ads blocker - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Is there any way to block ads on youtube and chorme without root?!

So far, no adblocker app works without root.
The only browser that has adblocker is opera mini, try it.

You can block ads without root using Blokada (vpn based ad blocker) https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-blokada-fire-forget-root-ad-blocker-t3503374 . It doesn't block ads within youtube but you can find modified youtube app version in the apps&games section here on xda. Here https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-iytbp-injected-youtube-background-t3560900 Look at the third post for non root version

Giving the fact it is VPN based, I won't use it due to some laws in my country.

As far as i know, it's a local vpn only running on your smartphone ( not through internet). Maybe it's compliant with the law of your country.

There's also dns66 which does not need root.
It's available in fdroid
That's why honor 8 is the first phone I didn't root

Block all ads without root

If you want to block all ads without root use Adguard it blocks all browser ads for free. But for £6.95 you get 1 years licence which will block app ads. It's working perfectly for me I have not seen one ad and you don't need to be rooted

Can anyone confirm please?

Does Adfree block app ads if it does I might try it . I only used to root to block ads
Don't worry Adfree needs root Adguard doesn't
Adfree needs Root but it also blocks most ads in apps and Adguard is about just as god.
I've been using it for a while, it's quite good. But obviously everything adds up and it has an impact on battery life.
Working great for me. Some pages seem to load a bit slower, other faster. Premium does work on blocking app ads (tested in SpeedTest app).

Adguard is a massive battery hog from what I can recall from my previous experience with it

Adguard can block ads from apps?
Confused!
How can two apps do same thing and one requires root [which is prohibited by OEMs] while other does not require root. And how can both be same in quality. Can someone explain.
Links to paid apps are not permitted on XDA without a free version available to members as well.
I'll leave the thread open to discuss, but please... No links here.

Ad blocking

Is there any good ad blocking software that runs at a browser level? I've used adblock but it runs as a proxy and can stop some apps from accessing the internet.
Sent from my SM-T705 using Tapatalk
try AdAway, it's block ad in every app.
or use ublock in firefox, to block only for the browser.
and Ghostery too, works well . Also try bluehell firewall addon <- Both firefox Andriod.
Thanks guys I'll give these suggestions a try

Another AdAway fan...
Maybe Adblock Browser? https://adblockbrowser.org/
but I still love Chrome though
AdAway uses hosts file, so it's still a system level software

Managing our own hosts file is the best solution IMO. You have no control over a proxy. #TrustOrPray
AdAway FTW!!!

AdAway is ONLY a user interface to manager your hosts file. This app doesn't block anything.
Check the XDA thread or Github to learn how to use it.
I use Adfree.
It blocks ads by adding the hosts to the local hosts file.
This method blocks the advertisements in all apps + browser
Sounds interesting. What host files do you need to implement to get add-free apps with adaway?

You only need Adaway: it is an interface, which unlike the other apps, does not waste your battery. It gets host sources from 4 respectable internet sites that get updated regularly. It also lets you add your own sites. It is so effective that Google has expelled it from its app store. And it is open source: you don't want to give root access to a closed source app...
are there Apps to block just ads on selected sites? Because I don't want to block all ads from all sites. I just want to block these sites, wich opens 20x Tabs by one click.

Google Play removed all ad-blocking apps. You can search here at xda-developers for AdAway and AdFree.

A hosts file blocks domains so the ad/domain/IP "X" will be blocked on any website.

Adguard works wonders. I can't post a link because I don't have enough posts. But it's just adguard dot com.
I read about block-this but I don't understand how it works or if it secure. Has anyone done a deep dive into this app? I'm very concerned with security and data leakage.
Is Adguard the next best alternative?
blockthis works fine with unrooted MM, better then adguard, no probs in security
Any non-root adblocker uses a VPN to re-route traffic through via a custom hosts file that filters out the ads, Adguard uses a local VPN for http traffic, but for https I think they use a remote server (https blocking is disabled by default)

Thank you both for the suggestions! blocking within apps would be great too! I was just worried about data leakage to third party servers etc... I don't quite understand how everything works in detail but the developer of Block-This has a thread going on XDA (https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/themes/block-ad-blocker-root-t3338098) and seems like a honest dev, but you can't be sure unless you understand how the system works. I'll try to get Steve Gibson from Security Now Podcast to get into it in detail, he understands it down to the base and explains it well for the slow among us such as I.
What about dns66

That's true. But obviously one can leave the https filtering option disabled if concerned about proxying through the remote server. And I would think that opting to use it should be relatively safe considering that all https traffic is encrypted. The destination site is the only party who should be able to decrypt it.

S7E - possible to remove you tube ads?

Hey guys,
eeks - accidentally posted this before typing (hit enter by accident just before I was about to search). BlarrGh! !!
anyways, wondering if it's possible to remove youtube ads without rooting the s7e. Always rooted my other phones to remove loud volume warning, and youtube ads. I don't believe its possible to remove volume warning without rooting, but what about ads
Nope not possible. You need rood, Xposed framework and youtube adaway.
But it works like a charm

Got mine yesterday. After 30 minutes it was rooted, after a hour it was flashed with a custom rom & kernel. Couldn't stand the bloatware and really needed adaway :silly:
I was an AOSP guy until tw on the s6. Running ports on my note 3. I flashed every device i ever had except my Nvidia Shield TV. That's gonna stay stock

Use this YouTube by arter97 if you don't want to install xposed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-patched-ad-free-youtube-apks-t3449312
Otherwise you need to install Xposed and use YouTube AdAway module.
Both needs roots.

Or... you could just watch the ads seeing this it how the content creators get paid. Blocking ads means YouTubers don't get paid which means no more content will be created by them.

Dumbest thing I've read in a very long time. For a large proportion of YouTubers it is their job. That's like pirating an album then telling the artist to go work in a shop if they want to make a living. Mong.

I refuse to watch ads. However I understand the dilemma of blocking them. If YouTube Red was available in my country, I'd stop using adblockers completely. I hate the concept of advertisement in its current form. If I want something I'm gonna decide to buy it myself. If I need info, I'm gonna use Google to get it. Showing me intrusive ads only makes me hate you and your products altogether.

ad blocking options on Nougat?

Hi
I'm in the midst of rooting etc and am likely to stick with Nougat rather then MM.
Obviously MM has benefits of Xposed - with its various ad blocking modules as well as YouTube ad blocking.
However for those rooted and on Nougat:
1) could you provide your experience with what adblocker is working well for you?
2) is there any way of blocking YouTube ads with Nougat (given we cannot apply the legendary YouTube ad blocker module/Xposed)?
3) unrelated to add blocking. But which root method is preferable or does it really not matter... SuperSU or Magisk?
I can provide some feedback on 3)
No difference in functionality, but if you need to pass safety net - Magisk Root with Magisk Hide is the only way to go

1)
I use Adaway installed via F-Droid. Works for years on several Android devices here. Very few ads get through. Saves a lot of bandwidth.
It rewrites your hosts-file and because of that needs root-rights.
I use this hosts-file on my other computers.
2) I nearly never use YouTube but do not feel bothered. But I do not know if this is due to a hosts-file or my choice of videos.

Well, it's based on Wanam's xposed module. Just be careful not to let Google play update the app!
