Hello all. My wife picked this up for me on black friday. Being that it was a surprise, I didn't do any research on it. Some searches have turned up misleading information on the phone. Mostly in terms of the model number vs. designation (Galaxy J7 Sky,J7 Perk, J7 Pop, etc), and what can be done with the phone in terms of rooting and such. Not much info available on the boards here, just a couple of un-answered posts. If someone who know might be able to point me in the right direction here, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
I should add that I've never worked with a phone that had this many variations, so I'm faced with a bit of a learning curve. My apologies in advance.

I am in the process of buying an Android phone. Samsung Captivate or HTC Desire Z. Any suggestions? I am new to Android and I am new xda.
I feel like I'm trapped in a time warp here that I just can't escape.
First, welcome to XDA.
Second, you obviously have access to the internet or you wouldn't be on here.
With that said, GOOGLE and YOUTUBE could provide you with more information that you can handle on these two phones. Google can give you specs, reviews, pictures and other things like prices and best places to buy. Youtube can provide you all of that same information is some cases along with a video review and actually being able to see the phones in action. Of course you can then compare the two phones based on the videos, specs and reviews and make a pretty good decision on which one is right for YOU.
I'm not really sure what else to say here dude. I mean, I could give you my opinion but at the end of the day what I have to say about the phones doesn't matter. YOU are going to be using the phone, not me. You know what you will use it for, where you will use it and what you want on it. Just research both phones (I dont mean ask people questions about it, get FACTS about the phones), opinions do not really matter most of the time when it comes to a PERSONAL device.
Or you can do like 80% of the people do these days and buy something just because "everyone else is doing it".
I'm a newbie here and not exactly sure where I should post this so if it needs to be moved/deleted/whatever then so be it lol.
I've read many many many threads and web articles about this topic but I can't seem to find one that is really close to today's date (September 3, 2011) I'm sure everyone has had enough of these threads already but I really could use the advice and help but I don't have any friends with the knowledge to call on.
Here is my problem... I bought a Nook Color about a week ago without doing nearly as much research as I should have (and normally do). I haven't rooted it yet but I'm still happy with my NC, which I've just been using to read and browse the web now and then. Today as I was looking at best buy's website and I came across the Samsung Galaxy Tab for only $30 more than what I paid for the NC... so that leaves me with the options of keeping my NC and rooting it or returning it and getting the Galaxy Tab.
I've never had a tablet before and this is the first real spend on myself in a really long time, so I want to make sure I make the right decision and don't regret it once it's too late. I'm looking for like an all around good e-reader/tablet but not looking to spend a whole lot of money on it, and at the time the NC looked like I wouldn't even have a doubt in my mind, until today. The cameras and gps and other random things the Galaxy Tab can do aren't really my main concerns but it sure factors into the whole picture. I'm thinking I'm ready to take that step into either starting the rooting today or getting the tab and just start playing around with it. And I guess another of my concerns and reasons for making this new thread was to maybe get insight about this topic in the "now" with the recent release of the 1.3 update and next nook color coming out "soon."
I guess what I'm looking for in an answer would be should I keep my NC and start going about the rooting process or should I just return it and get the tab and basically be good to go right out of the box?
That being said, I also saw that the next NC could be coming out really soon. But that doesn't really matter too much to me as I'm looking for of a more "right now" than a "near future" haha.
Any help/opinions/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!
IMO, being a tablet defeats the purpose of being an E-Reader. If you want a tablet, get the Galaxy Tab. If you want an E-Reader, get the touchscreen Nook.
So I have a LG-AS680/LG-Optimums 2
Specs are as follows
Andriod: Gingerbread 2.3.4
Baseband:6170
Company: ACS
SuperOneClick does not root my device
I need help, I haven't been able to root my device in form or fashion. There is little to no help on this phone. I have looked all around for rooting this phone. I have attached my Screen shot of the S.O.C and I am tried not finding nothing. Unlike most areas of the United States Alaska sells this phone as a service phone although I bought this phone at full retail value.
I have watched the video in the beginning and searched to find nothing on this site.

Hello
So I am going to say this and be very blunt as possible. Out of the entire programmer’s in the world no one has any program that suites this phone model. This site and many other vouch that they are the best and have everything you need while no one has any idea to help and literally stubs there nose up and avoids the question clearly. Not one of you can take time out of your day to even give any help will you? This site’s advertises how it is so great yet clearly has nothing to offer here. This is to the people out there as well who think less of the phone because it is a “pre-paid” when some service’s like mines sell it as a phone for service.
This makes the community look like a load of yuppies. Only helping those who have the phones like them and disregarding those who have to make due with certain phones. Genius!

Well hello? I need help with this
Bumping for the phone that causes hackers to choke
SO I am going to try to see if this "software" called "King Root" will work. Still looking for any help for anyone that could help me root this damn phone. I will not root any lf my other phones (S3, Tab 2, Tab A, or S5 active) until I get this one phone that has crippled a community to root
Hello! First off, thanks for having an awesome website like this, and forums full of help!
So as the thread title states, I'm looking for someone to video chat with so I can ask a bunch of questions. I am a slow reader, and have some eye strain issues, so I tend to avoid reading like the plague; so looking through lots of forum threads for each piece of information isn't a great option for me. The other reason why a vid-Q&A session would help me is because I really am pretty ignorant on most of this fancy cell-phone type of stuff, and may have a huge range of questions, from basic definitions, to device-specific possibilities, to program choices, etc. I don't do well learning stuff from reading, and am much more of a discussion-learner. Also, typing back-and-forth is also very time consuming, so I'm not huge on that sort q&a either (though obviously, if someone's willing to spend time helping me out, I'm appreciative of whatever way they help). Finally, the big crunch factor is time. I have 6 days to return this device, and I think I'll need more time than that (due to my schedule) to figure everything out on my own forum-searching. So I'm humbly asking if someone is available and willing to spend their time to make my work easier. I'd be greatly appreciative!
I need someone who speaks English. I'm in the Eastern time zone (US East coast). Please PM me if you're able to help!
Some of my question topics:
I bought a 'new' T-Mobile Galaxy S3 T999. But I'm seeing indications that the device is rooted or something. True?
Is my device disabled from downloading any updates, or just an issue with Samsung holding the current update?
The Root Explorer app shows all options in some oriental language. Is there a way to change that?
***When dialing to make a call, my older phone would allow me to search by name (so I'd hit 5646 and anyone named John, and other possible names would show up as options). My new phone doesn't do this, and I don't see an option anywhere for it. Is there a simple way to change this? (This is the question which started my search in the first place, bringing me here).
All Galaxy S3s are basically the same hardware? The only difference really in how things play out is the programming/OS?
My device has 4.1.2 T999UVDMD5. I read (here: ___support.t-mobile___.com/thread/44716___) that this OS is pretty crappy, and he's happy with the one he replaced it with. I need help figuring out whether switching up my OS is right for me, or no. I do see some lag in performance, and a bit of quick battery eating. Also not so happy with minor changes to the keyboard.
Where can I find layman's definitions of terms that people are throwing around? Like ROM, Firmware, Flashing, Odin, Kernel, etc. I assume that if I'm going to mess with my phone, I should know these things.
If all phones are created equal, and can be stripped down and dressed back up to function as desired, would it make more sense to return my $350 new S3 (non-contract), and buy a used one in good condition from Swappa for $200-300, and rework it?
Is buying from swappa safe? Seems kinda sketchy to me, in terms of reliability for returning a product if needed.
Like I said, lots of questions all over the place. Thanks in advance for reading and any help you can give! (especially to any tech guru's who aren't camera shy.
hi. am new to both xda & cellphones. have had a casual interest since 1st one i bought a few yrs ago but have never really dug deep. recently, as a means to supplement my income i started buying & selling some phones. thot i knew a little about them! lol well, because i don't like getting ripped off & would never want that to happen to someone else that buys one of my phones, i quickly learned theres a WHOLE lot more to know than i ever imagined! so i started reading everything i could find online to help me. thats why im here. recently purchased cdma ws to be able to unlock & flash phones as an additional service & as another way to supplement my income & my goal is to eventually have my own store that does it all, from providing carrier service to repairs & everything in between. the problem is i dont have much of a computer or technical background & am virtually clueless when opening up cdma ws. i have looked at several youtube videos on the topic but that takes a huge amount of time weeding out the bad ones. also, i have a couple different phones that i've played around with on the software(cdma ws) in an attempt to figure it out with mixed results. two phones in particular im working with are a samsung galaxy s4 us cellular & an htc droid dna verizon. the s4 i purchased off swappa's boneyard advertised as a bad esn. did so with the intention to sell as is and while waiting i figured i'd try to repair esn. come to find out after having run esn on swappa(comes back whitelisted), ting(says only "can't be activated on their network), and checkesnfree website where also comes back whitelisted. have called u.s. cellular and i somewhat remember them saying that previous acct holder owed balance. they had to dig for that info. been a couple wks since conversation. the htc is clean, never activated, never used. would like to flash both phones. the s4 to boost & the htc to pageplus but not definite on either. any and all help would be greatly appreciated. dont mind just getting "clues" or hints as i really enjoy trying to figure it out on my own. thanks in advance!
