Need to remove unknown MDM agent from LG Aristo Tmobile Version bug report included - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I have an issue with my personal phone, the Tmobile LG Aristo, being enrolled and supervised by an unknown MDM management agent (I don't know which one or who put it there). I will post the instances in the bugreport that show up when I search for "MDM" below and please let me know if there's more information I can provide. Here are some questions and observations:
Wiping the phone doesn't fix the problem and there's nothing stated anywhere that the phone is being managed so no obvious certificate to delete nor an app.
Also, do the trust certificates have anything to do with this and if I disabled the correct one(s) it would then remove the software?
I know Apple has Apple Configurator to do enroll/unenroll management software from iOS devices. Does Android have a tool like Apple Configurator that I need to use?

[Q] Problem after flashing 5.1.1, downgrading to 5.1.0 still don't work (rmt_storage)

Hi,
I've flashed 5.1.1 image over my N5 using google factory images and flash-all.sh script (removed -w) option. After flash the phone rebooted correctly, but it just hangs on the 4 spinning dots. I've wait over 20 minutes but still no change. I've connected the phone again run logcat and the output was I guess the same as the pasted before.
I thought I move back to 5.1.0 but after doing that I still see the spinng dots and nothing more. The current log is pasted here.
Any help, pls? I've no idea what should I do now...

Hi,
I've flashed 5.1.1 image over my N5 using google factory images and flash-all.sh script (removed -w) option. After flash the phone rebooted correctly, but it just hangs on the 4 spinning dots. I've wait over 20 minutes but still no change. I've connected the phone again run logcat and the output was I guess the same as the pasted before.
I thought I move back to 5.1.0 but after doing that I still see the spinng dots and nothing more. The current log is pasted here.
Any help, pls? I've no idea what should I do now...

MTCD_XRC sofia3gr 1Gb RAM 6.0.1 apps being killed?

Hi all,
I've purchased the above head unit (Will post specs below) and thought I'd give the 1Gb RAM unit a try, I've played about with android for a long time so already knew 1Gb was light, but I got it cheap (Always the problem!).
So I've got a Hizpo (I know that's a bundler) unit, so actual specs are:
Android 6.0.1
A-MEDIA AUTO (1024x600)
Baseband: SF3GR_M-26.3
Kernel: 3.14.0+ [email protected] #55
Build number: sofia3gr_car_64-userdebug
MCU: MTCD_XRC_V2.58_1
Memory: 918MB
Now this seems to be quite up to date, new Android, new MCU version and kernel. It boots pretty quickly and also apps do load quite quickly too, even google maps.
The problem I have is that apps suddenly close without warning and without error. So for example I open google maps, choose directions, and go to start navigation and suddenly it closes. No normal app has crashed message or anything like that.
So my suspicion is this is some kind of task killer running, killing apps that are trying to consume too much memory or CPU. I know the stock rom has something like this as I have a 'rocket' icon I can click and it shows how much ram it has managed to free up. I'm suspecting there is a background service doing this periodically and killing things, but being a bit over-ambitious! So far I'm not consuming anywhere near the full RAM, whenever I've checked I've had around 600MB free at any one time and the unit isn't going really laggy or anything I'd expect, so I think it's just the task killer getting in the way.
Does anyone have anything similar, or have found what is killing tasks off like this?
I'm trying to get adb over wireless working, initially this hasn't worked but I've got another couple of ways to try first to get adb debugging.
Any suggestions please?
(And yes I know, moving to a 2Gb board would be simplest option, but cost is an issue!)

I recently bought exactly the same unit off an eBay seller 'stereo_eu'.
My unit behaves exactly the same a yours - BADLY!
First problem occured when the apparent UK stock unit took 3 weeks to arrive from China, and eBay removed the sellers items for an unspecified infringement.
After fitting, it does exactly as you described, and other nonsense.
I found a MCU version V2.60 which installed correctly but made no difference.
I then contacted the seller who sent me a link to an update.zip package, which turned out to be a
corrupt .zip file, (new4_sofia_6.0_wifi(20170915).zip) and put my unit into a V6.1.2 recovery mode loop.
I managed to recover it with a V5.1.1 Lolipop version found on here, and it's better than the stock 6.0.1
software, but still has it's problems.
They seem totally unwilling to link to a 'non corrupt' update file, and have asked me to send the unit back (to China) for replacement, which I have declined, and requested a return to their UK address, and a refund.
Not impressed at all so far . . . . . . . .
Well, I'm not saying the units are junk, I'm relatively happy as I can still use my phone for navigation, so not a total loss, but I like tinkering with android (I'm a former android dev) so figuring out what's going on is what I'm aiming to do.
I've now installed root (SuperSu) and doing adb shell I can gain root and get through the filesystem to see what's going on. adb logcat didn't show anything interesting as I thought it might, I've also confirmed that "Sofia-1-C9-Server-V1.0.apk" does not exist on this head unit, however when you turn the ignition off it shows "Shutting Down" and goes into a sleep mode which does a similar thing and kills all background services, etc which again don't get restarted after powering back on.
I've got a bit of logcat output when I launched maps, and in the process of launching maps the music playing in the background stopped, but noting in the log seems to indicate why:

That's way over my head!
V5.11 is much better, but it wont play music, or nav sounds randomly, but the radio sounds always work?
I've put it back on V6.0.1 to get the music back, but nav randomly shuts down again.
I'm back to square one.
The seller has agreed to shipping back to Germany for full refund though.
It might be a good option!
OK, next steps now I've not identified a specific task killer is looking into Dalvik cache and VM settings, as perhaps these are too lean and causing the apps to run out and die like that (Still no message seeming to indicate this though).
Anyone any thoughts on tweaking these settings on a head unit? I'll grab my current values and my suggested ones for reference shortly.

Ah, Dalvik was pre-4.0 and these are 6.0 Marshmallow so do the dalvik cache tweaks still do anything or do I need to look for ART tweaks instead?
still on 5.11 here, looks like disabling 'media audio' under bluetooth settings on my phone allows the head unit to route the music player to the speakers again, not sure why it was letting the radio audio through and not the music audio?
Am trying to get the Marshmallow release working so unfortunately not wanting to revert back to 5 or earlier.
However I'm making progress on 6.x
I believe it's the lowmemorykiller/ART that's getting in the way here, perhaps being set to be too aggressive at larger memory sizes.
I've installed a minfree memory kernel lowmemorykiller (it's easier than tweaking the params from adb shell) - App is "AutoKiller Memory Optimizer". I've not used any of it's other functions as this was the main one I wanted.
So after tweaks I'm running with:

So far, running navigation (Google Maps) and then swapping back and forward to music and back, maps didn't close itself at all.
For some reason, music was stopping when switching to maps but I think that's more of an audio routing issue to look into, but so far it doesn't appear to be aggressively killing applications that have focus.

I've also discovered some additional items when debugging, relating to standby, memory and the microntek applications but I'll post to a separate thread as will try and keep this thread on-track.

FIX/SOLVED
OK, after 30 minute drive this morning, I've had no app crashes or exits at all, ran maps with navigation and had FM radio on all the way, switched between apps using hard and soft back/keys, no problems, so I'm going to call this one the fix!
So the steps:
Root it
Install "AutoKiller Memory Optimizer" by MobiWIA Kft.
In AutoKiller switch everything OFF but then use the CHANGE button on main screen, set it to MODERATE (Or experiment with different ones)
Remember that needs set after full reboot (standby is fine) unless you add it to autostart at boot.
@Qwertyco I'd go back up to 6 and try the above, might solve the issues for you!

After playing with 5.11 for a few days, it's become apparent that It has sound routing problems whenever
there's a Bluetooth connection to my phone. (Moto G5 on Android 7). The only way I can get music or nav
sound (radio is always Ok!) is to have the connection as 'Internet sharing only', no phone or contacts or A2DP.
It also needs regular rebooting to achieve this, as returning from sleep sometimes messes with the sound routing as well.
I'm going to try going back to 6.0.1, and try the new HIZPO 2017.09.15 update file first before I try your fix.

Hi, no problem same here as the car has been dead for a while here unfortunately!

But rooting is:
* Go into factory settings in Settings menu
* type adbon into the password box and click OK
Try at that point, you should be able to get adb working over wifi. If not, install a terminal app to the head unit and then type "setprop persist.adb.tcp.port 5555" and then reboot the unit. You should then be able to adb over wifi.
Then you can root it using the root procedure at https://hvdwolf.github.io/Joying-RootAssistant/rooting.html and I used the file SuperSU-Joying-Intel-v2.82SR1-patch2.zip which worked first time.
Thanks to Andy and others, I've gone back to Android 6.01 and rooted the thing, followed Andy's tips and it seems to be running fairly smoothly for the first time ever.
I've done all this with the unit on the workbench (coffee table) as it's cold outside!
I can't test the sat nav indoors, but it seems to start up and keep running now.
My mission is to get it to do everything I want it to do before it goes back in the car.
Currently struggling with getting it to auto-tether to my phone Bluetooth, and getting apps to autostart at boot.
I can't seem to find any mention of autorun in the software, and the many autorun apps I've tried don't autorun at boot!
Hey m8, glad you're getting there. It's been in my car for quite a few months now, running smoothly!
So, for the auto-tethering bluetooth I've done this:
Get BluetoothTethering.apk from 'doitright' at https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...elopment/bluetooth-settings-launcher-t3504526 (Don't get blueballs, we don't need it) and follow the instructions to install it onto our headunits (i.e. the bit in the terminal/code block where you write it to /system/priv-app/). I've followed those instructions and my phone (HTC One M8) and car bring their bluetooth up and tether perfectly each time now.
Autorun at boot/wake-up is still a little challenging, however the trick is the one that BluetoothTethering.apk uses above, installing the app into priv-app lets it keep running in the background/at wakeup so the key is there, I've just never bothered to really go further into it.
To do the low-mem-killer settings, since our units don't reboot often I just do that manually, as there isn't an rc.local or bootup script that I've located that I can chain those commands into, but then again I've not tried very hard as it's working for me now!
I use Waze, Google Maps, Music, Radio all swapping between them without crashes. Sure it's not the fastest thing in the world but it works

The two apps I want to autostart are a night screen dimmer and a speed sensitive volume controller. The priv-app location may well solve that.!

Those sound interesting apps, which ones are you using as I'm always on the lookout for decent addons!
Also just be careful having more and more apps running in the background, we've not got a huge amount of RAM/Processor to play with!

Thanks @Qwertyco I'll take a look at those two apps.
The autokiller optimizer, once it's ran once, those settings will stick until a full hard reboot/power disconnect not just standby when you turn ignition off, so chances are that's why it's kept working for you so far.
Update:
After doing all the stuff Andy sugested, it's running much better now, and rarely does anything random or unexpected anymore.
I's still anoying me in various ways though, the main thing being that everytime it starts up the music palyer plays the first track of the first album EVERYTIME! This happens to be AC/DC - Hells Bells, which is wearing a bit thin now. It rarely does an 'quick resume' and almost always takes a full boot time to start playing music.
Any Ideas out there?

Install TWRP recovery
If you come from stock ROM and have just unlocked your boot loader, this is the next thing to do. I recommend to use the TWRP recovery for the OnePlus 3/3T. The following instructions are based on TWRP.
To install TWRP, download the twrp-x.x.x-x-oneplus3.img file (Note: replace "x.x.x-x" in the following instructions with the respective values from the real file name) to your PC, connect the phone via USB to your PC, get it into 'fastboot mode' and enter the following command on your PC:

Afterwards, directly boot into 'recovery mode' (enter fastboot reboot on your PC and hold Power and vol.down) - DO NOT boot into the phone's Android system after having flashed TWRP! Once TWRP has been launched, you may decide to reboot your phone and install the ROM at any time later. But the first boot after flashing TWRP must be TWRP in recovery mode.
Advanced Wipe
ONLY perform the steps described here, if you come from Stock ROM or a different Custom ROM!
Boot into recovery mode. In TWRP, choose "Wipe", "Advanced" and spefify "Dalvik", "System", "Cache" and "Data" to be wiped. Make sure NOT to wipe "Internal memory". Swipe to confirm the deletion and get back into the main menu.
DO NOT flash Gapps!
This ROM comes with pre-installed microG. So don't attempt to flash Gapps.
Install ROM
In the TWRP main menu, choose "Install". A file manager appears to let you navigate to your internal memory (path /sdcard). Choose the .ZIP file of our ROM and swipe to flash.
If you update from a previous version of my ROM, including my LineageOS 15.1 build, you don't need to perform a wipe. If you come from a different ROM (or stock firmware), make sure that you have performed the Wipe steps above.
When finished flashing, return to the main menu, choose "Reboot" and then "System", which will cause your phone to boot into Lineage OS 16.0 - be patient, the first boot after flashing a new ROM takes quite long!
Dealing with signed builds
Please note, that this builds is signed with an own key. When you come from a different build, you cannot directly "dirty-flash" this build. You have to perform a "clean flash" (recommended), or - you do this on your own risk - you may try the below steps.
This happens at your own risk - make a backup with TWRP before!
Download and extract the file migration.sh from this archive
This file helps you to migrate from a build signed with the publicly available test keys (i.e. all builds around, which do not state that they are signed). If you come from another signed build (e.g. official LineageOS), you have to adapt the file accordingly (see below links).
boot into TWRP
push the migration.sh file to the directory /data/local on your device and mount the /system partition in TWRP (you can do so using the dedicated TWRP's menu entry)
launch the built-in terminal in TWRP, cd into /data/local, make migration.sh executable (chmod +x) and execute the command ./migration.sh official
(In case you receive an error, try sh ./migration.sh official instead)
flash the ROM .zip
wipe Cache and Dalvik/ART Cache
reboot system

Security Hardening Features - Details
1. Pre-installed microG and F-Droid

3. Restrict access to /proc/net for user apps
An adapted SELinux policy prevents user apps from accessing the /proc/net pseudo file system, which can be misused to monitor and track the phone's internet traffic. For technical backgrounds, see here. For the legitimate use case of the smart phone owner him/herself monitoring the network traffic to see, what the installed apps do, the app Privacy-Friendly Network Monitor has been bundled.
4. Enhanced Privacy Guard - Sensor permission switches
An own sensor template to control access to motion sensors ('ask' mode) and all other sensors (allowed by default, but can be restricted) has been implemented into the Privacy Guard.
5. Cloudflare (instead of Google) default DNS
Cloudflare DNS has a better privacy policy than Google Public DNS and has DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS. In the deafult DNS settings (as fallback) and network diagnostics, the Cloudflare DNS adresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 are specified as defaults (instead of Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
6. Privacy-preferred default settings
When newly installed, the below settings are defaulted, different from standard LineageOS 16.0 (all settings can be changed at any time later):
Privacy Guard is enabled on install (proposal during Setup)
Anonymous LineageOS statistics disabled (proposal during Setup)
The standard browsing app does not get the location runtime permission automatically assigned
Sensitive information is hidden on the lock screen
Camera app: Location tagging disabled by default
Further, when a lock screen protection is set (PIN, pattern, password), the Nfc, Hotspot and airplane mode tiles require authentication and cannot be set without

When activated, all outgoing connection attempts to Facebook servers will be suppressed.

When activated, the system will not ping a specific Google server any longer when establishing a WiFi connection to determine, whether a captive portal is being used.

GPS also works fine, if no SIM card is present, so there obviously is no benefit for the phone holder (different from other involved parties ) to provide this data . . .
10. Default hosts file with many blocked ad/tracking sites
The system's hosts file redirects a comprehensive list of URLs known to be adware, tracking, etc. to 127.0.0.1 (ipv4) and ::1 (ipv6)
11. Privacy-enhanced Bromite SystemWebView
Instead of the default Chromium System Webview component, the Bromite SystemWebView is used offering more privacy, more ad blocking and less Google tracking.
12. Firewall UI
Settings => Security & Location - Firewall
Lists all apps and allows to restrict Internet access per app in regards to WiFi, mobile network or VPN
This per-app feature is a standard feature in LineageOS, but the UI to show all apps is an Extra (taken from a topic in LineageOS's Gerrit - it may, or may not, become part of the official LineageOS one day)

Root
The ROM does not come with root baked in. A couple of features in this ROM even reduces the usual need for root.
Nevertheless, if you need/want to grant root permissions to some of your apps, the most popular options are:
Official LineageOS su addon (use 'addonsu-16.0-arm64-signed.zip')
Magisk (please search XDA on your own)
Note that I cannot and will not support any issues related to Magisk

After the first installation of this ROM, you need to setup microG.

Firmware
You need at least OxygenOS 9.0.x firmware, latest firmware recommended.
If you come from Oreo with 5.x firmware, got to this thread, if you come from a pie build and/pr don't mind formatting the data partition, original firmware updates (or downgrades, if needed) as flashable ZIP can be obtained e.g. here or here. Do not confuse OnePlus 3 and OnePLus 3T firmware or you will brick your device!
OTA Updates on an encrypted device
In case your device in encrypted and you have flashed apps creating "survival scripts" in /system/addon.d (e.g. Magisk), there *may* be a dependency to files in the data partition.
An OTA update until current TWRP 3.3.1 does not decrypt the data partition, as this is usually not needed - under specific circumstances however, this may lead to unwanted effects (up to a non-booting device!) during an OTA update, if such scripts aim at accessing files located in the data partition. If unsure, rather perform the update manually as dirty-flash in TWRP or - which in general is a good practice - regularly perform backups in TWRP. If you haven't flashed anything on top of my build (except for the LineageOS root addon, which is no problem), there shouldn't be any issue.
This commit in TWRP indicates, that this potential issue will be solved in future TWRP releases. With TWRP 3.4.0, you will be prompted for the decryption password also for OTA updates - if you do so, you are always on the safe side.

I don't own however an OP3 to be able to support. Isn't "cross device development" more something like treble GSI or custom kernels for device families rather than a ROM, which is very specific / suitable for two devices?

No, there are roms and kernels that are compatible with both OP3 and OP3T. Of course with the right firmware. You already linked to nvertigo67's firmware thread, so it should be clear that you install the appropriate firmware for the device. In the "cross device development" are much more people and users. I would ask a mod to move this thread, maybe a user with the OP3 can test the rom before. I have a OP3T

I have a strange but reproducible issue here. Whenever I place or receive a SIP call, my device hard freezes. The UI stops responding for about 5 seconds before going black, and the phone stays in this state until it is hard reset. I have gotten this crash on both the native Android SIP client in the Dialer and also with Linphone. I am running microG and Magisk. I had this exact same setup before on NLOS without issues.

I have a strange but reproducible issue here. Whenever I place or receive a SIP call, my device hard freezes. The UI stops responding for about 5 seconds before going black, and the phone stays in this state until it is hard reset. I have gotten this crash on both the native Android SIP client in the Dialer and also with Linphone. I am running microG and Magisk. I had this exact same setup before on NLOS without issues.

Just one thing, which I have immediately spotted: The linphone app (which you used to create the logcat) did not have the RECORD_AUDIO permission - could you pls. have a closer look on that aspect?

That's odd. The app's permissions in Settings shows it has permission, but for good measure I went ahead and used the shell to grant the permission manually with

Hi all,
I can confirm the same VoIP calling issues stated by @0xC0ncord. In my case I have reproduced the rebooting error on Whatsapp, Riot and NextCloud-Talk, which is always triggered right after a call is established between the peers. After some digging I found out there seems to be a missing check in the kernel's code (you can look it up on Gitlab > LineageOS > Issue 1558):
- if (runtime->dma_area)
+ if (runtime->dma_area && !substream->ops->copy)
So maybe patching this check on sound/core/pcm_native.c could be the solution in this case too, not really sure. I'm not too experienced with kernel building, but if I get the opportunity to try and do it myself I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the info - I was able to reproduce the crash by attempting a Telegram call.
Have applied the patch and now building... If the patch fixes the issue, I will upload a new build.
Anyway, will keep you posted.

Unexpected shutdown/restart

Hi,
I have again some ugly issues: from time to time, randomly, my HTC U12+ with latest software version shuts down, or reboots, or something.
For example, it works fine, I put it on the table and after some time, when I want to check it... Black screen. Not working.
Most of the time I struggle a lot to "open it". I keep pressing the power button, press it multiple times, press volume buttons... It looks like something happened and it does not work anymore.
The only "symptom" I found was that the Internet connection does not work anymore before losing the device.
Oh, I also booted in SAFE MODE, and it still happened!!!
I tried:
- Clear caches, both from Boost+, Settings and CCleaner
- Clear cache partition from recovery mode
- Shaking it and force it a bit thinking about a hardware connection
- I also, of course, used it without the case and it still happened
Nothing seems to work.
I took a bug report but I am not sure where to look at. I also connected using ADB and keeping it running with "logcat" hoping it will crash and I can find the bug in the logs...
Meanwhile, did this happen to any of you? Do you have any idea why this can happen?

Does anyone have any idea why this happens?
Could it be a hardware issue?
I do not want to lose all the data on the phone (I know, backup helps but not fully: 2 factor authentication apps, etc.)
OK, problem soved: I destroyed the phone (getting a small hand cut as well).
Reset to factory > Same thing
Recovery mode > Wipe > Same thing
It was probably a hardware issue. I saved my data (what I could) and throw it at the garbage.
So from now on, never HTC (if they ever come with a new phone). System UI restarting, no updates, this errors, dumb buttons (never fully worked, of course, and almost 2 years were not enough to get used to them).
