works perfectly
There are Wifi calling functions in the settings, and the operations described in the videos and posts are also followed. There is no wifi call icon, and there is no attempt to call. Is it not supported in the Hong Kong version? Although this function is available, it is invalid.
Wifi calling already enabled on this Android Q, no need to d this..I am already using it
dial *#*#4636#*#* you will easily get WiFi enabled service
Does it really work though? After doing this, it refuses to make a call if you say wifi calling only which makes me think it still needs the mobile carrier to have a signal for calls.
Service is t-mobile fyi.
It is working flawlessly in India on Jio network. I have demonstrated in Video also

It only works in India (maybe some other places?). They don't seem to care about the US.
According to one of the mods on the Zenfone forum:
"When it comes to features like VoWiFi, VoLTE and so on. It's about testing, paying fees and signing contracts."
I don't think they care enough about the US (they don't really push the phone here) to pay the money. Don't hold your breath. Probably need to go custom ROM.
Custom ROMs didn't allow it to work on TMobile either. Glad some can actually use it though.
Volte doesn't work in the USA
