nexus 5 stucked on google screen and twrp startup failure - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, this is my first time on xda and I'm sorry if I'm doing something wrong here. I'm using nexus 5 since last 3 years and I was thinking of rooting it cause there is no official update after 6.0.1. so, I unlocked the bootloader installed twrp recovery and when I tried opening the custom recovery for the first time ever and it opened with some loading screen for 3-4 seconds then turned off and got stuck on the google screen and after 2-3 seconds it starts again. I searched everywhere but there was nothing like my problem. Now I don't know what to do cause I can't even open the custom recovery to wipe the data.
can anyone help me out in this situation?
thanks

Thank you so much for your help but it took me no where. I tried cleaning the data and cache and now im stucked in animation loop. Lol

You flashed twrp using fast boot commands?
After flashing twrp, did you boot into twrp from the fast boot screen?

This is called a boot loop.

First off I'd like to know what did you do to unlock your bootloader? What version of TWRP did you use? Are you sure it was for the right device?
But what you're in is called a boot loop, which is the result of a error in the OS. If it's still doing this what I want you to do is wait until it is shut down then hold power + VOL Up + VOL Down and wait until it brings up the bootloader (if it does at all.) If you access that hit the VOL Down button twice to open recovery mode. If it tries to enter the TWRP custom recovery and you get that error again, I can't help ya. If it enters the stock recovery you're golden. Hit the VOL down button until you're on the wipe data/factory reset and hit the power button. This should clear out your phone. Hope this helps.

nexus 5 stuck booting

I received my nexus 5 today. Unlocked the bootloader. Tried to install twrp. Gave up and decided to put it back to stock using multitool kit. Toolkit showed as every thing completed successfully but the phone doesn't get past the nexus boot screen. I can boot into the bootloader but that's it. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Same happened to me after unlocking the bootloader. Here's what you need to do.
Boot into the bootloader and enter recovery.
Press and hold power and quickly press volume up, that will open the menu.
Wipe data/factory reset.
The phone will reboot and you should be good to go.

Press and hold Power + Volume Up + Volume Down all at the same time. It will power down the device (it sometimes takes a while, so keep holding down the buttons for at least 10 seconds). Then Power + Volume Down to boot into recovery.

You have the stock recovery on your phone, not team win. You say you've done a factory reset in the recovery? Try that again first. If that doesn't work then flash the factory image.

You should explain how the problem happened. Was it by itself? Which Rom are you using?
You can flash a Rom or use this link they posted above http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701/post47156064 to flash Factory images doing method 1. Report back.

Urgent help needed please, Bricked device ?

URGENT HELP NEEDED PLEASE;
Can you please help my buddy Tyler, he just got the T-Mobile Note 5, and he rooted it, and installed TWRP Recovery, and flashed a ROM for the first time, but he's afraid he may have bricked his device ?
Here's the thread I have been coaching him at. Any opinions ?

Thank you.
As long as he knows what he's doing and has a unlock bootloader he should be fine

He did get the whole root thing figured out, and his phone does have SuperSU installed, he then installed TWRP Recovery through Odin, and is running the latest Modem COI5.
He downloaded a T-Mobile ROM, and Arty97 Kernel, flashed the ROM + Kernel, and he said been stuck on the boot screen for 25 minutes, and can't get back into Recovery.
Suggestions ?
Actually never mind after reading that whole thread I would reccomend download the stock rom and then flashing it . This happened to me when I flashed the wrong framework for my device. It got stuck on the same screen . I flashed in with my stock rom and it went back to normal and I didn't lose anything.
Tyler made this comment, can't seem to even power off the phone.
amn, you really are trying to help. That's awesome. Sadly however, the thing won't turn off no matter how long I hold the power button.
I saw one thread on reddit that suggested downloading a stock ROM and flashing through Odin. But, I can't find a stock ROM and I don't think you can flash ROMs through Odin.
He did manage to get this after trying to power down./
[/QUOTE]
Now what he asked ?
Tell him to put it into download mode then flash his stock rom . I Googled it and found it super easily and even found instructions
This is Tyler, the guy Zorachus has tried so hard t help. I've been googling for stoc ROMs but haven't found any to download. Can I flash a ROM through Odin?
I'm iPhone jailbreaker guy, so all this Android stuff is new t me.
I want to post the link I found but I can't because this site has a 10 post rule to post links and I haven't done 10 posts and don't worry this is my first Android phone . I've been jailbreaking since 4.1.2 so the switch was weird for me too haha but yes you can flash flash a rom through Odin
Here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/56127/N920TUVU2COI5_N920TTMB2COI5_TMB/
Make sure it is the correct model and follow the instructions.
Don't worry, you should be fine.
If he got stuck again, hold down volume up and down and power at the same time and it reboots

I had this same issue, I found out that TWRP did not actually flash the rom so the phone sat on the boot logo with no OS to load, then read up on arter97's kernel and he recommends switching to PhilZ touch recovery instead of TWRP. He provides a download to this recovery on his thread I do believe. Luckily I had downloaded the recovery and simply flashed it via TWRP (Hint: while I was stuck on the boot up logo, the only thing that worked for me is holding Vol-, home and power, then as soon as the screen goes dark, switch from holding Vol- and hold Vol+ instead, wait a bit and recovery should boot).
Once I got Philz touch installed, I rebooted the recovery and voila, no more TWRP. I simply flashed the ROM through it and rebooted again, back in business.
So to conclude, I get the feeling you're experiencing the same problem, where you went wrong is using TWRP with the arter97 kernel.
EDIT: You're in luck! Go here: http://arter97.com/browse/exynos7420/kernel/5.0/n920tw8/
Grab the tar.md5 file and flash with Odin with the phone in download mode, then reboot to new recovery and flash your rom again

Hey thanks!!!! You saved my a$$ I have been dealing with this for 6+ hours now & couldn't get past the boot logo & your suggestion worked! I <3 you! Lol
Thank **** I found your post mate, I was stuck in a never ending boot loop with no way to get into recovery either.
The trick about holding down Vol-, home and power, and then switching to vol+ at blackscreen but keeping the others down, that thing worked and I was able to make it into my recovery!
Sadly however I made the most foolish mistake of all in my hurry and went for a factory reset.
On top of that I don't think that Titanium Backup was set to auto sync on my new phone so I might possibly have lost everything I have. Let's find out.

stuck in loop, possibly a different kind of loop

I was trying to fix my girlfriends nexus 5 that was doing the restart loop after an update. Everything seemed to go fine. Unlocked the bootloader, etc. Flashed the newest rom (6.0.1 (MMB29S) ce1d670f61061c3902f3997510ea55d7 6bfcdfa4f4840898e5d76fa044f5e6a0f71343bf) and then something obviously went wrong (not quite sure, dont think i touched anything) and it's now stuck in a different kind of loop that only loops while it's plugged in. Ive uploaded a video to youtube, but since im a new user i cant actually link it properly yet. Hopefully this wont annoy any mods, I promise it's not spam. youtube . be / yNSoiTPnGZw
Is there any way to get it to stay on for more than a couple seconds to retry the flashing?
Any help is appreciated.

First i followed the guide here on xda to unlock the bootloader(guide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905), installed twrp, which went fine. Then i realized that i couldnt (or didnt realize how to via command line) to copy the stock rom and install it via twrp, so then i followed this guide here on xda (tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701) with the factory img (6.01 hammerhead), got to this point in the guide: ★After everything finished, select "Recovery" using the volume buttons. then it stalled out, turned off and now just cycles on and offf through the google logo with the lock picture or if i hold down the volume button it will go into the bootloader briefly then restart, rinse repeat.

Have u tried messing with the power button, there are a lot of issues on the nexus 5 with the power button causing loops, simply from getting stuck, try playing with the power button a little and see of that helps, it might just need to be replaced

in the end fastboot, since i coulndt see how i could copy the img over to install via twrp
im pretty sure the button is fine, since it was cycling from the ota update install, then was working fine unlocking the bootloader, but after the flash, it crapped the bed.
Different problem
I had a problem where the google logo keeps on booting up with a slight vibration. This started to happen when my was dropped.I initially thought that was a software issue and thought of installing new ROM's but eventually my device was not detected :crying:
So i took it to repair shop near my house and they said it would cost 2500
I did some google research and found the reason was due to the power button being stucked during the fall.I got that repaired and my device is good to go

ok, took it into a shop, got the power button fixed. It must have been on the way out because literally one minute it worked and the second it didnt. now i think ive got it narrowed down. it's saying it's unable to mount /persist. ive tried the various fixes:
e2fsck/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist
and
make_ext4fs/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist
but all i get is a not found error. not sure what to do from here on.
success!! i ended up stumbling on a bit how to restore the persist partition i didnt try. got a custom rom installs and everything works. thanks to everyone who tried to help!!
stuck in bootloop while flashing cataclysm rom
i tried to flash cataclysm rom in my n5..i unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery using TWRP and flash cataclysm rom following the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...s-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905...after that it was stuck in bootloop...i tried to open recovery but it wont open anymore it will only go back to loop....how can open the recovery? is it safe to flash CWM recovery?..tnx in advance..
When it was stuck in the loop, I had to hold vol up and down with the power button (wait a few secs until it was completely off) then reboot holding down + power till it opened the bootloader. if that doesnt work, try reflashing the bootloader via fastboot. I only found out i couldnt mount the persist partition by looking at the terminal window in twrp after trying to install a rom which kept it in the boot loop. I then used the cmd: make_ext4fs /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist to rebuild it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8013 : teamwin recovery not opening

I'm trying to load TWRP or any custom recovery on my above mentioned tablet but i'm just not able to load it. nor even boots normally. Only ODIN mode.
when i try recovery boot, a screen saying 'TEAMWIN' will appear shortly but soon closes and 'Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1' bootscreen comes up. I can only access ODIN(Download) mode and even tried to flash different custom recovery files and it says Passed but still again getting the same TeamWin screen loading in recovery mode and crashes in the middle and then bootloop happens.

I was having issues at first.
Maybe give this a try and see if it works for you.
I had to install CWM via odin, and wait a good while for the "pass."
Then I had to make sure not to let it reboot on its own.
I powered off manually, and then booted into recovery like this:
1. Volume down and power on at the same time.
2. Immediate release power when you see anything pop up, but continue holding volume down.
3. Release vol down when you see the teamwin logo.
That got me passed the part where it would automatically bypass TWRP.
I then used the toolbox to do the rest including the "fix."
I had to manually boot into TWRP at first, even with the toolbox, but that was the issue I had, and how I got around it.
Philz Recovery works.

I'm having the EXACT same issue as OP... All of a sudden I got bootloop when starting the tablet normally, going to recovery only shows TeamWin logo briefly and tablet reboots, and download mode works (Odin detects the tablet) but it always says "DOWNLOADING... Do not turn off target.".
Already tried installing stock rom, Philz recovery, CWM Recovery, EFS Repair... Nothing worked.

If the TWRP screen is still there after you've flashed for example the stock ROM, than it's clear that your eMMC is locked.
In this case it need's to get replaced, I'm doing this weekly, so this problem is to solve.

Can't boot past Google logo white screen after flash-all.bat full restore

Hi all, been running a fairly stable non-Verizon (but on Verizon network) Pixel for several years now. Yesterday when using Google Maps my phone's screen blacked out and it immediately put itself into a boot loop. My bootloader is unlocked so it starts with the warning screen then the white background Google logo screen, then after ~25 seconds the screen blacks out again and it repeats.
I can hold down the power button to force the power off faster so I don't think it's a stuck power button. I have updated my SDK/platform-tools and have a fresh August factory image downloaded and re-downloaded, and all the images extracted to the correct folder and the flash-all.bat factory reset seems to run normally in cmd and on the phone (reboots happen at regular times, etc.) but as soon as it gets to the white background Google screen, cut to black after ~25secs.
I cannot reliably boot into twrp-3.2.3-1-sailfish.img, but it does work sometimes. ADB sideloading any ZIP does not seem to work (freezes TWRP and back into boot cycle). I can sometimes boot into stock recovery and have tried "Wipe data/factory reset" which appears to complete successfully but still does not get me past the white screen logo.
Anything else I can try? Does it seem broken to anyone else? I use custom roms, recently been on Bootleggers with no complaints, but I don't think it's related to that. Something seems irreparably corrupted or something, it was so weird that it just did it to itself mid-navigation and there's nothing I can do to restore it to any state--I even tried flashing last month's factory image, tried changing active slots, anything I could think of. Thanks for your time!

I had this once. This worked for me; clean adb flash latest factory image and nothing else, let it boot to bootlogo, use button combo to get in stock recovery, in there wipe cache/ dalvik cache and reboot. Leave it alone for a few minutes.
Hope this will help, good luck.
Cheers

Hey, thanks for your time. By adb flash you mean the regular flash-all.bat or using fastboot flash commands to flash the imgs manually, right? Or is there some difference between fastboot and adb flashes? Then, my stock recovery does not have a wipe cache / dalvik option, only a wipe data / factory reset option. Is this hiding somewhere? Should I try that in TWRP instead of stock if I can get booted to an img of that? And then you're saying after the fastboot image install, immediately boot into recovery before letting it boot at all?

Hi,
Sorry had to be more clear; yes, flash with the flash all.bat.
After the flash it will reboot, let it boot to google logo and try to get in stock recovery.
In stock recovery, if there is no clear cache/dalvik then yes, do wipe data/factory reset.
After the wipe let it boot for a while.
Don't flash anything else then the factory image until it booted up correctly and you set it up.
Good luck. If anything, just ask.
Cheers

Appreciate it. Here's the order of operations:
- flash-all.bat
- After final reboot of flash-all.bat, hold volume down to get into bootloader immediately, then to recovery from there (no other way to boot into recovery mode faster AFAIK)
Unfortunately this is as far as I get. Choosing recovery after going to bootloader right after flash only takes me to the white screen for 25 seconds, then loop. At this point I can't get into recovery at all from bootloader, though it's been sometimes possible in the past. I think it's died, I've actually already ordered a new phone but will keep trying things with this one till that one arrives. I'll update if I'm able to get to recovery anymore, but like I noted in my OP I have tried the recovery factory reset already to no avail. It's too bad that I can't get it to work reliably enough to try your exact order of steps, but probably just a sign of larger problems.
Edit: Finally got to recovery and did the wipe again, and then it started booting to ONLY recovery after that! So the bootloop kinda changed but not so much for the better.

That's a real bummer m8!. Starting to think there's a hardware problem of some kind.
Wish I could help you out a little more, but I can't from a distance.
Hope you're new phone does you well. What did you order? Another Pixel?
Cheers

Thanks again for the attempts to help, I got a couple tips from posting on reddit too that didn't get me anywhere either--I've all but called it on the Pixel! But appreciate your time.
I went with the OnePlus 7 Pro and am looking forward to it. I'm disappointed the Pixel didn't make it to a full 3 years of use for me, hoping I can get more out of the next one! Cheers
